Let the MSO take your breath away with some of the most lush, emotive, and romantic music ever written.
Inspired by the sensual folk music and dances of his native Transylvania, Ligeti went out with early recording equipment to ‘collect’ folk tunes from people living in the regions of Romania. His 1951 Concerto Românesc is a manifestation of Ligeti’s deep love of Romanian culture and music, with a distinctly modern edginess for which his music is known.
Adored the world over for his prodigious musical ability and cheeky charisma, celebrated violinist Ray Chen performs one of the most beautiful, expressive, and virtuosic pieces in the violin repertoire - Tchaikovsky’s Concerto for violin and orchestra.
A masterclass in unbridled melodic passion, Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony is a stunning display of orchestral emotion - ranging from aching tenderness to turbulent intensity - using the full palette of orchestral colours.
Featuring
Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
Jaime Martín conductor
Ray Chen violin
Program
Ligeti Concerto Românesc
Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto
Rachmaninov Symphony No.2
The MSO Gala series is proudly presented by MSO Premier Partner, Ryman Healthcare.

After listening to Ray's previous recording so often, I found myself "anticipating" the legendary string break moment and the audience's giggle after the strum😅
Same
Same here
Same here 😂
Same.
same, I was at that performance. It was awesome
Ray Chen's interpretation of Tchaikovsky is a rock star performance.
Rays interpretation feels much more lively than many other violinists, much more musicality rather than rigid notes
nah he shit
Ray Chen's skill on the violin has matured over the years like a fine red wine. Such excellent control of tempo, intonation, emphasis, vibrato and translation of emotions, followed by a sensational virtuoso. We must cherish this bright talent!! I can't wait to hear his performance in Taiwan and look forward to many more years of musical master performances from Ray. 🇹🇼🇦🇺🎉
@@sprickenvillewhich violinist version do you like most? Julia Fischer?
@@sprickenvilleeven his Seattle version remains one of my favorite.
And more closer to conventional interpretation of tchaikovsky violin concerto. For Ray's talent, he could play far better than this version.
Intonation? Fewer than 10 notes in and there was a bum one. He can play and I can see why some would like it, but it was pretty horrendous tbh.
Your growth and development in your violin playing has really gone so high !!! This is why so many people admire you.

So refreshing to see a violinist have fun and do a super unique interpretation. The music feels so alive!
I’m new to this, in which part did Ray do an interpretation?
@@mayko424the whole performance is considered his own interpretation of the piece. We call it that since it differs from violinist to violinst. Everyone has their own ideas and ways of executing things.
@@mayko424 I used "interpretation" to describe how Ray articulated/played the notes of the Tchaikovsky violin Concerto. He used his violin technique to make the music super fun and interesting instead of playing the notes in a boring steady manner. He played the standard notes that were written in the original score but "interpreted" how he played those notes.
@@mayko424 look at what he did for the queen Elizabeth competition (which he won when he was younger) totally different interpretation
Breathtaking performance . Ray is in tremendous form !
A pure joy of being the master of his craft clearly shows in all he does.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I’m so fascinated by Ray Chen’s playing, he always exudes such joy
40:32 Ray Chen displays great courage, i’d be so nervous playing this piece after that string break.
39:32 Soooo beautiful… 🎻✨❤️
Ray is magnificent. I swear... I know what I'm talking about because I saw him livee 🥰🥰
Ivnt been interested in classical music ever, but Ray Chen let me understand this type of music
Good looking, talented, such an asset to the world.
I just had to go back and listen to Hilary Hahn's performance posted on TH-cam. I love Ray, but her virtuosity was in service of the story and emotions. Ray's was about the virtuosity. Hilary makes the piece sound easy. Thanks to TwoSet Violin for giving me the opportunity to appreciate these musicians in a whole new way.
Itzhak permal made of twinkle star
This recording especially seems quite crunchy and heavy. One thing about Hilary’s sound that I love is her little crunch or grit but it doesn’t take from the music, rather it adds a lot of flair.
@@TacticalStrike No way. Hilary Hahn is my favorite violinist, but her latest recording of Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto sounds pale and emotionless compared to this one ---she simply does not capture the ups and downs of emotion, the heart-filling joy, and the deep, dark, sadness, as Ray does. The dark, heavy, sound, in this concerto at least, is necessary. Hilary's style is light and intense, but in my opinion, it does not suit this this piece.(No offense to Hilary, she's still one of the most amazing soloists ever!)
@@danielklempner4786 I do agree. I was more referencing her attack in her newer recordings of Sibelius, Prokofiev etc. Her Tchaikovsky is probably my least favorite of all her interpretations. I feel Ray’s playing in this recording is just way too crunchy it’s overboard. His previous recording was much more pleasing
I disagree. Tchaikovsky violin concerto sounds so much better this way. It's very expressive and relatable. Also, the crunchyness you're talking about probably comes from the fact that Ray has only been playing the Dolphin Stradivarius for a year.
I really appreciate that whoever is directing the live camera is familiar with the different parts
Ray Chen is Top V
My favorite recording of tchaikovsky violin concerto!
Mine too!
magnificent perfomance by the entire orchestra...Violinist Ray Chen, was wondeful, he makes the violin talk..
Came here to relive the RAAAAAYYYYY moment and was not disappointed (timestamp: 51:00 - 51:19 )
Phenomenal violinist. Terrific performance of Tchaikovsky. Exceptional orchestra. Outstanding concert. Bravo, Melbourne Symphony and Maestro Martin!!
He is a legend! What a performance! He is Ray Chen!!!!
It’s incredible how different this interpretation of the Tchaikovsky VC is from any other I have listened to (including others by Ray).
While I personally connect more strongly to his previous, string-breaking interpretation (I don’t know… it’s sweeter and dreamier, and that is what Tchai feels like to me), it is incredible to see how Ray has made the piece his. I can only wish to have such a control over my ability to make music that I could deliver a personal performance such as this. Also, what a brave performance this is.
Thank you for sharing it with us ❤
@@sprickenville eh music is art and the beauty of art is very subjective so you can't really decree a performance average. If you didn't like it thats fine, I also prefer some of his other recordings (both the one with the seattle symphony and even his 2012 with the swedish radio symphony) but just because you didn't like it doesn't make it an average performance in an absolute sense, some people might connect more with this performance and that's ok.
@@sprickenville hes not getting a free ride. Each performance he gives he will have people who appreciate it and people who criticise it because as I said music is not objective. He makes no objective mistakes here that justify calling it a poor performance, his intonation is fine and he plays the right notes, everything after that is subject to the listeners taste, such is the nature of art. It is by far not my favourite performance of his, but that will not be the case for all listeners.
Commenting as someone who is not familiar with the intricacies of this music, I can relate to your overall idea of an artist making a piece of well known music their own.
Technically, an artist like Ray Chen is covering a piece of music written by someone else. Much like many vocalists do and the best of them transcend the original and in the process make it their own.
An example of this within popular music is Linda Ronstadt's extraordinary ability to interpret a song, she has covered, and in the process make it her own. Songs like Blue Bayou, Desperado, and countless others. I enjoyed Ray's interpretation of this piece. I look forward to educating myself on this genre of music so I can learn to more comprehensively appreciate it.
I was thinking about the same, for me was also the performance where Ray breaks the E-string sweater. At this performance it feels to me that Ray wants to much from Tchaik.
Can’t stop watching… 👏🏻❤️👏🏻❤️👏🏻
Rock artist! Give him prop!! Good job on playing with a very DIFFERENT interpretation.
That cadenza took my breath away. Crazy! After such long concerto he has the energy for another long piece. He’s amazing! Sharing his love with everyone, that’s all that matter! To give is more blessed than to receive.
Great performance
Stunning
i was panicking when Ray's Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto hide from my playlist a while ago, then i found this
i almost hung myself having to wait so long for that ad to finish! 5 whole second!
This was a really enjoyable program
The beginning of Ray's Tchaik is so sweet and yet powerful I can't!!!!
Bravo Bravo Bravo!
Was there that day, it was so viseral and beautiful...
Rach 2 was sooo goood, if only I was there in-person!!!
Go Ray! Thanks for these precious 🎶moments.
BEAUTIFUL SOUNDS OF THE RACHMANINOFF 2ND......SUPERB ORCHESTRA WITH SUPERB PRINCIPAL PLAYERS.....
The biggest problem with this violin concerto is that the audience can't resist themselves from their clapping after the first movement. It's always full of emotions that burst into the concert hall! Anywhere, anytime, there's no one who can stop themselves from clapping.
Thank you for sharing 🎉🎉🎉
Ray is my favorite soloist is swear😭
Best soloist of all time!
Watching this live was amazing. ❤
thankyou so much
He is just on another level...
Yes, but unfortunately that isn't a compliment.
@@makers_lab you jealous prick
That was magnificent! Love the nerdtastic comparative analysis between Tchaikovsky's violin concerto, Ray's life journey...and video games of 3rd person to 1st person. (--______--)!!!!
What a performance~~!! Regarding Rachmaninoff symphony no.2, the highlight 3rd movement was really beautiful~~! The chemistry between the conductor and the orchestra is just great~~! Tchaikovsky Violin concerto with Ray Chen is also top tier~~!
He is absolute the best 😄😄👍👍
Superb! What a treat from the phenomenal Ray Chen! Amazing orchestra as well.
Didn’t break a string this time…

The Second Movement is Fantastic!!!
Definitely a performance reminiscent of the old school.....Huberman rings a bell....really like the search for interpretation and meaning ....so many new trends in performance...nice to see new styles on the block.
I don't know... I prefer the way he played just a few years ago. It had all the bits I love about his playing but was a lot less aggressive. In this performance I hear a lot of noise. Every player has little cracks high up on the G string occasionally and E string whistles happen all the time but in this performance little mishaps happened so frequently I was just again and again thinking "oh there, another one". Like scratching from pressing too hard or a run not being quite clean. It was like he was trying to raise the intensity higher than the Instrument allowed him to. I often find it quite disturbing when there are tiny breaks between the penultimate note of a run and the final one. That was also something I could hear a few times in the first movement. But that is probably just me, someone else might think that that brings out the importance of the highest note more. On the bright side though: I love his interpretation. The way he plays with time is just perfect for me. He does things quite his own way when it comes to this piece and I am a big fan of it. The third movement especially is just so energetic. If it wasn't for the things I mentioned at the start I'd have absolutely nothing to complain about. And don't come at me.. I know I will never be able to play this well and I'm just some potato in the crowd and he is a world class soloist. This is just my opinion and I felt like sharing it. :)
I agree with you, I noticed the cracking sound so often and was distracted wondering if it’s recording issue. A real fan refuses to admit it was him hahaha. I also prefer previous playing
@@rolinlu I was at the Thursday night concert and I agree, there was quite an intensity that I heard more than usual. With that a lot more cracking as well. He definitely has taken a much more aggressive approach to the interpretation, but still quite enjoyable.
You're spot on, I totally agree with you!
He plays Heifetz's old Dolphin strad now, right? The violin itself perhaps is way more suited to a more lithe touch... the violin seems to be squealing under Ray's hands.
Not to say Ray isn't super skilled. But I think he needs to be playing a violin that can handle that type of aggression...
@@seankim7333 Yeah! Isn't it the Guarneri's that can generally handle his type of playing better? But if he played one he'd probably just smash even harder. I think he does this on purpose to be honest.
everyone’s talking about Ray’s Tchaik but MSO’s Rach is so good 😭
Wow an powerful interpretation
It’s the up bows for me…pure magic!
I didn't realize that I just watched the whole thing
Thankyou for a great concert. I particularly enjoyed the Rachmaninoff, with some superb sounds coming from Messrs Szabo and Busbee.
indeed!
Go Dale!!!! ❤
it's beautfuul
A great concert with superb performances by soloist and orchestra of some wonderful music. When posting TH-cam video, it would be helpful if breaks could be added so that rewatchers and new watchers can skip through to particular parts they are interested in, and if the intro filler could be removed.
How can he be a TH-camr and a concert violinist at the same time 😂
That is where I first encountered him... unaware of his accomplishments as a violinist. I thought he was just an engaging person trying to find a way to make a bug on TH-cam... then came to a couple of his performances and did a bit of research. He is a delight... though I still prefer Janine Jansen's work with a violin.
❤❤❤❤❤
😊好喜歡看陳鋭非常認真拉琴模樣,認真的男人最帥🤗㊗️🧧🍊🥰
Not sure where the microphone is placed for this recording, but I bet the sound Tchaik was amazing in the back of the hall
Damn that thumbnail 👀👏🏻
51:12 On Ray"s left: David Oistrakh. On Ray's right: Tchaikovsky XD
The guy on the right looks more like Walter White lol
He seems to have gone for a more "rough" interpretation here
Yeah… it also feels too much and feels like the music has holes in it

Same 🙃. And a smile at the end cuz I know I messed the whole piece up 😂

1:04:23 - 1:04:26 First violin’s view to Ray
This concert should be named Shang-Tsung x Violin
I love Ray Chen, but I prefer his older interpretations. Idk, those just seemed more humble, consistent, and flowing. This one has too many crunches/gaps, too inconsistent in the playing by means of unnecessary flares added so the musical stream seems to have interruptions, and just seems not effortless and and too much 🙃No doubt that Ray Chen plays with admirable confidence and great technique, and I greatly respect that, but this performance was not really my favorite.

How does he do this? He shows no signs of nervousness. Id be nervous even if i was playing a seitz concerto
Can’t deny Ray is one of the top violinists; unfortunately, I don’t feel the connection and flow between phases in this performance. Sorry Ray. 😢
Being able to play an instrument well does not make you a good musician. One must study theory to be a good musician, and not see all the phrases in isolation. Isaac Stern and Yuja Wang are good musicians, Ray’s just a show pony. I actually think he is more of an entertainer than an artist. Did you see him swaying his hips? Does he think his Elvis?
For a long time ray has been really great artist. It sounds like quite different interpretation of his previous plays. But I have no doubt that Ray has super talent.

WHAT does this presentation have to do with violinist Ray Chen???? WHY are so many commenting on Ray Chen instead of the topic presented here?
Ray is the celebrity admired by most…so he is naturally the focus of conversation. These days performers have it hard being compared and sometimes criticised. As the artists they are, we can look towards the enjoyment of what they present as a whole ..,being human is part of the magic…i have no doubt someone could come up with an AI and hologram playing super perfectly…imperfections are to be appreciated 😉🌏
Much like violins, master handmade violins…each one is individual and perfect in its imperfections
