This movie is SO underrated! This entire scene is a PERFECT introduction: it's got action, excitement BUT it's also got a lot of emotion. The way the mix the current race with the flashbacks explaining the story not just of Speed, but of the entire Racer family, is masterful. It actually makes you understand what the characters have gone through and makes you care for them. By the time the race is over, you're invested in what they're going through because now you know everything you need to know to understand what this race REALLY means to them. This movie has got A LOT of heart. The Wachowskis really did care about making a good product and it shows. People who think this movie is bad or dumb, or can't connect to the characters, are just blinded by the prejudice of "it looks so cartoony it's probably just another kids movie".
It’s based on a cartoon so I say the cartooniness works in its favor. If anything I think the movie wouldn’t be as good if it were more realistic and subdued.
I enjoy this scene very much, the drive he has to be the best driver in the world, yet at a moment when he could own the track record he instead pays his respects to his brother and lets it stand. I loved this movie beginning to end.
he should've beat the record. it was his one and only chance. besides, the idea that he would refuse to beat his brother's record seems to indicate that he wouldn't want anyone else to beat it either, so if someone else were able to beat the record just like how he was able to there, it seems that he would try to sabotage them beating the record.
Speed refuse to own the record because Rex's record is one of the only thing he got left, or Speed just wanted to race with his brother, if he break Rex's record Speed will be racing on the track without his brother's memory.

I guess you could say that speed beating his brothers record would mean that the only good thing about him that the public would remember is his race at thunderhead. But i first saw it differently. In the flashbacks rex leaves and joins a team. Soon, he does questionable moves. later, royalton reveals that racing is fixed. You realize then that rex knew this and tried to change things meaning take out other drivers or maybe ruin the reputation of the team he was on. When rex leaves, he tells speed "I hope you don't believe them". I always interpreted it as speed beating the record means he accepts what the media said and that rex was a dirty driver. At 4-4:05, he looks at the ghost and starts to think hard about it. sorry, if that's long and complicated, i just really love this movie.
I think the thing that is really interesting that I never fully noticed is how Rex Racer drove with rear 180 axis wheels and regular wheels on the front while everyone else drove on full 180 axis wheel sets. Rex had far more skill than any of his competitors. With only his brother who understood his Rex’s way of racing better than anyone coming close to matching even surpassing him.
if you look at renders of the mach 4 online you can even see how the front wheels don't have the swivel mechanism like the back wheels do. i never realized this. so freaking cool wtf
2:46 MY EYES!!!! There's so many colors in this shot I swear the film invented a few new ones haha. Plus his car is moving so fast at one point he's so close to actually coming off; they did such a beautiful job rendering the weight and physics of the car in this shot
I love how speed is chasing his brothers Racing line. Chasing Rex as you see for the turns nearing the end of the race. He gets close the his brothers shadow but doesn't touch it shows speed has excellent car control imaging if his brother was on the track with him, if Rex was not receiving death threats towards him, and his family. Rex and Speed would have been the fastest race team ever.
Man this was one of the best movies I watched as a kid behind the Herbie the Love Bug trilogy, man they need to make another film to revive its reputation after it was ruined by Fully Loaded

I 100% believe that all the safety stuff that happens in the movie is because of Rex. Whether it was the way he drove or his crash, cause I don’t think that he’d been able to fake his death as well as he did if the bubble stuff was a built in feature to every car.

@limebread he's using the mach 5, its more suited to the surface of this track, there's a video description of a number of the cars in the movie in the dvd extras. so he's driving the mach 5 here, the ghost of rex is driving the mach 4, and the mach 6 is used later on

Yea, if it is written that way. But in reality, let's say Speed got old and retired. And then some new driver came up and beat Rex's record. Then what? in the movie, speed stated that the quick save (the bubble at 1:21 ) was disconected. so, the reasons for the safety was before rex's "fatal" crash
