I just started the video, but I just want to say that I still listen to this game's soundtrack for fun, even though I've never played the game itself. I am a fan of the composer Stéphane Picq, who also composed music for another Cryo game from my childhood: Lost Eden, which I also listen to the soundtrack to.

We're now so lucky to live the day Stephane Picq *remixed, remastered and re-released the Dune 1992 adventure game soundtrack* , and its' available on Bandcamp ! I just love this game, it's going on my cellphone and I play it via Magic DOSBox every now and then ^^
I'm not adverse to a high quality erotic game, but when they pump up the upper body of the females to such proportions that it would give them serious back issues in real life, it takes away from any immersion I might have felt while playing it. Long ago, when I was still a teenager, I had a friend who actually had to have her natural size reduced quite a bit in order to be able to function normally. Her back pains invalidated her to such extent that her medical insurance paid the entire procedure.

Agree. Gamers were different back in the early 90s. This is a typical review of this game by a younger gamer looking back, rather than being around at the time.

I remember playing Dune II: Battle for Arrakis on Genesis and always wondering if Dune 1 even exists. I think i only found out about it like a couple of months ago.
I feel David Lynch's Dune is pretty good despite its departure from the source material. Some of his choices might seem odd (e.g., the internal narratives), but I quite like them. It could be that I enjoy it as I saw the movie before I read the book.
This retrospective was highly enjoyable. I've no experience with Dune outside of Dune II and the Lynch movie and I stalled on the novel myself. Thank you for doing this. And it is crazy given the twists and turns with Cryo's game, I'm amazed it managed to launch given the circumstances.
I love this game, once you can speak telepathically you can have a lot going on all at once. This was one of the first games i played as a kid along with civ 2 and thought it was awesome!
Finding this channel turned out to be this year's best surprise :) I was led here because of my love/obsession with Infinity Engine CRPG games, but then I stumbled upon one of my favourite games from my childhood. This game, for me at least, is the ultimate hidden gem, the definitive early 90s game that "only you played while everyone else was obsessed with some mainstream game [insert game title here]" It was also the first PC video game that I got on CD after hearing about its existence. This game was such an integral part of my early 90s video game life, I was a fan of Lynch's movie to be sure, but this title did everything to expand the magic of the movie while turning me into a lifelong fan of Herbert and Dune. I get why some critics, back in the day and today, criticize the odd mix of adventure and strategy but for me, at the time, it was quite original and unheard of. I still remember that eerie feeling of mystery as you leave your base and visit the first sietches and later, the satisfaction of finally battling the Harkonnens. As usual, I can't praise this review enough, specifically the thorough research that went into this video, in fact, I would honestly like to thank the author for finally introducing all of us to the background of how this game was actually made. You couldn't find much info back in the early 90s and I was always wondering how we got two completely different Dune-inspired video games in such a short time. While I did enjoy Dune II: The Battle for Arrakis and its legacy as the formative RTS title is unquestionable, for me personally, Cryo's Dune made a much deeper personal impact. So much so that I installed it a couple of years ago because I couldn't remember one scene and watching a long-play video didn't seem good enough. Lastly, thank you for giving us a double review, I wasn't aware of the other game. Great channel, keep it coming.
Thanks very much for your comments and praise! Regarding the background to this game, the French journalist Daniel Ichbiah (sp?) deserves a lot of the credit, as 80% of the Virgin/Cryo background info in the video comes from his book (never translated into English unfortunately). I'm also not sure whether I found the book via the wikipedia article or The Digital Antiquarian's article on the Dune series. The latter has a very thorough writeup that I decided not to use as I was worried about quoting a mistranslation or something - I spent a lot of time in DeepL translate and asking for help from native speakers on RPG Codex. The rest is from old magazines, interviews with Westwood and Virgin regarding Dune 2 (they mention the "other" studio sometimes), and old French documentaries/interviews with Cryo. I'm sure someone who speaks passable French could do a much better job than me (I couldn't find more than a single page of concept art for Dune, for example, but others might have better luck). I should also give credit to David Balsamique and Behind the Dune, as I only made this video to justify the porn game review
Your videos are pretty much the best video game documentary content I have seen and it makes me not want to watch anything else. One of the few channels where turning on notifications is a must and I am excited every time I get one.
Yeah it was really interesting to research, I actually re-read the first trilogy and then did all the others due to this video. Cryo's Dune Generations sounded really cool even though I dislike multiplayer :(
@@MrEdders123 That is awesome. Reminds me I ought to get through more of the Dune series, its nearly been 2 decades since I was deep into fantasy/scifi. Thanks again :)
Much as I love the atmosphere and most of the art of the original game. To the point it's one of my favourite visual adaptation of the books (which I used to absolutely adore)... But I don't particularly want a remake etc. What I would love to see however is a modern attempt at the same style of game. The narrative adventure game with tactical elements you engage in by actually traveling around your bases and being ontop of things. And that the kink-game makes the same original more playable with some simple updates, even if it downscaled the strategy aspect to a massive extent, gives me real hope for that.
Oh my, I did not know about Behind The Dune, haha. Great video, Cryo's Dune is a pretty unique experience, which I sadly was not able to play in its entirety, because I had no clue what was actually going on as a kid. Nevertheless its atmosphere fascinated me.
Thank you so much for this video. As a lifelong Dune fan, I was unaware of the original game - foolishly never wondering if there was a game before Dune 2. Also Behind the Dune is -quite- the surprise. I would subscribe to you for this video alone if... ...well I hadn't already because of your other videos.
That was definitely really interesting. The things I like most about your reviews are that you talk about the game’s development, the context for why certain things happened and what was going on at the time, and that it’s relatively free of bias/blinded by nostalgia with you giving praise where it’s needed while simultaneously essentially roaring what simply does not work (the gameplay definitely sounds like an awful experience). It would have been interesting to see what the cancelled sequel would have been like. They definitely world have made a lot of weird changes to the lore. It’s funny how bad the Harkonnens voices, outfits, and other stuff is. Too bad they’re basically a joke like you said. It’s so weird how a parody game is more faithful to the source material using different things in the lore to justify different events. I didn’t even know that existed until now. It’s weird how Flash games really range in quality in terms of art. Some look amazing with very good animation, while others are complete trash. 1:15:10 Chris Chan was arrested for that. We know from his jail letters he currently thinks he’s Jesus. When I first learned about Chris it made me really sad seeing how people were bullying an autistic man. Then as a learned more about him I began to realize what a truly terrible person he is, and started laughing more. Now after the Barb incident the only two things that make me feel bad for him are when the trolling went too far (Bluespike, the Idea Guys, and a few others), and when watching old footage of him as a kid/teen knowing what this poor kid would become (he was definitely screwed over because his parents were idiots, and the Internet allowed all kinds of people to mess with him). It’s funny how bizarre the faces are. It looks so bad😂 Dune has my favorite depiction of prophecy out of anything how it’s a mix of fabrications meant to control people, and actual prophecy albeit incompetent. In a way it reminds me of what they did in Morrowind where you aren’t the prophesied reincarnation of Lord Nerevar, but you can become him by quite literally mantling the myth. Dune’s commentary about how a charismatic figure/prophet impacting the world is another aspect I really like. I actually have personal experience with that because I grew up Mormon, and only recently found out the founder was a lying conman. It is so bizarre how the faith broke into a bunch of different beaches, and the largest one the Brighamites (that’s what I was from) were able to grow. This obvious farce has somehow survived into the modern era. Although, it’s definitely shrinking now that the Internet is a thing. Unless they reform it by shifting over to viewing the different stories as symbolic rather than literal and get rid of the backwards stuff it’s going to implode eventually. I actually have ancestors who crossed the plains and settled in Idaho/Utah. The historical Jesus definitely had the biggest impact on the world. It would be really interesting to see what the real person would think of what his small following became, and how radically different it is from the original teachings based in apocalyptic Judaism. I actually really liked the David Lynch movie. Even though it was weird, and took some odd liberties. As for the new film I still haven’t quite figured out what my thoughts on it are. It’s really too bad that so many things are trapped in licensing he’ll like that music, and the Dune games. There’s plenty of games I really want to play again, but don’t want to get all the overpriced old hardware necessary to play them. I played Dune 2 and just thought it was ok. It was fun, but very shallow. I’m definitely spoiled by newer rts games. But, I still really like old games despite being a zoomer (luckily I’m not the cringe tidepod eating kind, and I avoid social media like the plague). They’re an interesting experience. Amazing video! It will be cool to see what else is down the pipeline.
One thing I wish I'd been able to find is more concept art for Cryo's Dune. I really tried my best to hunt some down but I could only find some sketches in MEGA magazine when they covered the Mega-CD version, and one or two unused backgrounds for the PC CD release in a French preview. I'm sure there's a treasure trove on some old French demo CD somewhere... Re: Chris I saw that lmao
@@MrEdders123 There is some footage of a preview version where paul has a different face (more consistent with the art style), so it's likely that both him and 'feyd' (aka sting) art were the result of the artist being pressured to make their faces similar to the actors. I'm not sure you mention it later or with actual citations later since i haven't watched the whole video yet, but that's what i always thought.
@@MrEdders123 Certainly enough of them made over the years. Not really my thing unless there's a really good game wrapped around it but the market certainly exists.
Great video! I love this game despite its oddities, maybe not the most mechanically developed game and certainly overshadowed by Dune II birthing the RTS genre shortly after, but for me this game has one of the finest atmospheres, and maybe the best original soundtrack in all gaming. This was my first exposure to the world of Dune as a child (along with Dune II), and to this day this game and the Stephane Picq soundtrack is the first thing that comes to mind when Dune is mentioned.

Ok. After the Behind The Dune segment I had to hard subscribe. Taking a pron game seriously without hurr-durr nor moral grandstanding - that takes Guts and Dedication. You sir earned my respect.
“As a general rule, pornographic parodies are not considered to be particularly respectful towards the source material.” That was drier than an excellent Muscadet.
This puts so much of Cryo's Ring game into perspective. In case you don't know, it was a space opera take on Der Rig des Nibelungen. It's a fever dream of a game.
Wait. Whoa. CAPTAIN BLOOD had a musical score by Jean-Michel Jarre?! You just went right over that! Even *this* Jarre fan did not know . . . well bless my 8utt!
The game design could be said to be comparable to Lords of Midnight (1984) which itself is an attempt to make a Lord of the Rings type game. The idea is that the game could be completed as an adventure by doing the equivalent of delivering the ring to mt doom or by mustering a large army on the map and winning a strategic campaign. Then it suggested that the "epic" victory would be to do both. The "epic" genre might include a lot of things which might seem boring to the modern ADHD friendly RTS/Cinematic mind, such as the well known epic poem of the Iliad having a whole book called the catalogue of ships which is just a big list of Greek dudes and their rides.

The documentary about the failed Dune movie is super interesting. Some of the folks that worked on the art ended working on “small” productions like Blade Runner, Alien, etc. (and also Salvador Dalí). Also the studio name is pronounced CREE-YOH, not CREEYU. I remember that Captain Blood was as fascinating as it was incomprehensible for 10 years old me haha 😅 (especially since I didn’t exactly got the game legally, so I had no documentation, no nothing).
1:12:17 this is not a rumor. This is true. There is A enivromentalist route in the game. I played this game extensively in my youth when the game was released. To achieve this don’t attack the harkonnen mainbase but transform the whole planet. In the end screen you see the whole planet of dune turning green…
Ah OK, I did a search on it before playing the end sequence, and the sources I found said it was just a story. They explained that it actually broke the campaign scripting if you tried to win that way, so I didn't bother trying it 😶🌫
In the version I have played (CDROM, v3.7) it's possible to use ecology to make Harkonnen troops abandon fortresses because it grows north and destroys the spice in the region. But you can't defeat the Harkonnen palace that way. It seems in some (non CD) versions of the game it is possible to use ecology to reach the end, e.g. this speedrun: th-cam.com/video/9rpM_Mf0HCw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=3fCSpeLiEs9hCs_4&t=1859 The ending @hansepansnl2481 describes sounds more like the Ordos ending of Dune II, I wonder if you're getting confused with that? th-cam.com/video/3o_wVe-oobY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=W8oQwIIV8AzGoeA5&t=79
I never played the granddadddy of RTS to be honest, but that probably because I didn't use a PC until 1996. Also quite nice timing with the new Dune movie that came out not long ago too.

@@hanchiman The rough cut was 4hrs. Frank Herbert talked about some of the stuff that was cut in the foreword to the short story anthology "Eye" - "Filming Dune did something else. I have David to thank for teaching me to write screenplays. During that education, I was able to influence some decisions about the film, but I was unable to influence the ending or how much would be cut for the theater. From the approximately five hours of film in the original footage, only about two-fifths emerged from the cutting room. What was cut? Here's a partial list for the aficionados: The confrontation between Stilgar (Everett McGill) and Duke Leto (Jurgen Prochnow) where Stilgar spits on the table-the gift of his water. Development of the relationship between Shadout Mapes (Linda Hunt) and Jessica (Francesca Annis). Most of the love story between Paul Maud'dib (Kyle MacLachlan) and Chani (Sean Young). The fight where Paul kills a Fremen and cries (giving water to the dead). Development of Kynes (Max Von Sydow) as the Imperial Planetologist and (most vital) the place of melange in a space- faring society. The relationship between Paul and his mentors: Duncan Idaho (Richard Jordan); Thufir Hawat (Freddie Jones); Gurney Halleck (Patrick Stewart), and Dr. Yueh (Dean Stockwell). The death of Thufir Hawat. The relationship between Paul and the Fremen widow, Harah (Molly Wryn). Scenes with Jessica and The Reverend Mother Mohiam (Sian Phillips) that would have made the Bene Gesserit sisterhood more understandable. That's only a partial list." A small amount of deleted footage was used for the TV version (usually referred to as the "Extended Edition"), but Lynch had nothing to do with that and asked for his name to be removed (he's credited as "Alan Smithee" in the TV version). Thereare also a couple of fanedits using some of the deleted scenes, I think "SpiceDiver" is the most well-known one.
Nice work. Always liked this game, been playing it since a very young age (DOS CDROM). The death scene used to scare me. I could never get the fabled 'ecology' ending. Very interesting to see the collection of original reviews and concept art you have. Do you know where I can find more?
Unfortunately I only found the concept art in a couple of places - Mean Machines October 1993 issue (a preview of the mega drive version), and some CD-ROM version renders in issue 49 of Gen4, at least at the time I made the video - I think both are on Archive dot org. It might be easier to find on French sites, as the game is much more well known there 🤔
I loved the management part. Not all games must be RTS games. Some can be exactly that, a slow paced kingdom management and exploring game. You feel like a diplomat, a general and a king, not a grunt officer that moves tanks on a map. Excellent adventure, superb game, my no 2 after the original UFO.
OLD COMMENT: (other bits are redacted too, but meh) "Ooo... Okay, lets see if you notice the difference between the floppy and the CD travel system... ;) Ah, no floppy version? The pre-rendered flight scene is a CD exclusive feature; apparently, in the floppy version, you can see sietches and other things you can stop at as you travel if you keep an eye out, but the nature of the FMV flight scenes can't account for this and can be regarded as inferior for offering significantly less player feedback. Frankly, when I learned about this change, I couldn't go back to the CD version, as the FMV flight sequences bloat the whole gameplay loop to the detriment of the title." NEW COMMENT: This is a pretty damn comprehensive coverage of the game. I'd have to watch it again to see if there was anything that you might've missed or neglected to comment on, but all in all, yeah, this is about as thorough as you can get without being bloated. Well done.
Used to play this game high af, needless to say I was never able to complete it but the experience stays with me forever. I really cannot wait what game you will be playing next, secretly I hope it will be Star Control 2.
Wasn't expecting anyone to talk about Behind the Dune, ever, in a review of Dune. And talk about it without stopping every 5 seconds to say how much they hate X and Y, boobs too big, etc.
Yeah I don't see the point of porn/hentai game reviews if they're just going to either condemn it or pretend they're too good for the content. Comes off as very insecure, and why even bother if they're going to take that approach.
I didn't know much about this Game, but watched anyway because I just like your Video-Format. While watching, I realized that the this Game looks oddly similar to "Lost Eden", and a quick Search made me realize that Lost Eden was made by the same People, so I guess they were utilizing the same Engine too, thus the Similarities. Any Chance to see that Game on your Channel anytime soon? I think it would fit right in. :)
This video inspiered me to go do some reading on dune, and i would constantly read "Fremen" as "French" for some reason, and i was quite confused as too how and why, people know that they were very specifically French
Quite a video. I’m glad you took the time to point out the game’s many many flaws. It’s a game that I appreciate… from a distance. I don’t think you can say it’s a game thah must be played, but it’s interesting to think about how at odds the idea is against making a game. Dune is so large and encompasses so much that any game that tries to tackle ALL of its subject matter is doomed to failure. You seemed to speak a bit disapprovingly of the idea of breaking off a small slice, but with something like Dune I fear that would be the only option when trying to change media format from book to game.
I agree it's much easier to actually make a good game by focusing on a small slice, I just wanted to give Cryo credit where due for trying to adapt the story as a whole, which has duels, diplomacy, leading warbands, managing the Fremen tribes, superhuman powers etc. Tough to represent all that in one game, especially with how production costs have changed. Fun fact: there were one or two attempts at making a Dune mod for Mount and Blade, but they're both abandoned. Would be fascinating if someone tried it again for Bannerlord one day!
I have a soft spot for the older games and I love those portraits with small moving mouths/eyebrows. There is such a creative beauty to it. Like those old Wing Commander games or Master of Orion 2. Anyhow, great review of one of my first video games ever.
The way I pronounced the words is in line with either the in-game pronuncation or how Herbert himself prefers to say them, even though they sometimes differ from both the original language and the standard English pronunciation. There are some videos on the topic here on TH-cam, it's quite interesting! edit: I do mispronounce other stuff in my videos though lol
@@MrEdders123 It's one thing to read hour long scripts flawlessly, and another thing entirely for someone to watch and make note of anything that sounds off. That said, I don't find that it detracts from your video in the slightest.
I assumed it was pronounced "Cry-Oh", the regular English way (it's also pronounced that way on a special track on the Spice Opera CD), but when I watched several French interviews, they all pronounced it "CriYU", so I tried to copy that. McLachlan I always used to call "Mc-LACK-lan" but I watched a couple of interviews and they pronounced it the way from the video. I have no idea how "Balsamique" is pronounced though. On the subject of pronounciation, all the Dune words I pronounced the same way as Frank Herbert (you can find a video on the topic from a Dune channel), but tbh I prefer the Lynch movie's version of Harkonnen and Chani. "Har-KON-nen" sounds much more menacing lol
@@hanchiman hahaha those Euros. Trying to grock how "Featherborough" is supposed to be pronounced as "Faenshow" is a futile effort. Must be something toxic in the English channel.
this game was such a perfect execution of the events of the book into a strategy / adventure game. But the continued reuse of the engine to make other adventure games didn't ever work out so well ever again.

Oddly enough, while i remember playing both Dune and Dune 2 quite a bit back in the day (2 more so due to its greater replayability), and despite 2 being in most metrics the better game, i always liked 1 more. Possibly for the same reasons i like Pirates so much. But, in the end, while it may be the inferior game, Dune 1 was the better Dune experience, if that makes any sense.
I watched a few videos in French and they were never consistent (c.f. "Infogrames" for the same issue). In the official Spice Opera soundtrack they pronounce it the English way. I suspect they were being "arty". 😁
I don't think it's possible to make a "Dune" game. There's far too much going on in Hebert's book. Luke Skywalker the game doesn't exist, but there are 100s of Star Wars games. Like you suggested, it's probably better to focus on one specific aspect of the Dune universe and gamefy that. I know Stellaris can be modded somewhat, but I for one would love a Landsraad 4x game.
Yeah, it bothered me that the geopolitical...er, galeopolitical? - situation in the Dune setting, with the balance of power in the Lansraad etc. seems more interesting in the first book than all the subsequent novels.
It definitely looks like a romance novel cover (I recall a couple of Darrell K. Sweet's Wheel of Time covers were criticized for this, albeit the art style rather than the photography). If I ever do a Pirates video I'll have to look into it.
"Pre Myst Era of Game music"... DUDE. Brian Eno must have been the biggest inspiration for Rand Miller when doing Myst and Riven. How can you say those are Hollywood-style soundtracks?! God this is a bad take. Maybe just retrospect on those two classic Cyan games and you might revise this opinion?
I can't remember where I said that in the video, but I was probably referring to production values and wipeout of 80s/90s game composers that the CD-ROM and hiring of "professional" composers brought on.
Dear mister Edd, since you played Behind the Dune, does the game feature :codexisforindividualswithgenderidentityissues: characters? The sandtrout is already a bad sign. Regards.
@@MrEdders123 Thank you for the answer mister Edd. Following up question: is the player forced to interact in order to progress or is it entirely optional?
@@noirdessaim lol, er off the top of my head you have to interact with them as part of normal gameplay, yes, as they're an important side character. The sexual content isn't forced on the player though.
Pretty sure the word is pronounced "seech"...at least that's how all three movie adaptations pronounce it. Otherwise great video though, have been really enjoying your various retro reviews!
It's how Frank Herbert pronounces it in official material. There are quite a few differences between the various adaptations and/or Herbert's version (e.g. Harkonnen, Chani, Tleilaxu)...and in some cases none of them are saying it the "correct" way (original Arabic, for example), though "correct" is obviously up for debate. I went with the Herbert version in most cases because it's easier to find guides using that than jump around in the movies and tv shows trying to find the word again :D
@@MrEdders123 Interesting! Thank you for sharing that - I had never watched any interviews with Herbert, but had watched all three adaptations, and the only one I didn't recall for sure was "seech" was the TV miniseries's pronunciation.
@@matthiasbreuer8710 It's actually from an audiobook Herbert narrated himself, or maybe it was some promo thing, I can't quite recall. You can find it on youtube if you're curious. Personally I prefer some of the alternative versions - I think "Har-KO-nnen" sounds much more brutal and menacing than "HAR-konnen", for example.
@@MrEdders123 Ah, good to know. I rarely listen to audiobooks (novels, anyway), preferring to read at my pace, but I suppose at least when the book is read by the author themselves, learning how the author expected certain words to be pronounced might be as good an argument as any to do so 🙂
I used to be one of those people that lamented Jodorowsky's Dune not being made because he was known for being one of the artistic underdogs that wasn't beholden to popular fluff and dated tropes. Then I actually watched his sick garbage films, and I'm glad he didn't "rape" this movie. I know how he thinks and the world would be better without creepy mentally ill people with issues and hatreds vomiting their BS on screen for other neurotic people to salivate over. I think my sympathy was better placed in John Boorman who was supposed to give us Lord of the RIngs, which I believe he could have insightfully produced in the spirit to which it was intended. Instead he at least was able to give us Excalibur, but at the same time when we finally did get LOTR it was dumb, long winded fluff for the masses and nothing more. I have nothing against trippy films either if the result is more than just vomiting bitter, relentlessly negative, nonsense onto a screen. I guess it's pearls before swine, and J obviously knew his audience. I have no idea what went wrong with David Lynch. He was insightful and talented enough to pull this film off, so why did he go for sensationalism over substance? It had some strange qualities like in an MTV music video, but there was no depth, no sophisticated imagery, the acting was bad, it went for the gross makeup, and it felt like a mainstream action film of it's time. I don't even think it was incomprehensible and too short. It was if anything too long, boring and straight forward, and the characters had no dimensionality.
Lynch to this day is extremely sensitive about the topic and consistently refuses to discuss it. IIRC he said he tried to make the movie the studio wanted rather than what he wanted, and that he would never do that ever again. The preface to one of Herbert's last books (Eye, or something) has a section where he talks about Dune and he's actually extremely forgiving of it.
There are quite succesful board games. The OG Dune the Board Game (still has new versions made), Dune Imperium (won many awards) and the upcoming Dune War for Arrakis. It's a good time to be a board game player.
Y'know, it's kind of appalling that a porn spoof still sounds better than anything Brian Herbert and that hack Anderson have produced. Absolute drivel, the whole bloody lot of the post-Frank Herbert books.
Yeah I read the whole series before making the video. I can see why Anderson was a pretty popular Star Wars writer though - as genre fiction it would've been fine.
I just started the video, but I just want to say that I still listen to this game's soundtrack for fun, even though I've never played the game itself. I am a fan of the composer Stéphane Picq, who also composed music for another Cryo game from my childhood: Lost Eden, which I also listen to the soundtrack to.

The completely serious review of the porn game was flipping hilarious. So glad I found this channel.
I needed to distinguish my video from RagnarRox's Dune review somehow...
@@LarixusSnydes Personally, I fuckin' love the insanely huge knockers :D

Agree. Gamers were different back in the early 90s. This is a typical review of this game by a younger gamer looking back, rather than being around at the time.

This game was a legendary memory from my childhood. A great game, even today.
I remember playing Dune II: Battle for Arrakis on Genesis and always wondering if Dune 1 even exists. I think i only found out about it like a couple of months ago.
Yeah I played Dune 2 on floppies, Cryo's Dune was a "Did you know...?" thing to many people.
I feel David Lynch's Dune is pretty good despite its departure from the source material. Some of his choices might seem odd (e.g., the internal narratives), but I quite like them. It could be that I enjoy it as I saw the movie before I read the book.
Yeah I rewatch it every now and again. A shame Lynch is still sore about it and refuses to revisit it with a real DC or anything.
Finding this channel turned out to be this year's best surprise :)
I was led here because of my love/obsession with Infinity Engine CRPG games, but then I stumbled upon one of my favourite games from my childhood. This game, for me at least, is the ultimate hidden gem, the definitive early 90s game that "only you played while everyone else was obsessed with some mainstream game [insert game title here]"
It was also the first PC video game that I got on CD after hearing about its existence.
My favourite set of classic character portraits, closely followed by the advisors from Alpha Centauri.
What a treat. That you also include stuff in and around production is much appreciated :)
This. Sounds like a REALLY cool game. Like. The kind of thing that I would love to see a more polished version of sometime.
I think the BTD developer revisited it recently and said they have plans to expand on the strategy mechanics, such as adding ecological elements.
Top notch research and presentation Ed. Keep it up!
I'll try :D
Oh my, I did not know about Behind The Dune, haha. Great video, Cryo's Dune is a pretty unique experience, which I sadly was not able to play in its entirety, because I had no clue what was actually going on as a kid. Nevertheless its atmosphere fascinated me.
The mechanics were something that put me off playing it for a long time, but it gave me a lot of material to discuss in the video at least :D
Excellent! Many hours cruising the wastes listening to Yes and Floyd..

Great to see "flesh and blood" review, and not usual "performative puritanism", like some other reviewers love to pull off.
It looks so bad😂
Dune has my favorite depiction of prophecy out of anything how it’s a mix of fabrications meant to control people, and actual prophecy albeit incompetent.

Great video! I love this game despite its oddities, maybe not the most mechanically developed game and certainly overshadowed by Dune II birthing the RTS genre shortly after, but for me this game has one of the finest atmospheres, and maybe the best original soundtrack in all gaming.
Awesome dive into this

I was rolling my eyes at Crayoo. It’s Cry-Oh.
It seems in some (non CD) versions of the game it is possible to use ecology to reach the end, e.g. this speedrun: th-cam.com/video/9rpM_Mf0HCw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=3fCSpeLiEs9hCs_4&t=1859
The ending @hansepansnl2481 describes sounds more like the Ordos ending of Dune II, I wonder if you're getting confused with that? th-cam.com/video/3o_wVe-oobY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=W8oQwIIV8AzGoeA5&t=79

@@hanchiman The rough cut was 4hrs. Frank Herbert talked about some of the stuff that was cut in the foreword to the short story anthology "Eye" -
"Filming Dune did something else. I have David to thank for teaching me to write screenplays. During that education, I was able to influence some decisions about the film, but I was unable to influence the ending or how much would be cut for the theater. From the approximately five hours of film in the original footage, only about two-fifths emerged from the cutting room.
What was cut?
Here's a partial list for the aficionados:
The confrontation between Stilgar (Everett McGill) and Duke Leto (Jurgen Prochnow) where Stilgar spits on the table-the gift of his water.
That's only a partial list."
A small amount of deleted footage was used for the TV version (usually referred to as the "Extended Edition"), but Lynch had nothing to do with that and asked for his name to be removed (he's credited as "Alan Smithee" in the TV version).
OLD COMMENT: (other bits are redacted too, but meh)
"Ooo... Okay, lets see if you notice the difference between the floppy and the CD travel system... ;)
Ah, no floppy version? The pre-rendered flight scene is a CD exclusive feature; apparently, in the floppy version, you can see sietches and other things you can stop at as you travel if you keep an eye out, but the nature of the FMV flight scenes can't account for this and can be regarded as inferior for offering significantly less player feedback. Frankly, when I learned about this change, I couldn't go back to the CD version, as the FMV flight sequences bloat the whole gameplay loop to the detriment of the title."
NEW COMMENT:
This is a pretty damn comprehensive coverage of the game.

Yep, as mentioned in the video, Cryo viewed "Lost Eden" as a bit of a spiritual successor to Dune in some ways. I will definitely cover it one day.

He mispronounced quite a bit of nouns actually, just a bit of nitpicking on my part.

I always call Cryo studio as "Crue-Ooh", also Kyle Maclahan, I say "Mack-Lahan", hahahaha

Love the game
it's not kreeoo... it's Cry-O, like cryogenics
They weren't consistent about it in interviews lol
this game was such a perfect execution of the events of the book into a strategy / adventure game. But the continued reuse of the engine to make other adventure games didn't ever work out so well ever again.
Took a listen from Spice Opera. I can imagine it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea. *I* loved it, though.
Yeah it's a bit...arty for me :p
Hello! The studio version of this OST, Dune Spice Opera 2024 Remaster is now available for download in 96/24 Hi-res Audio Digital Album, and soon on CD!
BONUS GAME OST dual soundcards (AdlibGold-RolandMT32) included!
Modern tools allowed significant improvement of stereo field, as expanded frequency spectrum and unprecedented dynamic response.
2:10 i think someone said the price of spice is the value of 2 💎 .
Played it. But never finished it. I was always behind on my spice payments.
31:59 so like Crusader Kings or another Paradox game but with more graphics and maps with less depth
Never thought I wanted to see a sex dune game until now. Thanks m8
I feel like you should have more subs
Wtf with "cree-you" for Cryo ??!
Even in french it would be "Cree-oh"
I watched a few videos in French and they were never consistent (c.f. "Infogrames" for the same issue). In the official Spice Opera soundtrack they pronounce it the English way. I suspect they were being "arty". 😁
Awww, Behind the Dune... Truly a game of a generation of coomers.
I love that movie 4:54
Why is Vir in the game? Does those copywrite holders of Babylon 5 know?
36:21 LOL! Who thought that cover was a good idea? Instead of actual pirates we get porn pirates?
It definitely looks like a romance novel cover (I recall a couple of Darrell K. Sweet's Wheel of Time covers were criticized for this, albeit the art style rather than the photography). If I ever do a Pirates video I'll have to look into it.
Das it mane.

@@Tacgnol9001 now everyone gets that rating.. if everyone's special, doesn't than mean that nobody is? makes u think..
18:07 whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?
Regards.
yeah there's a futa character
@@MrEdders123 Thank you for the answer mister Edd. Following up question: is the player forced to interact in order to progress or is it entirely optional?
@@noirdessaim lol, er off the top of my head you have to interact with them as part of normal gameplay, yes, as they're an important side character. The sexual content isn't forced on the player though.
@@MrEdders123 Thank you very much for the answers mister Edd, you're pretty cool even though you're fat. Cheers.
@@noirdessaim You're welcome, I'm laudably trim though.

Am I pronouncing Cryo wrong?
If you're a French company, possibly :p
I rarely listen to audiobooks (novels, anyway), preferring to read at my pace, but I suppose at least when the book is read by the author themselves, learning how the author expected certain words to be pronounced might be as good an argument as any to do so 🙂
@MrEdders123 Is it like how Jekyll was supposed to be "JEE-kul" but was changed to "JEH-kul"?
T-that's how you pronounce Cryo and Infogrames? Really?
Yes.
You keep saying Kruyu...and i really dont care how they think it's supposed to be pronounced, its like sandpaper to my ears.
sietch, atreides, cryo..... this was hard to get over..
Edders pronunciation of things like onfograms and ondead is why I keep coming back
cryo is a weird word to mispronounce considering you sound english.
It's how they pronounced it in promotional videos from the 90s.
Y'know, it's kind of appalling that a porn spoof still sounds better than anything Brian Herbert and that hack Anderson have produced. Absolute drivel, the whole bloody lot of the post-Frank Herbert books.
Yeah I read the whole series before making the video. I can see why Anderson was a pretty popular Star Wars writer though - as genre fiction it would've been fine.
true
Cree-uu?
Cryo - as in "cryogenic suspension"
That's how they pronounce it in French interviews 😶🌫
