Ice maker not making ice troubleshooting jumper test cycle

  • If your ice maker not working, not getting water, not making and dropping ice, I’ll show how to jumper diagnostic cycle and voltage test. This troubleshooting works on modular ice maker for Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, Jenn-Air, Kenmore models. If your ice maker is not getting water, the water inlet valve could be bad. Or the water supply tube could be frozen shut because of a dripping water valve. Either way, the valve needs to be replaced. If you have frozen ice cubes in the tray, but the ice maker is not dropping it, the temperature in your freezer could be too warm. Or the ice maker is broken.
This video is for entertainment purposes, and if you are not comfortable with electricity, please call a technician to troubleshoot it for you.

the jumper worked and the ice maker slowly lifted the ice out of the tray after the heater warmed enough to get the ice out. I'm looking forward to checking it later this evening. This was a very clear explanation and working item by item, the ice maker lifted the ice out and it slid into the drawer. Thanks so much!

Yes! Great video and very informative! Much better than the video's from the "experts" that I watched prior to watching yours. I like how you cover the main point at the very beginning. The freezer has to be cold enough to create ice. My ice maker worked fine for a few years but stopped making ice a few days ago. I did all the electrical and waterline checks but could not find anything wrong. Turns out that my freezer was too warm. The prior cooling level was fine until the last few days when the temperature in the home and opening of the freezer compartment has been increasing. Thanks for your help!

The motor for mine stopped working so I purchased a new motor that came mounted on an end cap. Only three screws held it in. There is a flat side on a shaft for the ejectors that needs to be lined up but that was easy. Also, I removed the bar that senses when the tray is full. I just pulled the one side out, installed the new motor assembly and reinserted the bar. It took maybe 10 minutes. It would take 3 next time. You don't need to remove the icemaker for this repair if it is the motor that's bad. This video shows you how to test the motor. I would use an insulated wire instead of a paper clip, it's 120v. Thanks for the video!

You can check the water valve by putting a jumper between L and V. Then push the freezer door button to close and you should get water to the ice maker. If you get water, it’s a bad ice maker. If no water, it’s probably the water valve.

Also... Try taking the icemaker out and cleaning the tray. I use vinegar or better still cleaning strength vinegar. remove the ice bucket for better access. Loosen, don't remove two 1/4 inch bolts that hold the icemaker to the side of the fridge. (Unplug the fridge if you are more comfortable) Unplug the electrical connection by squeezing two tabs on the side of the plug. Remove the ice maker from the fridge and then remove the one plastic cover held with a phillips screw. I let the tray soak for 15 minutes or so. You can feel the difference in the smoothness of the mold. We have fairly hard water where we are so it builds up on the mold and makes it harder for the ice maker to harvest the ice. Might have to do this every year or two depending on the water mineral content in your area. Easy no cost fix!

Thanks so much! My beloved ice machine in my 14 year old (GR2FHTXVS) stopped working. I used this trick to get the heating going to warm up the tray. A clump of ice was frozen to the side, stopping the arm from pushing out the ice. It’s now working after leaving the paper clip in for a few minutes!

do you mean reversing the arm where it was sitting or merely flipping it downwards?

@@zentember turning the ice makers off and back on then triggering the full switch 3xs puts the ice maker into reset mode. It will automatically go through all the cycles
And start over. Ours started making ice within a couple of hours after doing so.

@@zentember my ice maker has a wide flap that lets it know the container is full of ice. That’s the flap I’m referring to. He uses a wire jumper in this video to do the same. My ice maker is recessed in the door so i couldn’t do this without removing it. If your ice maker looks like the one in the video (mounted) in the top corner of your freezer then do what he is showing you to do. By no means am i discrediting the knowledge he is sharing.
