- In this video I discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages or designing with hardwoods. You can create some truly special pieces. And you can drive yourself mad figuring out what works. It can be expensive. But I will show you some tricks to keep your cost to a minimum.
Sorry, I missed the live. The replay was great. I picked up about 5 pointers. Thank you.
Amen!
Very nice tip on extending the tab to account for the saw blade kerf. (BTW, I also started filling a cart @ West Penn!)
I use the close path with tolerance. This has saved me lots of time when I can’t find the ends of the path.
Same here. 3PM on Saturday is hard.
This works best with 6mm material, but can be used for 3mm.Tip for putting the bottom feet on your box. Adjusted for 3mm.
On 3 mm lumber, make the slots 1.5 - 2 mm deep (not all of the way thru, and the width .5mm wider than you material). Make the tabs .5 mm shorter than the mortise you just cut.
Doing this has created a traditional morris and tenon joint, and you don’t see the tabs protruding thru the bottom.
I have found that you can do some traditional jointery using the roly. It does take same thinking and planning first, but it does work. Using mortise and haunched tenons can hide all the joints. This works very well with plywood (think veneered) you won’t see the edges of the plywood.
A trick I learned when cutting the top off a box is to use a dab of hot melt glue to hold the pieces together as you rotate the box and cut. This help by keeping the top and bottom together until all 4 sides are cut. The hot melt glue should be easy to pull off. Experiment to find the best hot melt glue that is easy to remove.
Sorry, I missed the live but seen the replay. Love the box, nice job Steve. is this Box going to be at the store??
Eventually. Still fine tuning things.
?? The question was about how the software is making the determinations of keeping things square. By using the two original points and the additional points you provide each time you reposition the wood.
My roly honeycomb is not perfectly square, really close but not on all corners.
??? Vcarve Pro and Lightburn are very similar and the learning curve is relatively flat. The only issue is the cost of Vcarve.
