  • Who you are matters for Alzheimer's research and clinical trials, because the treatments and medications we develop don't work for everybody equally. Renã A. S. Robinson is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Vanderbilt University and the inaugural Dorothy J. Wingfield Phillips Chancellor’s Faculty Fellow. Dr. Robinson received her B.S. in Chemistry with a concentration in Business from the University of Louisville in 2000 and her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Indiana University.
    She is one of the newest faculty members of the Vanderbilt Memory and Alzheimer’s Center. Her passion for helping those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and understanding health disparities is manifested in her former role as Associate Director of the Outreach, Recruitment and Education Core of the University of Pittsburgh Alzheimer’s Disease Center in 2017. Dr. Robinson and her research team are actively engaged in Alzheimer’s disease outreach and awareness activities. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

      @Yummy Spaghetti Noodles I think ama "woke" person you would be referring to; however, science needs diversity. Men,women and different ethnic groups.

    Today I learned that you:
    1.Can identify as you feel like in terms of age.
    2.Can identify as you feel like in terms of race.
    3.Apperantly race, that does not exist plays a part in persons biology and genetically prone diseases.
    In all honesty, the fact that these people get an audience is astounding, it's like listening to empty headed race baiters.

    One cause could be higher cardiovascular disease in African americans. That means health wise a stricter control on weight and related obesity and health problems. That is strictly down to each individual. Not the state, not friends or family. But the responsibility towards ones self.
    Also to understand all nationalities can suffer this progressive disease and science is constantly working on a preventative easing of the problem. Therefore their work is global not insular, and bypassing certain groups. So everyone needs to put their hands in their pockets and give generously. Not see a slight when there is none.

    Clinical trials used to only be done on white men and we were all expected to experience the same symptoms, reactions, recovery as them. As an example, women experience heart attacks much differently than men. Studies have slowly begun to add women to see if what the physiological differences are. They need to add all minorities to better understand not only how certain diseases work but how they act/react in different communities.
    Getting a diverse segment of people in clinical studies is not discrimination, not having a diverse segment of people is discrimination. For those saying you want competency over diversity, well you can have one without the other.

    The main point of this video is to get more African American participants included in Alzheimer’s Disease research, since it effects this community in higher rates but still has a lesser amount of research done on this group. Don’t really know why so many of the comments are either so disjointed or so pressed, maybe it’s just cause the video’s fairly new?

    • @HkFinn83
      @HkFinn83 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it’s not the main point at all, as far as
      I can see. It’s just more ‘critical theory’ from the gender studies department (or some similar nonsense). I will oppose this and every sensible person should.
