This comment made me pause & holds even more weight after finding out whoever owns Game Informer deleted their 30-yr archive. A veteran game dev has been telling her stories & talking about her professional experiences on her own channel/name --- "Laura Fryer". She was on Gears of War & has a video called "Chainsaw Hoax" in which she breaks down a documentary/reality TV show about GoW in which the TV producers decided to simplify the narrative by lying about her; the show made Laura Fryer out to be a villain who wanted to delete the Chainsaw when that didn't happen, & she takes us thru how is happened in that video. She has a lot of insight & speaks to what OC says about the history of the industry/art of video games potentially being lost.
In the spirit of the other commenter, I'll offer up Marsh + Grim Beard (& gently point to IFinishedAVideoGame's comment up top; he's a great longform video slinger). There are a bajillion "Marsh" on YT but this one specializes in the Japanese end of games near the same time frames Maj is looking at, like Shin Megame Tensei/Last Bible series. If you like Japanese games + light novels or are interested in the form, Marsh does good work. Search with a game name in with the username to find the channel. & Grimbo...Grim Beard is a unique presence. You'll either take to it right away or not, but there's a place in my heart just for that channel. Try the Deus Ex series, it'll give you a good idea of the channel frame story/style.
I'll post the same comment I posted in the Patreon channel in Discord: "Another fantastic one. I've noticed how your production value is increasing bit by bit each time. I appreciate how you spend a solid amount of time talking about the developers and their journey towards making the game. To me, that's as fascinating at the games themselves. Well done! I'm really looking forward to you playing Ultima VII. I have stories about playing that back in the day and the nightmares I had getting it to run on my PC at the time."
@@Majuular I'm a nerd for games, but I'm also a nerd for the industry and how they're made. Probably because I never got to live my younger deams of being a game dev. But given how that industry is, I think I dodged a bullet.
The developers and process behind the making of a game should always be discussed. Look at the way people discuss Doom 1&2 and who made a made a map (Carmack, Romero, Petersen, Green, Willits, Anderson, McGee) and what their style/philosophy was and how it contributed to the game.
I think you'll get a kick out of this, a friend told me "I just watched a video about crazy Saturn RPGs" and immediately I was like "oh, nice, I love Majuular" but they had no idea who you were, it was just a video that got recommended to them. But they checked, and it was your video, and I took the opportunity to tell them about your other great videos, including the Ultima series.

It's rad that gaming has become a multigenerational art form/activity to bond over. I shall forever remember Sherry the Mouse. Her Easy Cheesy disposition inspires creativity in me, and I shall make use of the ideas she's fostered sooner rather than later! Another excellent video Maj!
I'm playing a bit, Sherry is a pretty good companion if you keep her, once you level her up she can use any equipment, and with her very high dexterity she gets a lot of actions and as she starts at level 1 it's easy to buff her strength. She has unique traits that she can share a square with another NPC and also pass through closed portcullis gates. I have her dual wielding a sword and main gauche, which is a little hard to visualize.
@@darrellparfitt5908 Sherry with a pike ftw! Just kidding, that is hard to picture but very cool + funny to try. I'm glad you've gotten practical use from her, that shows some creative play.

@@analogmoz I can understand it from the perspective of the gameplay being severely clunky, for some, especially the absolute nightmare that was inventory management. Kinda like the combat for the early Persona games; for some folks, it can be a downright show-stopper and, for others (like myself) its somethin' we can readily work with and/or around.
The snark will be powerful for IX. If it's not, I will be rather disappointed. I mean, I had a bleeding edge rig and it didn't work for years. And we didn't have patches back then like we do now.
This happened with the Saturn video too, I checked YT, nothing new, I go make a snack and come back, new Majuular posted 9 minutes ago, I i cannot stop winning
Majuular, thank you. You have given us such great videos, analysis, and sleeping aids. I had quite the rough week, and now that it is finally over I get to rest AND I have a new Ultima video to watch? From the bottom of my heart, thank you. I cannot express how much my mental state improved just by seeing the thumbnail on my feed.
More often than not, I have issues sleeping; On especially bad nights shows such as Futurama and the like serve little more than a reminder that twenty to thirty minutes have passed and I'm still awake. Your content however usually puts my mind at ease as I lose track of time and slowly drift off while I focus on the topic of the video instead of the passage of time, and for that I thank you Internet stranger. TLDR; Majuular and Grim Beard make my favorite sleep content \m/
"Its a good thing they trusted the avatar with this (the Armageddon spell)" "..." "Hey avatar why are you making a quicksave?" I laughed. I love this series so much. Keep on keepin' on, man.
I have to say, you're doing a really important work with all these Ultima retrospectives, giving them the exposure and analyse they deserve and I greatly appreciate it
Something bothers me about how the Avatar is constantly depressed in between games. It's probably meant to be a commentary on the mundanity of life in comparison to more fantastical settings, but considering that Ultima 4 was primarily about learning virtues and life lessons, it would have felt a lot more meaningful if that Avatar was able to take some of those lessons with him into the real world.
The Avatar has experienced things that would be expected to result in severe PTSD, but he can't talk about them even under cover of doctor patient confidentiality without being committed to an asylum. No shit (s)he's depressed.
The whole "buggy-at-launch" thing only gets worse. Bugs aside, they aren't _that_ bad, in the case of Ultima IX you could argue the bugs are the only serious issue
I'm loving how incredible this series of reviews on an unfortunately obscure but highly influential series has been. I cannot wait for the video of VII, my favorite of the series. If there is one series i'd die for a remake is this one.
Ultima VII was a huge chunk of my non-farming childhood. I can't wait for the joy of a Canadian spring, grass finally starts growing, Worlds of Ultima is finished being analyzed, an in-depth look at Garriot's disdain of Electronic Arts and Scientology is finished being scripted. The Lord British Murder Saga sent me over the moon
Hey Majuular. Just wanted put a comment to say that I got recommended your 3DO video and after taking a chance on it I am glad I did. I really liked it and every other piece of content of yours I've watched. it is rare I find a new creator that I greatly enjoy, and so your stuff is really a treat. Working my way through your catalogue now, including the Ultimate Series. Keep up the great work man, you're awesome.
As great as his stuff is, I will say; *_wait to watch the Lost Odyssey video until you play the game first._* It's such a masterpiece, you really want to go in fresh. Ditto with Skies of Arcadia to a lesser extent. Although LO is only for the 360, 360 emulation is quite easy these days and LO emulates quite well. Xenia/Xenia Canary are the recommended emulators. Lost Odyssey is, in many ways, the true Final Fantasy XIII, with Hironobu Sakaguchi writing and overseeing the game's development (along with bringing over many of his staff from squenix) and Nobuo Uematsu doing the music.
This is a wonderful document on a historically important game that not many people today have played or know about. This title kickstarted my PC upgrade story back in 1990 and brought lots of joy to me and my friends in middle school.
Thanks for this retrospective. All I know of Ultima is Spoony's old videos and he didn't say much about 6 (despite saying it's his favorite out of the series); so I very much appreciate all the info you have here.
I never plated the Ultima series, but I love watching this series because it does document the early history of RPGs and it has influences until today - the plot twist with the gargoyles was really interesting
I am enthralled by every videos you’ve made, so much so I drop everything to watch them. This retrospective of a game series I’m very fond of, thanks to Ultima Online, especially. I’m looking forward to the next upload!
I discovered your channel about two weeks ago (via the 3DO video, I think) and have been having a wonderful time going through your videos. You're well-spoken, knowledgeable about your topic, and your scripts are excellent. (I've been repeatedly impressed by your vocabulary.) In describing your retrospectives to friends, the closest comparison I've been able to come up with is Defunctland: interesting history in a niche corner of the world, conscious of the surrounding culture at the time, excellent script delivery, and enough personal character to be memorable without dominating the tone. That's especially true for the Ultima series. Thank you for your hard work! Your videos make my dull job much more bearable.
This right here is peak content. One can be as good as Majuular, but one can't be better. I enjoyed every second of it, I paced it, savored it over the weeks, and now I beg for more. Thank you Majuular for your incredible passionate work!
I fell asleep to this and my dreaming brain conjured a Neopets brand deal where the story was continued as part of a browser game where you could collect furries. I have a really vivid memories of the little explorable towns of Britannia, the human settlement, and the gargoyle town.
Bro, did you know that the original Baroque is on the Nintendo switch (NTSC-J only)? I don't have a Sega Saturn and I don't like emulating so Nintendo saved me for once. The music is so great, but that gameplay is... interesting. Thanks for making that awesome vid.
The man rising through the TH-cams is here with another straight banger!! You're crushing it and you've become one of my favorite channels ever. Not just now, ever! Hell yeah!
I have only watched a bit of it yet, but I can already tell it's a winner. This game is very special to me, and I'm enjoying your history lesson. Looking forward to diving into the rest. Stellar work.
I love the history of the developers and their making of the game, even more interesting than the game itself! But then such a thorough analysis of their work feels as much like it’s paying tribute to them as it is adequately preserving and analyzing important works in the canon of the medium. Another great video! Can’t wait for the next one!
I find myself wondering how much he's going to talk about _Wing Commander_ in the lead up to _The Black Gate._ If for no other reason than to explain the Kilrathi ship sitting in a farmer's field outside Britannia.
Do you characterize them the same way? The culture of gargoyles sounded fascinating. I immediately wanted a coffee table art book on Gargoyle Culture/Natural History.
@@picahudsoniaunflocked5426 Not quite. I included creatures that shared the appearance of the Ultima 6 gargoyles in the Earthdawn role-playing game as the result of a failed experiment intended to create new life (a new species was successfully created, but some of the ingredients were questionable, leading to an appearance the other Name-Givers would abhor). More recently, I included gargoyles in a New World of Darkness campaign about fallen angels (a rewrite of the older Demon: The Fallen game). In that game, the gargoyles were heavily inspired by the movie I, Frankenstein, could either appear human or transform into winged stone giants, and were violently opposed to fallen angels (it was a long campaign, and the players took it in unexpected directions that ended up with the players both making peace with one faction of gargoyles as well as finding out their true origins, which also triggered a civil war within the gargoyle people).

I know it's not easy to get these out at a timely pace so please keep in mind that your work really does make a positive impact on alot of folks.
As far as long winded retrospectives go my dude, you make the best ones. so many games that don’t get the love they deserve (Tales of Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia, Xenogears) you go in depth not only with the lore and story but the development, the developers themselves. Right down to the composers, you show a true love for what you do and reflects so much in your videos. Thanks for being you Majuular. I look forward to the rest of the Ultima series and hope you may get to cover Suikoden at some point (if it interests you, some of my favorite games).

@ponyote Majora's Mask is definitely tied with Ocarina of Time for me. I loveeee the darker tones it takes. I was able to play the original final fantasy when I was younger.
Dude, what are the chances of getting an interview with Richard garriot and just chatting about his life in the industry and beyond?
Once every five years or so, I find a TH-cam channel that simultaneously piques a new curiosity and scratches the new-found itch.
I'll shamelessly plug Josh Strife Hayes (plays, says, etc) and Sorted Food. For very different reasons.
Thanks again Parallax, appreciate you 🙏
Love learning about devs, glad other people enjoy that part too.
@@Majuular I'm a nerd for games, but I'm also a nerd for the industry and how they're made. Probably because I never got to live my younger deams of being a game dev. But given how that industry is, I think I dodged a bullet.
I totally agree I’ve liked learning about the development of the game as much if not more than the gameplay itself
The developers and process behind the making of a game should always be discussed. Look at the way people discuss Doom 1&2 and who made a made a map (Carmack, Romero, Petersen, Green, Willits, Anderson, McGee) and what their style/philosophy was and how it contributed to the game.

You have skyrocketed up to the status of one of my favorite content creators. V stoked to watch this, great way to start a weekend.
Thanks very much, glad to help you ring in the weekend Retro.
I think you'll get a kick out of this, a friend told me "I just watched a video about crazy Saturn RPGs" and immediately I was like "oh, nice, I love Majuular" but they had no idea who you were, it was just a video that got recommended to them. But they checked, and it was your video, and I took the opportunity to tell them about your other great videos, including the Ultima series.
couldn't agree more. I always get so pumped for another dose of Maj
@@kie2 The intro music really puts me in the mood. It totally has that "everyone grab your snack & find a comfy place to watch tonight's Main Event!" vibe that watching rented movies on Sat nights used to have in my family.
My uncle had this on his pc when i was a little kid! He would let me try it, i had no clue what I was doing! Sent him your video, what an awesome nostalgic trip! I appreciate your work!
I bet he was stoked to get it from you. So many great memories playing these games with my best friends from Ultima1 all the way through.
It's rad that gaming has become a multigenerational art form/activity to bond over. I used to work with some seniors & I always thought they'd lose their sh-t with excitement if I could show them Skyrim & let them play. Every elder person I've shown video games to has been intrigued, once we get thru the tech fears.

I killed Sherry in ultima underworld 😢. At the moment it was just a rat in the castle

Seriously hope these aren’t too much of a slog for you to do, but always happy to listen to my favorite boy regaling the tales of Lord British!

Same.
Play the Ultima games, they are full of old school awesomeness.
PIZZA JUST ARRIVED AND A SURPRISE MAJUULAR VIDEO ?!

Delicious!
I was not expecting a full Ultima retrospective but im happy you are doing so. The Black Gate was my fav but getting insight on the older ultimas is a lot of fun. Thanks Majuular, these are really well done!
I appreciate that, and glad you like them! If I was going by what TH-cam analytics told me, I probably would have stopped making them after Akalabeth/Ultima 1. But when I'm told a video has "underperformed", it makes me want to do a whole series out of the video in question out of sheer defiance. Glad others are getting a kick out of the series too.
@@Majuular when you cover niche but beloved topics it may not go viral quick but it will become THE go-to series on youtube for reference since there's so little so well made about it. It pays off in the long run. Your channel is for Ultima what Marsh is for classic Megaten
I second j.2512's notion. I've been on a classic roguelike binge and got curious about the history of crpgs. I would not have discovered this channel if it weren't for the magnificent Ultima coverage you'd done. @@enzo6474 same. For some reason 8 really stuck to my mind. I wouldn't want to replay any of the Ultimas (I suffer from chronic lack of nostalgia. So 99.9 percent of old games are unplayable to me now), but especially not THAT one. Platforming in isometric? God bless you.
I've seen spoonies series as much as next guy, and i waited very much for your take on ultima 6 . And its exactly what i wanted.

Yeah, Spoony not seeing the phase-shift from V to VI always bothered me.

Yes!! Thank you for another installment. Ultima V will always be my fave, but I can't wait for VII. And a Snarky review of IX.
Pre-emptively tempering my snark.
The snark will be powerful for IX. If it's not, I will be rather disappointed. I mean, I had a bleeding edge rig and it didn't work for years. And we didn't have patches back then like we do now.

Your ability to weave information on system and history with plot progression never ceases to amaze me.

Correction: Lord British is not immortal. Rainz ganked him in Ultima Online and no amount of crybaby revenge bans will ever change that.
I have to say, you're doing a really important work with all these Ultima retrospectives, giving them the exposure and analyse they deserve and I greatly appreciate it
With all sincerity, you are the only youtuber that I actively am excited for new videos from. ❤ nothing touches that Majuular quality.
Maybe morals and life lessons were learned, yet we still get depressed during our time here.
morals and life lessons is always learned in our lifetime, it's human emotion we can't control and learn
You may learn all the lessons of the world - but you won’t be able to dictate your heart what and how to feel.
Depression is the main antagonist of the series that was meant to be defeated last
The Avatar has experienced things that would be expected to result in severe PTSD, but he can't talk about them even under cover of doctor patient confidentiality without being committed to an asylum. No shit (s)he's depressed.
Excellent. Morbidly curious about the videos on the games AFTER Ultima VII.
You and me both 😬
IX is gonna be a hoot and a half. I hope.
You do this game and origin justice Majuular. I put so many hours into this game on snes and you just nostalgia'd the hell out of me.
I appreciate these videos. I was injured last week and have been stuck at home, they make the day go by a little faster.
Recover swiftly.
This is the first Ultima that I can actually see myself playing. Beautiful video as always.
Moonring and SKALD are a bit like modern versions of Ultima V too.
Another masterpiece! Loving these deep dives.
Thanks for all your hard work on these vids! I absolutely love your content! Keep up the amazing work my friend!
You're welcome! Thank you for watching.
I never plated the Ultima series, but I love watching this series because it does document the early history of RPGs and it has influences until today - the plot twist with the gargoyles was really interesting

Dang, new video? Thank you for putting these out, my man. ❤
I discovered your channel about two weeks ago (via the 3DO video, I think) and have been having a wonderful time going through your videos. You're well-spoken, knowledgeable about your topic, and your scripts are excellent. (I've been repeatedly impressed by your vocabulary.)
In describing your retrospectives to friends, the closest comparison I've been able to come up with is Defunctland: interesting history in a niche corner of the world, conscious of the surrounding culture at the time, excellent script delivery, and enough personal character to be memorable without dominating the tone. That's especially true for the Ultima series.
Thank you for your hard work! Your videos make my dull job much more bearable.
Anyone else be giving majuular like 30 views per video falling asleep to them at night?
This right here is peak content. One can be as good as Majuular, but one can't be better. I enjoyed every second of it, I paced it, savored it over the weeks, and now I beg for more. Thank you Majuular for your incredible passionate work!
I fell asleep to this and my dreaming brain conjured a Neopets brand deal where the story was continued as part of a browser game where you could collect furries. I have a really vivid memories of the little explorable towns of Britannia, the human settlement, and the gargoyle town.
Haha I watched this video again.

I have only watched a bit of it yet, but I can already tell it's a winner. This game is very special to me, and I'm enjoying your history lesson. Looking forward to diving into the rest. Stellar work.
It's kinda funny seeing Mondain become this chill, given his skull alone has disastrous consequences
Ultima VI has had such an impact on me personally that gargoyles have been a recurring feature in my own pen-and-paper RPG writing ever since.

@ponyote so, you were able to personally experience a lot of the older generation of consoles/computers that led up to what I started with! What a treat. I love learning about the history of gaming and Majuular makes it very easy for me to passively and vicariously experience the oldies. I was born in '91. @@inekleonyaj I was born in 1976. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was amazing. I personally loved Majora's Mask for its creepier vibe and the way you could collect masks. @ponyote Majora's Mask is definitely tied with Ocarina of Time for me. I loveeee the darker tones it takes. I was able to play the original final fantasy when I was younger.
