That's what I always wished Reverse Flash embodied in the show. Their relationship is deeper than love and hate, their rivalry is a paradox, tormenting the Flash gives meaning to Reverse Flash, and undoing the damage RF causes gives meaning to the Flash. Without each other, they are both no one.
I strongly disliked this decision. It takes away the pathos of his comics origin: Thawne idolized the Flash. He spent his family fortune replicating the accident that created the Flash's powers. The first thing he did was use the Cosmic Treadmill (a device Barry Allen created that helped him travel in time) to go back to the opening day of the Flash Museum (he knew exactly what time Flash would be there because the commemorative plaque was still on the building in his era). He wanted to tell his hero about his plan to continue the Flash's legacy as the Flash of the 25th century. Unfortunately, he arrived several years later than he intended, mentally confused by the trip. He staggered into the museum and walked into the Rogues' Gallery, the displays about the Flash's foes. The central display commemorated his greatest nemesis, the one opponent he was forced to kill in order to stop him: the Reverse-Flash, a.k.a time traveler Eobard Thawne. In the comics, the realization that his greatest hero was fated to kill him caused Thawne to have a psychotic break, curdling his obsessive love for Allen into an obsessive hatred.

Reverse flash is a living paradox, that's why he is stuck with his rage: because he can't move on. The story will end with Barry resolving that paradox, making reverse flash finally erasable by thé flow of Time. Returning eobard thawne as a nice Guy who Never became reverse flash.

It was more than just stealing glory. I think in one version thawne was angry and wanted to kill the people who hurt/ killed a relative(father if i remember right) but barry stoped him because it was wrong and then he found out he was supposed to be the reverse flash.

And when building it, he rigged it to explode, so the flash could be born sooner than expected. So there was a particle accelerator, it just exploded way earlier than it was supposed to due to Thawne wanting to get back to his timeline.
They should have added that Thawne was his biggest fan that he idolized him wanted to be him. That he used all his wealth to replicate the accident that made him. That he succeeded and trained to be a hero, but on the day he is talking about it he is overwhelmed by the bad guys and either accidently kills somebody for lack of knowledge or comes close. Then the Flash comes in and saves the day and it's his first time meeting his hero, and Barry treats him very coldly and chastised him wanting him to stop, or to put Thawne in jail for his mistakes.

Flashforward into the future and Thawne is the cheerful, fulfilled curator of the Flash museum, living a happy life and having a healthy relationship.
I feel like since the show pointed out Barry knows this now, he will prevent it so reverse flash ends up as an ally instead of a villain. Considering the final season is about to start, I can see it being a story thread near the end.
I was considering this and wrote my reply in an earlier comment too. My guess is that Eobard (in the future) may be too consumed in his anger for not being in the spotlight that even Barry couldn't pacify him. Barry would know too that he'll risk erasing himself from being the Flash if Eobard becomes good, and thus no one to kill Barry's mother or creates the accelerate particles in 2014. So it'd make sense to have a loop where Eobard doesn't see the error of his ways and still pursues the story that we've known all along.

I loved the armageddon episode, but hated this moment, because 'ot only does it contradict the comics but it also contradicts the confrontation between Eboard and Barry in S2 ... Eobard idolized Barry, he wanted to become the flash, but it's only when he traveled back in time, in the hopes of learning more about his hero, that he discovered *he* was the reverse flash, the biggest adversary the flash would ever encounter, and so, upon discovering this, he did his best to become the best nemesis he could
