In regards to the character ages, Nick is the oldest, his birthday is Sept. 4th, 2005. Next is Darcy (Jan. 9th, 2006), Tori (April 4th, 2006), Elle (May 4th, 2006), Tara (July 3rd, 2006), Tao (Sept. 23rd, 2006), Isaac (Exact date isn't specified, but he was born in late 2006), and Charlie is the youngest, his birthday is April 27th, 2007). As for the actors, Corrina Brown (Tara) is the oldest at 23-24, and Kit Connor and Toby Donovan (Nick and Isaac) are the youngest at 20. Joe Locke (Charlie) just turned 21 last month, a few days after Agatha All Along premiered.

According to Alice Oseman's (book 5 end) Osmanverse Timeline, Heartstopper does not take place in a specific real year. Also, no birth years were given for the characters -- only birth DATES.
According to book 4 and 5, we are told that book 5 ends in June after the Fete. Everybody's school year is numbered according to the school year that starts in season 3.
When we meet Charlie in season 1, it is January of the school year; Nick had his birthday at the beginning of the school year in September (Sept. 4th). So that January in season 1, Nick was 16.
In the same school year, Charlie was 14 in January but turned 15 April 27.
      *** ***
According to book 4, the ages and birthdates for the characters who are Year 12s in season 3 are:
      Nick, September 4, age 17
      Tori, April 5, age 16
      Elle, May 4, age 16
      Tara, July 3, Age 16
      Darcy, January 9, Age 17
      *** ***
The birthdates and ages of the characters who are Year 11s in season 3 are:
      Charlie, April 27, Age 15
      Tau, September 23, Age 16
[Aled in the books, August 15, age 15 --- Isaac takes Aled's place in the TV show, so maybe his birthdate and age are the same?]

16:00 Yes, these characters are remarkably aware of and articulate about their feelings for their age. But I think that idealization is intentional for its intended primary audience of kids at this age-to model those ways of talking and thinking about those things. But it’s done with such a light touch that it doesn’t seem like those instructional films about dating and socializing for teens from the 1950s. It is drama with bright and emotionally aware characters in real situations that people experience at this age in n life. Even though I’m much older than you guys, it sucks me in and reminds me of the fears, foibles and emotional obsession ls i went through as a gay teen in the 1970s, when wanted to be a writer and the public library was my internet.

Charlie ate in season 1 when they went out for milkshakes before the school music concert and then again when he and Nick went to the beach for a date the last episode of season 1 they had fish and chips.

Thank you @MilesMilesCrocodiles!!! You are correct, I completely forgot about those times… 😅
I think the memory that comes to mind most for me when thinking about Charlie and food, is the time when he’s standing in the kitchen and pushing his cereal around the bowl with his spoon 🤔💭🥣 -GV (Alex)

Yep, I def remember that scene also back in episode 1. It was a big flashing red light moment for anyone who has been there but so easily missed by anyone who hasn’t. I think noticing that was why the moment he DID eat fish and chips at the beach stood out so much more to me.

15:00 Seasons 1 and 2 take place from January of XXXX to the very beginning of July XXXX (understood to be a "floating present" that, for the show unlike the graphic novels, isn't tied down to a particular calendar year), as Charlie's phone notes it as being just after midnight going into July 3rd (on a time-displaced late Friday night/early Saturday morning) when he debates on texting Nick. The current season covers the rest of that summer and across the next school year towards the latter end of Spring (meaning the 3 seasons narratively cover almost a year and a half, though IRL it's been two and half years since S-1 dropped in the spring of '22).
19:35 -- Absolutely. Part of the misunderstanding (particularly in recent decades/centuries, vs in antiquity) about sexuality and romanticism stems from the general public not understanding that although for the majority of people there is no dissonance between sexual attraction vs romantic attraction (the two things are intertwined/in-sync), a very significant minority -- more than many likely realize -- have varying degrees of each of those aspects in different ways. I have known *so many* people, particularly younger men, who are sexually bi-curious or bisexual but suppress it because the difference between sexual attraction and romantic attraction can be two different things. (I myself am essentially bisexual-leaning-gay, but am aromantic-to-demiromantic in terms of interpersonal attraction to individuals: I don't have a romantic attraction in general, or a very weak one, vs sexual attraction.) It sounds confusing to many people but is actually simpler than it sounds when you disentangle the two things and realize they aren't necessarily the same.

At this point Charlie, Tao, and Isaac are 15, Nick is 16 just coming up to his 17th birthday. Elle, Tara, and Darcy are also 16. I'm not sure how old Imogen and Sahar are.
The sixth form Tara mentions is basically a 2 year pre-university course in 3 or 4 subjects which they may do at the same school as their secondary education (as Nick, Tara and Darcy are doing) or which they may transfer to a more specialised institution for, which is what Elle is doing.
When I was that age the terms asexual and aromantic weren't used in that sense but we certainly knew of people who had no interest in or desire for sex and/or romance even if we didn't see it as an identity.

6th form is 2 years not 1. So Nick would be a junior if he was American along with most of the friend group (and Tori I think). Charlie would be a sophomore (Tao & Issac too)

The fans of the books were looking forward to The Shower Scene.
It's in book 4 and is very comically illustrated.
Fans have long been telling Alice that it was one of their favorite scenes,
so she included it in the TV show.
(People who had not read the book found the "confession through the door" puzzling.)

28:41 I think you’re partly right about why Isaac reads, but I think there’s another element to it, as well.
He already long ago realized that his emotional reaction to things was different from that of his friends and what he saw depicted as the norm on TV and in movies.
He already feels some disconnection from the world and he’s trying to understand it. And books more than almost any other communication medium can be a window into the interior life of the mind and emotions of another person.
Dramas-whether stage or TV or movies-depict the behaviors of the characters and when done well let you intuit and perhaps even identify them other those behaviors and actions and what might be motivating them. But apart from the sort of Shakespearean monologue that is increasingly rare in modern drama (the last show I can remember that deployed them frequently and effectively was Deadwood, where Al Swearingen would muse about the going’s on in town while sitting in his office receiving a blowjob), it doesn’t have the sort of interior monologue of the character ls often deployed in fiction and book-length essays.
And if, like Isaac, you already sense that you are outside, that you don’t experience the world in the same way as your friends and peers, books can be a kind of research. I think that’s what Isaac was trying to get at in his discussion with James in the bookshop late in season 2.
That was one element of my reading at that age. For me it was being gay in a time and place where that was made invisible. “That Certain Summer” aired just as I was entering high school, but I didn’t see it and no one around me talked about it, and shows weren’t constantly available on streaming then. Home VHS video tape players weren’t even a thing til I was leaving high school. So books were the only place I could find it if I searched for it (thank you, Samuel R. Delany).

I adore watching you both and getting your opinions! My partner is a veteran and we often have these conversations watching with him being straight and me being bisexual. We are polyamorous and definitely have a unique relationship style. I love your discussion about Isaac being asexual/aromantic. Was this a harder concept to understand for you than the traditional gay/straight/bi sexualities? Are you familiar with other sexualities similar to this: e.g. demisexual, greysexual, etc?

    • @GVSV-Media
      @GVSV-Media  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@@SarahJaneB it wasn’t a harder concept to understand, but it did really pique my interest around the biology of love, and being, at my core, a romantic, it was definitely difficult to relate to. I’m absolutely aware that there is a plethora of identities and relationship styles, but this discussion around our boy Issac has really made me think of love in a clinical way, but not a cold way. As I’m sure you and your partner being poly have had endless conversations about the very nature of love with each other and in explaining polyamory to folks not in the know lol. - SV

  • @garyprime6983
    @garyprime6983 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

You two have a good conversation in the middle about relationships and the differences of sexuality and good questions were asked. But kind of what Alex eluded to was that these things existed when you two were in high school but it just wasn’t talked about or had a widely discussed label.
Some behaviors can reflect Aromantic characteristics. For instance, a playboy bachelor might enjoy casual relationships without wanting a committed partnership. While societal pressures may lead him to marry and start a family, he could end up cheating or feeling dissatisfied in his marriage due to discomfort with the relationship aspect. Alternatively, he might have a successful marriage but occasionally disengage emotionally.
When examining history through the lens of diverse sexualities and romantic preferences, it becomes clear that many men experience similar patterns. For example, straight married men often complain about their marriages, expressing dissatisfaction with the relationship aspect while still valuing the physical side. This could indicate a heterosexual Aromantic tendency, but since such discussions are rare, many people may not recognize these traits in themselves. There are also examples in history for transgender individuals that date far back but cultural norms and attitudes toward the people limit the visibility of these groups.

I think I'm about your age, and I have learned so much from this show. Bisexual was a thing (including romantically) when I was a teen where I lived, but I lived in a city known for being queer forward, and was in a pretty progressive friend group, made up of mainly girls but didn't know about ace stuff, and I knew trans people existed, and was of course cool, with it, but didn't know a lot about it. From watching this show, I realized I'm probably demi. I need an emotional connection to someone to feel physically attracted to them.

Lmaooo Carl is me wondering what the voodo magic behind attraction is. Is it how the chemicals mix? The structure of the brain? A combo? Something we haven’t discovered yet?! Then I go off and wonder, do we want to know? If we know the “cause” wouldn’t that inevitably lead to someone creating a “cure”? What if we find it out and now they can screen for it during pregnancy? Its interesting and scary
