Geelong in 2007 were one of the greatest teams of all time, so it was no disgrace for Port to lose heavily to them. But the manner of the defeat was risible. A margin similar to Essendon's win in 2000 (60 points) would have been a fair reflection of the actual difference between the two sides.

      From New Zealand
Port Pear haven't played in a Grand Final since and have never looked like playing in one.
      That sums it up.
      Give Ken another 5 years

As everyone knows, Port beat the Cats at home in round 21 that year. No one could have possibly imagined the bloodbath which was to come in the Granny. I actually felt bad for Port's supporters to have to witness that. They deserved better.

Ken Hinckley knew from his own experience as a Geelong player from the 90s.
When you are 10 Goals in front at half time, don't let the opposition back in.
There was a game in 1993 where Geelong were winning against West Coast by 7 Goals in Half Time, Geelong had the game won and half way through the 3rd quarter they were on their way to winning the match.
However the Eagles came back and won by 7 points in the end.
Geelong would give up big leads to either loose or almost loose the match all the way through 1993 and while they did improve and won their last 5 games of the season in convincing display of natural skill and awesome talent of the side Geelong were in the 90s, their early season losses meant they missed out on the finals by percentage, against the Eagles who were on the same win/loss but only in front by 3 to 4 goals difference.
The Cats of the 90s and the Geelong fans back then know that when you are in front at half time in any game, including Finals and Grand Final, you MAKE SURE you BURY the opposition in the 3rd Quarter.
Thus is the reason why Geelong won in 2022 against Sydney in much the same way.

Probably the most damage one game has ever had on a club. Absolutely ruined Port Adelaide. The greats of early 2000s such as the Cornes and Burgoyne brothers, Tredrea etc had their legacies permanently damaged and the young crop of players that propelled Port to the grand final were so scared that the few that ended up having solid careers took years to get back to the level they displayed in 2007.

Funny I can still remember waking up to that 2007 Grand Final, thinking it must be Geelong's time to finally win one after years waiting since 1963.
Saw the 1989 and 1992 Grand Finals on VHS tapes at my Grand Parents place back when I was a kid and saw the 1994 and 1995 disasters for the Cats on TV at the time when those games took place.
Also Port Adelaide who were only 11 seasons into the AFL competition since starting in 1997 after being 35 time champions in the SANFL since 1870 and when they won their 1st AFL Premiership in 2004 just 3 years earlier, I felt that it was going to be a tough game.
However in the space of just 2 to 3 hours of Football, not only had the Cats won their first Premiership since 1963 but they also smashed Port Adelaide by 119 points.
It was just a surprise how much they won and how badly it affected the club on the opposite side of that result.

Port Adelaide are the greatest team to follow, you never know what you're gonna get. It could be an absolute drubbing either way, it could be a nailbiter decided by under a goal, it could even be a 50 point margin at half time followed by a miraculous comeback/choke. I may have a head of grey hair at 19 but it's certainly a roller coaster I'm happy to ride

Geelong were simply incredible that day - everything they tried came off, they won every contest and Port players heads dropped. Williams should have switched to damage limitation in the third quarter, but he chose to keep going for it and Geelong took full advantage.

    • @Sids1192
      @Sids1192 ปีที่แล้ว

There's not really any reason for damage limitation in a grand final. Percentage doesn't matter. For the most part injuries and suspensions don't either. It's either a win or it isn't, so you have to keep trying to get the win.
Except of course when it comes to the public relations and psychological disasters of a historic loss.

Still convinced they were doping, they were just so much bigger, faster and more physical it was crazy. Not like everyone wasn't back then tbh. As testing got better players got a lot smaller.
Port Adelaide beat Geelong in round 19 when Geelong other than 3 losses in the first quarter of the season went undefeated until then. To beat them in Geelong and end their winning streak was amazing I was there, and we were pumped.
Then came the finals, Port played West Coast, it was a close first round but so what it was West Coast they had been solid all year. Geelong slapped Kangaroos and then Port slapped Kangaroos by a similar margin in the prelims. After Geelong narrowly beat Collingwood we were confident as fans that Port would get the job done or it would be a "close" game, it wasn't and Port's never been the same a team without any nerve. The next season was harsh too.

  • @kouta8796

This is one year where a team that made it the GF just legitimately wasn't suppose to... I might be biased here... but hear me out...I still think if Kerr plays in the Qualifying final against port Adelaide, Chris Judd isn't stuck in a forward pocket the whole game on one leg (Osteitis pubis) and Ben cousins doesn't pull his hamstring in the first quarter the eagles win that game, they only lost by 5 points I think... they'd go to a home Preliminary and probably play Geelong in GF and they would of put up alot better performance than Port.. the eagles were the reigning premiers that year and had their midfield absolutely desimated with injury leading into Finals... that qualifying final turned out to be last game Judd and cousins ever played for the eagles as Judd was not able to play in the overtime loss to Collingwood in the semi final the following week, along with Cousins and Kerr.

Port Adelaide deserved all the flak, jeering and embarrassment that they received after that Grand Final. I know we tend to be fairer to clubs that lose grand finals because they are so hard to get into, but a team losing a grand final by more than 100 points is a disgrace. You should never allow your team to be blown out of a game like that. When St. Kilda lost in the Grand Final Replay against Collingwood, they still fought hard in the last quarter to bring the margin down to something more respectable. I would say that most supporters would be more forgiving of a team getting smashed, if the margin indicates the team at least cared enough to try and win. The Power couldn't even do that for their fans. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it astonishes me that some people actually felt sorry for them. They deserve no sympathy! A 119 point loss is gutless!
I'm not a Power supporter, but I feel so much sympathy for them. Think of all those Port supporters/members that would have saved up their money and tried really hard to obtain GF tickets (particularly those who flew out or drove from South Australia to watch that game), only for them to show up to the game and watch the team to put up such a weak effort. I would even go as far as to say that the team's performance was so bad, that it was the equivalent of being spat in the face by the players. Such an insult to all their fans and members. I hope those players were ashamed, because they should've been. Especially considering how they played so valiantly against the LIons in 2004.
Credit where credit is due, Geelong played exceptionally well deserved the win. It must've been so satisfying for the Cats after all their GF losses in the 90's. They had an awesome team back then, even when you thought their period of premiership glory was coming to a end, they bounced back with a vengance in 2011.
