I searched if lao huo guo means the base is being recycled, and here is the answer: In the traditional sense, the old oil of old hot pot is salvaged from the residue in the hot pot soup, re-refined into essential oil, and then used in the hot pot soup. However, after this practice was exposed by the media in 2011, it attracted widespread attention and the concept of old oil was redefined. Today's old hot pot, old oil usually refers to the oil that is mainly made of butter, added with various seasonings, and repeatedly simmered for several hours. This oil is for one-time use and will not recycle the fat at the bottom of the pot for re-cooking like before.

oh they have all the usual normal meats and quite a wide selection of veg/mushrooms/tofu. I just went for the things that are harder to find in Singapore.

Did the service staff at the hotpot places look at you with a concerned look? The now defunct 聪生家 youtubers mentioned eating mala hotpot alone is one of the saddest thing to happen to Chinese. Usually means you had a very bad day or went through a heartbreak, lol.
now that you mentioned it, they were rather warm..
Funnily enough ive heard of friends of friends that work in hotpot establishments in Singapore (run by Chinese people from China), that resuses the food as well. Be it to serve the next customer or using the leftover meals and hotpot as their "company meal". Could be a culture or just plain saving money?
okay objectively, from a food safety perspective, it's not a terrible idea but definitely not something you'd expect as a paying customer.

oh for the market rate in Chongqing, $8.90 is already rather expensive. I believe the average is about RMB25-30. the shops sell 1jin/ 600g of hotpot base for RMB30-60, depending on the grade. The restaurants definitely get it much cheaper with their volume.
