The Non-Canon Expert looks at how the lightsaber combat form Anakin Skywalker would successfully utilize against Dooku in Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith was viewed and understood by some Jedi within the Order in the years prior to the Clone Wars, explaining their concerns over this lightsaber combat form, how it was understood by a powerful Sith Lord who also used it, and whether any of these elements were present during Anakin's final duel against Dooku.
This is a Legends story for Anakin Skywalker, the lightsaber combat forms, and the events of Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith with information found within The Jedi Path reference book, the Book of Sith reference book, "Star Wars: Jedi vs. Sith: The Essential Guide to the Force," "Star Wars: Darth Bane: Path of Destruction," and the Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith novelization. I hope that you enjoy it!

Truth be told, he didn't really have a choice but to use overwhelming force to crush Dooku. Obi-Wan had lost (again) and was incapacitated, worse yet Grievous was on board and could have entered the fight at any moment.
Time wasn't on Annikan's side so he had to make the call, he chose what was needed over what held to the Jedi ways.

WELL in all fairness, also in novelization of ROTS, Dooku feared Obi-wan’s lightsaber skills because he wasn’t losing his footing in form 3 against Dooku at all even though he should’ve been insta-wrecking Obi. Which is why he force spammed until Obi lost the fight. In a saber duel alone? Obi probably would’ve won in episode 3 considering how proficient he’d become during the clone wars, as well as his ability to utilize some form 4 techniques during a duel to temporarily gain an advantage.

    • @Slender_Man_186
      @Slender_Man_186 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

GokuInfintysaiyan Obi Wan still would’ve lost. Dooku gave Grevious this advice “don’t cut through his guard, cut around it.” That’s why Anakin and Grevious lost, both we’re trying to push an immovable object, although Anakin was closer than Grevious to being an unstoppable force. Dooku didn’t need to be an unstoppable force, and was well versed in all forms of saber combat unlike Anakin, and taught Grevious.

Djem So and Shien were both developed from Soresu practitioners who felt that Soresu was too passive a form to be used in combat. All you'd be doing with Soresu is buying time.
Anakin was always the kind of Jedi who would end a threat quickly after defending. He wasn't the kind to just let a threat persist. The only problem was that he didn't couple it with compassion, but focused more on the dominating aspect of it. His son, Luke, used this form against his father in Return of the Jedi. But he eventually learned that Form V needed compassion coupled with its offensive capabilities in order for it to be effective. At least for Jedi, anyway.

A compassionate order would apologize for their mistake, completely own up to it and not try and justify themselves even when they had no idea what was going on, thats the correct and empathetic/compassionate thing to do. If they had compassion they wouldn't publicly shame, condemn and dismiss Anakin when he first came to the temple immediately after leaving his mother behind when his whole existence had been slavery with her and Shmi did everything she could to allow him to have some peace and joy even in SLAVERY. Of course he has fear and yet they treat him like it's an unwarranted reaction when they present themselves in a scary manner and hes been through scary circumstances. I have to disagree with you about Form 5 being wrong for Anakin. In fact its the only one that fits. He doesn't have the mentality for form 2 or 3 and form 7 is too dangerous because of his mentality. Form 6 Niiman is for Jedi who don't prefer lightsaber combat which we all know Anakin does. Also Shii-cho form 1 while it can be used at a high level doesn't really use Anakin's physical strength to its full effect. That would just leave Ataru which may work for him bit has some serious flaws in it as shown in episode 1. Ultimately in my opinion I think Djem-so is the best fit for Anakin because it uses Anakin's physical strength while also having a defensive framework built into it.

Haha, funny fact. Darth Zannah (bane's pupil) studied "Soreso" because bane said it would suit best to her. The most defensive form 😂
This form's are technique like forms of fighting. Broken down movements. Not ideas. You can take the idea of djem so and apply it to soresu. Fight defensively, tire you opponent and crush him if the time comes. Which it basically is per normal. The only difference..obi wan would wound you and zannah just cuts your head off because you breath her air.

And yet Dessel (bane) teaches Darth zannah his apprentice form 3 of all things. Its about body type for styles. A man of Bane's RAW PHYSICAL POWER form 5/7 is an utter no brainer for a slight petite woman like Darth zannah form 3 focused on total deflection is needed. On Darth Bane so context before he is noted as force sensitive he mined cortosis in mines for over a decade so bane made most beefcakes look like a toothpick! Ani was by no means beefy so he could use other forms rather well (minus 4) yet his mentality was a form 5/7 user since his fight with dooku. This was a big red flag to anyone in the order past that. Yet four reasons he wasn't dropped for his aggressive ways.
    1. His master is a council member.
    2. He's politically connected with two nabooians Padme, and the supreme chancellor.
    3. He's the chosen one so they just follow that kinda blindly
    4. The second they dumped him the sith would be all over him like bantha.
    Bonus
    5. It's not like he wouldn't keep doing what he was doing anyways so they kept him to restrain him.

I would say either form 6 or form 7. Form 6 because it was the jack of all trades form and had no particular strengths or weaknesses and it would allow him to focus on developing his force abilities and would perhaps draw him closer to reaching his full potential. I would say form 7 because he would use his dark emotions in combat but it would either turn him to the dark side earlier or, like Mace he would master the form and have control over his emotions but still be extremely powerful. But sadly he was banned from using it

Plus he can be very aggressive in some instances, Form 6 is for Jedi who pick up their saber as a last resort. Form 7 or possibly even Form 4 would be a better match for Anakin if he had picked different from Form 5.

Palpatine actually instructed Dooku to dispose of Kenobi and go easy on Anakin and let him win. Dooku didn’t know that Palpatine was going to actually let Anakin go through with killing him, but he went easy on him in the fight because his master instructed him to. I’m not sure what he thought his master’s plan was one Anakin had Dooku disarmed, but he apparently had enough faith in his master that he didn’t expect him to allow him to go through with murdering him. Either that, or he was so loyal and invested, that he was blinded or chose not to follow that train of thought. If you watch his face closely, he is completely stoic after losing the fight until the moment Palps says “KILL HIM...DEW IT” and then the shock and pain of betrayal are clear in his final moment.
I think I saw this on one of Lore Master’s videos, and I think it was in the ROTS novelization as well. It really is an important factor that I wish they would have included in the movie. The original script also had Dooku begging Palpatine to get Anakin to spare him and essentially let the proverbial cat out of the bag regarding Palpatine’s true identity, but Christoper Lee argued strongly against it, as he thought it went against his character’s graceful, aristocratic personality. It’s interesting stuff...the first time I watched that scene after learning about all this, I had a whole new appreciation for Dooku.

What makes lightsaber duels so amazing is that it is two people who both can sense the other’s actions. This is why Palpatine was so good. He was able to hide his power from others.
And as they grow in the force they are able to better overcome a weaker opponent. In theory, two people like Yoda and Palpatine could duel forever. And hats off to Yoda if he were unable to truely sense Sidious.
Had they explained this better it could explain Rey’s abilities. She would have had to have been the most powerful Jedi to have ever lived to be as good as she was w no training, and Finn wasn’t force sensitive but somehow dueled a fully trained Sith, but at least it would help explain a tiny fraction of the absurdity that was TFA.

I've never really understood the forms. Perhaps it derives from my own experiences in martial arts - but while a style or form may have its own characteristics, most styles and forms have a means by which to accomplish the same feat. This might only be exempted in the case of some more specific styles of martial arts - such as tai kwon do, which one would rarely use exclusively in real combat scenarios, the form exists as a disciplinary constraint for instruction and grading your feats of ... Feet. If you get into fisticuffs with a tai kwon do master, he may very well move right into a grapple or strike favored by hap ki do because it works and fits the situation.
We could consider this similarly with regard to the various styles of blade combat, which typically revolved around the shape/make of the weapon and the armor typical of the period. Something like a lightsaber can easily move from a fencing style to full on claymore and back into a flowing strike of a katana. In theory the blades are much lighter and thus mimicking overly large blades would seem to offer little benefit - but the whole idea is that a weapon style evolves out of the properties of a weapon and/or the manner in which it is employed on the battlefield - squad based combat being different from dueling, in particular with spears.
So I've never particularly understood how one would completely define a form in light saber duels, or why anyone of a practical mindset would actually practice a distinct form when actually fighting a war. Perhaps I am preaching to the choir when I say this - but it seems patently absurd that an order who is supposed to be willing to sacrifice their friends for the proverbial greater good would choose to lose a war over something as pithy as the way in which the glowstick of death was swung around.
Perhaps I just pointed out why anakin went absolutely bonkers, the force selected for both the jedi and the sith to be destroyed, etc, etc.
Like ... All the guy wanted to do was protect his mom, his princess-queeb-cougar, and make the world a better place. The jedi told him all of that was bad and he needed to let go of worldly attachment... And yet they were surprisingly unwilling to let themselves be removed from the world which did not matter. Space gaslighting, I tell you.

Plus, Djem So is rooted in a defensive foundation to allow for the fencing beta parties and counters, whereas Ataru is all-offense with occasional parries, physical strikes, and acrobatics. So, let me think about that: Form V was unexaptable for some members of the order, because it's too aggressive? What about Ataru? Judging Djem So for beeing too aggressive while allowing Ataru to become one if not the most popular form in the order is hypocricy. It's ridicolous. Atarus alternative name IS "the aggression form" which makes any debate regarding aggression obsolete. And don't make me start about Juyo. It's sole purpose is to violently kill or at least dismember your opponent in an "controled" berserker rage. It brings aggression and violence to a new level.
If someone studies Form V and is able to master both variants he or she is prepared for almost every situation. In order to protect someone or something you have be able to protect yourself, because if you're dead you can protect nothing. Defense alone is not enough. Sometimes you have to kick someones ass or cut his hand of to stop him from harming innocents. Effective selfdefense is not simply to block everything. It's defending against AND neutralize your opponent(s).
Are battle droids reasonable enough to negotiate? Are pirats whilling to turn their back to piracy, murder or their live of crime in general? Are terrorist willing to stop because you ask them nicely? Don't get me wong peacefull solutions are the best way to go. But sometimes you have to fight in order to survive otherwise you're only delaying the inevitable.
Soresu's defense alone wins no fight. That's the reason Ataru AND Shien/Djem So were created in the first place.

The Jedi at times were their own worst enemies, they were to rigid and followed a misguided ideology.

People acting like you have total control of how you take out an opponent that isn’t how sword fighting works. Force or no force, you see an opening and take it. Extending a duel because taking off someone’s hand is unethical is suicidal.

Cant you still use the Force without your hands? I find it weird that you couldn't

Dooku was using his saber dual handed at that time so both of them were weapon hands. Which makes it completely ethical and appropriate to the jedi code.

So djem so is a combination on form 3 defense, form 2 emphasis on lightsaber combat, and form ones problems of pushing towards the dark side.

So if I'm getting correct Djem So/Shien, is like Juyo/Vapaad but more aggressive.

Its weird how they forgot Anakin cut off both of Dooku's hands in the comic we keep seeing in this video

That is what in jedi order stupid, i trained in historical saber and we were required to learn to fence with weaker hand to nearly the same extent as with the stronger hand, because when main hand is injured you can fight with the other hand, and that is why i think that anakin's decision to remove both dooku's hands to be exactly on point. Sorry for language i am not a native speaker.

Also, total pet peeve: it’s not the Clone War. It’s the Clone Wars. It’s not Star Wars: The Clone War, it’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I get that it was a war, but on a galactic scale with multiple fronts, it’s plural.

Out of all of the jedi that wanted Anakin to chill out and not be so aggressive , how many of them actually ever fought a Sith much less actually killed one .
Anakin killed more Sith than Yoda or Windu .
As a matter of fact NO jedi ( at the time of the clone wars ) EVER killed a Sith Lord except Anakin .
