      Funny how I can’t remember the name of things when the camera is rolling. 🤪 My camera presence is getting better with time. I cringe at my older content. 🤣

    Loving the series. How I learned is much the same. Pre-internet it was service manuals. Multiple sources on the project. If you've got the book, especially factory manuals, you can probably tackle it. Now with the internet, videos, more manuals, specific forums and taking lots of pictures and video during the job. Also planning ahead if you can to source parts to avoid the usual chain retailers. Their stuff seems to be premium price and lowest quality. Rock auto is my best friend but watch the shipping costs. And this video reminds me how much I hate doing drum brakes. I have two rear brake jobs needing done this spring and I'm dreading it.

    • @troysgarage
      @troysgarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words. The school of self taught is slow but so valuable. My first drum brake job was a disaster. I put the adjuster lever on the wrong sides so basically it never tightened. I had ZERO rear brakes. I had to pull it all apart and start over. Learned a lot that weekend! 🤦🏼‍♂️

    You should buy a 3.5 gallon bucket of Evapo-rust. That stuff works wonders on removing rust from various types of steel and does not have an corrosive properties and doesnt harm the metal. I swear by it!

    • @troysgarage

      I’ll look into that. Still have a ton of rust on the cab. 😱

  • @operatordeathmonkey

    I’ve done this style brake drums and it took me 30 minutes due to some complications. Another pro tip u do not need to take any aprons off the get a wheel cylinder on if u forget to put it together. And the hold down springs are a pain in the ass

      Drum brakes are the WORST! I’m sure I’ll be doing this on my new 66 F250 as well. Watch for “Wallace the 66” videos coming this summer!

      We considered it, but the build had SOOOO FAR to go we opted to save some money here for other more desperately needed items. Still have a long way to go and it's been over a year! Keep watching, more episodes in the making!

    Use a torque wrench on those rims.
    A) You could damage the rims.
    B) You might not get them off on the side of the road.
    Thanks for the video. I have to do my '79 F250 soon.

    • @troysgarage
      @troysgarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do this often enough you get to know your tools. For the average Joe, you are correct. But I’ve done enough work with this wrench to know exactly how far to go. If anything they are gonna need a hand tighten soon. Thanks though! 🙌🏼

      A break issue! Kinda scary actually. You'll see in an upcoming video that we had to bleed the rear brake lines again. Found a great tool for helping with this to completely eliminate the need for 2 people. And now the brakes are solid!

      18" Cherry Bombs that I put on 20 years ago. We are looking at eventually putting headers on to help wake the engine up a little more. Already did a basic "smog delete" but still need to remove some of the stranglers under the hood as well. There's only so much that can done to a 351M, but we'll take advantage of what we can.

    • @michaelmalone7471
      @michaelmalone7471 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DIY Home and Auto nice 👍 I recently put long tube headers on my regular cab and it was a pain! The studs or bolts on the exhaust manifolds are so hard to get off without snapping them off.

    • @troysgarage
      @troysgarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yikes! Maybe I won’t touch it then. They are rusted really bad! 😱

    • @michaelmalone7471
      @michaelmalone7471 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DIY Home and Auto yeah I like them though I think it was worth the struggle lol! Just use lots of heat if you got a torch and PB blaster. Idk where the starter is on your engine but I had to bend my headers so they weren’t tight on the starter.

    They are called wheel cylinders, not that it really maters. There is a tool that lets you compress the spring and twist the retainer disc to remove it. If you do another set let me know then you wont risk that little dist flying at your eyes.
