Yes, there are scars on both Charlie’s biceps, guys. It is quite deliberately evident, as it’s a plot theme for the last episode.
Alex, I agree Men are easier. 😂😂
I didn't catch on at first, but I think every time Charlie says something like "I didn't mean to" or "It was an accident", that means a self-harm incident. At Jack Maddox's talk, I think Nick is dealing with too many emotions. He has no idea what's going on (his baffled expression as he looks round at the rest of the audience laughing at the Mesopotamian joke), but he is so proud of Charlie who is obviously in his element and doing well. And then he gets all flustered when he's up close with Jack Maddox. I think Isaac is just curious and trying to understand something that is obviously so important to his friends.
I think Alice Oseman wrote the Elle radio plot line for and with the actor Yasmin Finney after she herself had had experiences like that after season 1 and 2 dropped. The art Yasmin expected to talk about was acting in Heartstopper. She expected questions about being a trans actor and representation. What she didn’t expect was being dragged into the deep end of the culture wars and political debate coming out of the USA and infecting everywhere through the ubiquity of the internet. She felt not only a lot of pressure, but a feeling of being thrust into the role of the number one representative of trans women on Earth through the worldwide reach and popularity of Heartstopper. I don’t know if that last perception is true, but she has been made to feel like it’s true. Yasmin Finney. Most famous trans woman on the planet. At such a young age :/ I can explain Isaac! TL;DR explanation: Isaac treats romance and sex like a scientist explores a culture or creature he is fascinated by but isn’t part of. The intellectually curious want to know a bit about everything, especially if we don’t understand it automatically ourselves because we don’t feel it or experience it ourselves. I DID not understand how DD/lg (Daddy Dom/little Girl) was not p*philia role play as everyone in BDSM insisted. So I read posts by “little girls” as I came across them and came to this understanding: some women with a lot of big responsibilities crave regular time outs when they have no adult responsibilities whatsoever. Roleplaying a young girl literally playing colouring in, board games, child-like decorating, being fed child-like meals etc changes their brains for the duration so all responsibility drops out for the duration of play time. It’s also a way to drop into a long duration Moving Meditation state of Mindfulness; being fully in the present instead of angsting about the past or stressing about the future. There. I have NO personal experience being or feeling like a “little girl” submissive role player. But I can have conversations about it and explain the impulses others have feeling it. It’s an incredibly relaxing, freeing feeling to be in “little girl” playtime. James sometimes makes Isaac uncomfortable in the way a gay guy feels uncomfortable when he knows a straight woman is crushing/in love with him, but restraining herself for the sake of friendship. But Isaac is a guy who feels a lot of compersion. He is made enthusiastically happy when fictional characters or his friends feel happiness from romantic and/or sexual happiness. There’s also possibly an intellectual kick in being able to explain their behaviour in the way a biologist can explain his favorite animals (given the biologist respects his animals as much as he respects humans). While I believe many people are fluid, it doesn’t necessarily apply to Isaac being aro/ace. TW self harm, su*cide (don’t know if TH-cam automatically bans comments with su!cide in) With scar marks, while there have been scenes where some pale scar prosthetics have been applied to Joe Locke (visible on a big screen/high definition TV) the show has tread a very fine line in the way it discusses and shows it. Other scenes showing Charlie’s arms don’t show scars. While mental health absolutely needs representation and open public discussion, science shows again and again that Open Season news stories, discussion and depiction of self harm and su!cide trigger those actions in many of the vulnerable. This is why Trigger Warnings are such a freeing blessing. When you know you’re vulnerable, and in a vulnerable emotional state instead of a strong state, the TW lets you stay away, while everyone else gets to have all the benefits of open depictions and discussions. I can’t remember if you noticed Charlie saying “sometimes I think everyone would be better off if I didn’t exist” as an indication that Charlie has su*cidal ideation, perhaps even frequent su!cidal ideation. That’s the only clue a show like this will give to viewers about that type of ongoing mental fight.
It’s England. Drinking age is 18, so they’re not all “that” underage.
They can drink in the home from age 5; Can drink beer and wine at a restaurant with a meal at age 16; Can buy and drink alcohol at a bar at age 18. (Some people may be calling it underage drinking because in the US the drinking age in some states may be higher) I live in California, where the drinking age has been a flat 21 since 1933.)
At one point, during Charlie's birthday party (in the kitchen), Nick says that it was true that he was not ready for sex in Paris, but that was "a long time ago." One reactor seemed to think it was not that long ago. So I checked the time frames. The Paris trip took place in the beginning of June right after the GCSE exams. Charlie's birthday party is April 27th So there were about 10 months between the Paris conversation (2x6) and this conversation (3x6). (It was *almost* a year ago, then.) Oh, yeah, someone was talking about how long the 2 guys had been together... They met the first week of January in Nick's Year 11, Charlie's Year 10. They were 'best friends' from then until mid-April, when their first kiss happens. A lot of people mark the beginning of their new, Romantic relationship on Charlie's birthday, which was April 27, when he turned 15. If we go with that, they have been in a romantic relationship for a year. They have been in one relationship or another for 16 months.
Because of the whole 'drinking age' discussion here (and the "they shouldn't be having sex this young" discussion on other Reactors' pages , in response to a couple of Season 3 videos) ---- I tapped into my "inner Nick" 🤣 , and looked stuff up. Some age trivia: In the UK --- ** Children aged 5 or older can have an alcoholic drink at home or in any private house ** Age 14 >>> >>> Can go to a pub but can't buy or drink alcohol. ** Age 16 The young person is allocated a National Insurance number. They can: >>> >>> Drink wine, beer or cider with a meal in a restaurant. >>> >>> Legally have consensual sex. Get married with parent’s permission. In Scotland they can marry without parent’s permission. Get a licence to drive a moped. Claim benefits in some circumstances. Open a bank account without parent’s permission. Get a full-time job. The NSPCC recommends 16 as the minimum age for babysitting. Join the Army with parent’s consent. ** Age 17 >>> >>> They can apply for a driving licence to drive a car. (We saw Nick taking driving lessons while Charlie was at the clinic) ** Age 18 Vote in elections Buy tobacco and cigarettes Get a tattoo or body piercing Watch an 18 film or play an 18 computer game >>> >>> Buy and drink alcohol in a bar Get married, enter a civil partnership, or live together without parental consent Stand as an MP or a local Councillor *** *** *** *** So ... About Drinking in the show -- *** When they were in Paris, at Tara's birthday party (Truth/Dare episode), Charlie, Tao, and Isaac were 15; the rest of the gang 16. Darcy gave Nick and Charlie some Vodka. Charlie had never had alcohol before, took a sip and was disgusted by it, and stopped. Nick, according to one of the books, had been allowed to drink one beer at Christmas AT HOME. He took a sip of the vodka and hated it, so stopped. *** At the New Year's party, Tao (now 16) sipped a drink and hated it, stopped; Elle had had a small amount of something but turned down a second drink because she knew she'd get sick; I did not see Nick drink (he was driving). I also did not see Charlie drink. *** As of Charlie's 16th Birthday Party, everyone there was 16 or 17 years old. They were also at a private house, so drinking was legal for them. Nick seemed to be limiting the quantity of whatever he drank (pouring it into a cup, rather than slugging it down from a bottle); also, he seemed to be drinking orange soda more often. At the beginning of the party, Charlie had not had anything to drink; Sahar gave him a cup of some disgusting mixture of "everything", and they had not tasted it before the conversation about whether Charlie would be Sahar's drummer. They each took one swig and stopped. When Elle cautioned Tara about how much (or what kind of alcohol) she drank, Tara said something about wanting to take the day off. (I took it to mean that she was 'over-worked/stressed' and wanted a respite.) The party went on all day; I'm not sure how many drinks people had throughout the day. (or whether they also had water and/or soda) When Charlie helped Tara through her panic attack, he finished up by orienting her (You're at my house, we've had a few drinks...) Afterwards, Charlie informs Nick that he was very drunk. In the kitchen, Nick was getting himself water. He hinted to Charlie that Charlie had 'enough' to drink. He gave Charlie water, also. When Charlie suggested they go upstairs (to have sex), Nick turned him down, telling Charlie that he was incredibly drunk. A bit later, Charlie ran off to puke. *** The day after the party/sleepover, we saw that Tara was hung over and ran off to puke. Darcy seemed sober. Nick seemed pretty much sober. Charlie felt ill but didn't seem to want to puke. He was fuzzy-headed as far as memories, though. *** We don't know when everybody woke up after the party. But it wasn't until late afternoon (about 4pm) that Elle's radio interview and Nick & Charlie's talk/booksigning began. >>> >>> (I don't know what the normal time is for getting over the inebriation of the night before.) [I remember going out to a pub, having a pint of beer and dancing a lot -- getting home a bit after midnight and sleeping until about noonish. I was able to function at that point, but my head felt like it was full of 'burnt toast'. I learned from somewhere that if I took B + C vitamin combos and drank a lot of water before bed, the 'day after' was not as bad. But I did not drink alcohol as a teenager (lack of interest), I waited until I was in my mid-20s. [In my 30s, I stopped completely when/before I decided to have a baby]] *** *** *** *** Spoilers for the book Nick and Charlie: Alex suggested that Charlie had drinking problems later on (maybe he got that from the book Nick and Charlie?) In that book, Charlie did get incredibly drunk at one party in response to feelings of abandonment the summer before Nick was to go away to UNI. While drunk, he started a huge fight with Nick . (Nick was sober; he was driving) [It was implied in the book that Charlie's getting drunk was a very rare occurence, though.] That event caused probably their first big fight ever. They were 'broken up' for 2 weeks. Never during that 2 week period did Charlie drink any alcohol. (I bring up this last point because I come from a family (of a few generations) of alcoholics. When they go 'on one' the drinking is on-going for a long period time. They would have continued drinking for the 2 weeks. So I separated Charlie's "once at a party" after HS Year 12, from this other drinking behavior -- While not a good way to allow yourself to finally "show negative emotions"; it did not seem to be habitual. UNLESS Charlie replaced cutting his arms with the occasional drinking binge? ) 🩷💜💙
That was SO informative and thorough
@@slm_766 Well done! Thank you so much. 🙂💙💛 This was extremely informative. I knew some of it from watching tons of British TV and films, but definitely not everything.
When it comes to Isaac there’s so many different ways to be Asexual, Alice’s book Loveless explores asexuality and aromanticism and I fully recommend it. Alice is aroace as well so it draws from her experience at her university (also Loveless will give you some insight in to how university life differs over here in the UK) Oh yeah the whole you’re X so you must do/like/know all of X, I’m a trans man and everyone assumes I know every trans person ever and the first time it happened the trans woman they were asking if I knew was my actual neighbour 😂
18:00 for whatever reason, a lot of ace people are really into romance fiction. Sometimes even the hardcore smutty stuff. It’s not my vibe but I’ve interacted with enough other ace people online to know it’s a thing. Many ace people watch pr0n, too. It’s complicated. So for an aroace guy to be curious about other people’s love lives isn’t really too unusual. edit: also, it’s a spectrum. While some people are 100% aro/ace, there is a big, broad gray area. And it definitely can fluctuate over your lifetime. And yeah, drinking culture in the UK is a lot different than in the US.
yeah! plus, when isaac was uncomfortable with the PDA in season 2, he didn’t like it because he felt the expectation to be like that with James when he didn’t feel that way. when it comes to books and his friends, he’s just happy to see other people happy, so he isn’t totally disinterested in love and sex when it comes to a fun narrative or seeing your friends be fulfilled
I've noticed that the scars seem to show up more on some monitors than on others.
actually in GB if you are in a private residence anyone over 5 ( yes, 5 ) can have alcohol. To buy, sell or drink in public the age is 18. I see these same sort of comments by Americans about drinking an sex because most Americans assume the rest of the world lives by our rules. They don't; we have one the most stringent ages of consent about both alcohol and sex.
No Alex, tell us more about how men are easier than women. I am dying to hear more 😂😂😂😂😂
We don't actually know that Charlie will have problems with alcohol later. The drinking seems pretty normal for a teenage party in Europe, to be honest. It's not like it happens every day.
@sandramatras8345 yeah. I think people in the US get more hung up about young people drinking. The Nick and Charlie friend group got drunk on Halloween, New Year, and in late April at Charlie's birthday. They are hardly swigging vodka in the gutter on a daily basis. Chill dudes.
@@raygoodspeed2382yeah, it's a bit wild to conclude that Charlie will have a problem with alcohol later based on what we know now. There'd be a lot more alcoholics in the world if this level of teenage drinking is truly a problem. Most teenagers grow out of it.

@@sandramatras8345 Agreed. I knew plenty of people who would binge drink in high school and (especially) at university, but very few wind up having a problem with it in later life. Getting drunk at a party once every few months isn’t indicative of future alcoholism.
14:52 the one thing that also happens at 16 is age of consent
Here, in the rural mid-west, there was a lot of drinking in high school, and quite a bit of drug use as well, at least in the early '70s. Charlie's birthday party was typical of our weekends, although our preferred form of alcohol was beer and wine. Congrats on your sobriety, Alex.
the way you guys kept misgendering darcy was making me very upset and i understand that you guys are from a different generation but how can you correctly gender elle but not even try to gender darcy correctly. also darcys actor uses he/him. please try to respect that even if during the edit you put a little "*they" text on the screen when you guys slip up.
Give them some slack. Sometimes it takes more than an hour (screen time) to change what you are used to using and there's a lot of other things going on in this episode. It usually takes me that long just to get every ones names right. Be upset with those who really deserve it.
@@bengilbert7655 Also, Darcy was still using She/Her up until episode 4. My one coworker told me that when she first came out as nonbinary, it took people months to get used to it, and she didn't get upset with them (She uses She/They/Them interchangeably. I always knew whether to call her She or They by what she chose to wear to work that day, because some days she was more feminine, and some days she was more androgynous, and it usually depended on her mental state at the time.)
"Kizzy Edgell formerly identified as non-binary and used exclusively they/them pronouns." Then, " In 2023, he came out as transmasculine and queer, and uses BOTH he/him and they/them pronouns." [The article i'm quoting, used 'he'; but using 'they' is legitimate, too, since Kizzy chose it as an option.]** ** Since they approve of the use of 'they/them,' I'm using 'they/them/their' because it's easier for me to keep straight in writing.] In the TV show, their character Darcy Olsson, in season 3, identifies as non-binary and chose they/them pronouns. Darcy tells Charlie (in Tao's video in 3x4) that they were trying out they/them pronouns. In 3x7, Darcy affirms to Tara that they are non-binary, and in a conversation with Nick, Tara refers to Darcy with they/them/their pronouns.
19:43 i have the same thoughts lmao i’m a dude i’m on the bi/pan side but leaning more towards guys recently, idk its always more easier to…”intercourse” heh we men are dogs so i get more comfortable very quickly lol
After the argument with Nick, Charlie cut himself again. He cuts his upper arms, that is why he holds them when he is stressed. And the first famous kiss was at Harry's party, 10 days before Charlie's 15th Birthday.
TW: Self Harm think there were a couple of times in S2 when we see Charlie digging into his upper arm, not just holding it. Possibly just getting relatively harmless euphoria/relief from briefly pushing his scratchy clothes into his flesh. I’m not sure of the self harm timeline, but he may have been doing a more damaging digging into a cut to irritate or reopen the healing cut.
With season 4 talks you have to understand that the show has now caught up with the webcomic.
A couple of things about the possible season 4... [Warning: Brief spoilers for episode 3x8] Season 3 ends *** towards the end *** of book 5. In the show, the last spoken line was "I love you ... and you are SO fucking hot." Aside: [When I heard that there might be a bit of swearing in season 3, because the guys are older. I thought about the idea that if you're going to add just a bit, the swearing shouldn't be willy-nilly; it should be appropriate for the context. I read that one line in the book and thought that if you're going to keep an f-bomb in the script --- that was an emotionally appropriate line to put it in. I'm glad Alice did, but I always hear the line spoken with slightly more intensity than Kit Connor gave it. (But Kit tends to make Nick very soft spoken in general, so...)] (Book Charlie was momentarily embarrassed by Nick's exclamation, though...) *** *** *** However, there was more that follows that event in book 5. Nick had just come back from the road trip, so there were things they had not talked about yet. Charlie tells Nick that he's been nominated to run for Head Boy (for the following year). And Nick lets Charlie know that he really wants to go to Leeds UNI. (Book Charlie responds positively to the news because Nick had not really been all that excited about Kent and does seem really excited about Leeds.) But afterwards, Charlie wants to know how far away Leeds is. It's a 4.5 hour driving distance. (BTW: Although some Americans think that's not far (in some cases you're still in the same state after that much driving) --- It is considered FAR by UK standards. ) Charlie says, 'if you get in, we'll be Long Distance.' Nick says yes. Charlie says, "Ha ha. Weird." (His mood is slightly dampened. ) Alice finishes the book with [To be continued in book 6] *** *** *** So what do we know (so far) about a possible Season 4? Alice said she wanted to finish their story in one more book --- book 6. Alice is still in the process of writing/illustrating Book 6. IF there is to be a season 4, it will have to wait until some time after book 6 is done. What will be in Book 6, according to Alice? She said that there would be one chapter and an epilogue. The chapter would probably begin with that last bit in Book 5, and then move on. She said she would include parts of the story from novella Nick and Charlie; this novella involves a time skip of an extra year. Regarding the characters being more emotionally mature than most kids their age, a lot of people have complained that it’s unrealistic. But the truth is that it’s entirely intentional on the author’s part. Beyond just telling an optimistic LGBTQ+ story, part of Alice Oseman’s goal with Heartstopper has been to give young people a model for how they might handle it if they’re going through similar situations. It’s low-key educational without being corny like an “after-school special”
My take away from that study about 20% of Gen Z identifying as LGBTQ+ was that the participants were identifying as “anything not cis and/or straight.” Whereas the relative proportions of gays, lesbians, and trans people have been consistent across generations, the big growth in LGBTQ+ identification came from all of the other letters. Yes, bisexuals dwarf other sexualities in the rainbow alphabet, and I genuinely believe that there were plenty of bisexuals in older generations who did not admit to being bi because of comphet, lack of vocabulary, denial, fear, confusion, etc. HOWEVER, I would like to draw attention to the fact that a ton of people are now identifying as aro and/or ace, along with rising affinity for the demi, pan, and poly labels. Also importantly, a lot of Gen Z are resentful of gender norms, and they are embracing the nonbinary options, especially gender fluidity. Some nonbinary folks feel genuinely agender, but many just feel like “cis” is too limiting when people’s identities are so complicated. So, you can find plenty of Gen Z folks who are in traditional different-sex relationships, but because of the broader, more open way they view themselves, they wouldn’t label themselves as straight. Same with single people who are not in relationships - they feel that because they don’t feel compelled to seek an opposite sex relationship, that they don’t feel compelled to wear the label of straight. I think the youth identifying as LGBTQ+ appreciate that they’re not required to pick a single narrower, more rigid label, and that Gen Z finds comfort in that ambiguity as they progress and experience life.
Harry bullied people (esp. Charlie and Tao) with homophobic comments because he thought they’d get a good reaction out of his friends. He was right - at first his mates would laugh, and he got the attention he was craving. In Harry’s eyes, gay people were just pathetic losers and outcasts, good for being the butt of jokes. After the cinema fight, his homophobic comments not only lost him Nick, but Sai, Christian, and Otis, too. Now he can’t go to a party because of his reputation for homophobic comments. He’s experiencing the social consequences of his behavior. He sees that the LGBT clique that has three people he used to have in his orbit (Nick, Tara, and Imogen), and it’s thriving. Gay people aren’t necessarily pathetic outcasts, and he doesn’t get social capital anymore from calling them that. He’s not at risk of being rejected by gay people and sinking deeper into hatred because he didn’t hate them in the first place. They were a tool to get attention, just like the other hapless losers whom he bullied. Yes, he’s going to reflect and not use homophobia to try to get laughs anymore. Is that because he’s becoming a more evolved person? Maybe, especially now that he knows his teammate Nick is with Charlie. More likely, though, it just means he’s going to drop that tool and try to focus on other tools he can use to get attention, because he can’t rely on it like he used to.
Harry has been missing Nick. In addition to thinking that they were good mates, Harry understands Nick was one of the real assets in his clique as the captain of the rugby team. It’s dawned on him that he’s truly tanked their friendship over his repeated attempts to drive a wedge between Nick and Charlie. By the time they’ve gotten to the top of the tower, he’s connected all the dots, and he gets that Nick and Charlie are a thing and why Nick has refused to come around-why he’s “still in a mood.” This is the moment he realizes he has to do *something* if he ever has a hope of to getting back into Nick’s good graces.
I know the bookshop is a well-known landmark in Paris but Isaac lives in the UK. Truham is is supposed to be in Kent so surely it would be easy for Isaac to go up on the train to London where English-language books would probably be cheaper. I remember going up by train to Foyles (which was then the biggest bookshop in the world, it's downsized a lot now) by myself when I was about that age. I don't know if it's still true but when I was that age, the school year ended two or three weeks earlier for the kids doing their "O" levels (now called GSCEs - the exams Nick was doing) while other kids' lessons continued or had the school's internal end of school year exams. I'm surprised there were no women teachers also acting as chaperones on the trip. With all the shots inside the coach, they should have been visible.
There were two women teachers on the trip, but they were almost entirely cut out of the show, either during filming or in post. You can see them in passing in a couple scenes: in the hotel lobby and when the French vocabulary quiz is being passed out before they go up the Eiffel Tower.
There were women chaperones, but they didn’t have any dialogue. You can see them standing nearby with lanyards around their necks as the Mr. Ajayi is explaining about the French skills worksheet at the base of the Eiffel Tower. Once you know to look for the lanyards, you can glimpse them here and there in other scenes, too.
Hey GVSV, I just wanted to say I have a similar relationship with my Dad that Nick has with his dad. I have almost had that exact conversation with my dad asking me when I was graduating and I have had to ask my dad to want to be there. But hearing your commentary on that scene was really healing. You saying you shouldn’t have to say “if you want me to be in your life” and hearing your love for your daughter in every episode is really beautiful. So than you for saying that, it meant a lot to me
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand FINALLY we get the surprise interrupted m/m kiss. But it’s not, oh no! Charlie and Nick got caught kissing and now everyone knows Nick isn’t straight! It’s ’we’re in the middle of one of the most important, intimate, heartbreaking conversations (Charlie: I’m stressed about everything)’ and THAT gets interrupted. I don’t know why I picked up on Charlie not eating from S1 E1, I just did. It was a note in my head in passing that he bolted off to school without breakfast at the start of the show. Then when he was playing with the soggy cornflakes instead of eating the morning after Ben assaulted him I immediately got worried that he wasn’t eating out of stress. I don’t have an eating disorder and it’s not something I’m sensitive to in others. I picked up straight away Charlie told Nick he’d eat at home then told his dad he’d eaten at Nicks. I don’t think of that as duplicity or lying. From my own and other’s experience of any kind of mental or invisible phyisical illness, people just automatically ‘mask’, behave as normally in public as possible. Almost no one with ann invisible disability or chronic illness asks for the disabled seats on public transport if we don’t look elderly, pregnant, in pain or disabled from the outside. We have to deliberately and drastically train ourselves into being able to do that. I have been in a storm of crying but had to leave the house and as soon as I stepped past the front gate my tears and sobbing inexplicably stopped entirely. My body wouldn’t cry in public. Parents get lumped into ‘the public’ after you’ve had bad experiences with telling them you have a problem, or that you’re down or stressed. Even if the parents are loving kind people, but they aren’t skilled and they handle the stress of their child being in pain badly, washing the kid in their own pain/fear that their child is in pain. Too many parents even fall into their own pain/fear that their child is in physical/emotional distress so hard the parents dog into into a stress response that turns into anger. From there they can make hasty angry extreme decisions (like Charlie’s mother) or quickly start shouting, abusing, or even hitting their child out of rage. Any of these unskillful or maladaptive responses by a parent told that their child is hurting usually starts the unsupported child into trying to parent their parents by masking problems or pain. The child builds a lifetime habit of automatically trying not to stress other people out by revealing their own stresses. A lifetime habit of not asking for help.
I’m so sorry you’ve gone through all that! Hopefully you’ve been able to do some healing ❤️🩹
@@elisabethbauman6190 it was a long journey finding the medication, correct multiple diagnoses (the ADHD wasn’t found until later life but the medication was life changing) and the right talk therapy (CBT, ACT, and especially 10 years of DBT allowed me to change my entire personality and long term mood in the way I wanted to). I’m still softening and dancing with the pendulum that says form light to dark as Ren describes it in HI REN. But I have learned how to live a life worth living even though I have been bedbound by a chronic illness for 10 years now. After my mum found a great psychologist and worked with her for 20 years, I even have a reciprocal cordial, loving relationship with her. Although she will probably die before she is emotionally strong enough for me to discuss with her the physical medical neglect that destroyed my life and worse, the particular misconceptions she had about me that broke my mind.
Nick repeats the phrase "I'm bi, actually" often, beginning in 2x2. (The phrase shows up on T-Shirts and lapel pins nowadays; it could be used as part of a Heartstopper drinking game, along with "Why are we like this?") So the question arose in your discussion, Why is it so important for Nick to insist on making that statement? It's a primary developmental task of adolescence to develop a sense of self and establish an identity. We saw, throughout season 1, that Nick has embarked on the journey to answering the question: "Who am I?" Until he met Charlie, Nick believed that he was straight--- It was not even a question. It was a component of his identity. That idea about his identity was reinforced by the heteronormative society he was exposed to in the boys school, on the rugby team, and even from off-hand comments by his mom ( for example, when she said in 1x5: "Don't worry. The right girl will come along, just you wait.") Also, as he mentions to Tara, he had been attracted to girls, including her. Being atttracted to girls was what was expected of him (and what he assumed about himself), and there wasn't anything telling him that that was not true for him. And then, he met Charlie, who he told Tara was his best friend. But soon he felt differently towards Charlie than he had felt towards other boys. This created a crack in part of his sense of self. And he is a guy who sees a puzzle, and wants to know/to find things out/to learn. Well, the "Am I Gay" quiz was really not helpful (especially if you believe that it is constructed to give real answers). He most likely thought: What does it mean to be 62% gay? What the hell does that mean? (You're straight or you're gay, right? Wasn't that a strict dichotomy? Shouldn't it be 0% OR 100%?!!!) And if it means I'm gay, what's with the girls I have liked? And after he first kissed Charlie , he told Charlie (in 1x4) that he was not ready to "come out as anything." He didn't say he wasn't ready to come out as gay; he couldn't come out as "anything." This suggested a question that he needed to answer; It was part of "Who Am I?" Two episodes later, he notices, as he watches the movie, that he was attracted to both Keira Knightly AND Orlando Bloom. ("What's up with that?!") More googling and he finds out that bisexuality was a thing. One more thing to puzzle out. He tells Charlie that he has been researching being bisexual and says that might be him , but he's still not sure. Two more episodes, and in the finale, he decides he should come out to the people who matter. That he did not want to go around calling them platonic bffs' and that he was SURE that he was bisexual. That journey from never questioning his being straight, to being SURE that he was bisexual --- took much thought over several months (from January to the end of May, when season 1 ends). *** But now that he has discovered that being bisexual is part of the answer to "Who am I?" ---- he wants people to know him as he knows himself. But a complication arises when he tries to communicate the concept of bisexuality to people who operate on binary thinking (as he had done). It's not understood that you can be bisexual (which has to do with potential attractions) while still being in a homosexual relationship, which has to do with who you have established an important relationship with. They see him in the relationship with Charlie and think, well, he's in a relationship with another guy, so he must be gay. In some cases that he runs into, it's just that the person just names what they see according to societally learned expectations. And all he has to do is to say, gently, "well, actually...." And let them think about their own assumptions. In other cases, it's less benign. For example, Nick's brother David is quite ignorant and an all-around jerk. He dismisses Nick's self expression and says, "If you're gonna be gay, at least admit you're gay." He tells their mom, "Come on! Mum, he's saying he's bi. What a load of absolute bullshit." A case of bi-erasure in general, as well as an erasure of Nick's self identity in one statement. *** *** *** Trying to work out, as an adolescent, who he is, takes a lot of thought and requires adjusting what he once automatically believed about himself. It's a hard-won assertion of self and of an identity. So being a polite guy, Nick gently asserts that he is actually bisexual, when he lets people know who he is. 🩷💜💙
Well and clearly laid out!
Hey, Guys... I watched this in the middle of the night last night, sort of half-awake. When I woke up, I realized that I was puzzled by your trying to work out Isaac's deal. According to the list of episodes that you've published on your channel, you've published up through 2x6 (last night) and the third season episodes through 3x5. I don't know what the rules are about revealing information about episodes you've already posted/reacted to. To be safe, I guess, I won't be specific about the information/spoilers. But I can list episodes where you can find the information you are looking for. The information that you wanted will be introduced briefly in 2x7 (and implied very briefly in 2x8). The information is elaborated on in 3x1 and 3x3 (which you've already covered on your channel). Since this last is already on your channel, I thought you already knew about it. I hope I have not over stepped. 🩷💜💙
Alex and Carl watched all the Heartstopper Seasons in order. They thought they could get season 1 and 2 watched, edited and released before season 3 dropped, but unforeseen circumstances delayed the editing of S2 and thus the release of the season 2 reactions. They didn’t want to put off dropping the season 3 reactions too far, so they are in the middle of a hybrid/combined drop of Season 2 AND Season 3 reaction drops at the same time. I’m finding this unexpectedly fun because I get to talk in the season 2 drops about anything that comes to fruition in Season 3, up to the latest S3 episode they’ve put out. Basically it’s safe to talk about all of Season 2 now, and the latest S3 episode.
@@ariadnepyanfar1048 THANKS!! 🩷💜💙
Go back and set a timer with Nicks dad. From the moment he waves to Nick from the other side of the cafe to the moment he answers the phone is 1:42. One minute and forty two seconds and that includes the time it took Nick and Charlie to walk across the cafe, say hello, introduce Charlie, order coffee, and get sat down. 102 seconds. The guy spent more time using the toilet that morning than he spends talking to his son who has travelled international borders to see him.
34:53 I was lucky. As I was slowly coming to realize I was gay, I was reading the science fiction novels and short stories of Samuel R. Delany, who, from the early 1970s, peopling his stories with gay, bi and trans characters, and modeled triadic and open relationships. The books Dhalgren and Triton and even Babel-17 that I was reading modeled ways of living beyond the compulsive heterosexual monogamy that was portrayed almost everywhere else I looked. Decades before the "It Gets Better" campaign, they let me know I had a future I could shape when I had a little more distance from that town, from my family's home. I was a voracious reader, so apart from wishing I'd read a little less science fiction and engage more genres, my parents had little knowledge or insight into what I was reading. Dhalgren would not have passed muster with them for 15-year-old me, if they knew what was in it. But it gave me hope.
For me it was fantasy fiction. I was in high school in the late 80s/early 90s and YA authors like Mercedes Lackey were writing books that were positively full of queer characters.
That’s so cool!
I think Isaac wants to want it, and that's what he's feeling.
heh … that was me for like three decades before I finally came to fully understand about the ace spectrum. It’s a real pain going through life thinking there’s something wrong/different about yourself and never knowing what. Like Isaac, I’m “socially gay” but not much into sex or romance. And when I was young, we simply didn’t have the vocabulary re: asexuality that exists now.
Remember in season 1 Tao said to Charlie "as your token straight friend" which means that Isaac does not identify as straight. We don't know how he identifies at this point in the show. He's just not straight.
This episode reminds me when i was meeting my French dad in berlin and telling him with 23 im gay dad, his reaction was stand up and leave but im happy i have contact with my aunt cousin and my 4 half sisters and I'm glad Nick's dad is not homophobic just boring...the only thing he is interested is girls and rugby...boring
Nick's has his relationship with his dad to thank for contributing to him being such a people pleaser.
And his affinity to Rugby
Great reaction! I've been watching Joe Locke in the Marvel series Agatha All Along and he does such a good job holding his own with the seasoned actresses in the cast. Watching the interviews they are all lavish in their praise for him. I get the sense they feel like an older sister for him. Patti Lupone even sent him flowers for his Broadway musical debut earlier in the year.
I believe that by this point you have watched the rest of this season, but if you haven't, stop reading now... If you have seen the last two episodes, I just want to point out that I love that Nick Nelson is Bisexual, and is played by Kit Connor, a Bisexual actor who was unfortunately forced to come out, and that Charlie Spring is openly gay and is played by openly gay actor Joe Locke, and Elle is a Trans character played by Trans actress Yasmin Finney, and Isaac, who is aro/ace is played by Toby Donavan, an aro/ace actor.
In Toby's instagram and youtube shorts, as well as an article --- Toby Donovan, the actor, identifies as gay; Isaac the character he plays (is revealed to be Aro/Ace in 2x7 and 3x1 and 3x3.

Why do neither of you wear wedding rings? Aren't you BOTH married?
Objection!!!! Councell! stop leading the witness! Let him figure it out! Damn!!!
It’s the fact Nick and Charlie thought they were still a secret they spend all their time together Nick be posting Charlie they were literally holding hands going up the tower they didn’t think other people could see them
To be fair, Rugby King Nick and Fastest Boy In School Charlie did outdistance everyone up the stairs of the Eiffel Tower, and probably weren’t seen holding hands as they ran up. But the way they’re positioned on the balcony above the others? Totally screams togetherness 🙃
In the episode where Charlie gets grounded he tells Nick he’ll eat at home and later tells his Dad he ate at Nick’s.
This is Joe Locke's year. He started the year off in the Broadway musical Sweeney Todd to good reviews. This fall he's in the 3rd season of Heartstopper and is starring in the new Marvel series Agatha All Along which by the end was the #1 series on Disney+.
I'd infinitely prefer getting a hickey to being sexually assaulted, to be honest. But I dunno...maybe that's just me...?
Stranger things?

The only time we see Charlie eat is on their Date to the beach in Season 1. He eats some chips with Nick.
And the milkshakes?
@@elisabethbauman6190 Do milkshakes count as eating or drinking?
@@CathyY72Well, I guess I considered them as…substantial. They are caloric and filling and time-intensive to consume, so they struck me as meal-adjacent. His enjoying a milkshake with friends seemed significant to me, and don’t think Charlie would have done it if he’d just gotten snapped at by his mom. But you are absolutely correct, milkshakes are for drinking and not eating.
I’d been waiting for this one! 🥳
