How To Build a DIY Mobile BBQ Cart (With Bottle Opener)

  • BBQ season is well and truly here, so I fancy a BBQ, but mine is old and a bit wobbly. So I can do some safe grilling, I decided to cut mine up and make this mobile BBQ cart, with storage and a bottle opener. It's made from standard decking and pressure treated 4x2's.
    This was also a project to try out the evolution R255SMS saw, I wanted to see how good the angle cuts were, dust extraction , making trench cuts, and what sort of cut finish was left on the wood. I have to say, i'm extremely pleased with how the saw preformed, the dust collection though, could be better, for me using the saw outside, it's not a real issue. But I can imagine using it in a workshop it would disappoint you a little.

    Good job. Interesting to know what you did underneath to collect the dust. Also, I would suggest you install trolley wheels with locks. This will keep your cart level and you can lock your wheels.

    • @JamesManCave
      @JamesManCave  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the dust is collected in the bottom of my kettle BBQ, as it has fitted to it a removable tank for emptying the dust. The cart doesn't move at all, because the back legs are equal hight the the legs with the wheels added to them, and the weight of it holds it steady from moving back and forth

    Ive just finished me, shame I can’t add a pic! Thanks again for the inspiration to do this. My bbq was much bigger than yours so I had to use a lot more decking. I’m still amazed the wood doesn’t catch fire being so close to the bbq but maybe it’s because the decking is treated? It may also be December in Scotland, but I’m ready to bbq!

    • @JamesManCave
      @JamesManCave  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, no it wouldn't. I've been asked this a lot, it's only ever so slightly sitting on the wood, so it's not a huge deal of heat transfer

    • @JamesManCave
      @JamesManCave  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks. No I'm not, ive used the BBQ loads since I built it, the wood is in a great condition. If it had of left any burn marks I would have used some screws sticking out of the side of the hole to support the kettle 👍

  • @corradomeilach3247

  • @miket4685

    Thinking of doing the same. By the way, how’s the wood handling the heat of the grill?

    • @JamesManCave
      @JamesManCave  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Do it, it works an absolute treat! The wood is holding up fine. I expected some scorch marks, but last time I looked, there wasn't any at all

  • @MrFrankbee
    @MrFrankbee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Does the heat from the kettle burn the wood it's resting against? I see people putting metal between the wood and the kettle.

    • @JamesManCave
      @JamesManCave  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nope, not hand any burning what so ever. I think because I cut the hole out straight rather then tapered, the contact between the wood and kettle is minimal

    • @MrFrankbee
      @MrFrankbee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well that's good to know. I just made a cart from an old rot iron tea cart. I cut the wood the same way. I haven't had a problem yet but my circle needs to be improved. My drum sander attachment fell apart. Right now it's resting in just a few spots.

    • @JamesManCave
      @JamesManCave  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't see that being a problem only resting in a few spots, as long as it's stable it shouldn't matter, well done for making one though 👍

    • @JamesManCave

      @JamesManCave  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well as of yet I'm yet to drop/spill anything on it. But if I did I would leave it to dry in and then sand it out. I did coat it with some decking oil, which has helped it from the elements this far
