    Rev, when I was a kid, my godfather owned a 1963 Galaxy 500, White ragtop, white interior and a Peach colored exterior. He told me he would give it to me on my 16th birthday (1974). He drove it as a daily driver from new. In 1974, he was T-Boned at an intersection in Boston, Mass, and the car was totaled. Passenger side was destroyed and the frame was a goner. Needless to say, I didn't get the car. I'm guessing you are getting these old Ford's running and rolling and flipping them to people looking for and old car to tinker with. Love that you are saving these beauties.
    I do have a suggestion for you: You and your dad concentrate on Fords, so you are looking at maybe four or five basic engines: 289, 351, 360, 390 V8s, 300 Straight 6. You and your dad should pool some cash and buy a basic start up kit, that either of you can use and replace as you go. Start with a Steel Boat gas tank and add a clickity clack fuel pump. Add plugs, points, condensers, rotors, wires, distributor caps, solenoids and battery cables for each engine you expect to work on. One set each of 14" and 15" tires and wheels. Fuel, air and oil filters for each engine type. Finally, a couple of rolls of fuel and vacuum tubing. Then, rather than running back and forth to the part store, you will have almost everything you need on hand. Then you can replace the used parts in one run to the parts store AFTER you get the old Fords running. You can also document the parts used for a future buyer.

    I had a real scare last year at the post office with my VERY NICE 68 Mustang I bought in 1977. 289 Rev, I know you like them... I hit the starter and the engine fired right off, but the starter wouldn't stop cranking! I turned the key completely off, but it just kept cranking! I knew I was almost certainly going to have a fire, the battery was in excellent shape and wouldn't stop cranking it. I was so scared I was going to watch my beautiful car of 43 years go up in flames . Then after about 15, 20 seconds , It hit me, I grabbed the starter solenoid and started cranking it up and down as fast and hard as I could! After about 20, 30 seconds, the thin metal part snapped in half, and it stopped cranking. PHEW, I was so relieved and thanked God for putting that idea in my head. So I replaced the solenoid and that solved the problem. My mechanic suggested putting a kill switch on the car , which instantly disconnects the battery when I turn the key it comes with. So if that ever happens again, I can stop it quick. !! I also use it when I'm going away, so there's no power to the car, its old, so JUST IN CASE,, you never know with old original wiring.....and I also now carry a firextinguisher in ALL MY CARS. I think you have a good one here, looks like its got alot less rust, and decent interior too. Straight body, yeah I like it! Looking forward to more on this one!

    • @RevStoration
      @RevStoration  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John... when the solenoid sticks closed it can be scary... I usually leave my ground battery terminal an ounce below tight, so if I have to I can pull it off fast... Glad you got it to stop cranking... Thanks for watching.

    Go to a lawnmower repair shop and buy a used mower gas tank. You can set it on the windshield and run a line to the carb. That way you can have a fair supply of gas to keep them running. A boat gas tank with an electric fuel pump is even better.

    • @RevStoration

    Just a friendly suggestion from a grouchy old mechanic it would be a good idea to fully rotate the motor over to make sure the valves are stuck so that when you spin it over with a starter you don’t bend the Valve ina perfectly good motor. Also I would pull the plugs and put some lubrication down those spark plug holes because more than likely there is some rust formed and you might break a piston score of the cylinder walls and pistons

    • @RevStoration
      @RevStoration  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right old Freddy weiland with his old Ford 464 wheel drive 44 inch motors he said pump it twice and hold it to the floor and she'll fire up every time

    • @RevStoration
      @RevStoration  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      True... But this one was not getting enough fuel... I usually pump 2 or 3 times and they fire up. When everything else is right...

    • @andrewhigdon8346
      @andrewhigdon8346 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, having great experience with these I’ve gotta put in my ten cents. If it’s warm, no gas pedal pumping needed. If it’s cold, one full stroke of the pedal sets the choke, which releases after the heater hose running along the choke coil warms up that coil enough that it rotates and releases the step cam for a regular idle speed. Cold start idle should be about 900 rpm, war, start about 700rpm. Now a hot start may require a WOT position to fire off. They get heat soak

    I was 8 when these were new. Nice cars. In 69 my dad bought a new LTD. LOADED. really nice car, 390 v8, moved the car very well. A real freeway cruiser! I remember it had hideaway headlights, vacuum actuated, when you turned them on and off you would hear a hissing sound inside the car. We had it i think 10 years, when he sold it. Those headlights never gave a problem.

    That's the factory skim coat they used to get a smooth surface for paint. All of them have that coat even my 17k orig mile 66 4 door. The way you have to tell if its been hit is look inside the trunk area at the backside of the quarter and see if its boogered up. That one looks pretty darned straight and in decent condition. The one thing that has been pretty much constant on the ones I've dealt with is the rear window leaking and the rear floor pans, trunk floor and underseat areas get cancer in them real bad. If its not already eaten away make sure to clean the trunk rain gutter out and keep leaves n stuff out of there. Once it gets holes or the rear window seal starts leaking the pans take a beating quickly

    • @RevStoration
      @RevStoration  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep.. the trunk lid had leaves but thank goodness it wasn't getting water in it... I will clean it out... The back was bumped... the inside from the trunk is noticeable... I will probably do a little metal work and re skim it... Thanks for watching friend.

    Rev , loving the channel would like to offer a bit of an fyi.. clearly you are in to the vintage Fords, just a tip when you are servicing the pre-1975s with conventional ignition , there was a serious issue with the breaker plates inside the distributor ( the points attach to this)and if the plastic bushings wore seriously worn, the points COULD move around even if properly set/gapped and cause starting /running issues just something might want to keep eye on

    I had a 65 custom the model just below the galaxy in trim level. It had a 352 under the hood with a tremendous amount of torque! Had nearly 120,000 on the odometer when I purchased it and after a water pump belts and hoses the car ran like a dream. It was sitting outside for 3+ years the lifters somewhat stuck and smoked like a chimney until two days after running it around. It had so much torque I had to put in solid motor mounts DIY version because they did not make solid mounts? The four barrel carburetor was excellent until the plastic linkage broke for the secondaries. I think Fort was experiencing some primer issues during this time, because mine was an Arizona vehicle this surface rust was ridiculous to remove! Even a belt sander with 80 grit sandpaper and a 9 inch angle grinder with a wire wheel it was beyond a brutal workout. The front bushings and steering components were shot and would love to known about putting the Mustang 2 frontend on it. The rear end was sagging pretty badly so a water pipe spacer went under the coils, along with coil over socks very stiff rear end great for cornering because this car was extremely tail heavy especially in the rain! Along with some light truck tires in a homemade trailer hitch this thing was a beast. To teach me how to do drum brakes my grandpa taught me how to do the first one and I had to do the rest of them oh joy that was. Drove that car three times across this country and unfortunately it's demise was a scrapyard and why would I say that? The galaxies were always higher on the collectibility and the customs were not a lot more rare but not sought after never knew why. Not bad for somebody at 17 and to give anybody an idea of its size is 20 feet bumper-to-bumper almost the same dimensions as a full-size pickup. Even if I still had the vehicle it's 30 gallon tank would be gone and only days at $1.25 per gallon it would take $100 bill today to fill it today. It's sad and unfortunate many of these old dinosaurs turned into scrap or unusable rust buckets. Today's car's would not survive 30 years in some back lot especially in Arizona with the heat!
