    Fantastic video. I do all of these steps to my Tohatsu. One thing to add... At 1:43: After the engine runs out of fuel, apply full choke and attempt to restart it. You will probably find that it will run a little longer. This will ensure that you get every last drop of fuel out.
    If you take care of your equipment, it will take care of you.

    Great video. When changing the engine oil on this outboard, it is very important to tilt down and back up again and drain a second time. There is quite a bit of oil that gets trapped and thats the only way to get it out.

    My personal opinion is oil should be added until it's at the top mark of the dipstick after a warm oil change because it has yet to travel to all the internal passages within the engines oiling system. After it has been run, then anywhere within the cross hatched area is fine.

  • @goldbeck09
    @goldbeck09 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Are there risks if you don't add oil into each spark plug cylinder? Should you only do the oil injection if the engine will be sitting in storage for a few months? For example if you are in the middle of season and changing the plugs, do you also want to inject oil while mid-season maintenance? I am doing spark plug maintenance on my MerCruiser 350 MAG and also my 9.9 Mercury Kicker and will be fishing here in a week. I haven't seen the oil injection yet...and trying to better educate myself without much luck on my google researching. AWESOME video.

    • @randomdiyguy1883
      @randomdiyguy1883 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've got a 2005 15hp 4 stroke. Had same problem. The seal nearest the ball bearing on the inside of the male fuel connection was ripped, hard to see. Replaced it. Then found a hairline crack in the fuel line connector on the motor, replaced just to be on the safe side. Then found a zip tie that was not tight on the engine side fuel connector. Tighten it and decided it's not a good solution, put in a metal adjustable screw clamp, much tighter. Then I found that the quicksilver 3.2 gallon gas tank uses a circular valve to keep fuel pressure from building at the connections nearest the motor. It connects first to the tank, then hand pump, then to the motor. Now the pressure does not climb and cause dripping with the changes in heat. Also important to understand the valve on the tank cap itself. Hope that helps. Apparently the EPA made changes to the fuel lines or something that has caused problems. I saw a TH-cam video on it. Also, having the tank full helps reduce excess pressure.

      As you Said it is written in the users manual to put 30 ml oil into each cylinder but you poured 3 ml . Or did you repeat what is seen in the video 10 times for each cylinder ? In fact, It seems to me that 30 ml of engine oil might be very much for each cylinder. In other videos that I watched about winterizing, recommended amount is a spoon of engine oil four each cylinder.

  • @JonnyKendrick

    Two things I would do different:
    Change the oil in the spring, not before you put it away for the winter. Used oil has much better lubrication properties than cold/new oil. Change it when it is warm and when you are about to use it. Also, when trying to evacuate the gasoline... replacing the cap on the fuel line while is running would put suction on the carb. This usually prevents all of the fuel from burning out of the chamber.

    • @SilmarilS79
      @SilmarilS79 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You change oil in autumn because old oil can be acidic and can promote corrosion in presence of humidity in winter storage. Old oil can contain water/fuel.

      @@onetwothreefour111Might want to re-think that. I saw a guy get thrown out of his boat and his boat kept circling him in the water for a long time until it ran out of gas. We could only watch from the shore. No one could get near him to rescue him.

    Sooo whats the point in injecting oil in the combustion chamber and cranking to lube the (cyl walls) but if it sits for several months if not half a yr (canada) n if stored in garage or outside the oil will just sit on the bottom anyways. Altho ppl might say due to oil film. However there should be film anyways since it has been running prior to service....but thats just me

    • @fizwin1
      @fizwin1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      the fuel can rinse that "film" off. Also it is better to keep the carb wet in the winter. Some disagree. Everyone has an opinion

  • @bipedalhominid6815

    Should've filled the cooling system with a antifreeze coolant. When you run it dry moisture can get in there and then freeze. Same with the fuel.. it's better the flood the fuel system with stabilized gas. If you run it dry the left over gas will gunk up. Also should've sprayed seafoam into the intake while it's running until it dies. Now you're winterized.

      water will show in the removed gear lube as a white creamy consistency. If that happens. you need to check for bad gasket sealing or have a professional check it.

    could anybody help newbie boater out, should i buy a mercury carburetor or Fuel injection (EFI) engine for low costs and ease of maintenance?

    • @richardcranium5839
      @richardcranium5839 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      carb models are cheaper. if you use ethanol free gas itl'll be fine if not run a stabilizer. efi is a little better at fuel usage but more expensive if it breaks cost more up front too. its really customer preference. personally i can clean a carb out on a lake. if fuel injection quits get the oars out

      carb is fine. Buy a used one if you want to save $$. Also it is nice and broken in. We bought a 2012 merc this year. Just replaced the fuel pump and did standard maint, oils, plugs, and used seafoam to clean the hell out of the fuel system and it runs like a top.
