But I didn't go into much detail about living hinges. There are tons of designs that you can use to make a living hinge. The tighter the spacing ie the smaller torsional link the less load per link. So the greater the flexibility. Try increasing the space between the slots and see what happens. The flexibility is now decreased.

Will a living hinge work on acrylic?

I've never tried. But acrylic would not be as flexible as wood.
