    Although I am (and always will be) a very proud Member and Supporter of my beloved Kangas, I really enjoyed watching The Brisbane Lions of this era in particular. Daring and Dashing Darryl White was one of my favourite Players, He had a freakish ability to make The (near on) Impossible, actually look quite possible, when He was shooting for Goal especially.

    Fascinating to learn about the reasons that led to the Mighty Roys leaving Brunswick St., which was the beginning of the end. As you correctly stated, they actually used to get big crowds there when they had good sides, same with Dogs at Western Oval. I'll always be bitter and disgusted about what they did to both South and Fitzroy...they were Stalinized to make way for tv teams...and our city has been dying ever since.
    Roys were very close fo winning in 83...would have made it nearly impossible to kill them off if they had have.

    0:22 The VFL poster on the screen is from the late 1970s early 1980s, just before South Melbourne relocated to Sydney.
    One of the few times when Teams had Logos and the VFL was a mostly Victorian based competition before the expansion into NSW and Queensland started as well as arranging Expansion Clubs with the SANFL and WAFL leagues.

    In 1996 the Brisbane Bears were not Broke they were a Powerhouse. They played in a Preliminary Final against the Premiers North Melbourne. In their first three seasons, the Bears won 6, 7, and 8 matches which are far better than the GWS and Suns' first three seasons.

      The Bears were never a powerhouse club, but towards the end of their existence, they started to come together as a decent team. This was bcos they had a good portion of the 3peat Lions playing for them.

      @@seewobble7048 Compare the Bears with the Suns and GWS in the first 3 Seasons. GWS won 3 games in 2 season and were praised by the media. The Bears won 21 in 3 years and were bagged and called the Bad News Bears. The Bears made the finals in their 9th season and won a flag in their 14th. This is the Suns 14th and I don't think they will be winning a GF anyone soon.

    1:15 The Gorillas logo wasn't really their official club Logo Shield as the Shield Logos would start in the mid 1970s when the VFL became a bigger and marketable competition within Victoria with Color TV being the big push.
    But if the Logo Shields were around back in the 1940s, this would have been the best interpretation of the Fitzroy Gorillas logo that they used to be known as back in the 1930s and 1940s before becoming the Lions in the 1950s.

  • @Muffin_Masher

    This kind of domination will probably never happen again, a LOT of the playing group resisted bigger offers from other teams, and these days the money they throw around is insane, it only leaves room for 1 or 2 stars per team unless the entire group is in it for the success instead of the money

  • @animerocksautistic

    I don't want to nitpick, but you should clarify that Bunton Snr never played a final, let alone a premiership for Fitzroy. His time was between the 1922 and 44 premierships.
    Also, I don't know if it would've changed the result but Anthony Rocca's suspension I felt cost us being a chance in the 2003 GF. Left a massive hole in the forward line.

      😅😅🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ no silly. What else are you going to offer 18-20 year olds to leave home and family go to a club on the other side of the country in a state where the game isn't well supported and travel that much for a club that was a marriage (experiment/first and only ever merge) of 2 failed clubs..gonna need more than pie and coke. Barely any revenue from membership, hardly had a gate over 20-25k. Plus an entire state (vic) willing your demise. Also how could the salary cap be that big if you had majority of your star players (and there was alot) volunteer for pay cuts to keep the side together. Good chat enjoy the season

    • @seewobble7048
      @seewobble7048 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And that would be why Victorians are seen as morons. The salary cap was to keep 2nd tier players so that Brisbane could field a team.
      The fact that you vics don't take Qld's particular circumstances into account but assume that just bcos you love Aussie rules then it will be massively popular everywhere else shows why the interstate clubs & fans keep calling out the vic bias in the league.
      The only ones putting an asterisk beside the 3peat Lions flags are the jealous flops whose clubs simply weren't good enough.

    The AFL's desire to have interstate teams win premierships had a lot to do with those premierships. Brisbane are the only team ever to have retention money in their salary cap to enable them to keep their best players. Their premierships need to have an asterix next to them to explain that favortism

    • @seewobble7048
      @seewobble7048 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The salary cap was to pay overs to keep 2nd tier players so that Brisbane could continue to field a team. When u don't play in a "football state" young players don't want to be there so paying them more than they're worth is the only option.

    The AFL decided to seriously develop a presence in SE QLD and that meant they needed a strong Brisbane Lions not a retirement camp Brisbane Bears. Everything was done to make this a success. They ended up with a playing list, especially the midfield, that would have been the envy of any club ever in history. Money and salary cap restrictions simply did not matter because success in SE QLD was all important. They had a ride on the umpires that would embarrass even the west coast eagles. The draw was done to their advantage with Melbourne clubs even having to play home games against Brisbane at the Gabba. Most Victorians copped it sweet when they started winning grand finals because they beat the likes of Collingwood and Essendon so the rest of us loved it and the fact it was a ridiculously lop sided playing field flew under the radar. They were hugely successful but in reality it was one of the most over rated success stories in sporting history. Compared to the achievement of Hawthorn winning three in a row or even the sustained success over 15 years achieved by Geelong Brisbane are over rated?
