Apple doesn't want people using the mouse plugged in so they can force people to buy a new one when the battery dies in two years, instead of people just leaving it plugged in and using it for a decade without a problem
You get it. Nice to see you can see through the marketing. There is a financial incentive to the business while selling the benefit to the user but fail to point out the real truth to the client. Apple was forced by the EU to switch to usb c but sold it to its users as the new and improved connections.
About the Magic Mouse and I have thought it’s weird but when you think it about it having a rechargeable battery constantly being charged will destroy it. The battery lasts for awhile and it’s not a big deal to charge it
It quite simply is a case of "much ado about nothing". Apple claims ~1month (6 to 8 hours daily use). It is exceedingly unlikely any mouse will ever be used 24/7. Do these naysayers not sleep or shower? Now whether the design is ergonomic or not is an altogether different matter...
Used the track pads since my 2012 iMac 27". Currently got a 2021 M1 iMac and my only issue is the KB battery is now barely lasting a week, the track pad is okay and will still last a month. Good thing neither of them need flipping over the charge.
I was always on the fence with my lightning mouse when it came to charging from the bottom but honestly, for the one or two times a month I charge it (sleeping), its really not worth the hate and disdain.
I haven't seen any improvement in latency anywhere, it takes time. I hope they correct it, since it has 44.4 ms of latency compared to other logitech mice that have 15.6 ms of latency also by bluethooth.
They need to start selling the iMac colour matched ones separately too. Some people with the colour matched lightning ones may wish to change to USB-C but can’t unless they want a mismatch.
The Touch ID with intel verdict is still questionable. Apple did list Intel models on the compatibility page and technically the Intel models listed do have Apple Silicon in the T2 chip. The old lightning version worked also on the Intel models with the T2 chip so I assume with them still being listed on the compatible models section this would still be true.
No reason to upgrade from old lightning versions especially with Mac mini having charging ports on the front if you already spent money on these. Great for first time buyers though!
If you have opportunity can you connect Apple Keyboard with a cable to PC to check if it works. I consider using it both with my Mac wirelessly and with work PC by USB-C cable.
I've been waiting for this for a LONG time! I can finally get rid of all those annoying Lightning cables! It will take me a while to put the pennies together for an extended keyboard and a track pad, but I will do it as soon as I can.
I updated to both the keyboard and the trackpad and received them today. The trackpad didn't work with my 2017 iMac for some strange reason. It wouldn't scroll or able to click on anything, but the cursor moved around the screen just fine. Strange. Either it was broken or not compatible with my older iMac. Since my older mac keyboard and trackpad work fine, I'll just stick with them for when my new Mac Mini M4 Pro comes in next week. :)
Any change to the key switches or feeling of the keys? The full size Touch ID keyboard has a WAY better type feel than the compact one, I think because they’re using slightly different key switches. I was hoping they’d update the switches on compact one, since I greatly prefer the ergonomics of the compact keyboard but the superior switches on the full size one (I have the black version).
With Apple pushing wireless charging/MagSafe so much, I'm kind of surprised Apple hasn't bothered making a wireless mouse that wirelessly charges from a mousepad. Basically an Apple version of the Logitech G PowerPlay.
Im not updating accessories. I’m using old cable keyboard with two usb ports and it’s fantastic solution, also I’m using small Magic Keyboard without Touch ID and Magic Mouse from 2020 and they basically looks like brand new.
The location of the charging port on the mouse isn't a bother to me. A full charge will typically last over two months, which can be done when I am not using the mouse. And if the port was somewhere else, then it is likely that the functionality of the device could be used. By the way, I am using an older version, but it seems this still applies to the latest version.
Your battery health theory falls through when the trackpad and keyboard charging hole is not on the underside of those devices (I.e. you can use them while wire connected indefinitely)
Why do you need to use the Magic Mouse plug in? Well, for anyone who would love it to use that way, may I know why? coz you just need to charge it for 5-10 min max and it lasts a week. Its battery life is insane.
Its about time. Should have been done a long time ago. Also the magic mouse really needs a change in design. Its not comfortable if you're using it for productivity, 8+ hours a day.
Thanks for showing these! Can you use the keyboard Touch ID with an M series MacBook Pro/Air when in clamshell mode (screen is closed)? I’ve heard that it only worked when the Touch ID of the laptop is available (screen open) for Security reasons?
Honestly I suspect you are over thinking it regarding the port on the mouse. I think the simple answer as to why you charge it in the missionary position has always been that they did not want to go to the trouble of redesigning it since the non-rechargeable version, which I had for a while some years ago. The form factor of it does not really lend itself to a port on the front. I guess they could have put it on the side, though that would have been a minor sacrifice to the clean lines of it. Ultimately it is a case of form over function, though I did find it pretty usable and it is not the only mouse to sacrifice ergonomics for compactness or some other gimmick. But it is about the only one that I can think of that is currently rechargeable and yet does not have a sensible place to plug it in.
Curiously, when ordering an iMac you can no longer pick a mouse AND trackpad, you have to pick one or the other. That is kind of a pain in the butt if you want both color matched.
I think the magic mouse is incredible. What device do you know that can be charged for three minutes and then deliver a full day of use? Nobody uses the magic mouse 24 hours a day. When the magic mouse user needs to sleep that's a perfect time to plug-in the magic mouse. Yes I am upgrading my lightning port devices to USB-C versions to complete my transition from Lightning to USB-C.

The magic mouse charging is almost as stupid as not having a calculator on the iPad for so long. The simplest way to make the magic mouse actually magic is to have it do MagSafe charging. Of course, the mouse will have to be smart enough not to overcharge itself. Just like they improved Apple Watch charging for battery optimization.
