The Brisbane Lions; In my humble, unbiased opinion, are one of the greatest football clubs of the AFL era. And I don’t just say this because of their silverware. I say this Because of how the Brisbane Lions entire existence has been defined by them overcoming adversity. Winning 3 away grand finals in a row and almost winning a 4th (had they been able to score 41 more points), coming back from the dead after over a decade of Mediocrity and Fitzroy like hopelessness to become a Premiership contending and also choking beast. And how the Brisbane Lions went from an unwanted one-night stand baby, to successful club, in just a couple years. But when I think about Queensland footy overcoming adversity, I think about a football club that had to scratch and claw, just to get a license, I think about a football club that had to play their home games over an hour away from their home city in to be blunt, a shithole, who had drafted players straight up refuse to come play for them, who were inexplicably linked to one of Australia’s most notorious criminals. who’s mascot wasn’t even a bear. When I think about great underdog stories in our great game, I think about a small subtropical city, and The Brisbane Bears

I’m an American who has discovered this amazing sport last year. I’m a huge history fan, so learning about the trials and tribulations, the ups and downs of these teams are fascinating to me.

As a Cats fan in the early 90s, the Bears was my 2nd fav team mostly because of the Theme Parks that were close by in the Gold Coast that I really wanted to go to back when I was a kid.
So seeing the Bears struggle only to become a better team in 1995 was really good to see.
Despite the fact that the year earlier in 1994, I saw the Brisbane Bears defeat the Geelong Cats at Kardinia Park that was a bit of an embarrassment for the Cats.
But I can say without a doubt, that match in 94 was the first time the Bears really did prove they were capable of something special.

This club just played in one of the most beautiful amd exciting grand finals I've ever seen(I was at the 1989 GF so that that says something right there). The 2023 will go down as one of the greats...one of the very great VFL/AFL grand finals. Though the Lions didn't win....this grand final changed an often boring grand final procession, something we all get sick of(unless we follow the club doing the thumping)and the final result was under one goal. Brisbane indeed have returned to the top of the pile. Well done Fages and the boys.
I agree with you wholeheartedly about what happened to Fitzroy.
It's a disgrace that the AFL just stood there and watched as a foundation club that had been there since the begining and had done so much for the VFL/AFL.

In the Brisbane Bears' first 3 seasons, they won 6, 7, and 8 matches which are far better than what the Suns and GWS Giants did. I think it is a bit overstated how bad the Bears were. Lots of teams today win less than 6, 7, and 8 matches.

Great vid mate. I'm a Richmond supporter but we played Fitzroy in their last game in Melbourne. I was a member of the old Grog Squad back in those days and to see the sign of the distraught Fitzroy supporters was surreal, hurt us Richmond supporters as well as it wasn't that long before that we were just about broke as well. At the end of the game even though the Tigers got up by 100+ the Fitzroy Song was played over and over which was sung by everyone in the stadium, never hugged so many opposition supporters and it was like we were all one big team. The most emotional day I've been to. But anyway, great work on compiling this content, it's network worthy...
I was 16 when I watched Fitzroy's last game in Melbourne & that game was like watching a loved one die.
It took me a while to get back into the AFL & watching the flag in 2001 certainly helped & now I'm a Brisbane Lions fan.
@@insertnamehere5809 Mate the scenes of that day I can't put into words. Nobody wanted to leave the ground. We left about and hour and a half after the siren and it was still packed. Wish you well and hope Brisbane have a great year, the best list in the league so no excuses this year...

Very good doco. I was at Fitzroy's final game and, whilst I was happy to see my Dockers win, it was a bittersweet feeling. Of course, we went down in history as the last side to lose to Fitzroy and the also the last side to beat them.
Also, Paul Cronin is a national treasure
And Freo still among the clubs with 0 premierships.
If it wasn't for Robert Walls the Brisbane Lions wouldn't be a powerhouse in the early 2000s.

Geelong really have a history of utterly destroying clubs, they did serious damage to Brisbane, Melbourne, Richmond and Port Adelaide, all which took about 5 years each to fix

It's interesting to compare the Bears first 5 seasons with the Suns. The media was positive about the Gold Coast but critical of the Bears. Even though the Bears won a lot more games.

Ive said it before but that mccarthy mark vs geelong where we won by a point is one of my all time favourite memories. Growing up the lions were shit for all i could remember and that was a truly special moment.
Fitzroy Lions Wiki says that the Lions do still exist even if its only an amateur team and going on their website they still have links to Brisbane Lions and vice versa so technically they aren't dead but it is sad to see a founding member relegated to local league footy

That LS jumper the reserves premiers were wearing is ELITE. The BL need to have a club exclusive where they bring in LS versions of Brisbane Bears retro jumpers that have the sleeve designs & are made of modern playing jumper material & priced at no more than $100. Leave off the vfl/afl & sponsor badges & the club have a winner. The early Bears should be, both the dark maroon & the cerise versions.

Your Editing is unmatched in the AFL online space. You should post your highlights as shorts (apparently, they are more "visible") and you deserve all the visibility you can get with another 10/10 video like this. Fitzroy's players in mid 1986 voted in favour of moving lock, stop & barrel to Brisbane when the Lions were technically bankrupt & were looking to either merge with Melbourne or move to Brisbane.
So, the Brisbane Lions could have started in 1987, instead of 1997.
I went for the Bears as a 4 year old kindergarten kid but hated the merger with Fitzroy
