Comments saying ''I haven't paid anything and I still win", there are so many factors to consider there. For one, you are on a team with 4 other players. There is no way of knowing the ratio of players that have paid for content vs those that do. Your whole team might have level 30 items for all we know. Second, just because someone paid for the items doesn't make them a good player. You might be a really good player yourself, even without items. But Skill vs Skill, if you meet a player with the same pokemon at the same skill level as you, they will have the advantage. There are so many millions of situations and combinations in this type of game, it's impossible to predict what COULD have happened if a player had different items. But every time an enemy JUST gets away, or you JUST die in a fight, those situations could have been affected by paid for content.
There is no way to have an equal playing field across all games and players while some players can pay to move quicker or have extra health. Not when it would take over a year and half to earn the same rewards IF you played every single day in that time. I tried my best to explain why a game like this can be so easily thrown out of balance by even the smallest of stat increases, but it's hard to explain to people unfamiliar with the genre.
Wow a moba game that isn’t fair what’s so ever skill vs skill but with the item advantage they win. Lmao. Like u said team game there will never be a time you are 1v1ing cuz people are always coming and going. So their is no way if your a smart play to be alone and “1v1”ing. Especially in this game where the lanes aren’t that long. People will come team or enemy either way. You need to play smart not hard. You can play hard and that will get you far but never get you all the way. You guys are just hot garbage at the game. Period.
I believe a lot of the disagreement has to do with the idea that because there is a max lvl to the items people will eventually be able to catch up. it is different from what most people see as pay to win. currently people who disagree see it as pay to get ahead. but it is not like other games where there is a pay wall. there will be a day when anyone who wants to be competitive will have all lvl 30 items, because of that the game maintains the validity of a competitive atmosphere.
many people might see it like buying a boost. yes you get to lvl 30 faster, but eventually everyone else will get there too. so maybe you get a high rank season 1, but then season 2 comes and everyone has lvl 30 items.

I am a f2p and spent not as much time in the game as some may think yet I do have a couple lvl 30 items, paying accelerates it but f2p players can catch up

I thought the entire concept of MOBAs is that everyone starts at equal grounds and work their way up to the top and by the late game, your skills and teamwork matters, whats the point of a competitive MOBA if you already can have advantage pre game?

That’s why MOBAS in general are just absolute dog water, if you’re not dealing with unhinged balancing; you’re dealing with more unhinged people and developers. LoL is probably the best yet unfortunate example.
That being said though, Unite is at least better than LoL personally (Probably because it doesn’t have an actual text feature to make things more hostile). And while I find P2W crap despicable, it doesn’t affect playing without paying for anything too much despite the imbalance as you can still be strategic.
If anything it adds some challenge, and the satisfaction of unlocking everything without having to use a shortcut makes things a lot more earned. So anyone who buys their way to the top are missing out in like more than 80% of the whole experience, so really they’re not playing the game at all mostly. At least that’s how I look at it.
The only thing more toxic than that really are people who feed and idle all game, though those things are at least reportable.
Edit: Just saw another comment talking about how even if you play without paying, when things get nerfed you have to play another hundreds of days to get another viable Pokemon up to snuff… I guess at least that’s more experience and practice, even then though I can see how it’s too easy to pay in now. P2W needs to be removed from any and all games, even if people already brought things and crap they need to be removed…

@Artifice it's called patience... Like Resident Evil remake 2/3 and Re8... You can unlock everything with time and patience. Or pay to unlock all bonuses. It's only pay to play if you have no patience. I've unlocked all top tier Pokémon and made Master League all free. Research is key. They give you most good Pokémon just for logging in and doing challenges

Welp 1 month later pokemon unite released on mobile and now giving away 3 30 grade upgraders (i think thats what they're called) from doing something with held items but you just need to use them wisely

I disagree some what with this video. I am playing Pokémon unite for 1 week. I am almost maxed 4 items without paying! And I don’t play that much. There is loads of opportunities to get free upgrades and coins for upgrading

That would be great but it won't happen. They want people to feel that their purchase was justified. I wouldn't be surprised if the game actually matches you against crappy players after you purchase something so you feel like your purchase was worth it. Kind of like that Activision patent from a few years back.

[DISCLAIMER: None of the below "absolves" Unite; the business model is bad, it does qualify as "paying for power", and the game doesn't deserve anyone's money. I'm just saying you can play and win for free perfectly fine _in spite_ of those things. And I encourage anyone to *_NOT_* give the game any money. Now, with that out of the way:]
Things _changed_ since this video was made. The game's now balanced to where a new player can, without paying and within the a few weeks, obtain one desired Pokémon for each role, and equip all of them with one LV30 item and two LV20+ items (LV20 is the _important thing,_ where the item's special effect reaches max rank; from there to LV30 is a minor stats plus). Meaning, the way the game is _now,_ you can get competitive-ready within a few weeks without paying.

I still think it's not an okay business model and therefore doesn't deserve money - so I'm not actually trying to encourage anyone to give this game money; I will _discourage_ people from doing so. But just _playing_ it without spending, yeah, I stand by it, that works like a charm.

You see, the strategy of Tencent is to give the game away free, frustrate you during gameplay that you're not performing as well as you should and then take money from you through upgrades...that's how it is with Genshin Impact too... my nephew already spent more than $200+ on the game. Honestly, I rather put down $50 for BOTW.

@@augistineaquinas3325 You get max level tokens that automatically level your items to level 30. That probably was not a feature before... I don't play a lot but my Gengar has all level 30 items rn. I only manage to squeeze a little of my time with my friend every few days to play some ranked and that's about it. So it isn't that hard anymore atleast.
Btw I have not spent a single ticket on Item Enchancers at all since I had no idea you could do that.

The scary thing is that many games are transitioning to this model of gameplay because it’s much more profitable. Think about it. A standard switch game costs $60 and normally people wait a year or so to find another game. Mobile game currency costs that alone for a bundle and developers don’t have to worry creating a new game.
The big problem I have with "but you don't need to pay" - it literally takes well over a year to get to the same point as somebody who spent ~10 minutes and almost $200. Same thing with virtually all other F2P games.
the big issue here is we are comparing NO items to Max items. not lvl 1 items to lvl 10 or lvl 1 to lvl 20 or lvl 1 to lvl 30 or lvl 10 to lvl 30.
level 10 for all items wont take over a year, shoot, it wont take even a month.
you do not need to pay to win in order to have all the items you need in a week. and even then it would be fairly hard to not have at least 3 at lvl 10 which imo should be a baseline comparison.

14:53 this clip is insane. Not only did the boosted defence let you live to run a little. The bonus speed let you run long enough to not get hit. and the faster cooldown let you actually attack at the same time that the enemy caught up. Quite literally every item right there saved you without them you would have lost in 3 different ways.

Been playing for almost a month now and never spend money in this game, and still good at it, if you want to pay and get the items first ? Sure go for it, but if you dont ? You still can get those items from level up, the most important thing in this game is teamwork not items

Na if you know the items you need for the pokemon you choose you can do it without paying. My main is Absol. I did his critical hit build without paying a dime and he's a beast.

All you have to do is to get paired up with 4 other players that spend money, and you win.
They pair up players based on experience, so newcomers don't get massacred as soon as they get the game. So to get paired up with other spenders all you have to raise in the ranks.

I've been playing ranked games an going up without paying with my main being greninja and literally got to a point where i lose 1on1 situtations because of the item level diff, you still can win without paying but it gets way harder the more you rank up

I have gotten over that hump now. I have maxed items now, without paying. It was a little grindy. But, honestly, calling it pay to win is so disingenuous. It's a free game that's a little grindy. If you want loads of characters and stuff, sure, you might have to pay a little if you don't want to grind. But, it's literally not even that grindy. We are a week in, and I haven't played A TON of hours, and I'm nearly out of "Great" Ranking. I'd say that's not that bad.
The real problem is not pay to win, it's that the characters are pretty unbalanced.

It takes you like 3 days to get three lvl 10 items and less than 2 weeks to have them up to lvl 20, which is what most players are still running in masters. Having these items any higher does not increase the main effect any further but only gives you some more base stats. So you can use money to get an advantage (which is dumb) but it isn't that bad^^
Dude Pokemon Masters went so heavy on monetisation it was insane. I was enjoying the game grinding a fair amount, i was even thinking "damn with all this grind im gonna be OP for a while" all of sudden in 4-5 battles i hit such a huge pay wall and I realize the amount of money or time I'd have to spend to even do anything i just dropped. And it was also a shame because I was enjoying that game too. And as much as I don't like Tencent, i dont think they are the ones to blame for that one

I think Nintendo had more to do with this than anything. Tencent generally avoids pay-to-win concepts. League, AoV, CODM, and Chess Rush have practically no pay-to-win elements. I find it strange how this is the exception.

Good stuff. All the maths really makes you realise how expensive all of this is. I like how you mentioned that different characters need different items meaning you need to spend more if you want to play as different characters… Add on to this the fact that patches come out and modify how the items work making some items better and worse, this effectively means you have to keep paying money to stay relevant in different metas.

All this, and not to mention the severely limited amount of coins and energy they let you accumulate per week 😔 I'm loving this game so much but the thorns it has are so SO apparent it really hurts.
It's very grindy for sure but every 2 days I get like 4000 coins and I try to complete the events and challenges..... and I play a decent number of games

Also, I've been trying to look it up with no luck, but do you know if the coin boost card boosts the amount of coins you get outside of battle as well?
@@Alfredo-lol thats because you might still have the beginner tutorial quests. If you're done with that you get absolutely nothing apart from the quests which gives a sliver of gold. It takes a whole week to get a single pokemon, not to mention the upgrade system is just flat out stupid

sadly the limit you earn per week is not in tencent or Nintendo's control. it's due to china's (where tencent is obviously based) anti addiction law where they require game companies to put limiters to their games

There are vids on TH-cam of TH-camrs who actually did different comparisons like this. Like 20 compared to 30, because that's where it gets insane to level them up without buying. And the difference is crazy minimal. People complaining they are getting destroyed by a team only because of item level difference, need to practice more.
So me and several irl friends (and a ton of discord friends) all made it to Master without spending a single dollar on upgrade tokens. How strange for a p2w game, its almost like you can't buy actual skill and teamwork. Yeah, you can pay to get there faster and people will get thousands of tokens in 2 weeks, so everyone will be on equal terms soon enough.

This video, like many others at the moment, makes a lot of assumptions and errors in reasoning to overblow the effect of max level items as well as how difficult it is to actually get them f2p.
First, a level 20 item is like 90% as good as level 30 at a tiny fraction of the ticket cost. Upgrading to 30 is a bad idea if you aren't swimming in upgrades. He compares level 30 items to no items at all, when he should be comparing it to what free players can reasonably get in a few weeks of play. It should be 3 level 20 items vs 3 level 30, and that's almost no difference.
Second, item stats in general have almost no impact compared to player skill and team coordination. Yeah 3% more defense might win you a fight, but 100x less often than using your abilities with the right timing and correctly judging when and where to engage. Literally anything might win you 1 fight if your bar is this low; up to including your internet connection and size of your TV screen.
If you’re getting my completely destroyed, then I assure it’s not due to anyone having spent money to gain a 3% advantage over you.
Of course this is after the young crowd to get there parents to buy.

Reminds me of runes from LOL when it was beggining. It was very grindy, but at least achievable. Now you have luckily 3 max grade upgrades for new players, so it isn't that bad

Thank you! Only spent ten and only bought Pokémon and the battle pass. If you learn the matchups, Don't do dumb things, and have a good team, you can beat out p2w. It still helps to have, but still money can only do so much if you just stink at playing the game in general.
Yeah, I haven't spent a dime but have been having a bunch of fun playing. Have over 100 games and a winrate over 60% the worst part is teammates not knowing what to do. Although I'm sure if I get to a high enough rank I'll start to get frustrated about enemy heros needing 2 extra autos to die over me lvl 1.

If you want to save money level them to lvl 20 because lvl 30 is a waste and cost $30

The concept of coming in with items isn't that far-fetched considering these are only 10 minute rounds; just not enough time to farm and upgrade items on top of accumulating points to score. The problem is with the upgrade system altogether. Maybe instead of using points to permanently upgrade the items, they could've used a temporary upgrade system in-match, where the items you chose at start are base and passively get better as you level up, then reset at the next match
Thank you, I just started playing and was getting so confused that sometimes I could easily win a fight against a Pokémon but others against the same Pokémon in a different round they would curb stomp me despite me having an advantage and knowing I have easily won fights against that Pokémon before. It’s a shame I really just want a competitive game without lvl progression that makes a character stronger permanently. I understand a lvl progression that comes from playing but not from spending something
You can do missions and get three items to lvl 30 and 4 to 20 in a week Without paying you need one weeks patientnce and know laning

You need to take care about lvl difference. And a item lvl 20 is enough good to roam. I have now 20, 18, 15, in my items and i rock hyper league with no problem. Tomorrow i gona lvl up to next league 👍 and i have a win of 83% but maybe this is my experience from heroes of the storm. By the way i like more because of more lvl up skills in a different way ✌️

This game won’t die. It has the name Pokémon tied to it and every time people say no the game will die it didn’t. I mean Sword and shield people were not gonna buy and yet people bought it.
Then about the PAY 2 WIN thing. All the money does is give those players a boost for a limited time. I and a few other free players I know already have 3 items that are 20 are higher. It’s just a matter of how much you play. I mean if you don’t want to spend money or time then you can’t be made at people that have better items.

in fairness, this is always how the series has been...
In the cards, its a random draw for cards, so you have to gamble to get what you want, and in the games, you've pretty much always had to get a second game to finish your pokedex meaning you have to shell out a whole second price of the game to get all the content.
Perhaps but the biggest issue is using that mentality to MOBA's who never had these kinds of advantages. (Except for LOL but they have since removed it)

If it makes you guys feel better level 10 items are plenty enough to get to Master playing solo without an arranged team. The game is still pay to win tho, but it's far from the end of the world if you enjoy it.

It's been awhile since I've seen a practice of this system. Granted there r probs millions of games put out that're pay to win, but when it comes to bigger releases like this, I'd expect better.
It is somewhat similar to the old League of Legends' runes where you have to grind for gold to buy decent runes OR top up to buy full set of runes immediately. I guess pkmn unite is still grind-able but the climb in ranked game might be difficult.

I do remember some one defending this game. They comparing to level 20 to level 1 gear. But they didn't compare a level 30 gear to level 1 gear. I later find out damage they can do over times. Like crazy.

While I do agree this is a bit of an issue, I think people are exaggerating a bit. I am f2p and have been playing since day 1. I currently have a 69% win rate (nice) and my highest level item is level 13. Honestly Item composition is more important than item level.

It's nothing like that lol. Half of the items suck and aren't worth investing in. Another big chunk of the items that are good don't even improve that much from level 20 to level 30, and 20 isn't that hard to get an item to as a FTP player.

@@hyejin9136 honestly depending on how the match was going your teammates may have been making the right choice there. if you’re in the lead then it’s typically better to defend zapdos instead of attacking it to ensure the enemy don’t steal it. they could’ve been backing off to do exactly that

Okay, you have 500 days (around 16 months) to get 3 (JUST three) items to level 30. You chose to main Snorlax, and chose 3 specific items that would make it the greatest tank of all time. Those three items combined are not as useful to a Crustle, or a Slowbro, because reasons (This is just an example btw); and those two tanks have better sinergy with different items. But you're not interested on them anyway, you want to main Snorlax.
You don't want to spend a single penny on this game, which means you might be playing on a disadvantage every single day against people that paid to upgrade items. But you don't care, you're getting good at the game and you're motivated to keep going because you love the game.
After 500 days of grind, you finally made the last upgrade, and Tencent decided "hey, let's nerf Snorlax", and now your main becomes unviable. Alternatively, Tencent says "let's nerf one or two of the items that you particularly decided to upgrade", which means that 33% or 66% of your hard work is now pointless.
You have to start the grind all over again with a different pokemon or a different item, while the P2W users just say "oh well, let's spend some extra 40 bucks on another item and I'll get back to business".

A better idea would have the items level up with your pokemon ingame. I.E., the Natural leveling up stats for your pokemon being boosted by your items that level up with you.
I started to play this game in December and I refused to spend a dime on it. I have 5 itens on level 30 till now, but I don't seem to get as many coins/etc as before. I've had Pokemons that aren't that strong obliterate me and my teammates as if I don't have any itens and it's really annoying. Recently I've been a lot on the losing team to the point where I don't even wanna play ranked anymore
The second I hear Tencent my butt clenches so hard I could crack walnuts. That alone is enough for me to never touch this game lol.

I would like to know if the home country still has spending caps or not. A few years ago there was something going around about how the KR and Chinese game market kept shoveling localization MMOs and mobile games to the US because their home country had a spending cap but the USA didnt, allowing them to make quick bursts of cash grabs, because KR had something like a $200 spending limit per month. The math might be more interesting if those caps are still in place.
I haven't spend a single penny and I am in expert rank. I also leveled up almost all of my items to lvl 10 or more just with stuff the game gave me.
I agree, so far, they've been giving me so many freebies the whole 2 year argument makes no sense.
Up front, they shouldn't have let you pay to be able to spend on improving your characters performance. It's really the best money maker they have though, since they can easily release new items that are better than the ones there are now - so people will have to dip in again, and again, where as ouftis for your person or pokemon require more time and effort. That said, I'd be interesting to know the difference between level 30 and 20 and 10 in regards to stat bonuses.
There is no difference from level 20 and level 30. 30 is just where it is capped and you are not allowed to level anymore. 20 is the max for stat increases on items.

@SGArrinda The Held Items Passive gains it's maximum benefits at 20 while 21 to 30 increases the stats the item gives your Pokemon.
So for example Muscle Band grants your Pokemon 1/2/3% maximum HP damage on basic attacks and grants increased attack and attack speed. 21 to 30 will only increase the Attack and Attack Speed benefit. Stat differences are huge in MOBAs, so 30 is still desirable, but if you're F2P you should stop at Level 20 as that's the perfect power for your limited currency.
Can we talk about how the stats scale exponentially in leveling and linearly in items. The higher level the less impact the items already have.

@@mastaw The games are 10 minutes. Unlike other Mobas, there's not really any inherent benefit to killing champs. The games are heavily weighted towards getting Zapdos and snowballing the last 2 minutes. Spawn camping can be an issue, but that's map design, not a held item issue.
Doode items in this game are weak. I looked stats on net of pokemon and items and upgrading most of them beyond level 10 is pointless and beyond level 20 completely useless.Those stats make almoust no diference. Yea you can deal like 100 more damage on ability but ability that make 2500 damage defult is not notisible you will kill your oponent in 3 shots anyway. Items do not scale vith levels of pokemon unlike pokemon stats so they are strongest in first fight when you are like level 4. Then they if they are fuly ubgraded make you stong as if you are level 6/7. But that is onli first fight later in geme they make no diference in how many shots you cill your oponent. And cooldown and atak speed bufs, dude those are like 4.5% and 7.5% THAT IS NOTHING. If your ability have cooldown 9 s what do you think 4.5% will change? You dont spam abilities and those who you spam have cooldown resets like Gengar hex. And atak speed 7.5%, it is the same pokemon who have most bnefit from it is Cinderace, Greninja, Ninetails(becouse it pasif) and Zeraora. Others are ability oriented and tise pokemon get faaaaar biger atak speed buff from there abilities.

I mean to be fair he is right considering he would've died in the fight without boosted hp,defense and movement speed lol and without his goal they would have been behind by almost 100 points.

You totally missed the point genshin is rpg and most of the time it's single player . Where as Mona's are multiplayer and even giving a an extra edge makes the game imbalance

Do research it is not pay 2 win it is pay to flex because a lvl 20 item is fundamentally the same as a lvl 30 item but lvl 30 cost 5 time than lvl 20

A level 30 item is "fundamentally" 50% better than a level 20 item.. I've now done my research and confirmed it is objectively "pay to win".

absolutely nothing has changed in this game more than a year after its release
scummy monetization models, horrible matchmaking with no dedicated solo queues (get ready to pull your hair out in frustration when you get paired with newbies against pro players on comms), really unbalanced meta (they buff mons to sell their overpriced cosmetics), and other strange design choices that should not be in a pvp game
this game is definitely pay to win that can only be enjoyed with a group of friends, and anyone who says otherwise is a corporate shill

true, I play most MOBAs on smartphone (ML, AOV, MSW, Wild Rift), but this one has the most significant boost on pre-battle item effect. I hope Tencent adjust or totally remove the "held item" system. If there is any in app purchases in MOBA genre, it should be cosmetics only.
