Great video, this is a piece of my childhood. I have both the PS2 and Wii versions. The PS2 version seemed to have more content, a few extra characters and even an extra location, but could only have a max of 12 racers. The PS1 game is also quite enjoyable, I’d recommend having a look at it, though it is quite limited in content. Looking forward to the next video!
Thank you thank you THANK YOU for reviewing this game! It’s one of my favorite games of all time, and seeing someone really take it apart and appreciate it just brings a massive, un-suppressable smile to my face! Imo, you hit the nail on the head with every single point, and even made me notice some things I hadn’t considered before! Also, shining some light on the soundtrack in addition to the game itself was a great move in my book - the OST has been a mainstay on my phone for years now! If I could criticize one thing - drifting DOES have a use - it sort of puts you “on rails” like in Zone Mode, so it’s useful for tight corners. You can steer left and right with the D-pad too. Also, to recover from an attack, I’ve found using a roundhouse/spin attack can reset your spinning momentum so you don’t have to fight it as much. The game never says that, and it feels a bit odd, so it’s probably a glitch. The torpedo can also be used to recover quickly, but it costs a boost. I have nowhere else to put this, but you uploaded the video a day before my birthday and it just showed up in my recommendations today. Awesome!
Finally someone talks about this game! I loved this game when I was a kid, it was one of the first games I completed to the 100%. And the movie is the best thing ever.
I loved this game growing up. Played for countless hours with my siblings and friends. I plan to go into the video game business, and one of my dreams is to make a new Speed Racer videogame for a new generation to enjoy. Thank you for covering this game.
The car designs are very interesting. One really reminds me of the 2022 F1 car concept with the simple front wing and these wings over the front wheels and another one reminds me of the current FE car with the bodywork over the front wheels and these sharp sidepods. When I saw these speedracer memes that youtube recommended to me for some reason, i did not think that this franchise has a modern movie and some games about it.
Wow, watching this was like opening a pandora box in my head. So many memories. I played it a lot, expecily becouse at the time I didn't speak english. Now it's common, but this was the first game I played that had a brazilian portuguese translation. My dad was a fan of the speed racer anime from the 60s, so I remember he trying to play this with me and being completely lost 😅 good memories
Maaaaan...seeing this game after YEARS of forgetting about it is nostalgic as heck. I always remembered the very bright neon colors during the boosts. They still look pretty cool.
i had both the wii and ds games and i loved them to death, basically this game was my child hood. I'd just wish someone would make some mods for the wii game and update the game a bit. If someone makes a fan made remake of this game then that would be awesome, i saw the movie and 60's show as a kid so this would be something that would make me remember and live my childhood again .
I used to have and play this as a kid because I was obsessed with cars and speed racer and transformers. My aunt would play with me and get pissed and swear at the game lolll
This actually makes me so mad. Speed Racer is one of my all-time favorite films, and every time I watched it as a kid, the DVD started with an ad for the PS2/Wii game, and I wanted it so badly, but I could never find it anywhere. Seeing it go here, I can tell that I would have absolutely loved it if I had it as a kid. Well, what are you gonna do? I mean, I still want it, so...
Pcsx2 on pc and download and iso for the game and you’ll be playing in about 5 minutes. It’s free and so so worth it. Literally just finished playing it
When this movie/game came out, we would go to the video rental store every week. For a solid month, I exclusively rented this game. I ADORE it. I see it all the time at my local used store and was afraid nostalgia glasses gave me the wrong impression. I've gotta pick it back up
There is in fact a LOT of cut content for this game, you can tell from the soundtracks. There was an entirely cut mode called "Rival Battle" and characters/tracks that were entirely cut from the Wii game, only implemented in the PS2 version, for example Sam Storm (character) and Skorost (track). I believe this was because of the financial failure of the reboot movie itself, WB cut back the funding on this game and released it in an unfinished state, which is a shame because the game could have been so much more.
Thank you for showing the world this. One my favorite ps2 games that I recently got back into. The soundtrack is amazingly composed and and Speed Racer is my favorite movie ever
Man, this makes me wanna watch the movie again. I feel bad dragging my dad to see the movie five times in theaters because I’m sure it must’ve just been a huge migraine for him with all the sensory overload lol. But I absolutely loved that movie growing up, as well as the old anime! The movie’s faithfulness to the westernized version of the source material is really incredible, and it’s just so much fun. This reminds me of an old Speed Racer browser fan game I used to play that’s probably way too simple now but was so much fun at the time because of the focus they put on the Mach 5’s car gadgets, like the jump jacks and the amphibian frog mode for underwater sections. I can’t tell you how awesome it would be to get a new Speed Racer game done right for modern consoles, especially if it included more life sim-style elements between races like somewhere between Sakura Wars and Persona. I’m actually not much for racing games in general, but I would play the absolute hell out of that!
Speed Racer on PS1 was my Favorite Game. This one wasn’t bad either but the PS1 had the Music for me. Plus its more Nostalgic for me since I was a fan of the 60’s Anime. I do think I’m the only one who like the 2008 movie!
This game was so magical as it was one of the first wii games I got and that feeling of swinging the remote from side to side to hit your brother at just the perfect time was beautiful. Mario but trippy.
YESS! Thank you so much for doing this set of games justice! I have been playing this game ever since it was released alongside the movie, and it is honestly my favorite videogame ever! The movie is also my favorite of all time, and both games capture the racing energy and feel that was in the movie perfectly! Whenever a game comes out that is based on another piece of media, it's very easy to say the games makes you "feel like you're in the universe of the movie/show/comic", but most of the time it's simply not true. ("feel like batman" lol) This game is the exception. I really feel entranced and apart of the film's universe when I play this game, it truly is a masterpiece of immersion and adaptation to the videogame format! For the Wii game, the visuals are absolutely incredible, and I find myself staring at the awe-inspiring location art and detail, along with the scale of the tracks and locations. They captured the movie-tracks in the videogame with a lot of precision, and I find myself squealing with glee when I drive around the same part that Speed drove in the movie, like the loops in Fuji! The audio side is another story, like you mentioned, the soundtrack is really great! The composer, Winifred Phillips, really blew my mind with the soundtrack. She had (and still has) tons of experience with making music for videogames, so it was no surprise the soundtrack was so good! I want to mention a couple of things that I want to share for those who are curious. The PS2 version of the game features an extra track set in a fiery landscape called "Skorost", which also has it's own music and visual style. The PS2 version also has an extra racer, the monkey from the movie/show, Chim-Chim! Funny enough, he has the best car in the game stats-wise! Recently, I spoke with the lead designer and producer for the game, and he said they were working on a PS3 version, but they had to cancel it shortly after the movie was released. He also mentioned that everything in the game was what they were aiming to add, so nothing was 'cut', except for the extra content that made it to the PS2 version. The reason why the DS and Wii versions of the game are so different is because they are made by completely different developers. I'm sure they probably communicated about some things, but it's very obvious each game was made by a different team during different times. Some of the cars have major differences, even from the movie, in the DS game! Currently, the way I pay the game is through a Wii emulator on PC called Dolphin. The program allows you to run the game at higher resolutions beyond what the Wii ran the game at. At 1080p and above, the game looks absolutely stunning! Everything becomes clearer and the visibility brings a new life into the game. I suggest playing it through the emulator because the scale becomes even bigger and the game is more immersive. Anyway, I could talk all day and night about Speed Racer: The Videogame! It's my favorite videogame ever, and I am so glad you made this video! Thank you!
Just spent the past couple days playing this in Dolphin. I'm blown away. Thank you for bringing this to my attention! I never knew how much I wanted this type of racer, and it's now one of my favorite Wii games.
I'm glad someone made a video about this game. This game has been in the back of my mind for years. I love this game. The music gets me hype everytime.
Always wanted to try both versions of these games, now I have even more reason to =D P.S. hearing minimme trying to pronounce Brazilian names just made my night
Thanks 4 reviewing this game. Saw ads for it years ago once. Didn't quite grab my attention due to there being lots of movie tie in games not having the best reputation in my opinion. Glad to see you had a good time with the Wii/PS2 versions. The car fu aspect sounds really fun.
They judged it as a regular movie and not as a Speed Racer movie. It kinda stinks as a standalone movie but it's a perfect representation of what makes Speed Racer so charming. It's very true to the original show, right down to the cheesy humor, ridiculous villains, and memorable graphics. The only difference is budget. The TV series had basically no budget while the movie was using groundbreaking CG. This movie is criminally underrated as-is. You're not watching it for the acting. You're watching it for the action and the fact it's a beautiful colorful homage to a classic anime.
Drifting was the best part, you can hold loads of speed through corners if u do it and then therefore the ai become ez as hell, unless u use the secret super hard ai
I always love watching your videos and discovering new stuff like this. I absolutely love games like these. Definitely going to try to get my hands on this one after watching this video. Thank you for the awesome content!
That ps1 speed racer game is super nostalgic to me, it was like Ridge Racer but with all the trick from the Mach 5, the sad thing is that it only has 1 race track
I rented this and it was the best movie tie in game I’ve played. I did find myself struggling in later races but it's because i spent too much time fighting mid pack than racing for first place. The heavy focus on melee combat while racing kinda reminds me of IGPX.

Probably the best live action anime ever
Man am I glad that you reviewed this. This game was so underrated! I loved this game as a kid and I still play it sometimes.
I player this a lot during my childhood, extremely underrated
*FINALLY MY CHILDHOOD GAME IS GETTING THE RECOGNITION IT DESERVES!!!!!*
I loved this game growing up. Played for countless hours with my siblings and friends. I plan to go into the video game business, and one of my dreams is to make a new Speed Racer videogame for a new generation to enjoy.
Thank you for covering this game.
I'd love to see a game like this for sure, right down to the colorfull art style.
Me: I wish there was a new *F-Zero* game.
My mom: _We have one at home._
F-Zero at home:
I see no problem here.
Maaaaan...seeing this game after YEARS of forgetting about it is nostalgic as heck.
I always remembered the very bright neon colors during the boosts. They still look pretty cool.
Rubberbanding is really noticeable, and it lacks different modes, but the best character is a monkey.
9/10 - Needs more monkeys
I grew up playing the ds game thanks for the nostalgia!
i had both the wii and ds games and i loved them to death, basically this game was my child hood. I'd just wish someone would make some mods for the wii game and update the game a bit. If someone makes a fan made remake of this game then that would be awesome, i saw the movie and 60's show as a kid so this would be something that would make me remember and live my childhood again .
loved this game as a child, still love it as an adult. good game
Honest to god thought I was the only one who played this growing up, glad to see I’m not alone :)
I'm so glad you make these videos.
Tmw when you have an actual Skillshare ad before the video's Skillshare ad
Literally just finished playing it
I was addicted to Speed Racer on the DS, had some really fun times with it because of the tricks and the crazy courses
Never cared for speedracer before now. This game looks rad
I think you're gonna love playing it!
If you still got a wii plz find a copy of this game
The BEST reviews! The passion makes these reviews so much more awesome. I get nostalgia from games I haven't even played. GREAT JOB!
My good man I can't believe you didn't mention that Chim-Chim (the monkey) was a playable racer in the PS2 version
When this movie/game came out, we would go to the video rental store every week. For a solid month, I exclusively rented this game. I ADORE it. I see it all the time at my local used store and was afraid nostalgia glasses gave me the wrong impression. I've gotta pick it back up
Now there's a game I put hours into way back when.
Nice video, I suggest trying XIII. A first person shooter based on the comic book of the same name.
Not the new one
@@TheRiverintheRoad Agreed, do not play the remake.
That ds version is awesome, i played this a lot when a child
Agreed
There is in fact a LOT of cut content for this game, you can tell from the soundtracks. There was an entirely cut mode called "Rival Battle" and characters/tracks that were entirely cut from the Wii game, only implemented in the PS2 version, for example Sam Storm (character) and Skorost (track).
I believe this was because of the financial failure of the reboot movie itself, WB cut back the funding on this game and released it in an unfinished state, which is a shame because the game could have been so much more.
The Wii version came out like this because it had to coincide with the release date of the movie, the PS2 and NDS version came out a little later.
This nostalgia is just what I needed right now, played the sh!t outta this game
Thank you for showing the world this. One my favorite ps2 games that I recently got back into. The soundtrack is amazingly composed and and Speed Racer is my favorite movie ever
Just searched up the soundtrack and it slaps
Fully agree
I’m actually not much for racing games in general, but I would play the absolute hell out of that!
the adobe flash game based on the show was really good
Adobe Flash™.
Speed Racer on PS1 was my Favorite Game. This one wasn’t bad either but the PS1 had the Music for me. Plus its more Nostalgic for me since I was a fan of the 60’s Anime. I do think I’m the only one who like the 2008 movie!
This reminds me of Hot Wheels Stunt Track Challenge in look and stunts and such. You should play it.
I honestly Watch the movie and played a game as a kid and I feel in love with the Speed racer franchise. I’m happy you made a video on this good work.
"I know car fu" -Neo
"Race me"-Morpheus
This game was so magical as it was one of the first wii games I got and that feeling of swinging the remote from side to side to hit your brother at just the perfect time was beautiful. Mario but trippy.
This show was way darker than I remember
Thank you!
That's awesome that you talked to people who worked on the game.
Just spent the past couple days playing this in Dolphin. I'm blown away. Thank you for bringing this to my attention! I never knew how much I wanted this type of racer, and it's now one of my favorite Wii games.
Finally someone is talking about this game
I playe the PS1 version back in the day, I was quite young though and would love to see a video on it!
I remember that Arcade game, obviously shaped like hid car!
I'm glad someone made a video about this game. This game has been in the back of my mind for years. I love this game. The music gets me hype everytime.
Always wanted to try both versions of these games, now I have even more reason to =D
P.S. hearing minimme trying to pronounce Brazilian names just made my night
Wow, that's impressive.
I actually did play this game though. Pretty cool.
YO! Got this as a kid and found it really hard. I really enjoyed it. You made me want to go back and 100% it. Super hyped for that!
The movie ain't that bad. I don't know that the fuck everyone's problem about the film itself
@@SockyNoob
If they don't like it, they don't have to watch it. I like the movie personally
@@ChaseMC215 How would they know they don't like it if they didn't watch it? Lol
@@pada443
They judged the film, that's why.
I’ve been playing this game religiously since 2012 THANK YOU for covering this!
ay nigga wassup
Drifting was the best part, you can hold loads of speed through corners if u do it and then therefore the ai become ez as hell, unless u use the secret super hard ai
I loved playing the ps2 version when I was a kid. I t was one of miy favorite games. Just downright fun
I have awaited this day for years. Soon, I will have all versions of the speed racers after I obtain the ps2 version. THEN I SHALL RULE THE WORLD!!!!
I always love watching your videos and discovering new stuff like this. I absolutely love games like these. Definitely going to try to get my hands on this one after watching this video. Thank you for the awesome content!
I played the NDS version back in the day, and what a brilliant surprise! I loved it!
Great video man! keep doing what you're doing
Bruv, you've recalled one of my fondest memory of this movie and the little car I get from Macca's Happy Meal
