He's so flexible and have numerous patterns and devices he knows. The great thing about his playing is the absolute precision, emotion and he makes it look so easily. Truly one if the baddest cats around on tenor along with Rick Margitza and Chris Potter
A player doesnt have to play a tune or phrase that I know to get my approval. Its funny to watch audience. Joel could play anything and it has my approval. I get it that some gigs are very standard standards gigs though. Its cool, a gig with good players is a-gig with good players.
I'm just blown away by the rudeness of some people. Here's a great musician playing great music and he's called "tasteless and technical" by some narcissistic jerk who's in definite need of therapy. Whatever your name is, seek professional help. You may not like someone's playing, but to post your opinion in public, knowing that the person you're insulting will probably read your post... wow, you have a serious lack of empathy for other people. I'm impressed with the politeness of Joel's reply. What a nice person he must be, as well as a great player.
Thank you for speaking out here Scott. Joel is way to big in spirits to handle hecklers any other way- truly a gentle giant. The moments of music making I’ve shared with him still echo and resonate in me.
Totally agree...says more about the person commenting than Joel and his playing.. Joel should just ignore it and carry on doing what he does..being one of the best tenor players on the planet
This guy is great! I'm not a fan of most of his substitutions though, I think most of them in every video I've heard him play are pretty tasteless. My opinion should mean nothing to his approach though of course! If that's what he hears, so be it. I still dig it!
Having a Ferrari is an amazingly beautiful expensive and fast car, but some people missed the point about driving which is enjoying the journey taking in the sites enjoying the ride with emotional joy. A Ferrari can actually detract from the point of having it.
How about you just come out and say what you mean instead of couching it in a tired metaphor? Just come out and tell me you think it’s too technical; that it’s facile and soulless. You won’t be the first, but at least it won’t be passive aggressive.
@@saxnova too many notes. I find the sax playing disjointed, like he's just running through exercises. I put it in a metaphor in hopes that I could get my point across without being offensive and inspiring a violent retort, but I expect that you will reply with something negative; the very thing I was trying to avoid. I won't reply. I will say this though, he's certainly put his time in and is extremely proficient, which is admirable to say the least.
Oh, you're the sax player! It's definitely not soulless, I think you're a great player, my ear is just more attuned to Parker, stitt, Webster, I get bashed for this all the time, but I'm not a Coltrane fan. I never said he wasn't good, I just don't connect with what he's saying.
Joel Frahm is the absolute king of quoting things
Next to Dexter Gordon :)
Except when it comes to Paul Desmond.... clever quoting off the charts....
Oh my god the chorus he takes before the melody?! I think I’ve listened to it 100 times and it keeps getting better
Omg Joel Frahm 👌🏼The difference an appreciative audience can make for a scene btw.

Man these guys are KILLIN! I love Solazzos touch on keys
apparently just another day at the office??? Amazing playing..
He so fluid in them changes man. In any tune you hear him playing. The quote just make it more fun.
It's really great to watch great musicians, it's even better when the audience seems to be extremly attentive, respectful and fully enjoying !
I forgot I had Covid for a spell listening to this.
Yeah ....it will do that for you
Mark and Dave provide an excellent example of what, and when, not to play, giving the soloist the space he deserves...
Stellar playing!
Best tenor player on the planet...period!!!!!
Chris Potter has entered the chat.
sunstarv12 honestly tho they’re probably pretty close to each other in terms of “skill”. Hard to quantify that kind of thing
@@duncancofell8960 am a big fan of Potter too..both great players
Joel is my favorite living tenor man.
Me too
Same
Me too
Let’s say is one of them:)..too many to list. One thing I can say about Joel is that there’s nothing he cannot do on the saxophone..
@@Eged282 That's reasonable.
This was the night that I met you upstate guys, I had already known Joel Frahm for over thirty years.
So many things you can learn of that solo...
Boy I wish I could play with that much skill

Hey Mark. Popped over from the jazz forum. Sounds great!! 😁🎶🎸👍
Great all around, but gotta give some love to my man Joe Barna laying it down on the kit!
A master class of improvising.
Love Joel’s playing….just killing…

Terrific guitar solo. Innovative, not generic.
Wow who is he?
He's the best tenor player on the planet...that's who he is !!!!!
by the name of Joel Frahm
Couldn’t have hidden the drummer more if intended…
I dunno, they could have put a fence round him with a warning sign. Works in my band 😂😂

Is this the saxophonist Tom Scott of L.A. Express fame?
Tom Scott are you the famous sax player ?
Agreed. Highly skilled player, but lacking the natural feel to make the music actually SOUND pleasurable.
@@davidscott1052 no😂
@@leobrahmachari6611 I think you are very wrong....hes in the top echelon of tenor players in the world today
