I used to work here with the late Chef Eng Su, founder of The Coconut Club. The amount of R&D, effort, and thought that he put into this dish cannot be put into words. I'm glad that the recipe is in safe hands and its flavour is still upheld by the new restaurant group that bought over.
Maybe I got an off plate but when I went a month ago it tasted so bad. The chicken was super oily and salty, marination was kind of mediocre, rice wasn’t very lemak, ikan bills wasn’t freshly cooked. Beef rendang was SOOOOOTOUGH.
took the words out of my mouth! after learning abt the amount of study and work behind the dish and more importantly how it feels in the mouth, its reasonable enough to recommend to fans of nasi lemak despite the price it asks for. will return once in a while for a treat. gotta get their sambal platter too!
iirc, Coconut club uses GG French Poulet which is aka Anxin Chicken from Toh Thye San farm. The chickens are fed with corn diet, which by itself already have a slight yellow on the bone even without any seasoning or marination done on it.
My Coconut Club experience is similar to Alderic's. I like it but I wont go back because of the price. Worth a try but difficult to justify a return trip.
I just had lunch there going off the high praise from this vid, and boy did they not disappoint. The Nasi lemak is fantastic, but the kueh and beef rendang were what stood out to me the most.
So expensive yet you have to share the table with someone and have bicycles and e-bikes cycle across you. The only time I saw diners eating at the outside tables under the scorching sun are ang mohs preferring "alfresco dining".
Traditionally the top 2 legends for Nasi Lemaks in Singapore is the one at Adam Road and one at Changi where legend has it that the Sultan of where & where must stop by at each trip to SG. Surprised that both are not on Your radar. Or is that these 2 legends have long been ousted? 😬
I tried adding coconutty flavour components to my rice, but I'm not sure I'm a fan of that. I do like coconut flavour, but perhaps not so much in my rice.
I remember the sambal used to be better. My most recent visit some months ago didn’t give me that same feeling when I had it years back. Used to be my favourite Nasi Lemak spot, but at $21 now, it’s difficult to recommend.
Alderic: "Need to survive this month" Also Alderic: Lets eat at the most expensive Nasi Lemak place. On another note, what if Coconut club uses kampong chicken?
@@PaulaBean Its a breed of chicken. They grow more slowly, and usually reared cage free. They taste way better than normal chicken and actually taste fragrant.
Great review! Very in line with my own views about Coconut Club. Great basic nasi lemak set. Rice is solid with great sambal. I actually think buying any of their side dishes spoils the experience for me. Not that the sides are terrible or what. But the sides are for the bringing-your-european-client-out-for-posh-local-food occasions. If ure just there alone or on a date. I feel its perfect just to have the basic set. Extra rice if u need to top up. And the kuehs. (Cakes there always look awesome too).
yay get to be the first! do i win a plate of nasi lemak =DDD btw recovering from surgery, so unable to eat now, been just watching all your videos and it just hit the spot seeing u enjoy all that good food. loved the CKT series!
looks worth a try but price point seems very steep for nasi lemak. Given their ingredient quality, sub 20 dollars(16-18-ish?) would be more ideal but i guess it is what it is
Give some credit to Chef Eng Su who passionately came up with the concept and the food. Without his passion and ideals there would not have been a coconut club. Even the name Coconut Club was his brainwave
Not 3 plates to me.......For that price I was expecting more than just stunning flavours but it just didn't give me that sense when I ate others at much economical prices.....likely more suitable for tourists
Hmm, what I think you missed in this series was the true essence of Nasi lemak without all the frills - a simple, cheap packet of coconut rice, with sambal, egg, ikan bilis and maybe some peanuts and cucumber…and always in banana leaf. Also, while all roads may lead to village park…look closer and you’ll find a secret narrow path, off the beaten track, to a makcik’s small stall in a kampung where nasi lemak heaven hides. Find that path.
Respectfully, this nostalgia is saved for those who experienced it mixed with fond memories. Subjectively nothing beats what you mentioned, but objectively is another story.
Sorry, what's the definition of "i dont even like beer that much" but then proceed to gulp it down? 😂 Probably the 2nd time happening in your videos that I have seen.
"The coconut fragrance is so full. There are two aspects to adding coconut milk to rice. One is the "lemakness and two is the fragrance, and this rice scores so high in both aspects. We had plenty of very fragrant coconut rice in the series, but some of them have had the "lemakness lacking. this doesn't. This has the extra layer of people putting in the time to blend difference variants of coconuts in order to achieve a lemak-fragrance balance that they like." Seriously??
I get that it's their restaurant and their rules, but honestly it comes off as a very snobby place just because they got a Michelin Bib Gourmand. And on that note, HOW is this even worthy of the Bib Gourmand at this point? Insane. I get that it takes time and money (and effort) to be able to deliver that level of quality but to say this is good bang for your buck, still not for me.
There's a Coconut Club in the East. No rules of such. I dont order drinks there. Tried the kopi with coconut. Not worth the price. Nasi lemak nice but better be good at that price lah. So cant eat too often cos too ex. Also prefer the otah to the fried chix. But my friend prefers the chix. Chendol nice. Cost $8 but worth worth when the portion was enuff for 2. Nowadays portion euff for only 1😒
Not sure about minimum spend for any restaurant. It's not about affordability but about what they expect from their customers. There are finer restaurants out there who don't impose minimum spend. No thanks
Went there recently and it was one of the worst tasting for value nasi lemak I have ever tried. Everything about it was so mediocre and below average. Chicken was super oily as well

My Coconut Club experience is similar to Alderic's. I like it but I wont go back because of the price. Worth a try but difficult to justify a return trip.
Will you also be trying Wild Coco? It's also on the higher end but I think it's much much better than Coconut Club, and cheaper too.

You should try nasi gurih in Aceh, Indonesia. Next to Masjid Raya Baiturrahman but only available in the very early morning.

Wow. Such an expensive nasi lemak. I'll have to go there one day to taste for myself how atas it is
Loved ur videos.....great food review
Yes, also educational, like the idea of adding some chicken umami taste to the boiling of the rice.
Another place for you to try. Sinpopo serves great nasi lemak! But also to the pricey side.
I also taste the rice first. If they can't get the rice good, what else can you expect?
How does this compare to nale?
Bone yellow could be kampung chicken.
Does that mean it's braised/slowcooked instead of grilled or fried?

Haha. Money is good. Truth.
yesss finally here been asking for it for a few eps
I'd like to mix the egg yolk with the rice, as a kind of sauce.
Given the (brobdingnagian) disparity in prices, maybe a taste/dollar or value/dollar metric would be quite informative?
