- For those of us, who don’t possess the talent or the athleticism to make into a professional sport, Sport video games are as close as we’ll ever get to living out our fantasies of being on the big stage, kicking that goal, scoring that touchdown, hitting that 3 pointer, to win your team the championship game. We know the main ones are Madden, nba 2k, fifa, or EAFC whatever it’s called now. Some of the most popular sports in the world Garner the most demand and the most budget for video games. But what happens when your sport is a bit more Niche? What happens when your sport is played professionally in only one country. AFL fans and in particular, AFL fans who happen to be massive nerds, such as yours truly, have been crying out for an AFL video game from a big company like EA or 2K, it's been a long time dream of ours. And last year, it seemed like this dream was finally going to become a reality. AFL 23, had easily the most hype, the most budget, and the most promise of any AFL video game in history. And yet, as of recording this video on the 9th of January The player numbers on PC are in the single digits. So what the hell happened? Today we’re talking about the Bitterly disappointing downfall of AFL 23.

I’m in Texas so I was excited for a game to play. When I saw the price and all the glitches and crashes, I passed. Maybe a “realistic “ game isn’t possible so they someone should make an arcade game. Like NBA Jams or NFL Blitz.
Play Evo 2 and AFL 99, they are the best AFL games imo

Ross is not a good bloke at all, he trash talks peoples mums if they criticise him, he also threatens people. He is very up himself and he works with awful people like Twistie3. I knew the game would be terrible as AFL Live 1 was the worst game ever in AFL history. I will give him credit he has made good cricket games with DBC14 being amazing, Cricket 19 being great and Cricket 22 being average. He should just stick with cricket, give the license back to Wicked Witch even though they were mediocre they had been improving over the years and their CEO doesn't attack and threaten people over criticism and is actually a decent person and listened to me when I had a question even though I was very critical of the Wicked Witch games too. The only thing Big Ant have ever been good at are the graphics and the cut scenes other than that the game still doesn't even fully work properly after all the updates. The Xbox people got robbed, they promised a game mode and never delivered (I was actually heavily against the Ultimate Team but it was still a broken promise to anyone else) There is no way they released the wrong version of the game, that's just an excuse to how horrible it was because if they did release the wrong version they could have easily changed it to the correct version. Good job on not being scared and actually speaking your mind saying exactly what you think about the game. I have been trying to say the exact same things but because I am seen as the villain of the community no one listens. We need bigger AFL Community youtubers to actually speak the truth for once or else nothing good will ever happen. Shame on Twistie3 and Caden MacDonald for selling out, lying to their fans hyping the game up knowing how bad it really was. Wanna know why I don't like those 2 in the first place? that is why.

BigAnt legitimately revolutionised Cricket games in 2017.
Altering the camera to the behind view (when batting) was unlike any other previous Cricket game and made it a huge step up. There were some bugs, but with some patches and over subsequent versions it became a genuinely good game - not just a game you play because you feel like you have to support it.
Still haven’t brought this game, I probably won’t until the update comes out

The game is not fun, that's the issue, and its not fun because the controls suck and you can't even get a running game going. I hate fending off with the thumbstick, its not intuitive, there are too many different buttons you need to recognize and press in a microsecond. That's why previous games had several commands on the same button, just different actions depending if you have the ball or not, and they made sense.
I completely forgot that the game was sitting in my steam browser collecting dust until you mentioned it.

As a rugby union fan, I'm really hoping Big Ant pull through and deliver with Rugby 24 but between this and cricket 24, I'm expecting the worst.
March updates were pretty good but still.needs more game modes

Honestly is hard to decided whats more disappointing, the game itself or Ross's attitude and behaviour towards his loyal customers.
the video game industry sucks man, they overwork everyone involved because they’re too cheap to hire enough staff in the first place and then release unfinished games because they set unrealistic deadlines. Developers are encouraged to do overpromise to drive pre-orders and so every big release is a let-down.
Fifa, 2k, and the other major sports games have had decades of development going into them and they tried to launch this AFL game with all the same features as them straight up. I think they needed to start modestly or wait at least another year before releasing (but there were probably contracts with the AFL and distributors which prevented that).
i like this game more then Jarrod berry’s performance in the grand final.

Great video, mate. I've since got a refund on playstation 5, I bought it on day 1, being so keen for it. Some patches made it better then some other things would break. Glad I got a full refund now. I think I'd only buy it again if it was $40 Max.

To be honest myself. I don’t have much confidence in any of the updates for AFL 23 that will come this season.
In fact, the less than stellar launches of Cricket 24 and TieBreak along with the delays in Rugby 24 makes me think things are in serious trouble at Big Ant. To have one game come out with major issues is one thing, to have two come out with major issues is concerning, to have three come out with major issues is a trend and a pretty bad one to have.
I’m starting to honestly think that there are some serious issues going on behind the scenes at Big Ant right now and they’re not exactly inspiring my confidence right now. I’d love for them to prove me wrong, but I’ve got a pretty good feeling they will not I’m afraid.
This seems like a company in a spiraling downfall or being crunched by a parent company who just doesn't care... Reminds me a lot of the Motorsport Games mess that has happened over the past few years that has finally led to them losing all of their licenses and rumored at the moment to be close to be declaring bankruptcy...
Shame to see them fall so far down after their promising titles with AFL Live, Don Bradman Cricket and Rugby League Live 3.
That's the most disheartening things about this, they were legitimately good and did listen to feedback from fans when they did those games but now, they've done a complete 180... What the hell even happened here?
If they can turn it around, Awesome! I'll be very happy but hopefully if it doesn't work out with Big Ant, We've got someone else out there to pick up the pieces and hopefully make the AFL game we've been waiting for.
Until then, I guess I just gotta use Footy Fanatic FX to sim my fantasy Aussie Rules league.

I made a decent contribution in the build up on the AFL23 BigFooty thread - the most amazing thing was we were really the only ones who knew anything about the game at any given time. Pretty much any news about the game that got to the masses trickled out from the posts and comments of those threads. The behaviour of Ross' at times was pathetic given the state of the game and the good-faith already lost pre-release post-delay. He made it seem like we'd asked him to kill a child in wanting answers to basic questions such as what features the game would actually launch with and *when* the game was actually going to release, what time - this was never answered as far as I know, if it was it wasn't more than a couple hours before).
Got all the feedback he needed in those long, long weeks as to how public opinion would go once it actually dropped. To me the writing was on the wall when the only thing anyone wanted was just a simple gameplay preview - one quarter of the game actually being played outside of the press event on a near-release build of the game - was never given and treated as an unreasonable expectation for a game that was already meant to be released.

Big Ant Studio has a history of releasing buggy sport games. Sure they have a shoestring budget compared to other studios but it's always been the same issues from them. Their tennis games are slightly better (easier sport to code) however the Cricket games they make are also rubbish. The sad truth is there will never been a multi million dollar budget for a AFL game because it's a one country market and that's Australia - a small gaming market indeed.

AFL 23 was one of the most embarrassing failures in video game developing history. It's not just the fact that the game itself was a steaming pile of horse shit, but for Ross to act like a massive douche bag and asshole to anyone that dared question it was the icing on the cake. I bought it on release day and according to my steam profile I haven't played it since may 20, it's not even installed on my PC anymore. Disgraceful
The big problem was the rugby union and cricket games also promised in the same year should of just sticked to one
I got it on xbox in like November, I've been sort of enjoying it, obviously limited and still broken in some areas, looking forward to improvements, on fifa I only really manager mode, so I just want that to work well

This has given me zero confidence in Rugby 24 being any good. The weak excuse of delaying the game because of the disks not being in stores. Sounds similar to the recent Rugby 24 delay because they couldn't get all the player faces/content. It's not a real excuse and we have yet to see Rugby 24 gameplay or screenshots. But Ross can tweet months ago saying he is loving playing Rugby 24 in the office.
I mainly play it for career mode but considering you can't train your players or develop young players, no injuries or suspensions, it's literally just play the game then change the team line up thats it there's no depth to it. Plus no gameplay slider settings, still.
I still play AFL Live 2011... Id rather spend my own time updating the lists (as ive already done for 2024) then play AFL 23 unless it has major improvements

I remember after school going straight to EB games and getting it, I got the last disc and felt like the luckiest mf itw, got home and played it (or at least tried to) for 30 minutes, crashed about 7-8 times and I gave up and started watched live streams of other people crashing so I knew it wasn’t just a me problem, if only I had waited a day or they had been sold out I would be $100 richer and not have been put into a clinical depression from this god awful game

No player career mode, no mini games,little content, 0 news on Pro Team, it’s just rubbish
I think the most frustrating part wasn't Ross's refusal to answer fairly innocuous questions like "what modes will be in the game?" (and all these months later with modes like Pro Team still not in the game, despite making up the bulk of the launch trailer, we still don't have an answer for a game that came out 8 months ago), it wasn't acting like a completely unprofessional prat when it came to Wicked Witch or being questioned in general, but it was the rabid cult that defended everything Ross did or didn't do despite the evidence of an absolute disaster staring them in the face. Was some of the most bizarre shit I've ever seen.
Pretty sure he was banned by the BigFooty mods and Big Ant set up their own forums where questions about the game continue to be ignored.
Their excuse for how the game released was really baffling. This whole idea of a "wrong build" getting released is comical. And the craziest part is, they weren't the only ones pushing that narrative as certain content creators were saying similar things, that this wasn't the build they played when the game was shown off behind closed doors. Clearly that was a lie and this mythical build doesn't exist but the fact that they thought this was an excuse they could get away with is really something. Ross honestly comes off as a weird dude and this is just one thing in a list of things that he's said or done that just makes him appear off.
I feel really bad for the actual development team though. I mean look at their release schedule. They had to put out AFL 23, Cricket 24, and they've just had to push out a new Tennis game plus a Rugby game that's coming sometime this year. That's an absolute fucking death march, I can't imagine the crunch they're under.

Was on the Steam page at launch. That 100 dollar price tag made me recoil but i figured i'd give it a chance. If I remember right in addition to the dogshit gaemplay there were no stats in game, like you couldnt check the quarter by quarter score breakdowns or basic shit like disposals and goals. Played less than 2 hours so I could get a refund.
Thought maybe if the price drops or it improves through patches i'd grab it again but its still 100 fucking bucks.
