As a kid I had a 8ft Jon boat rated for 3hp. So I put a 7.5hp on it with a slide throttle (Scott Atwater). While doing a top speed run I moved up to the bow to help trim the boat. It started to turn then the motor went full lock sideways spinning the boat on a dime at full throttle. Somehow I got back there and cut off the engine. Lots of fun. Thanks for bringing back memories.
Some years back we had a 13’ Alumacraft V-hull with a 9.8 Mercury motor. Later we graduated to the larger, flat-bottom, aluminum Tracker. Naturally, the Tracker was an upgrade, but.. there’s a lot to be said for the V-hull, and the way it cuts through the water. We now have a pontoon boat, but I still miss that little Alumacraft.
Trust me, one wave over the side of that boat will sink it to the bottom. Be very careful, watch the weather, and use that motor to get you off the lake quick and remember to take the waves head on. Do not let them come upon you from the side.
I ended up with the 1236 because it can fit with trailer inside of my shed out back. Started with a 50 Minn Kota trolling motor, but quickly realized I needed more oomph. 6hp Mercury ended up being the motor I chose, and it get's this very narrow boat up to 19.5mph on a calm lake! That feels very fast for such a tiny boat, I've driven Jet Skis on Vacation before and still feel this tiny aluminum boat feels quick. Enjoy your bigger little boat I love mine!
Love your setup! My son and I are wanting to get a boat for simple fishing and this looks great. We dont need a big fancy bass boat just something to get out there and have some fun.

Sweet motor made by tohatsu for mercury since 1988 boys. You also get a 5 year warranty when bought new versus a 3 year from mercury, they are great motor.
The manual for the tiller F-N-R shift version calls it the "2006 model", but your engine is 2016. Does that mean they continued to make gear shift and tiller shift in parallel after 2006?
we have a lot of 9.9 hp lakes around here ....what everyone does around here is get the tohatsu 9.9 ...then get the spark arrestor and the ecm for the 20 hp........since they are both the same cubic inch ,bore and stroke ....the ecm and the spark arrestor is the only difference in the motors .....dam near hit 30 mph

I have a 1436 too. Can I ask you for your opinion/suggestion based on your experience so far? I am stuck between two motors for my upgrade. Either the new fuel injected 9.8 from Tohatsu/Mercury (35% better fuel economy vs the outgoing motor) OR… The fuel injected 9.9 from Suzuki that has about 1/3 more displacement but is severely choked to bring it down from 20hp to 9.9. It is only 12lbs heavier and almost the same price. I can then later have the option to bump it to a 20hp for a few hundred. The 9.8 should be smoother running and more efficient. @@5050fishing yeah I’ve been working hard since November. I’ve also gotta buy a car. Can’t get the boat to the ramp without it. Maybe in a year idk
@@nikmar1338 just keep your eyes peeled. I'm fortunate that I inherited a 9.9 when my uncle passed years ago so I just had to find a boat. Took me months but I found a 1436 jon boat + trailer on facebook marketplace for $250. Just gotta keep your eyes peeled, I was too cheap to drop 1k on a hull.
