What you called the PTO under the winch is what you use to start the engine with using the starting handle you said was the handle for the jack. That is a beautiful landie and I want it. Take care of it and enjoy.
I bought a a 1956 Series 1(Reg XKO 120) in the late 1960's to learn to drive, I passed my test in it though being winter (and with no door tops) I'm sure the examiner was pleased once the test was over. With hindsight it was probably the best Land Rover I ever owned (certainly the most reliable). I stuck with the LR marque for another 49 years up to the TD5 Discovery which was brilliant when it wasn't broken down (most of the time). Nowadays I wouldn't accept a Landy as a gift. Excellent video and brought back many happy memories!
Double de clutch on the downshift, you'll pick it up quite quickly. Defender rims look the same to the casual observer, but are wider and have a better offset for filling the arches, and will give many possible tyre options without taking away the classic look, particularly if painted bronze green to match.
Double de clutch, that is, put the clutch peddle in, move the gear stick to the neutral position, let the clutch peddle out and at the same time give the accelerator a quick blip, put the clutch pedal back in and shift the gear stick into the required gear, let the clutch out. Should work a treat. Don't keep shifting without doing that because that horrible crunching noise will turn into horrible and expensive damage.
Doc. Glad you're sticking to the original body work. There was a programme on Quest channel last night with Drew Pritchard were he took their land rover steering wheel to be restored. Interesting process and worth doing.
One good thing about driving with the top off is that you feel that you are going much faster, so there is no thought that you are crawling along at 40 MPH, but do not drive with the windscreen folded down without it being latched, that may seem obvious as the wind will slam it back upright with huge force, the metal bracket between the two hanging ropes is to secure the spare wheel to the rear bulkhead. Chris B.
Looks absolutely fabulous!! I think the patina is very nice and adds to the rest of the character. I’ve been hoping to take the roof of on mine but wanted to see a video and make my mind up so thankyou!!!!
That Llama mat is actually a land rover prayer mat for when you break down! Search for Team Faff on here if you want to see series 1's with patina being used properly. Keep up the vids 👍
Love it, Learn to double de clutch and it will save a rebuild took me a while but dont let it crunch!! and the engine would be a 2 ltr petrol 2.25 came in Series II in late 58 or early 59 I think. Look at Lucas L588 glass lights to replace the indicators as they look better imho and they will match your side lights.
It's not a pto at the front, it's for jump starting. That's why your starting handle is about a foot shorter than a standard starting handle. Also, you should be double de-clutching on downshifts or you'll be needing a gearbox sooner rather than later. In terms of springs, spray then with chain-lube or some other thick penetrative lubricant. You'll probably find they're stiff due to the friction between the leaves. The small bracket on the bulkhead behind the seats is to secure a spare wheel.
Glad to hear you have come around to keeping it original and enjoying the fact that it shows the age, without looking bad, love it for what it is - rare, original and special😎👍 I maybe tempted to give that offside front wing a bit of wear, with some scotchbrite or similar, so it blends in with the rest of the vehicle, see what others think. I would double declutch on the downshifts as others have said.
You have got a real beauty most of the S ls that I see in South Africa have been modified with other engines like Ford V6 and had other mods so are not original or they have been driven to death. One upgrade I would suggest is to ugrade your swivel pin housings to the Sll or Slll with the Railco bush as the top bearing. Its a much better design. Practice your double de clutching or that gearbox will be an expensive history.
They started out 2ltr, then went to 2.25ltr. A couple of turns of rope around the winch, tension the free end to pull, slacken to let it slip, allows very fine control of the pull. We pulled out a hedge with the capstan on dad's 2a.
Great fun need to double clutch on down shifts lol 😝 bouncy springs but definitely need skinny high profile tyres to have any semblance of ride comfort- it sounds amazing and looks amazing but it’s your car so spray it yellow or grey if you want to after all your defender shows the cosmetic and mechanical enhancement benefits 🤘
You could always get some fine grade wet and dry paper and gently rub down any newly painted panels to give them a matching patina to the rest of the landy .
Hi Doc Hope you are well mate, what a great video. Love the old girl she looks great 👍 she just need the odd job doing on her. Like wheels leaf springs and sort some of the rust out underneath. Jobs a good un then 🚙👍👍
It could be that your stick is to be wedged onto the accelerator so that a higher engine rev can be maintained. I would suggest if someone has been using the winch or the PTO to run a machine.
Spectacular! As you say, keep it original whilst removing any rust and maybe change the springs/dampers. You are very lucky - just missing the dogs in the back.
Couple of small notes. I don't believe the seat material is factory, as well the chain guard isn't factory as the originals where 2 peices of material vs one long one. The single peice chain guards are better as they are quieter as you go along. The winch is used by looping a rope over the turret and applying tension to it, lots of videos about it. The shaft out of the side of the winch is for the starting handle only, not farm machinery. Lastly the steering wheel has a cover on it, and not factory. There are some nice ones on Ebay that fit nicely. Lastly wheels and tires, if you put 16" rims (from a 109 for example) you'll need to swap in a 109 speedo to keep the speedo accurate.
wooden thing looks like something to start the engine trough spinning the propeller of a plane (miniature or bigger) probably previous owner owned a plane?
Look for 1 tonne or 2b forward control wheels. You're missing the two stays on top of the windscreen that tie into the bonnet catches when folding the windcreen down.
The lil hole in the bumper with the twizzly bit is for a hand crank so u can start car when your starter motor goes poof, should of gotten a handle that slots in their
As per another comment if you double de clutch you allow the gears to mesh smoothly with no noises. You blip the throttle in between the change to align the internal speeds then it will just drop in. Once mastered you can do it without even thinking!
Definitely need to double-declutch, not good for the gears to allow it to crunch as you'll chip teeth. It's not that difficult, start by just treating neutral as a gear, so 3rd to neutral, then neutral to 2nd. A little throttle while you do it will help match the revs. You'll soon be doing it like second nature.
Your piece of wood is part of the jack handle. It would have had a mechanical screw type jack, to operate them it was wound with a long metal handle on one end there was a loop in to this you put your piece of wood to form the "T" of handle to wind up or down.
I'd suggest fitting the wider rims from a series 2 or 3 LWB. These will take 7.50" wide tyres such as an Avon Rangemaster all terrain tyre, a big improvement to what you have now yet still very much in keeping visually, to the extent that most people would not even think they were non-standard.
Is this for real……I am so happy more and more folks are enjoying Series LR, but honestly the nativity is staggering. I so do want to be negative, but honestly research your shit

That thing on the winch what you said was a pto is where the hand crank goes to start it as the winch covers up where it normally is

Wonderful. I have a 1957 also , identical to yours .Please just leave it as it is .

Only on a down change up change no revs

The Drew Pritchard programme is repeated again tonight. 10pm. 22/06/22. Series Land Rover restoration.. Channel 12 Freeview. Quest.

Love the stance of your S1....what tyres have you got on?

The little glass wind deflectors are called aero screens. A lot of older classic sports cars had them. 👍
Oh brilliant thanks !

Thanks- good idea to wear the panels a bit- seems a bit strange actually scratching the paint out but makes sense in this case!
I had a faux patina vinyl wrap put on my new wing.

Looking great Doc!
The wooden item is for putting into the jack handle to assist in turning it.

I use a quad lock 👌🏻👌🏻

Great knowledge J e thanks! Will take a look at those steering wheel covers 👌🏻👌🏻
Try taking the spare off the bonnet and your screen may well be a wind deflector, used to work well on my lightweight 👍
Nice idea thanks
Doc, that looks very rugged and handsome. A bit wider tire and wheel will look good. Stick with steelies though.
Goodyear makes a Wrangler Duratrac tire that has a tread pattern that would look good. Just be sure to turn any white side wall lettering inwards.
Cheers Jerry will check them

Great content…..very inspiring! I’m on the search👍👍

Put series 2a 109” wheels on it. It’ll look original but they’re a bit wider. Pretty sure they do fit
Yep…
The hook in the back is for a spare wheel 🛞 😅
The small wooden stick is for a jack.
How can you not double shuffle?! 😭
need to learn!
@@thedoctorsgarage it is like riding a bike... it becomes second nature.
I learned to drive in a landie, no synchro on first and second 😊
😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
👌🏻👌🏻
Being a series one its should be a 2 litre not a 2.25 litre which came in with the series 2 in 58 59
That bit by the winch is a POT shaft agin I’m no farmer lol but going to agriculture
PTO shaft.
PTO for Power Take Off. I’ve heard of various implements that can be hooked up to that, like a Post Hole Digger.
@@martinbradshaw692 I gotta learn a lot lol, including learning to spell

double de clutch pls!

Double declutch 1st to 2nd to 1st.
My series 2 hard top is not drivable in Turkey summer , so hot
It was hot enough here for about a day😂

Sell the machine to me please?

I puke everytime he calls it a "car"

i have long landy
Landys are trucks... Car sounds soooo wrong 😅
That poor gear box double 1 2 gears if not all gears
