I took delivery of my Cyberster (dual motor ) 3 months ago in Thailand and now have 7000 km on the clock. Very impressive and enjoyable car. Mechanically, quality and performance well executed. Software is a bit less inspiring but overall a wonderful product from MG/SAIC. Actually good value for money. Im quite pleased. 👍😁
Great that MG have a new sports car. I used to have an MGF when they first came out. The Cyberster is on another level. The first affordable electric sports convertible.
Delightful video. Loved the DeWalt Drill gag too. Wonderful to see a reviewer having so much fun doing his job. BTW….Ah the joys of SAIC electronics. I remember British car electronics. Apparently in car enthusiast circle the British Lucas electronics (Loose Connections And S……) was known as “The Prince of Darkness..
So Richard left it in Eco on you did he. ;) Love your reviews though Gav, have to be the first ever car reviewer I've seen get breathalysed during their review. Looking forward to your full review. Great looking car though.
Unfortunately the Cyberster does not retain specific setting changes. When turned off and back on the driving mode reverts to "comfort" and any driving aids you have disabled are reset. Ugh. Generally it means on startup a tedious procedure is needed each time before setting off or it will beep at you and the regen disappears. All needs put back correctly. My other EV a Tesla doesn't have those niggling issues as the driver profile software remedies those small frustrations. Great car the MG but they need a lesson in software implementation.
Nice video Gavin! Looking forward to the full review. I’m also looking forward to my local MG dealer letting have a test drive of one of these although I’m not sure how forthcoming they’ll be 😅
Love a convertible, and I do own a V8 one. I saw one of these in Thailand recently and it looked beautiful and could make a good weekend car, as long as you do not want to drive long distances.
Thanks for another amusing video! Its way out of my budget range but does look pretty cool. I'm sure some day we get the EV equivalent of a MX-5 (lightish and relatively cheap).
Given the Cyberster shares the same underlying platform "MSP" as the MG4, it bodes well for the driving dynamics given the positive reviews of the MG4s handling. Unfortunately I think it's far too expensive for what you get. Why is it more than twice the price of the MG4 X-Power? It doesn't seem to stack up.
Unfortunately, these are the economies of scale. MG4s are selling by the absolute bucket load, and they are built to do just that. The result is that SAIC/MG don't need to make a lot of money on each vehicle sold to recoup the costs involved. The Cyberstar is never goinbg to be a big seller, so it's there as a "halo" model for the brand. They're probably expecting to sell about 2-3% of the numbers of the 4, and all the costs invoilved have to be recouped on a much smaller number of units. There are also a lot of things on this car that are going to be unique to it, unlike pretty much everything else that SAIC does, so the "vertical integration" that allows Chinese (and Korean) brands to make a profit on lower priced cars, isn't there. Yes, the platform is the same, but there's a hell of a lot on this car that isn't platform related. OTOH, it is still a LOT cheaper than almost anybody else could sell it for.
Doesn't help that they are only selling the top trim big battery dual motor version in NZ. If I were to buy this car, I would actually go for the base trim RWD smaller battery version. Not only would it be a good bit cheaper, and still have more than good enough straightline speed, handling would also be improved since it would be both RWD and also much lighter in weight.
Wonder how big of the market this car will have (especially when they not selling it in the USA) and how many do they have to sell to cover the R&D that went into the car design and production costs?
We get the rear drive version in the UK too. This has a better range and is cheaper to buy and is probably more fun to drive although the speed is down a bit. This would be prohibitively expensive for the US market because of the ridiculous tariffs they apply on Chinese cars to protect their archaic automotive industry.
Yeah, height is not an advantage. I'm 6'2" and found it cramped, although that was in a Chinese-menu LHD pre-production Cyber(Road)ster example. I had a quick convo with Tom Ford over at Top Gear about this and he reckoned the production models had a bit more seat adjustment, though the squab height was still too high (he's just a bit shorter than me). I'm interested in how the 2+2 Cyber GTS hard top will feel - hopefully a bit more seat travel will be possible.
Yes, you were wrong. We do have a space project in the UK, it's based in the north of Scotland. But sadly the first attempt at a launch went pear shaped. Bloody Lucus electronics probably 😂😂
The union jack tail lights on MGs over recent years baffles me. Because the cars with this feature were not designed or manufactured in Britain - so it feels a bit like taking the piss.
With an ev, if the range is say 450km does that mean it does that in stop start traffic or is that only for highway driving and stop start traffic is alot less?
Yes, breathalizers/mobile breath tests have been used in Australia and New Zealand for many years. It detects alcohol in breath and reports the amount of alcohol in the person's blood based on that.
@@ad_fletch unfortunately not, the one gripe the design studio had was the seat was too high, but as there are batteries under the floor, no go. However, batteries will get thinner etc, so in the future who knows?
It’s so mid life crisis due to cheese design . Mg /SAIC are still 2 or 3 yeas behind in styling and quality of finish . It’s a bit like the BzyD atto , which is an awful retro stream punk style / captain nautilus look . In 3 years MG will be getting close to European styling levels .
When i was a kid I wanted a green MG. 40 years later, i want a red one...
40 years ago it maybe was something, now it's just chinese
@@user-wq9mw2xz3j The Cyberster is designed by a British team based in Britain. Get educated.
Chinese ev with an MG badge
@@user-wq9mw2xz3jThen that's better.
@@user-wq9mw2xz3j Don't care In THIS case. Still a good car. Blanket statement ignoring the specifics is just silly.

It's amazing to think how much info you have packed in this short 10 minute video. Well done and thank you Gavin.

This is the best car out man!
Maybe until the new Sportster comes out, then nothing will compare.
Joseph Lucas - “The Prince of Darkness”
Lucas is an acronym for Loose Unsoldered Connections and Splices.
*cries in British Leyland*
Oh I've used that quip for decades - glad to see it's still alive. 👍

Got me going to have a true Convertible EV with Wind and Sun on my Face !!!

Seems a GT more than a sports car, in which case, it's not bad. But for 6 figures, I wonder how many potential buyers are out there?
One.

Depending on the perspective you are looking at. Anything this fast and style on ICE will cost 3 times this.

Test if golf clubs fit in the back and if your toupee will fly off at highway speeds to make sure this car is appropriate for its customer base

"Fridge on fire!". My new exclamation in a non-sweary environment.
I still like my '90 MX5. Admittedly it'd be awesome to repower it with that new 'Quark' motor from Koenigsegg. Now that would be crazy!

Those doors look quite high when they're open, i wonder how that will work in people's garages or in parking buildings.

Why did the English drink warm beer! Lucas made the refrigerators
Nice
Drop by in New Plymouth and we'll see if a 6.2 fits!

That interior is ghastly. Looks like office decor from 30 years ago.

There WAS a British space program. Past tense being the reason no one should take offense to your assumption.
Such a tragic mid-life crisis car, oh the embarrassment of the doors; let alone the weight of the thing.
2nd hand Lotus Emira everyday…?
Lucas, the inventor of darkness, was English..................
I wanted to like it but it is too many shortcomings.
No induction roar no raspy exhaust note, that aint a sports car, it's an appliance *and* to ask $130000 is just theft.
Funny. To your noise is the goal of a sports car. Used to be leaving people at the lights or first to the finish line.
Way too heavy.
Tesla Roadster is still a pipe dream while MG made their EV Roadster happen. What is going on at Tesla.
Get a Porsche Boxster or cheaper MX5
The cost of electric conversion for those cars would be pretty steep.
they are not evs.
