  • Promotional video put out by the Brisbane Bears halfway through their inaugural VFL season. Behind the scenes look at club's formation plus 1987 match highlights. Lots of spin but an amazing time capsule for footy historians. Worth it for the dazzling Carrara opening ceremony alone.

      @@mufc510 Mate, you still parroting that crap? There are only 195 sovereign countries recognised by the United Nations and there are plenty where football is nowhere near the No. 1 sport namely the US & Canada, the Caribbean Islands, Venezuela, the Pacific Islands, South Asia (the Indian subcontinent and Afghanistan), pockets of Europe towards the Arctic where ice hockey is dominant, the Phiippines (basketball), Australia, New Zealand you name it. I guarantee football will NEVER be the No. 1 sport in Australia as the other codes like Aussie Rules and rugby league are the dominant football codes in this country. To ask yourself why football isn't the main sport here is simple, to use the Starbucks analogy, they came here believing they could take over in Australia and why did they fail? Because Australians preferred the local content on offer.

Ross Oakley rejected the application & tried to merge Fitzroy & Melbourne in 1987. I don’t remember the name of the company but they ended up going out of business.

      Peter Kehoe yes the players all decided on it but we the last minute a company wanted to privately own the club which Sydney was at the time & West Coast & Brisbane where eventually but he rejected the offer & Fitzroy went on for 10 years with little or no hope from the AFL. Any plans that Fitzroy put in place to get any financial gain Ross Oakley blocked.

    They gave the license to the wrong consortium; had they given it to John Brown it wouldn't have been such a disaster by going to the Gold Coast.

    • @kurtflahavin5994
      @kurtflahavin5994 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually the VFL/AFL favored John Brown's consortium to start up the Brisbane Bears, but the VFL/AFL clubs preferred the Paul Cronin/QAFL consortium because Cronin promised that his consortium would pay more money for the licence fee to help the financially broke Melbourne clubs at the time which I think was over half of them. But after winning the licence Cronin and the QAFL initially had a lot of problems paying the licence fee upfront. That's when Christopher Skase stepped in and gave the money to buy the Brisbane Bears licence thus becoming the Brisbane Bears owner. The move to Carrara for the Bears home matches was basically a Skase decision because of course he was the owner, and he loved the Gold Coast more than Brisbane. The Gold Coast was Skase's plaything before he became a fugitive. In my opinion if John Brown's consortium was given the Brisbane Bears licence instead of Cronin's by the VFL/AFL despite the objections of the clubs, well I think Brisbane would've played their home matches at the Gabba, and would've gotten rid of the dog track at the Gabba much earlier too.

  • @TBoneTony
    @TBoneTony 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Obviously this video was made just after the Bear's first game or first year in the competition.
    North Melbourne was not a good team that year.
    By the year 1992, the Brisbane Bears was in such a disastrous state the Bears almost folded as fast as Fitzroy did during the early 90s and almost took out Sydney Swans in the process with the Private Ownership business model being a failure.
    Thankfully 1993 saw Brisbane Bears shift to the GABBA and moves to recruit players and give them proper training where they started to improve as a team.
    By 1995 the Brisbane Bears surprised everyone to make their first finals appearance.
    Funny enough, the year the Brisbane Bears enjoyed their most successful season in 1996, Fitzroy was struggling so bad they weren't going to survive the year.
    In came the Brisbane Bears to offer themselves up as a possible merger partner to Fitzroy Lions and after the approval from all other AFL club presidents, Fitzroy merged with Brisbane to become the Brisbane Lions in 1997 onwards.
    The Bears history was a short lived one, but without the club the entire 100 plus history of Fitzroy could have been lost forever.
    In 2001, 2002 and 2003, the Brisbane Lions won 3 Premierships in a row and achieved a Hat-Trick won by a team of champion players that were made up of former Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy Lions players, one such player called Alister Lynch played for BOTH Fitzroy and Brisbane before the merger before becoming part of the Premiership Hat-Trick team.
