I just rewatched Savage Empire last night. The level of work and research you put into these videos is astounding. These are much appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to make such excellent videos. Greetings from N.O, La. USA.
You know it's too bad the Worlds of Adventure series didn't do better because I like the concept of Ultima type RPG mixed with early 20th century pulp fiction. The one I really would have wanted to see would be one based on Lovecraftian/Weird Tales type sci-fi horror stuff. Other good ideas are a Weird West game and Golden Age/Justice Society style superheroes.
I hate how this game squandered its potential. I LOVE some good pulp fiction, and Savage Empire absolutely nailed it. So what could go wrong with a beautiful SciFi story featuring a bunch of real yet still mythical historical figures? A lot, evidently. They should’ve maybe stolen a lot of John Carter of Mars instead, though I guess that would’ve just seen “Savage Empire… in Space!”. But, nothing wrong with that in my book.
I didn't get the impression Spector or George were all that interested in pulp (even Spector's original Savage Empire script was probably more Doyle than Burroughs - I think Aaron Allston probably added the more pulpy elements). Spector seemed more interested in history, and George more the use of sci-fi stories as allegory. I could be wrong though.
Thank you for doing these, always brings a smile to my face when I see an Edders update ❤ 💪 Loved this game when I was younger, my friends always looked at me like a maniac when I described the plot 😂
Interesting and impressive. I love the largely optimistic and imaginative atmosphere of the late 1800s, and the beautiful fashion if the time. I would have loved a section going through the story to its conclusion (more than a couple of glimpses of the outro), as I have no intention of playing the game myself, but I understand that not all reviews include that kind of spoilers.
The ironic self-deprecation at 1:36:33 gave me a hearty laugh. It's a cruel criticism but this game just makes me wish someone else took a crack at the concept. The story of the alien civilization and how it interacted with the human expeditions is pretty cool. A less obtuse take, less obsessed with cramming in as many historical celebrities as possible, and more focused on a satisfying gameplay loop would be nice.
I hope one day my life will depend on being quizzed on obscure forgotten 90’s rpg trivia and these videos will become useful, because otherwise I will have spent a lot of time watching and rewatching them for nothing.
Welcome back, I was beginning to wonder where you were but if you're going to return with a 4.5 hour banger every time you go AWOL, I'll consider myself very fortunate. May the Algorithm be kind, you deserve it.
Welcome back, MrEdders, we very much missed you. You managed to beat Majuular to the punch with this one. Going to soak in the majesty of a niche RPG review tomorrow!
@@MrEdders123 Finally watched the entire episode. You go into such amazing depth, it's almost dizzying. I would love for you to one day tackle the more obscure Black Isle games, like Lionheart or maybe even the SSI classics like Eye of the Beholder. Not too jazzed for the FMV review, but I always want you to do what you are passionate about. Hope the noisy neighbourhood is better and as usual, cannot wait for the next review!
Finally finished this. If this was made even more academic as revenge, I must say I've enjoyed it easily as much as your look into Empire. Though I will admit to getting lost to some degree around 5.2D to 5.2N because of the breadth of different aspects you had to talk about. Bonus points for using "Warren Spector" and "historical waifu" in one sentence lol. Thanks for the video!
Another fine video comes to a close. For the most part I agree that Savage Empire leans more toward my interests of the two. That said, I'd much rather this game existed than not, it's a gem in its own right, for the right person, my personal preferences aside. My preferences most certainly don't discount 1800s attempts at science fiction either, it's more the follow through I find issue with than the concept. On subject of it's point and click fused with RPG elements, I'm reminded of the Quest for Glory series. For that matter Heroine's Quest, Quest for Infamy, and even Mage's initiation that have inspiration in QfG. I view that lot as well done fusions of RPG and point and click adventure. I won't insult King's Quest, or others, but QfG always managed to ground it's puzzles better, for my money, in things your character could do, be it spells or skills, or even stat checks, if not item requirements as is more typical fare. So I just do t have the venom for the fusion that some have, in dome ways I view it no different than other additions like crafting, gathering, farming, building, keep management, romances, buying up property, starting a family, or kingdom management, among other additions, that we have seen RPGs add over the years. Babbling aside, thanks for another lovely video, most certainly worth the wait.
I say this with nothing but love since you make the best long videos about obscure games but this one was a bit meandering even by your standards. Still watched it twice.
After watching your Savage Empires episode, I actually kind of wanted to play it and thought the game seemed cool... I uh, don't want to play Martian Dreams. :p Also, all the disparate historical figures all just happening to be on Mars comes across as really contrived and cartoonish to me. Feels straight out of a Saturday morning children's cartoon.
By the time we got to U6, I would argue that the series was already mostly an adventure game, as the role play elements had already been so reduced as to be pointless. The stats and classes and all that was just an afterthought.
I can understand why you might find The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen to be fairly contrived, though I'd argue that the implausibility of the setting is intentional. If you think of it as a parody of series like Justice League of America that essentially frames the characters as the antecedents of modern superheroes it may be a bit easier to accept the contrivances, assuming that you're not already approaching it through that lens. That being said, it does carry a lot of the problematic aspects of literature from the period so it's up to you if you feel like it's justified as satire or if it's a deal breaker. Obviously, it's okay if you just don't enjoy it as a matter of taste.
If I ever find I don't have time to do these game retrospectives, I'll probably switch to a book/graphic novel channel since they're easier to produce.
@@josephzamer5802 In terms of the work involved, reading & researching a novel is much easier 😁 It's making it interesting to talk about in video form that's the problem :(
Hey MrEdders! I love your videos! Long form stuff is great. I'm working on a project to get content like yours on TV. Do you have a contact email for business stuff like that? I'd love to reach out. Thank you so much! NL
This game seems to be trying to please everyone, and ends up pleasing nobody, its not enough CRPG, not enough adventure game, the plot is simple but lack a bite that comes with some definitive message, in addition it scoffs at pulp fiction, which is, you know, fun, which, at least in regard to video games, trumps high philosophy ideas and snobbism that comes with them almost every time.
Was just thinking to myself "I need to rewatch some Mr Edders tonight" and boom you upload something new!

I loved this game so much when I was a teenager.
Let Warren Spector know because he's always talking about how nobody remembers it exists lol

long time my friend - welcome back and thank you for posting - love your videos but only so many times i can watch your backlogs :)
I appreciate the honesty of wanting to see Aiela in motion.
Just finished re-watching your Planescape Torment retrospective and this pops up. Truly spoilt.
glad i woke up st 4am today for this
I really love these extra long videos.
hear, hear!
A splendid video once again. The reasonable handling of the historical background is appreciated as it was with the Savage Worlds video.
Thanks! I plagiarized it all from Encarta '95 tho 😁
@@MrEdders123I'll take plagiarism over dripping with rage about the source material. 😅
Was working my way though your catalogue again this month so the timing is almost perfect.
You are criminally underrated. I hope this channel blows up soon. Good stuff. Keep at it.
Wow, I saw this was uploaded mins ago. I'm in. Thanks MrEdders123. Something to view as I pass out.
No wonder it took longer than you expected. 4 and half hour runtime, damn son!
Ehh it could've come out at least a couple of months earlier, but I was pretty busy and then got sick 🤐

My insomnia just started quaking in its boots. Thanks for another masterpiece
This video is a godsend. Thank you for putting this much effort in these. My whole workday just got a little better.
I have been waiting for this legendary Mr. Edders drop since it was last mentioned, Thank you :D!
Superb! I've had this awkwardly sitting in my Gog library for years and always wondered what the deal was. Great video, perfect bedtime story.
I really like how regardless of whether you like/dislike a game, you won't hold back on the criticism and the analysis.
Oh hell yeah, another upload!

Wonderful! A new Mr Edders video before the weekend. I really look forward to these!
Dang, the quality of Edder's writing is really top notch this video. Had me cackling, and the historical analysis is also great.
A nice big review to sink my teeth into, cheers!
4h+, what a treat. Glad you're still at it. Quality stuff. :)
What a fantastic RPG! Better than many AAA RPGs released today!
