Watching from Fiji Islands...My mercury 9.9 4 stroke is like an angel....I have no Cons, only Pros!!! ...more than 8 years old and still running well..
I recently purchased the 9.9 for my Zodiac Style Inflatable. during break it had the GPS on and saw 17+ MPH once on plane and at 3/4 throttle, thoroughly impressed as I had light gear and my wife and I in the boat. Starts easy, runs quiet, trolls down to a crawl, loved it.
I had a 12 ft aluminum boat with a Mercury 9.9 four stroke and it would only go about 7 mph with me and my wife in it I ended up giving it to my son who lives in Idaho and he replaced the carburetor with a larger one for the 15 horsepower I think and he just called me and said that yesterday him and his buddy went fishing and they got 17 miles an hour with the Bimini top up very good upgrade doing that carburetor
I just bought my first boat. 14’ Jon boat with a 9.9 mercury, and your boat is such an inspiration to me. I’ve already began making a few mods but you’ve given me a lot of ideas. Great vids keep working!
I have the 4hp mercury and picked up the 6hp upgrade carb. Something seemed off when I first put it on, turned out it was not adjusted properly and ran really rich. After tuning the a/f mixture it runs like a beast. I run it on a 15' plastic flatback canoe and get up to 16mph.
It's fairly lightweight at maybe 400lbs fully loaded. I wish I had room for trim tabs since weight balance front to back is an issue but I plan to try a tiller extension next and see if I can squeeze a little more speed out of it.
@DudeLetsFish I was once able to pull off even higher with a Merc 6HP 4-Stroke. 10' Quicksilver inflatable with inflatable deck & keel, 7.8x8P prop, complete setup (boat, engine, myself, fuel, safety gear) weighed about 350lbs. It was a fairly cold yet calm March afternoon on the ocean. Maximum top speed recorded on Navionics was 19.5 mph (16.9 knots). I've now installed a 9P prop, but haven't managed to get a top speed of higher than 16.7 mph since.
I have the Merc 15hp 4 stroke 2015 model, even after a few months of sitting, it pull starts in 2/3 pulls and its quiet. I fish in the spring and summer and duck hunt with it in the winter. My favorite pro is that I can lock it in a higher position and get up in super shallow creeks in my 1436.
Same here- I live in Hawaii and draft about 10 inches with my prop barely in the water- I go over shallow reefs where other boats can't even dream of going
I live in Hawaii on Kaneohe bay, right on the ocean. I like my 9,9 be cause I can lift it up over my 5 foot sea wall or down to attach to my 10.8 Bris inflatable. I also like it because you can lift the prop to just under the water for traversing over very shallow reefs going virtually where no one else can. Also you can squeeze more horsepower out of it via aftermarket goodies like performance propellor and carburetor. I would also recommend the Mercruiser planer- Ya might lose a little speed but you will get to plane a LOT faster. Very happy with mine- Aloha from Hawaii!
@@andresfelipealvarezzafra8187 Actually my boat weighs about a hundred pounds. The engine about the same. I weigh 170. Totay weight 370- I have an aftermarket performance propeller which really makes a difference and a mercruiser stabilizing fin which really planes a lot faster
I know this is a very late reply but I have this enginne on a BRIS 10.8 and it cruises 3/4 throttle with two people and a dog at about 12-13mph, top speed is about 15-17 depending on water conditions. @@andresfelipealvarezzafra8187
In Europe small engine’s are popular and Mercury 9.9 out beats Honda and Yamaha in the 9.9 small engine sector especially maintenance and longevity. Great video
Iv got this motor on the back of my Bayfield 25 sailboat, works great and best is you can barely hear it at low RPM's. Sure beats my buddy's in board diesel! Great little engine!
I have a 2021, mercury 9.9 that has 60 hours on it. I have it on a 12 foot lowe johnboat with some decking and a Remote control, trolling motor mounted on the front. I can do 22 mph with this set up. I love the gas consumption and I love trolling with this motor. The one thing I don’t like about this motor is that I find that it does not start as quickly as I would like. It usually takes me about three pulls with the choke pulled out, and sometimes with the idle increased. I really wish it started on the first pull. It also seems to idle very slowly, although it usually does not die out. I have found that I fly habit at full throttle, going down the lake, and then stop and put it in neutral, it will often die out. Other than that, I love this motor, and I’m so pleased that I was able to get a new motor rather than a mess with an old used one.
i have a 12 foot lund with an insanely clean 2015 mercury 9.9 four stroke and i’ve seen 22 mph with a stock propeller and my tip for you trim it up a couple clicks and lock the steering and walk to the front so you can get on plane and you will go way faster
I am from Poland I bought a Mercury 9.9 HP in 2018 Made In Japan A very quiet and economical drive unit for my boat. I have a plywood boat I made myself and now I am looking for a mercury pull screw. Good luck Mercury is a good buy
@@kaavest Tohatsu has a 9.8 and 9.9hp outboard. They are different motors (209cc vs 300+cc). The 9.9 weighs more and is a tuned down 15hp motor. The 9.8hp is lighter (81lbs) and is max powered for its build.
@@dustinj7650 Yes i know all about the difference, 333cm vs 209, but on my boat used for wery spesific purpose the 9,8 do the job. To the best of my knowledge, it’s not just the carburettor you need to change (9.9 hp to a 15hp) you need to change the size of the air intake and I think one or two other things. You need to check with your mechanic. Great video, thanks.
had a 12 foot sears aluminum V jon boat with a 9.9, had one back in the 90S, it will haul azz. ez on the gas get you in real skinny water. IHave this in a Tohatsu 2021 9,8 209 ccm on a norw pioner 10. This is the most wersatile and satisfying engine that have been into. Portable for winter and little gas use and it get used a lot. Before a tohatsu 30, but the 9,8 is doing the same job on a bit smaller boat,

Is a oil filter adapter upgrade available? I know this is a old video but thought I would ask. I have a lot of hard hours on my 9.9 and would like to help it out with a oil filter.
Why wouldn't they make these EFI like the 15 and 20hp models? I have the 20hp with power trim and electric start and I could never go back to messing around with a choke again. Also they should have the same tiller as the 15/20hp the 9.9 has a really basic tiller.
Yes EFI is good and i got one EFI tohatsu 3 cyl 25hp in 12 years before i moved into a plase with a shallow vater channel and so on so no on a 9,8 carbureator new engine and boat. It,s no problem to use this application but you have to beware a little bit on choce if cold start and push it in. This take 2 seconds and if a trip las a hour i dont concider it a problem. But EFI is better in some ways and i think sooner or later they come in EFI. One thing is that a carbureator is primitive and reliable if yoy are vigilant on clean fuel. Then they last forever.
I would say they are all great motors, I prefer Mercury mainly because that’s all I’ve ever owned. If you get one new it will come with a warranty so any of them will do.
I’ve got a Ranger with a 175hp Mercury…..but it like you say you can’t fish places like Briery Creek and Sandy River two of my favorite smaller lakes! I looking to get another Jon boat….had one, sold it like a dumb a$$😢 it will have a 9.9 Mercury on it. Great video!
9.9 Merc 4-stroke.... The only con is the manual tilt... hard for old timer to get the leverage to pull it up when you in the water. Next time I'll get an electric tilt.
Great video i have the same motor and agree 100%. Do you know what the round knob is for on the inside of the tiller arm?? I haven't figured it out yet.
Speed and weather is not a factor. Speed is for tournament guys. Can't get GT500 performance out of a Versa. Look at the weather channel when you plan your trip. I'm running a 5 up and it's better than a trolling motor which is better than padding which is better than drifting. Plus, the reservoir in my town has a 5hp max.
I've got an 8 hp Mercury 2007 Great motor... Finally figured out the proper tilt sequence.... It's only been 7 years... I'd get so mad.... Always figuring it out eventually but not knowing exactly what I did different lol Gotta shift into Forward first....
I have a 2020 14' alumni craft jon boat with a 2021 9.9 mercury four stroke. I too went from a 22.2' aquasport flatly 150hp mariner to this little boat. I fish any creek or river I want and also run real skinny water here in Gulf of Florida Westcoast. The biggest pro that comes to mind besides the fuel economy would be how quiet this little workhorse is. I love the electric start but when my trolling motor runs my single battery down, it's no problem. Just a short tug on the recoil and it's running. The only con is the tilt/trailer locking mechanism, it could have been designed better. Putting it in gear to unlock it I don't like. They could have just added another lock/unlock lever on the front of motor. Although I do like the tensioner lever to tighten steering. It works good when trailering. Motor stays put. My next mod may be a small helm so I can operate the vessel without reaching back. Ouch on my back and neck after an extended amount of time.
I have a 2019 9.9hp mercury, I bought the upgraded carb and seen no difference in speed. I have been searching for a stainless steel prop but no one makes one for these motors. I found out that the older mercury models will benifit from a 15hp carb but not the newer 4 strokes.
I have ‘18 9.9 on a 1232 did you upgrade carburetor dude to failures.? Or to see the difference? I’m having issue with the carburetor and I have taken it the the shop for the warranty they keep replacing for new carburetor x2 but I just keep having the same issue Over and over so I was thinking upgrading. I’m wondering if I’ll get more boat time or shop time? But I’ll be losing my warranty. I just want fish more off the boat!
I hate it like I never hate before. One day it start, the other it doesn't. I am a trapper. I had a Yamaha for years. Always starts. One year winter get here faster and it frozen and broke the feet. I bought that Mercury 9.9 Never pull that cord that much of my life. It can start fine. You go install a trap at the end of the lake and BANG. That thing don't start anymore. I can just go in the deepest part of the lake and let it sink. I just can't afford the $$$ lost.
Weather is the most important just can't outrun a rain storm had a 50 and it ran around 30 got caught in a rain and the rain beat the piss out of lucky there was a a boat dock close by
U wanna talk about low maintenance...my old 2 stroke outboard I run on my 12 foot jon boat is a 1947 scott Attwater 3.6 hp and all I gotta do is make sure there's oil in the gas and go....it always starts in 3 pulls or less...and never let's me down....heck it's so old they used grease in the lower unit instead of oil.....so every 10 years or so u pump 3 or 4 pumps of grease in it and you are good to go
@@DudeLetsFish only things about that old outboard I would say are cons..are the fact that it's 2 stroke so sometimes in the cold u have to do some tuning on the low jet and high jet in the carb while ur running down the lake....luckily they put nice easy to reach knows on the them so they are easily tuned on the fly....and being a 3.6 hp with my and my buddy at bother a solid 250 lbs and all are tackle the ol girl WOT only pushes that 12 foots like 7 to 8 mph
Wow you don’t know what that drum thing is in the gas line? Your buddy says cut it off so you better cut it off. 😂 This reminds me of you tubers throwing away instruction and owners manuals as if to say they know everything about it even though they just got it. 😂
Your boat is way to big for a 9.9hp I have a 9.9 on my 12ft semi vhull and I fly I'd say somewhere between 20-25mph. I prefer the 9.9hp 4-stroke vs the 15hp 2-stroke I previously had because it's way quieter and better on gas; and to be honest the speed difference is negligible. There's also a carb upgrade you can get for these that effectively makes them 15hp anyway although I haven't done it personally.. Yet.

What is a 9.9 mercury 2010 pull start worth in great shape
Prolly $800-$1,000
I have a 1448 Jon boat with 2 trolling motors and I am planning on a 9.9 I’m company Honda, Mercury, Suzuki, and Yamaha what is important?
I would say they are all great motors, I prefer Mercury mainly because that’s all I’ve ever owned. If you get one new it will come with a warranty so any of them will do.
I had a 2012 Merc 9.9 and I have to say.. I hated it, maybe I had a lemon but it was nothing but problems, I was so glad to see it go.
What did you get?
@@DudeLetsFish I ended up building me a Thai Longtail out of a Harbor Freight 301cc predator engine. it is a absolute blast to drive !!
Oh damn, so you went all out and said hell with it 😂🤣 #loveit
did you spray it with boeshield t9? I heard some people do...
Thanks man!!
Just got mine. Thanks for the videos bro.
Hell yeah!!!!
I like the video u put out on the prop and changing carb
No idea you were in VA until I heard Briery Creek. Small World. I’m in Lynchburg myself! Looking at adding a 9.9 to my boat now.
Nice bro!!
9.9 Merc 4-stroke.... The only con is the manual tilt... hard for old timer to get the leverage to pull it up when you in the water. Next time I'll get an electric tilt.
You right! Now that I have tilt trim it’s so bad ass! Thanks
Great video! Did you get the 40 hp?
Great vid! Glad I got a Merc 25hp; still waiting on that and the boat!!
I wish I would have gotten one!!!
Great video i have the same motor and agree 100%. Do you know what the round knob is for on the inside of the tiller arm?? I haven't figured it out yet.
Hahaha, actually I don’t!
Throttle grip tension
I should be getting my 9.9 sometime this week
Nice!!
It has a fuel pump that squirts fuel into the engine at each twist of the throttle. That's why it flooded.
Ya know the Suzuki 9.9 hp 4 stroke. Change 2 parts (ECM and the flame arrestor) and the result is 15hp motor.
Wonder how many mph you pick up?
I have a 2021 Mercury 9.9 and at full throttle it starts to surge and drag, what am I doing wrong? could it be weight distribution?
Hmm… check the lower unit for trash, leaves etc. could be clogged.
I have the same motor....does it smoke (white smoke) in reverse when you rev it?
Never had it smoke before. Might wanna get that checked out if it keeps doing it
mine has the exact pull start issue, does anyone know how to fix it. was it the fuel tank
I think I know
Any more updates on the engine, mine hasn't played up yet since I wrote this comment just have to pump it everything b4 starting
do you use regular or synthetic oil? any benefit of using synthetic?
I stick with the Mercury 4-stroke oil which is recommended
I've got an 8 hp Mercury 2007
Great motor... Finally figured out the proper tilt sequence....
It's only been 7 years...
I'd get so mad.... Always figuring it out eventually but not knowing exactly what I did different lol
Gotta shift into Forward first....
Hey, at least you figured it out!! 👍🏼
I just bought a 2021 9.9 with electric start for $2500 NIB. The manual start was only $200 less
Electric start fo sho worth it!!
Is this motor saltwater capable?
Actually I’m not sure 🤔
Great video - thanks alot.
which rope are you using to back in your boat?
The TH Marine Z-Launch
@@DudeLetsFish 15' or 20'? I also have 15' jon boat and want to see which will be better....thanks
Get a handle extension for now
Could you hook up a consel to it
Maybe with a kit
Love it babe!!!!
2 and a half minutes before you got done talking. Get to the pros and cons.
I have a 2019 9.9hp mercury, I bought the upgraded carb and seen no difference in speed. I have been searching for a stainless steel prop but no one makes one for these motors. I found out that the older mercury models will benifit from a 15hp carb but not the newer 4 strokes.
Really? That’s good to know!
You can always upgrade your carb when your out of warranty Chris from OHIO
Thought about that
Yeah just in case
I hate it like I never hate before. One day it start, the other it doesn't. I am a trapper. I had a Yamaha for years. Always starts. One year winter get here faster and it frozen and broke the feet. I bought that Mercury 9.9 Never pull that cord that much of my life. It can start fine. You go install a trap at the end of the lake and BANG. That thing don't start anymore. I can just go in the deepest part of the lake and let it sink. I just can't afford the $$$ lost.
Dang man, hate that for ya
Weather is the most important just can't outrun a rain storm had a 50 and it ran around 30 got caught in a rain and the rain beat the piss out of lucky there was a a boat dock close by
Isn't an old 9.8 two stroke lighter and faster?
Not sure, maybe?
Well, I don’t know about a merc, but my 1992 evinrude 15hp 2 stroke pushes me in a 14ft Jon to bass conversion 25 mph in the Ohio river.
Dang, that’s not bad!👍🏼
Just like my old lady…….9.9
almost a 10 son!
But believe dat she’ll get her done!!!
Hahaha hell yessss!!!!!
U wanna talk about low maintenance...my old 2 stroke outboard I run on my 12 foot jon boat is a 1947 scott Attwater 3.6 hp and all I gotta do is make sure there's oil in the gas and go....it always starts in 3 pulls or less...and never let's me down....heck it's so old they used grease in the lower unit instead of oil.....so every 10 years or so u pump 3 or 4 pumps of grease in it and you are good to go
Dang!!!
On and on and on
starts in a bucket but not on the lake
Electric start only costs an extra $300.00, not $2,000.00 lol
Haha that’s right
A real pain in The ass to tilt the motor up while going down the river...
You mean a 9.9 is slower then a 150 🤯
Wow you don’t know what that drum thing is in the gas line? Your buddy says cut it off so you better cut it off. 😂 This reminds me of you tubers throwing away instruction and owners manuals as if to say they know everything about it even though they just got it. 😂
I know right!!!!! 😂😅🤣🥲🥹
Yet.
Got me a 2021 Mercury 25hp a few months ago 👍🏼
Just run alil racing fuel thru that bad boy and out run those pesky jetski'rz👌
😂
3 mins into this video and hasn't said one word about the motor. Stop rambling and get to the point.
Fast Forward
you babble waaaay too much, get to the point of the video.....
My next video I’ll do sign language 🤟
I’ll take my Suzuki efi 9.9 a bit heavier but the versatility of it is what got me
Paid $250 more for the push start on mine weighed in at 106
Ran the cables for battery to bow with cinder block for weight distribution perfect for Barney/bay navesink river. Gets me to the hook with no problem
Working on getting the 20 hp ECM and restrictor plate
