Thank you everyone for your comments, the feedback & also “suggestions” are super helpful!
I’ve played around with the stop lever, a heat gun, a hammer, cleaner, on, off & in between can on the lift pump, I’ve checked the filter on the injection pump & I have come to the conclusion of removing the pump for a better “inspection” - easier to work on it on the bench than in the bay.
Thanks all, you’re input is most welcome 🙏

As others have said, a good buy at £500, from what i could see in the video it looks like a CAV, DPA injection pump if it is the fuel control pin could be stuck in it's bore cutting the fuel supply (common on engines stood for a long time as the diesel goes gooey), normal way to clean is remove rectangular cover linkage underneath and pin/arm and clean with carb cleaner so pin free's, or rough & ready is warm the injection pump with haidryer or hot water (soften the diesel residue) try "tapping" with a soft mallet whilst hand priming (might need assistance for that) if it fails just some time lost so go to previous method.

    Well…
As a Landy owner myself, I appreciate the time and effort you put in sir, to bring the lady back to life ❤
Very sensible to use a brush instead of the more modern way of doin things with a pressure washer, since THAT modern tool could actually damage something underneath.
As far as the holes are concerned, I thing those could be a blessing in disguise, because that way you can rinse out the frame from the inside and get all the rust and grime OUT and new protection IN … just my Idea…
Looking forward for future episodes sir…

Good luck with this one. This will be an enjoyable project seeing you bring the old girl back to being road worthy. The beauty is that you just simply unbolt the panels if the bolts will let you. As they do have their issues with the good old rust mite, as you have already seen. The Diesel without a turbo is very un fast. We used to had the odd one left over when I joined the Army.
As for body work, they do tend to look better with that beaten up used look, matching panel colour would always be nice, but then you lose the character that has been there for decades.

I'm in Australia. My first "car" was a Series I Land Rover petrol. It was rather tired but it took me to all sorts of places. It had been used for beach fishing and as a result the crossmember under the gearbox was rather rusty. I moved up to a 1968 Series IIa and loved it. Subsequently I owned about 30 Land Rovers. Most were "spares" and I also bought several Range Rovers and other Rover products. That was a long time ago. At the present time I have a td5 Discovery for fun and a Subaru Outback for sensible things. I really wish I had a Series IIa "shorty" though. I had a diesel 2a which was economical but could not pull the skin of a custard. I miss it too. Mike in Oz

Nice video! I can say that there is a lot of work still coming up! I can say that from my experience. But it's also great fun to do. Now about this Land Rover. It seems not to be very original. From what I can see the doors are from a Defender and so is the rear tub as the rear lights are not close to each other as with a Series 3. But still the parts are easy to find, especially in your country. To get it better looking I would try ansd find original parts. So, enjoy it! Greetings from the Netherlands. Have a great time!

  • @renevanderest9200

The fuel tube in the tank has a stupid filter on it that when sliding upwards cuts of the flow to the entire system. Had that 2 times of which the first time took me a day to find out why the car would run and drive for short periods, the 2nd time took me a minute to figure that out. I just pushed the filter of the tube. Good luck with your nice project.

You know I think the biggest thing I notice about europeans doing car stuff is they never have tools. In the US you'll see drills and pressure washers and etc, but in the UK it seems like they are using their kitchen broom and a handful of randoms wrenches to work on their cars.

Nice find at that money . The Landrover itself is quite possibly a lot later than the K registration suggests . There,s more chance its an early 1980s model . Rear body is 1982 > / engine is a 5 mainbearing 2286cc diesel / its got servo brakes with the vacuum intake flap valve / all these point to it being an 82/83/84. Of course it could all have been changed in its lifetime . Many were put onto earlier V 5 logbooks to put them into the historic taxation class back in those days . Just be aware if you come to buy parts for it .

Hey, nice video ! One piece of advice for you: Change as many parts as you can to Spanish Land-Rover Santana parts, since these are a lot better than the OEM GB Land-Rover (Laro) parts. This truck dates from the era in which Laro did no longer want to invest in research and development of their Old models: the 109 and the 88; Series or not. In the late 60s they had developed the Range-Rover which had to replace the old 109 and the 88 and so the 109 and the 88 were models on their way out, never to be produced ever again, since the Range-Rover was to be their successor. Santana Laro in Spain however did not have the license to build the Range-Rover so the 109 and the 88 were their only models at the time Santana built under license. They did invest in improvement by research and development and so they changed out many OEM Biritish bad (inferior) parts and replaced them with much better parts from all over the place. In fact they started developing their own improved parts. Just like Santana developed a straight 6-cylinder Diesel, based up on their improved 2,5 liter 4 cyclinder. Also the Turbo was introduced, when in GB no Laro was available with Turbo to begin with.
So I'd say; Santana this Laro and build a truck that lasts instead of breaking down all the time, which is the credo of British made Laro's to begin with.

I primed the lift pump about 5 times fo make double she, then slackened off all the injector pipes and then just kept cranking with a good strong battery (or jumped off a running doner vehicle). Eventually fuel came through to the injectors (i don't think it helped with most of the seals on mine leaked). I've since had my pump rebuilt and it's like new again.

Mechanical stuff is a breeze, though the diesels are hateful. Personally I would stick a 200tdi in it but it's all down to what you want it for? Would I have another one? Definitely not! I love my Range Rovers too much and don't miss having a series 2 as my daily, cold in the Winter and hot in the Summer. Those hard tops make them so loud, I always kept a cab and canvas tilt on hand or just went topless during the Summer, much nicer to drive.... if you are a 5'4" Farmer with short arms and welded ankles?

Just to let you know it's got the wrong doors! can't take the door tops off in the summer when you want the roof off. The thing you called the steering lock was the shut off for the diesel pump (no electric solenoid and since diesel engines don't need an ignition to run you need to shut the fuel off) well worth having a look at, you can also just operate the stop arm on the pump itself before you bother taking the whole pump out!!

Hmm, 1972 plate but 1982 spec rear tub? Id be checking the numbers *very* carefully.

Wouldn't have expected that brake servo on a '72 either.

Good shout - I suppose though in 52 years a lot can change; things “bolt off” and then “bolt on” 😱
But all good observations - thanks for watching!

@retromechanic2238 It really is a mix, you're quite right they all unbolt, and perfectly legal to swap the entire body. The terracotta red paint on the engine shows it's post-1980. Lots of the identities swapped so they would be tax exempt, but ironically by now they would all be exempt anyway. Nice project, I've subbed and will be following 👍

Yes certainly appears to be an early1980s model with the 5 main Bearing engine and servo brakes too

I had one of those Series 3 Land Rovers in Costa Rica thank God the motor blew up what a piece of s*** spend more time working on it than driving it the motor was pretty good it's a Perkins Jackson motor in a Perkins in a Massey Ferguson tractor that's where I bought my farts half the price of trying to go through Land Rover

Bargain. I sold an old one for £500 before prices got stupid & it needed a chassis.
It’s amazing the stuff parked around the countryside.
There’s 2 decent David Brown tractors where you recovered the Landy from inc a 4wd. That’s worth money.
