    In Kathmandu, we grow most of our fruits and veggies organically. Also, my family has a tradition of quitting meat once you are 50 and we hardly eat processed food. As a result, everyone has lived to be 90 or more and not so long ago, 4 generations lived in the same house. RIP to my great grandpa who died at the age of 104.

      My great , and great great grandparents ate the traditional Lebanese village diet and all lived to be in their 90's. Hardly any meat, mostly grains and legumes which grew in lebanon, and lots of fruit and veg. I swear my great grandpa smoked everyday🤣 his healthy diet is probably why he was able to live and heal. My grandpa is following in their foot steps, he is pushing 82 and is still healthy and well.

    Oatmeal with blueberries for breakfast, potatoes and sauerkraut for lunch, salad or pasta for dinner. I lost 50 pounds eating like this. Arthritis, diverticulitis, Asthma, hay fever high blood pressure all gone. God bless John and Mary McDougall!!!

      The history and thus the data shows the opposite. The more „civilized“ a society gets, the more violence there is against children. Today it is not that obvious, because there was a shift from physical violence to symbolic violence, but that doesn‘t make it any better. Michel Foucault, Emile Durkheim, Pierre Bourdieu and many other social scientists described these mechanisms at large.

    My grandma died at age 105... She never had any health issue like diabetes or high blood pressure not even lose of vision... Her entire life she lived on corn beans and cactus they planted.. Cactus fruit for dessert.. Only once a year on her birthday they kill a chicken or a rabbit to eat for celebration they were in perfect health and died peacefully of old age not illness

      It's not hard. Generally you take a sharp tool, like a knife or sword and bring it firmly across the throat of the animal, severing the carotid artery. Humans (NORMAL ones anyway) have been doing it for thousands of years. Now, go back to watching Bambi and thinking the world is a Disney movie and let the adults talk.

      Yeah cactus is pretty good. I only like it raw or grilled though. Mexicans typically only eat prickly pear cacti. There are some poisonous varieties of cacti, so stick with prickly pear. The fruit is pretty good and the paddle-like leaves are cut when still tender and shaved for spines and then prepared

      Mark Roberge why ? because you found the okinawans? so there is nothing in their genetic information, seafood consumption, no stress, no pollution, activity well into their older years, no processed food, no chemical preservatives, mostly whole food diet, no technology, and artificial lights, fasting and low calorie intake that is contributing to their long life? it;s just that they eat plants?
      taking into account only 1 variable and declaring it king is just simply not scientifically accurate or even logical

    I am nearly sixty six and have been on a plant based diet for nearly nine years and feel great on it. All the health issues i had previously went away and have stayed away. The natural diet is the best one there is for all ages and stages through life.

    I’m 51 and live in Hawaii. My grandparents as well as my friends grandparents were all healthy and in great shape. Our parents were the first on the Western Diet. They ended up with diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. My generation, armed with info from the internet are trying to get back in shape like our grandparents.
    The problem is, there are so many diets saying eat this and not that.
    I’m going with my grandparents diet (Asian diet) and lifestyle. They’re all the proof I need.

      A 100 years ago, the ripe old age was an average of 40 years old. Its double that today so it's to be expected that certain ailments will become more common.
      If you live long enough, you will most likely die of cancer. Cancer being caused by genetic mutations that become more common as you age.

    I became a vegan in 2021 October, thanks to Doctor McDougall. I heard him talk about the benefits of the potato and was fascinated. Soon I read all I could about his starchbased vegan diet and switched to it. It was easier than I thought since I was already a vegetarian and had rice daily.
    I am a runner and tennis player from India and at 65 I feel so fit.

    Thank you so much Dr. My radiation dr told me I needed to be proactive about my health, and proceeded to give me names of drs for different ailments. I told him I was getting proactive I had started fasting 16/8 and was eating vegetables/ fruit/ starch.. he was speechless that I wouldn’t follow his orders. I’m now in remission and feel amazing 😻

    i watched this video 3 years ago. it stayed in my mind and at dinner time, i held back on the meat. one day turned into a month and had lost 20 pounds. now, 3 years later and 30 pounds lighter, i have been eating a whole foods plant based vegan diet and am never looking back. My mom and brother (who does lots of training) have jumped on the wagon 2 years running :)) i used to have a lot of acne, which disappeared as well as a muuuuch better immune system. Havent had food poisoning, stomachaches or even the flu in years!!! and i used to always be sick and have constipation. Thank you dr mcdougall for improving the life of me and my loved ones.

    I want to add to his saying that we eat like “kings and queens”...the food that is now provided is not just easily accessible, it’s also just processed with the cheapest of materials and unfortunately they are high in calories and give little nutritional value. And this food is systematically placed in the more low income areas. It’s easy cheap and quick to eat. So I wouldn’t say it’s like eating like kings and queens...it’s the modern diet set up to make the most profit quick. It’s hurting our health just for a profit in not just the food industry but also health care. It’s all about profit at the expense of our lives.

    Twenty nine years on the McDougall program, only regret was I hadn't found it earlier than 1993. Picked up a copy of The McDougall Plan at a book store back in the day have never looked back. The program is free I believe he even now gives away downloads of some of his books for free, the truth he speaks is in doing and getting the results.

    In Korea nowadays, parents feed their children dairy products like cheese, milk and yogurt to help them grow strong bones. They are feeding this really "healthy" foods right, but why are there so many kids going to the hospital? Children in this generation should be healthier than my parents used to be. They have abundant food and hospitals, what could be wrong? Since I stopped eating meat and dairy I have lost weight, I hadn't had constipation like I used to, no stomaches, better physical performance, no acne, better skin, no bad breath and body odour, no headaches, no muscus and fast healing.

      You could argue with Dr. McDougall on history but you can't argue on that meat and dairy are bad for you because the proofs are there from the people who are doing so better now without meat and dairy.

      +MsKorearock What needs to be considered is how the animals are raised and fed.
      Dairy is now lacking something which prevents hardening of the arteries due to calcification. Animals allowed to roam, eat grass and plants, which are rich in K1 and the animal converts that into K2.
      These outdoor grasing animals have good levels of healthy omega fats which fight inflammation - factory farmed or grain fed animals do not, and that is why eating them increases inflammation in us.

      Dairy is extremely unhealthy and unnatural food for humans. Would you drink dog milk or giraffe milk? Why not?
      Cows have their own babies, and those babies are the only ones that should be drinking that milk. In the dairy industry cows are artificially inseminated every year, and as soon as the calves are born, they're ripped away from their mothers and killed, or if they are females, they are turned into milking machines like their mothers. All of this because humans want to drink that milk instead.
      Dairy causes all kinds of health problems and diseases, such as allergies, asthma, acne, infertility, premature puberty, cramps, inflammation, cancer, and osteoporosis. Cow's milk is an acidic food, and our body neutralizes its acidity by leching calcium from our bones. It is no coincidence that osteoporosis rates are highest in countries where they drink the most milk (US, UK, Sweden and Finland).
      Cow's milk has a protein in it called casein, and the purpose of casein is to make the calf "addicted" to the milk, so it will drink it as much as possible to grow fast into a 650 kg ruminant. Casein is also a carcinogen, so it causes humans cancer. Extra casein is used in the production of cheese, which makes cheese as addictive as crack cocaine.

      VICtorian071 When you compare animals to plants, you're really just laughing at the suffering of actually sentient beings, both animals and humans. Plants don't have brains or nervous systems, so they don't think or feel pain; they don't *experience* their existence in any way. And btw, if you eat animal products, you "kill" 15-20 times more plants than vegans, because cows, pigs and chickens eat a shit-ton of them before they end up on your plate. To minimize the amount of plants killed you need to go vegan.
      Vegans are the healthiest people on the planet and live 7-9 years longer than average, so it's ridiculous to say that veganism is dangerous. It's dangerous to eat meat, milk and eggs, because they are the leading causes for diseasese and death in western countries. 15 of the leading causes of death in the US could be mostly prevented/reversed/cured with a vegan diet.
      How is eating meat natural to us? As said, eating it kills us. We can't even catch or kill anything without tools, much less eat their corpses raw without throwing up or getting sick.
      Animal agriculture is destroying our planet; it's the leading cause for climate change, the destruction of forests, land erosion, ocean dead zones, the pollution of air, waters and soil, and it's the leading cause for the sixth mass extinction of species which is going on right now.
      Veganism is the only thing that can save us at this point.

    Read Eating on the Wild Side by Jo Robinson. It may be true that most cultures have had starch based diet and ... their corn was not the sweet hybrid corns we eat today, their potatoes were not those nice fluffily white roasters, their grains were not hulled, polished grains et. It is not just about "to starch or not to starch" it is about the quality of the food regardless which diet you choose.

      ***** Modern starches are actually quite EASY to digest, and that is the problem-- they are super-high glycemic with no fiber to slow their metabolism, and this causes rapid rises in blood glucose and subsequent rapid rises in insulin.

      Read "The Vegetarian Myth" by Lierre Keith. Now THERE is a book with so much research to back it up, with innumerable citations added. It is not only an ex-vegan's story, but one of the finest books on ecology you will ever hope to read.

      Always eat many different types of starches/plants and always whole grain! Do not focus on 2-3 main starches. I read the book „fiber fuelled“ by will bulsiewizc and I can really recommend it.

      @The Autoimmune Guy I had Psoriasis Arthritis. Dr Mcdougall however wrote in his book no matter what kind of Arthritis you have the root cause is the same. And therefore wfpd can heal any type of Arthritis.

      @@danieleamadio4305 breakfast low sugar granola with fruit and dairy free milk or a smoothie bowl I add extra pumpkin seeds for protein. Lunch varies, I like fallafel wraps or a veggie stir fry with noodles or a veggie burger as a treat. Dinner brown rice and lentils or different curries with lots of beans, vegan mexican food is very easy as well and vegan stir-fry. Lots of options once you start experimenting I do use a vegan protein shake also Vivo life or sunwarrior and snack on fruits and nuts when needed.

      There are a few factors in reducing leaky gut at home . One plan I found that succeeds in merging these is the Richala remedy system (google it if you're interested) it's the no.1 plan that I have ever heard of. Check out the incredible info .

    As a nurse this makes so much sense. I keep hearing how we need a high protein diet to be healthy, but then I’d think about all those past societies he mentioned and their high carb diets and it didn’t add up. I think the missing link may be sugar-the carb we eat the most but does us the most harm. All those past diets are based on complex carbs with little to no sugar and only naturally occurring in the foods they were eating (such as fructose in fruit).

      And this is what made our bodies smaller, made us reproduce more and started the downfall of humans and their surroundings (farming crops and animals). A downfall that started 10.000 years ago and is peaking today. When we scavenged for food, and it was not all conentrated in one place like a farm, our population followed the natural wave action of the global ecosystem en food availability. As soon as we started farming, we concentrated all our food (our energy) in a single place, increading the quantity but decreasing the quality of not only our own bodies, but the environment around us. When we stated farming, it was quantity over quality, but quantity one from quality. Farmers took over the world and wiped out most of the hunter gatherers, that lived with the ecosystem instead of changing it drastically. That we ate carb rich foods does not mean it was the best for us, definetly not for the environment that's for sure.

Agricultural societies certainly led to most of our contagious diseases due to the close concentration of people and the human proximity to animals and their diseases which we acquired as well. I also agree that farming takes a massive toll on the environment. I don’t know if I would say that farming led to our downfall as it was a trade off...we began to advance technologically and have never stopped, but with progress there has definitely been a price to pay.

      @@sandracheeks1811 Well, there was a time where agriculture was far more extensive, mainly in western societies. Agricultural land wasn't so intensively used, and included lots of (somewhat) natural elements. Think about pools of water, rich soil from livestock, hedges and treerows, stone walls. Lots of half natural element that at the time would mimic the primary habitat for a lot of life, and in someway actually imitated a grazed, parkland like landscape, with patches of forest, water, grassland etc. just more organised to suit our needs.
      If the quality of nature and the quantity of our yields were shown in a graph, you would see that the more we produced on smaller pieces of land, the more the quality of nature went down.
      However, somewhere we did reach a balance point between nature and agriculure, with lots of life in the land that we use to produce our food. That balance point is now gone, because with agriculture, it's always quantity over quality (of which we are slowly seeing the turning point with regenerative agriculture and organic farming).
      Over 10.000 years we have gradually degraded the quality of our own body and mental health, together with our environment. Only by promoting more extensive agriculture we can reach it again. But if so much people want food, intensive agriculture using poison and syntethic fertilizer will remain dominant, drastically lowering the overall quality of our people and our land. Without agriculture this would not have happened, but like you say, if it wasn't for agriculutre we would not have technology

    this talk changed my life about 2 years ago. This talk stayed with me when i first watched it and a month later i started doing more research about plant based diets. i cut meat, dairy, eggs and oil from my diet and lost almost 30 pounds in a little over a month.
    Now, after 2 years, i still eat plant based, i feel amazing, energized, my skin is clear, my mind is guilt free and im helping the planet. My mom went starch based after a couple of months, she got rid of her arthritis and my bodybuilding brother went completely starch based after a year and is loooving it.

This is the holy Grail for rheumatoid and lupus..Before even seeing this video, for one week last fall when I was sick and had nothing else to cook, I ate only potatoes lentils because I was housebound. OMG this was a miracle for my body!

    I wish these docs and dieticians would get their act together and agree on what is a healthy diet. We get told to reduce carbs and increase protein. Then the next day we get told the exact opposite. There are vested interests at play but it's about time we get accurate data.

    Very nicely said, I stopped eating starch for a period of three months, I got sick, I went to doctor, they prescribed medication, I realized I didn't get better, I lost lots of sleep, got pain all over my body, as soon as I went back on starch food, every thing was good, I gained back my health. Good teaching, couldn't be better. Excellent

    Africans eat a ton of starch; cassava, sweet potatoes, millet, corn (maize). The main dish is always a starch, served with green vegetables, beans, peas usually cooked with some nut butter like peanut (groundnut) or sesame seeds (simsim). Growing up in Uganda, our family ate meat once a week. We did have milk, fresh from our cows. I do not remember seeing any overweight people. Two years ago, I went home and ate just like they do, totally against my American diet. Every meal was packed with starchy grain or root vegetables. I thought for sure I was going to gain weight. To my surprise, I lost 7 pounds in about 4 weeks. I did notice that they eat a small breakfast then lunch and dinner. They eat little to no snacks in between so you go for at least 4 hours without eating anything. Plus, they walk everywhere.

      This doctor should be ignored at all costs as well he is a cult leader and a savage. He is good at convincing people, however most will eventually do their own research and realise he is just a manipulative psychopath deteriorating rapidly from his own poor advice.
      Every one of those civilisations ate meat and lots of it and used their bodies physically. He clearly does neither.

    I have great respect for Dr. M. I believe this diet works for many people. I have been diabetic for many years. I followed his recommendations for many months. Easy to follow and loved the food. My results however were terrible. My blood sugar went up more than ever. I took a year off work to find the solution for my health. I tried many different food plans. Eating grains starches and beans made my blood sugar go up every time. Finally I followed a Keto diet and within 30 days my blood sugar returned to normal. I have followed this plan for more than 2 years. To be honest I would prefer to follow Dr M,s food plan, it just doesn't work for me. If at some time I become more carb tolerant I will eat more. I always eat a big low carb salad. I eat healthy fats like avocados and coconut oil. I very rarely it any processed food. I think the most important thing we can do is eat real food. What we don't need to do is attack people who follow a different plan. One size does not fit everyone. I would have no problem recommending Dr M's diet, and have many times. I have talked to many people about the Keto diet. At work I've talked to several women who went on this diet before I worked there. There results were amazing. I never push people to follow any particular diet. If you're interested Dr Jason Fung is a good source of information. If it works for you fine. If not that's fine too. The bottom line is we need to take responsibility for our own health. Peace

      I went to see Dr. McDougall speak in the 1980s. He said that potatoes provide all the protein a person needs. He also mentioned that the only thing a vegan needed was to supplement with vitamin B12 shots due to avoiding meat. That statement convinced me that humans are meat eaters. I know everyone is different, but for me grains, legumes and nightshades give me joint pain.
      I lost 30 lb. Eating vegetables, berries, meat and fish. Never felt better in my life.

    I never bought the "rice is bad" "coconut oil is bad".
    I've been eating 6-10 cups of rice/day. I have no diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, not obese or whatsoever. My grandfathers at 89 and 91 died of old age without any disease. They ate 6-12 cups/day as well. Meanwhile my aunts and uncles in US mainland who can't survive without soda pop and fast food are all diabetic, overweight, etc. 3 died of cancer and diabetes.

    I’ve been on every diet there is. Paleo, carnivore, raw food, FODMAP, I could go on for days. Bottom line, nothing has ever worked better than McDougall’s plan did for me. Beans are my superfood. Potatoes, not so much. But beans, veggies, fruit, polenta, a little rice, that’s where true health lies. For me anyway. I know everyone has their “That didn’t work for me!” story. And that’s fine. But for me, starch worked when nothing else did. Oh, and BTW, I’m a Blood Type O, the so called hunter/gatherer meat eater.

      One more thing is to boil the beans completely so there are no lectins left in them if you want to eat beans. Never eat kidney beans raw. I also heard corn Whole, frozen or canned corn is genetically modified.

    I think what we learn from this is really that different diets affect different people differently! For every video or study saying eat starch there's one saying eat keto! Some people do well with low carb, some handle starch fine, others in between. What is more consistent is that less processed foods are superior for everyone's health! I'm done being constantly anxious about my diet!

      I agree. If anyone wants some very good info read the book "The Blue Zones". The book is about the diets and life styles of people who live the longest in the world. The authors simply take the info they and displays it for you.

      Today it id incredibly difficult. Anyone can make a book or write an article regardless of any background in nutrition. What makes it even harder is these people cater to the American public. Which is why all of the sudden we all this gluten free BS. From what I have personally read. A plant based diet is the best diet someone can have. Again do the research your self though. Read as many books and as many articles. Eventually you will start to see common things between them.

    I've switched to a vegetarian diet 11 years ago. Never regretted it. And I definitely compare favorably with women my age in terms of the level of energy and appearance. Now I trust and rely on my body. It heals itself. My hubby joined my 'club" 3 months ago and has lost 20 kilos since that time. He's sensed multiple benefits in health and intends to stick with it. The vegetarian diet is really the best solution to a fulfilled, healthy and meaningful life. It's worse embarking on this amazing journey. Stay healthy and full of awareness.

      earthwalker7 how come it hasn't worked for you? I went vegetarian in college and I felt terrible (I think because I ate a lot of processed food and dairy) and I'm just trying plant-based vegan now. I hope it works for me!

    What's so interesting is that I read the same types of comments on high carb/vegan/keto/paleo videos. They all go something like "I switched to said diet and lost X amount of pounds and could stop taking X and X medicine and my blood levels improved, my energy, mood etc". How is this possible when the diets seem so contradictory? We all seem to lean in one direction and vehemently oppose the other side even when they're speaking of their health improving. We should celebrate each others health.
    It is however interesting to note the similarities in these different diets. They all focus on foods found in nature. Another thing worth noting is that the diets aren't super specific and so they can be practiced in a number of different ways, for example someone doing keto might include seed oils (and perhaps have terrible health consequences because of it) and someone does vegan might eat a lot of refined sugars (and experience the terrible consequences of that). Also, different humans might thrive on different foods. We know that about allergies and such but maybe it also extends to overall health in regards to our diets.
    And if nothing else, at least we can all agree that fasting is healthy for us no matter what diet we choose.

    One of the most dynamic presentations I've experienced. Watched it several times to soak it all in. But at 10:37 he totally won me over. Several months now, and my health transformed. The beauty is he gives you a workable replacement for our food addictions,; vegan (I'm currently vegetarian) comfort food. You don't miss meat and the greasy smell of fast food,...uuugggh.

    The real raw truth about humans is that our diets should be accustomed to the geographical area our ancestors thrived in. Most of those diets were fruit, vegetable and grain based. Hunting for meat wasn't an every day thing and of course animals aren't going to die for your leisure. Hunting was hard work which is why gathering (fruits and vegetables) became the main part of nutrition.
    He isn't lying to you. Our bodies weren't meant to handle high sugar, meat and chemical diets. Try it. If you don't believe eating this diet will work that's fine but what can you possible lose from truly eating healthy?
    One shouldn't be afraid of the possibilities...

      Fruits, grains, and vegetables. Organic because nature has its own repellants. Non-GMO products. Minimally processed products. You know, the works.

      I see what you tried to do there! lol. Not the chemical compounds of the organism. Those are natural. However, additives or tampering is what I mean by a natural diet. If it grew that way, it should stay that way! : )

      What's the distinction, scientifically speaking, between 'natural' chemicals and 'industrial chemicals'? Plenty of natural chemicals are bad or even actively carcinogenic or toxic.
      Here's another way to think about it: let's say someone is holding you at gunpoint and forces you to drink one of two chemicals. One is poisonous and the other is an anti-oxidant. All they're willing to tell you about them is that one is distilled from a plant and the other was made in a lab. Should that affect your decision in any way? Why should random chemical X, which was made by humans, be viewed with any more or less suspicion that chemical Y, which was made by a plant? Plants don't give a shit about what's good for you, they're just trying to survive. Humans at least have to pretend to care.

      Preaching a message is not exactly the same as demonstrating evidence from randomised, controlled studies though, is it? What he is saying is in absolute contradiction to what the scientific community has made huge leaps and bounds to uncover over the past few years. Nothing here to convince me he's not just giving anecdotal evidence and misguided opinions.

      On the contrary, the evidence is with Dr McDougall. Read The China Study, the best study ever done on the relationship between diet and illness. If you are willing to be surprised, you may find it very interesting.

      Furthermore (see Minger's book Death by Food Pyramid) a sizable portion of the population is genetically ill-equipped to digest starch, especially large amounts.
      Eating a bunch of starch is hardly revolutionary. It's what the USDA recommends. And it damn near ruined my life, with obesity, joint pain, etc.
      I quit the starch and started eating a lot more meat, and fueling on fat. I literally feel better than when I was 25 and eating starch as my main source of calories. I'm 50, and as we speak I'm headed over to the skateboard park -- when a few years ago I felt like crap, couldn't keep weight off, and thought my days of fun through physical activity were over.
      The advice given here is utter crap and cost me years of quality of life.

      I think what doctors who promote a certain diet fail to realize is that we all have different needs and disease predispositions. When I went high protein and high fat to cure my chronic acne it worked wonders. However, after 3 years I had developed IBD and was having migraine attacks 2 times a week. My body cant handle a ton of animal protein and fat. His advice is not crap, it just isnt suitable for you. Where as your diet is not suitable for me.

      mark y I recently started really boosting my intake of starches. It's amazing how something so simple can make you feel so good. Last night I felt the need to eat something before going to bed. So I had a bowl of oatmeal. That really did the trick. Years ago I would have opted for something high fat and high protein like sausage. Sure the sausage satisfied me and made me feel good; but it felt good the way drugs make you feel good*. The oatmeal felt good in a healthy sort of way.
      *I am not opposed to the responsible use of recreation drugs. I was just making the analogy that the feeling you get from eating processed animal products is more akin to getting high than getting healthy.

    He's right, I've been following his diet plan for about a month and the change (and weight loss) is dramatic. You can get yourself into shape by avoiding animal products...beef, chicken, fish, pork, eggs, dairy products, shellfish, and vegetable oils. Specifically, the highest benefit is your arteries and circulatory system change and becomes more flexible and pliable instead of hard, blood pressure lowers and stabilizes.

    Being an Asian, I rarely eat meat so do my family and many people that I know. Meat is not a big portion in our diet. Our main diet mostly contain lots of vegetables and fruits. We only eat meat occasionally or during special celebrations. I still believe meat is somehow important in our diet just that we need to control the consumption.

    For those who value their health, let me summarize it for you. Meat should represent less than 25% of your diet, and avoid cooking it at high temperature. Avoid refined sugars, avoid processed/packaged food, avoid salts, eat a large variety of whole foods, organic when you can afford it. Don't smoke, don't take legal/illegal drugs, don't drink a lot, sleep early and plenty, avoid stress.

There are some perpheral additions like Olega-3's and making sure our vitamins and minerals are not deficient, and that we are not poisoning ourselves with lead from our waterlines and chlorine in our water, but this material you present is the foundation of it all, and you're so very right.       A one sized fits all diet is not the answer for EVERY human population on the planet.
      For ANY diet you can name, there will be folks that will NOT do well on that diet and yet will improve on some OTHER diet.
      What is next? Should we insist that we all receive the same treatment for sickness....no matter what our individual needs?
      What about indigenous people who are predominately hunters and do well?
      What about populations living on fish and seaweed?
      Perhaps our genetic populations evolve some differences to fit what was available to fit our needs. Even then that needs to be individualized and to fit our health, exercise level....and change of seasons.

    In the Blue Zones they also ate Beans! Beans added to a meal of starchy rice slows the carbohydrate intake of the rice . And
    it slows the carbohydrate intake of the second meal and sometimes the third meal (new scientific studies).Thus people stayed thin even though they ate starchy foods high in carbs.

    The commonality I see among all of these successful diets, whether keto, paleo, veggie/vegan, etc., is people are cutting out things like processed foods and sodas, they're increasing fiber, and typically they're increasing their exercise.

      These indigenous diets are also matched to the group of people involved. They evolved to eat what was available in their region Move them to a new region and there is a mismatch . Typically such a move changes diet AND exercise patterns.

    It's fibre part. Wholefood unprocessed starch contains lots of fibre (indigestible starch) - that feeds the microbiome. Can increase this by heating and cooling. Starch without fibre (white rice) is very bad for us. Humans only recently started removing the fibre from starch. There are good fats. Nuts, Avocados, olive oil. Fish are also linked to longevity.

    The rice, wheat, and corn in my local supermarket today is not the same rice, wheat, and corn that my grandmother ate 110 years ago. Dr. McDougall doesn't mention that. He also never uses the word "sugar" and never explains how 21st century Americans are supposed to get essential amino acids and essential fatty acids from carbohydrates without taking copious quantities of supplements.

    I usually think Ted talks are lame but this one is good because this guy has a good message, is a good speaker and he lives what he speaks. Just look at him, he's fit and cognitively superior to most people his age.

    I've switched to (mostly) plant based diet, ate brown rice, red rice and all kind of unprocessed rice, and veggies for nearly a year. The result is the better health and weight loss. He speaks the truth! Dont mixed up bad carbs and good carbs people! They're totally different.
    Animal fat makes you fat, not starch or carbs.

      +Bayo106 being fat is unhealthy. Obesity is linked to many diseases. High energy levels will make you lose fat. They compared starch and protein diets in rats. The starch eaters voluntarily exercised more.

      Shawn O'Dell im just saying..so many people focus on being fat or being slim when most unhealthy people are not even fat yet. so obesity isnt the only side effect of an unhealthy lifestyle..
      we must focus on more than just obesity

      +Bayo106 obesity is a clear indicator of a poor lifestyle. right now, i think focusing on obesity is the right course of action. you are right, though. there are many other facets of health that should not be ignored, but when a person can't maintain a healthy weight, i doubt focusing on other factors will really hit home with them, or they become distractions for really making a positive impact on their lives. that last sentence was a train wreck, i'm leaving it though. don't judge. :)

    i'm italian. We are the second country in the world as far as longevity goes after Japan . Here, if you're 80 you are "not that old" . If you are 40 you are a "young man". Plus i live in Tuscany where the mediterranean diest is even more varied, thanks to high presence of beans, different types of rice, fish and lots, lots of vegetables and of course olive oil (ONE SPOON A DAY!!) Your diet is VERY important, but our diet is not "starch based" nor it is the japanese diet for example . We do eat rice and beans, just like we do eat vegetables quite often...we do not eat meat everyday that is true . Let's say red meat once a week (maybe) and white meat 3/4 times a week . But what makes a huge, HUGE difference from our diet to american diet and to american lifestyle are three main things : 1) WE WALK A LOT . The average old lady living in a small or big town will walk first thing in the morning to go buy food or to go to church, or whatever, just LEAVE THE HOUSE . 2) WE EAT SMALL PORTIONS . We eat starch, vegetables, bread, rice, pasta, YES , but we eat SMALL quantities . And very important we eat VERY little at dinner .. 3) DO NOT EAT SUGAR ! You do not need sugar in your life, you can find the sugar you need in the food that you eat, the carbohidrates , the fruit and so on . SUGAR = DRUG .

    Eliminating processed foods, packaged foods and eating as close to nature as possible is the best diet. This means stopping all added sugar, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, food colors, taste enhancement like msg. Also stopping all seed oils as they are highly inflammatory. What we are left with is : fruits, vegetables and meat. Eating in moderation is important. Also important to take care of mental health and stress reduction by sleeping enough, exercising,meditating, praying. God bless.❤

      ....because industry is the banks, the politicians, the media and has the money to study and confirm whatever it wants, despite ethical concerns, even to the point where great independent studies are washed or suppressed entirely. Then you have fringe idealists and researchers with strong opinions, that could be right or wrong, who lack evidence to support their claims. This guy is not talking about the biology of ingesting starch, and is using the macro approach, but is not citing much in either case. Scientific consensus and a lack of evidence are killing us.
