Exactly...I see that here in France too, they clearly try to "be cool" by acting insensitive.. Can we just gather to bring awareness about that specific point??
The meat paradox refers to a state, where one cares for some animals and harms other animals. Research shows it is caused and maintained particularly by six factors: Cognitive dissonance, dissociation, strategic ignorance, hedonism, custom, and marginalization of empathy.
He sat down thinking he could troll you and didn't realise he was way out of his depth. I hope he can look back on this one day and realise how arrogant and foolish he looked.
I’m once again astounded by Ed’s patience. At the start this student clearly is just trying to troll Ed by eating in front of him, saying he’d rather have his throat slit than get beat up, and not really engaging in good faith with any of Ed’s arguments but the fact that by the end he actually seems slightly more receptive and actually considers some of what Ed is saying enough to ask for his TH-cam channel is a testament to Ed’s rhetorical skills. Amazing!
Yes!! All the comments on here belittling this guy, who at the end of the video was interested in finding out more about the animal agriculture industry, are not going to help anyone. This comment should be bumped up to the top! 🙌
@@TapTapTaap I doubt that's the reason he is patient... It would be more logical to get to the conclusion that he's patient because it breeds better conversation
@TapTapTaap idk what you're talking about mate... I don't know if you replied to the right person, we weren't on that topic at all, please re-read my response.
Indeed. It seems to me logical dissonance is more common among those types than the general populace. As George Orwell said: "There are some ideas so absurd that only an intellectual could believe them."
Not really, you get idiots everywhere in life, let's stop putting these "clever" uni kids on a pedestal and treat them like everyone else, animal abusers or not animal abusers
Perhaps folks are having their notions they have of their own intelligence is being reinforced by the environment they are in. Maybe this leads them to believing their thoughts are smart and good.
Yes and he is trying to troll eating the animals, yet would be crying victim if people discriminated against him. Thats why I now ignore human issues, most are liabilities to the world not "gods gift".
He was honest at least - most people live in ignorance of their conditioned choices, and as a result don't understand why they make them. You shine a light on that ignorance, their cognitive dissonance comes out on display - "you're right, I don't know why I do the things I do, but reflexively I lean on that ignorance". It's just habit, and conversations like this can create the chink in the armour of ignorance that may allow them to make better choices. I don't think dogpiling on the guy for his ethical inconsistency is helpful, tbh - I know my thought processes were much the same (i.e. inconsistent and not really thought out or justified) before I went vegan.
Ed has more hope for humanity than I do. 50 years ago I started on this journey, and I can tell you it is a tough one. I thought that changing my own life was enough - even though it bothered me that other people still massacre animals. The more I cling to my beliefs - the more alienated from people I get. I pray that in 50 years there is more progress, less resistance, and more people like Earthling Ed.
The last few Generations that are old enough to live on their own be consumers drive a car be on their own. So-called adults have so much apathy and they literally confused cartoons anime games and movies with real life. They will draw cute animals and make these sounds which they recognize between each other and they have this incredible love for this fictional character as they eat a real animal and actually obese from eating massive amounts of animals and animal products. And when asked if it bothers them there's an absolute no it does not . Luckily these people are so lazy that they're not having children and they won't pass on their beliefs but the ones that do even treat their children as if they're not real. Their parenting skills are zero I don't even know how their children are going to be able to take care of themselves with what they're being taught the other side of it is just pure denial and religious excuses for why it's okay to murder animals it's the same outcome but for a very different reason. There is not much of what Grandma's used to be like. Everything is of convenience and again the word apathy is the only thing I can think of it's what they are apathetic unhealthy consumerism blobs. I'm just glad I'm as old as I am so that I don't have to see this for much longer. I've spent my whole life taking care of people and animals and now that it's my turn there aren't people like me that care at all in fact the people who work in the places that are the caring places are so rude and I have no idea why they're in a job that deals with people because they don't care. It's just a job this world the older I got instead of understanding things confuses me more 😢 I used to have a lot of Hope because I was very involved and I was surrounded by a lot of like-minded people 150 or so at a time a few times a week now I'm not around anyone so maybe that's the problem is I just don't see enough people who do believe and not harming other beings. I would like Ed to use words like speciesism and also talked about viewing animals and seeing that they do have feelings. Or showing him animals shaking in fear before they go into Slaughter standing in their friend's blood that died before them I've had chickens that lived in my living room that knew where to go to the bathroom they knew when I was going to sit down when they could get on my lap like the cat does and go to sleep. They had strong feelings about their siblings and their friends. I've seen it with my own eyes I've seen them mourn when one of their group dies. You can name almost every kind of animal and I have sat with them while they cry over one of their friends dying and sometimes it's not even the same species. The animals have more empathy than a lot of these people. And their parents did not teach them empathy the kids that go to these schools
You chose a way of eating makes you upset at the people around you and blame the people for you being upset sorry sounds like a problem that you created for yourself it’s not on other people to make you feel good about them
also some environmental destruction. Also linked to soya plantations, in turn linked to genocide of indigenous peoples in Amazonia. Also boosts pandemic risk potentially...
I don't think about morals when I'm eating the decapitated torso of a bird who suffered greatly in his short life living in filthy, crowded conditions then was gassed and suffocated to death, because I'm eating to survive and there's nothing else to eat from the hundreds of restaurants within walking distance. Yep, makes perfect sense to me.
Similarly, we can imagine after crossing that bridge a very scarce experience. Few options and social stigma. The morals on the otherside of this process must be deeply rooted to stay in that space of scarcity while social pressure is everywhere.
It was really heartwarming to see - if he's reading the comments here, I hope he isn't put off by anyone being rude. By the end, he definitely seemed to be thinking of the moral implications of his actions, and I hope he takes it one step further by aligning his morals with his actions. It's easy for us to make jokes when confronted with a topic that goes against our core belief system, but his demeanor at the end was definitely more open to accepting what Ed had to say 😊🌱
I really dislike these comments sections sometimes - people act like these videos are just opportunities to clown on non-vegans instead of appreciating the fact that these young people put themselves out there and engaged in a discussion which should be commended. Of course this guy's arguments were poor, he's clearly never thought about this before, but he's willing to learn and open himself up to criticism. That's a positive sign, yet everyone in the comments always goes "we're so doomed" it's entirely the wrong takeaway!
@@duewest1987 Yeah, the comment sections are wild, on Reddit too. A lot of the vegan commenters are extremely rude towards everyone, even towards people that ask for help regarding their transition from omni/vegetarian to vegan. Examples: Q: "Hey, I can't really deal with the vegan baking substitutes, how can I improve my vegan baking?" - A: "Just don't bake, as simple as this" Q: "Hey, I don't know what to do, I dislike most vegan sources of protein like soy and pulses." - A: "Just eat them anyways. After having eaten them a couple of times, it gets better." Sometimes I'd like to ask those people if they think they really are doing a service to the animals when they are behaving like this, not helping but driving away and insulting curious people. The guy in the video seems very open, he's never thought about this whole thing and I think he did start to question some of his beliefs, and that's great. I've witnessed discussions between activists and passer-bys in my country and the discussion never went this far bc people just went away shaking their heads (to be fair, they were nowhere as convincing as Ed), so this guy listening for 20 minutes is a huge win, I think.
A year and half ago, I went from vegetarian to vegan after watching your debate videos, Ed. I was desperate to counter your arguments with my own logic - because I wanted so badly for your logic to be faulty, so that I could continue believing that the relationship between humans and farm animals was, or at least could potentially be, symbiotic and blissful. I was wrong, and it feels so wonderful to know that I'm on the right side of history. The truth is, everyone knows that what we do to animals is wrong; most of us think that there is a "better/more humane" way, but you made me stop and think about all the options, and what steps we as a society would have to take if we actually want to create a world that doesn't rely on the exploitation of the most innocent beings among us. Thank you ❤
From one human being to another, thank you for having an open mind and your diligence to know for yourself that these sentient animals have a right to live their lives just as much as humans do.
Chill, not everony cares about veganism so much that they know all the arguments. You guys act so unpleasant. He sat down, had a conversation. What's so wrong about that?
@@komasaeufer it's not because he doesn't know the arguments, but because he sat down and purposefully ate chicken while smirking to troll/belittle Ed and veganism.
So many of the students in these videos have such a passive "would you care to enlighten/teach me" attitude. Are universities in the US not teaching their students to actively challenge and question the systems in place and their own beliefs? I'd love to see more of these debates in other parts of the world, Ed!
I’ve tried not to pass judgment on their attitudes in these videos, and there have been some kinder students, but I’ve noticed this as well. For some of them there is definitely a level of condescension and ego. It’s especially frustrating when some of them speak about their perceived privilege and how lesser fortunate communities don’t have the same options as them, while refusing to acknowledge that their decisions as people with privilege are directly affecting the options available to us who are less fortunate (referencing supply and demand and how it can affect availability and cost, here).
@@hivemindgoblin8540to add to your comment, I'm one of those less fortunate people. I've lived in a few countries and I can say that being plant based in America is not that tough but being vegan is not really. Ethical veggies are much more expensive and vegan cheese and dairy substitutes are even more expensive. Like if I can get milk for like 2-3 USD why would I get 10 USD soy milk?
"Without awareness, how can we live differently?" So true. For me, the pivotal moment happened after watching "Earthlings". "Oh my god!" was my reaction. "I can't be part of this"
Earthlings, for as horribly difficult as it is to watch, is truly life changing. Did I have constant nightmares for months after watching it? Yes. But did those give me the push I needed to get my head out of the gutter and stop eating meat? Absolutely.
Goes to show that even if you attend a prestigious school doesn't mean you have common sense. This makes me sad and the nerve of him eating a corpse while he's being ripped apart in this debate. ughhh
This discussion annoyed me a lot at first. His tone made me think he thought it would be funny to see how a vegan would react if he ate chicken nonchalantly during a vegan talk. But in truth I think he was honest when he ultimately admitted he simply didn't think too much of eating chicken. Thanks to Ed's patience I can see he left with a lightbulb on. That's not easy to do
There's a very touching hopeful moment as I'm making my way through the video where he transitions from like this tool hahaha I'm gonna eat chicken in front of the vegan cause I'm so cool to a few seconds after the 8 minute mark where he actually moves a piece of a chicken off of the noodles. And comes back to it around 8:20 and takes a bite full of noodles. I believe in veganism. Can change the world moment to moment. 🤞
@@OMGeorge7812 amazing catch! I noticed the guy's posture change a little after 7 minutes after Ed explains what generally happens to chickens in the agriculture industry. I feel like that was the moment the guy became serious about the conversation ❤
If the guy in the video is reading these comments right now I just wanna applaud you for being so open minded and giving such thoughtful responses and reflections. Hey Ed, you have truly inspired me and have helped me to learn more about veganism and how to talk to others about it better than I had been. I can say without a doubt you have been instrumental in my transition to veganism and it has truly changed my life. God bless you my friend!
I'm not understanding how one can be comfortable with eating a mothers child and not give a damn about her mourning, the exploitation, and slavery they go through and the health crisis it causes, yet they can back taking a pill that won't change a damn thing, but swear up and down that it does. I'm glad I was able to make that connection and not allow myself to continue blind and ignorant. Regardless of what anyone says, my direction and clarity will always remain. I want to thank you for your strength, your courage, and your will to educate others by speaking out for those who can't, although people can hear their screams yet decide to stay oblivious. Together, we continue to make a difference. Change is relevant, it's visible, and it's the way.
please, don't get me wrong. If you're truly serious about what you're saying, I would kindly be suggesting to seek help. it is obvious that you are having a hard time going through what you are going through, and maybe there are deeper reasons that should be addressed in time. on the other hand, keep in mind that your comments can have an equally harmful effect on people who are sensitive in nature. you're the one who bears responsibility for the words spoken, use them wisely.
@@v.a.n.e. Stop with the gaslighting. She said she's glad that she was able to make the connection and not continue to live ignorant of animal suffering. He brought up not being able to sleep at night because he's projecting the guilt he knows he feels, but is putting his tastebuds before them. I used to be like this, trying to justify it in the same ways but eventually the guilt stacks up.
Or maybe, just maybe, a tiny bit of option, is that he has some other troubles that keep him awake at night and have nothing to do with animals, food, veganism etc. I dont know, just a thought 🤷
@ostamaza22-yt4sq He didn't say that he personally couldn't fall asleep; he said as long as he can go to sleep with the thought it's fine for him to continue to eat animals. He is implying there's a level of guilt there that he is blissfully ignoring.

@@Mukti481 We don't need to eat meat for protein. In fact we don't need protein AT ALL. Not sure how you got that from this. It seemed pretty clear by the end that Ed has pushed his opinion over enough to consider how he chooses his food and to do more research.
Bravo to both of you! This student did well at hanging in there amongst the steady stream of clean and concise logic. Rome wasn’t built in a day and this is a great step forwards.
Underrated comment. I had a very similar thought on that part of the video when he literally invoked 'survival' like he's some zombie apocalypse prepper in the outback.
Funny haha But most vegans (me included) were like this at some point. I would justify, and even get angry when people would challenge my food choices. It's a normal response, no one likes people told that they're immoral, wrong etc... Even more so when it comes to food. I think he knows deep down how flawed his logic and reasons to eat animals are. Hopefully this conversation gives him (pun intended) vegan food for thoughts :)

This guy is so morally apathetic it’s actually astounding. How do you get to the point in life you’re advocating for positive mental health concern for child abusers in order to justify your immoral actions?
By the end, I appreciated how the student's demeanor changed, though - he was definitely starting to see the moral implications of his actions, in my opinion.
@@kal.el123 idk if we were watching the same video, then. He definitely ended off more somber and a lot more reflective, he took a solid moment towards the end of actually deeply, critically thinking.
@ Yeah I respect your optimist mate. But I don’t think that’s the reality of the situation at all. I don’t think this guy has the appropriate integrity or introspective propensity to have learned anything from this interaction.
Great one! It shows perfectly that for some of us it is very important to actually meet these animals that we usually consume. That’s why visiting sanctuaries is so transformative for many people. I work at the animal sanctuary and I see how people change through their interactions with our animal residents. Some people go vegan on the spot after their visit. So maybe this guy needs to meet chickens and spend some time with them. Amazing job, Ed, as always!
As if we’ve never seen someone eating a burger or chicken…they wanna troll and they don’t even know how to. We are aware people eat chicken, we have families and friends, we see it happening, we used to as well.

He cant see past his own biases and he so proud of his ignorance that he wears it like a badge of honor.
That's why he's in college. However, he was willing to test out his own biases and at least challenge his perceptions. Even if he started quite prideful.
"I didn't do anything to the chicken, I just bought it from somewhere." Its baffling that an Ivy League school student doesn't understand the concept of supply and demand...

I really dislike the disrespectful comments toward the students who participate in this debates. Most of us, at some point, used similar logic and had to face our own cognitive dissonance. Insulting others only pushes people further away from veganism, which is exactly why Ed uses the Socratic method to make his points-he doesn’t insult or call people ignorant, but instead encourages them to think critically. This guy may not go vegan today, but Ed made some excellent points, and you could see how uncomfortable he became by the end, even though he started out so confidently, even mockingly while eating that chicken. His logic is beginning to crack, and if he keeps challenging his beliefs, I think there’s a real chance he’ll come around eventually.
Well said. Even I feel very uncomfortable about these disrespectful comments. Veganism should cover broader stuff like being patient, kind and empathise towards all.
Veganism is the ethical principle that humanity should live without exploiting other animals.(Leslie J. Cross 1951) at 16:40 he says"if there was no meat to eat i would be a Vegan" and Ed agreed with his statement. but a Vegan is one who REJECTS all animal exploitation. it is a mindset of not regarding animals as resources, slaves or property. since Veganism is an ethical stance, a rabbit is not Vegan, and not everyone who ingests exclusively plants is Vegan.
The meat paradox refers to a state, where one cares for some animals and harms other animals. Research shows it is caused and maintained particularly by six factors: Cognitive dissonance, dissociation, strategic ignorance, hedonism, custom, and marginalization of empathy.
Ed, myself, and other vegans really need to confront the point this guy is making. Animals will continue to be slaughtered because we will never convert 100% of people to veganism. Marketing, not consumer demand, drives animal consumption and production. These videos are entertaining but we can't change enough consumers. We need to go to the source and work on a ban of marketing products, food or otherwise, that contain animals. If they can't market/advertise the products they won't produce them.
you're right that it's probably a mix of both, but it would be futile at least in the US as most true patriots would sooner give up their assault rifles than their hamburgers.
Agreed. That's why we need to orginize ourselves. That's why we need to abandon capitalism. The way that capitalism works, implies the need to a lot of products (including racism ans specism for example). The way the society works today can't let veganism thrive fully. We need to change the system, so we can controll the way things change. It will be difficult nonetheless, but at least we will have more active chance to change it.

Basically in a nut shell lol. Sad behavior
That is basically all the folks who pity party at butcher videos and dog videos with a mcnugget on their table

I am Vegan. I watch Ed to improve my soft skills. He is so patient and decent. His articulation is of a very high level.
Ah the same

Paul Bashir from AV is really good too
Ed has more hope for humanity than I do.
And their parents did not teach them empathy the kids that go to these schools
huge respect for making a change i assume was much more difficult in that time
When & why do you believe that humans began consuming animal products?
Humans werent designed to care about animals dying, its harder to care about them dying for food then it is caring for them to be alive
You chose a way of eating makes you upset at the people around you and blame the people for you being upset sorry sounds like a problem that you created for yourself it’s not on other people to make you feel good about them

Eating chicken does cause some human suffering, insofar as it causes PTSD and suicides of slaughterhouse workers.
And climate change, which hurts millions of humans in the global south, predominantly people of color❤
@ also the filth and disease that is spread by animal agriculture. Eating animal products does harm humans in quite a few ways.
And folk who work in slaughterhouses are also more prone to substance abuse, antisocial behaviour issues, domestic abuse.
also some environmental destruction. Also linked to soya plantations, in turn linked to genocide of indigenous peoples in Amazonia. Also boosts pandemic risk potentially...
And vox did a video about worker injuries in chicken processing plants. I've also been injured in an egg-noodles plant.
Most vegans in the past for many years didn't think about that.
Similarly, we can imagine after crossing that bridge a very scarce experience. Few options and social stigma. The morals on the otherside of this process must be deeply rooted to stay in that space of scarcity while social pressure is everywhere.
@@rondarkman. dunno mate you seem a lot more emotionally invested in what vegans do or think than the average vegan
Yes we dont cry about the animals we eat. Get it? Probably not
No one cares about a silly chicken. This chicken sandwich with cheese is delicious.
The energy change from the beginning of the conversation to the end says a lot.
@ I think it’s amazing how after truly thinking about it the trollness disappeared
@@duewest1987 Yeah, the comment sections are wild, on Reddit too. A lot of the vegan commenters are extremely rude towards everyone, even towards people that ask for help regarding their transition from omni/vegetarian to vegan. Examples:
Q: "Hey, I can't really deal with the vegan baking substitutes, how can I improve my vegan baking?" - A: "Just don't bake, as simple as this"
Q: "Hey, I don't know what to do, I dislike most vegan sources of protein like soy and pulses." - A: "Just eat them anyways. After having eaten them a couple of times, it gets better."
Sometimes I'd like to ask those people if they think they really are doing a service to the animals when they are behaving like this, not helping but driving away and insulting curious people.
Good for you for being humble and open minded enough to make the change!
You have the patience of a saint my friend.

So many of the students in these videos have such a passive "would you care to enlighten/teach me" attitude. Are universities in the US not teaching their students to actively challenge and question the systems in place and their own beliefs? I'd love to see more of these debates in other parts of the world, Ed!
Yes, almost as if they’re thinking “let’s see if this is worth my time, and my brilliance”
I’m afraid there are to many institutions in the US that are not teaching these kids how to think logically. Common sense seems to elude them.
There are vegan activists all over the world, and the conversations are rarely better than this.

Imagine your life was taken by force so that this guy can squeeze you out of his cornhole and flush. The world is overwhelmingly evil.
Veganism is the ethical principle that humanity should live without exploiting other animals.(Leslie J. Cross 1951)
at 16:40 he says"if there was no meat to eat i would be a Vegan" and Ed agreed with his statement.
but a Vegan is one who REJECTS all animal exploitation. it is a mindset of not regarding animals as resources, slaves or property.
since Veganism is an ethical stance, a rabbit is not Vegan, and not everyone who ingests exclusively plants is Vegan.
The meat paradox refers to a state, where one cares for some animals and harms other animals. Research shows it is caused and maintained particularly by six factors: Cognitive dissonance, dissociation, strategic ignorance, hedonism, custom, and marginalization of empathy.
Knowingly talking to a vegan in a debate while eating an animal is a form of insult. But since Ed is way to smart to fall for it.
Blame Ed for interviewing someone trying to eat
@@marvenlunn6086 blame the chicken for being so tasty, right?
Sometimes I find the 'so called' intelligent student types to be more selfish & self centred.
he sat there all smug but ended up really engaging, hopefully he continues thinking
First we need more vegans, 2% wont be making any political changes
True. Cigarette smoking was finally exposed for what it is, a cancer promoter.
You don't ban. You create alternatives.
Beautiful video as always Ed! Thank you!!
USC “Student”, wearing a Yale t-Shirt, cross front and center, yet completely incompetent, immoral, and detached. “Student” in quotes because it’s a far stretch for this kid. Wow. This Kid represents the future of society.
Poor guy. Once he reads all the comments he will never be the same.
As if....
The countenance of one man brightenedth another.
Thank you Ed ❤🍇🙏
He seem's unable to get it.. Another one of those Human's where the sphere of their awareness is like a dot.
You’ve got so much patience, I suffer watching this putting myself in your position, lots of respect for staying there and not walking away on this guy, I don't think I could stay there after 5 minutes of explaining the same for the 10th time
6:40 : 🔑“whats happening to the chickens?”
I'm glad they haven't yet developed smell into the audiovisual; hope we'll be allowed to choose (bc it's coming). I'm sorry, Ed, and TY so much once again!
He was irritatingly unconscious but seemed a bit receptive. A seed was planted
I looked at this debate and want to thank you! It is so beautiful to watch and hear your active listening and respectfull but critical replies, in a very non-violent way. I have a lot to learn from that! Thank you again!
This guy *really* thought he was being funny.
You can 100% tell he never intended to have a meaningful discussion. Heck, that long pause after the very first question says it all.
I bet that dude had that ancient cringy meme photo of that obese neck-beard holding a bucket of KFC at a protest on his mind and thought "hehe, time to trigger some vegans" then proceeded to make a damn fool out if himself.
