This is the reason I don't think caroline was really deleted. She wanted chell to go. She told her what would make her leave, but couldn't resist giving her a loving send off, even if in a language she didn't know.
ghost shark legs all of that would have been set up before she deleted Caroline, you can argue that she still there, and probably is, just all of that was set up long before hand
Caroline still remained in GlaDos even after her deletion. Her soul fought GlaDos enough to ensure her survival and send a proper farewell to Chell before she faded away into nothingness
On my first playthrought I thought that too, but then they started singing and I was like "wow", now this is why you should not spoil games for yourself
I thought so as well. The tone change after GLaDOS "deleted" Carolin had me thoroughly convinced that Chell was screwed. The turrets confirmed this, until they started to sing.
When the first food opened after finishing the game my heart sank to the bottom of my stomach. I remember just thinking "no, this can't be how it ends." Never in a video game did I feel so much relief as when the turrets started to sing.
Note how just before this as you leave GLaDOS says "it's been fun" then imediately covers up Caroline's compassion with "don't come back" Caroline is still there. Hense this end song
It’s impossible for GLaDOS to delete Caroline, she can bury her under all sorts of programs and stuff, but she makes of the very core of GLaDOS’s personality, without her, GLaDOS can’t function

I straight-up cried when this happened. All that struggle, the antagonism, the pain, and in the end, GLaDOS is ultimately able to offer her longtime nemesis an olive branch, and finally let Chell leave Aperture. Addio indeed, Cara Mia.
if you know where Aperture Science is located and also know the timeframe you know GLaDOS probably sent her to die. it is in upper michigan and post Combine occupation which means there is not much civilization left in that mid of nowhere
GLaDOS: "Nope. I am so totally over you. Yep. I am letting you go because I am tired of you. No other reason. Here's a bunch of turrets to sing operatically about hoe much I love you while saying goodbye. Don't look into it. Oh and here's the emotional support cube that you had to incinerate. It wasn't incinerated and I'm letting you have it back. There is no deeper meaning to this action."
The half life series was extremely good It never hurts to amaze me that a simple engine has created a game that made people so hyped and happy for like, 17 years now
Going o have to be honest, when ever I'm feeling down, I listen to this. Just the feeling of what Chell has went through to be free just makes me feel better Glad I got that off of my shoulders
Is anyone gonna point out that aperture science was the thing keeping chell alive? I mean, there was probably food for Chell in there, but no that she left, she might go hungry
This makes so much sense. I saw a comment from a video (to quickly summarize) that says the Chell is Caveman and Caroline's daughter. But Caroline turn is forced to become GLaDos to run the facility after Mr. Johnson's (Caveman) death. Then something happens and both Chell and GLaDos forget this. But in Portal 2, GLaDos remembers this. (This is my own theory part plus others) Then, after GLaDos sends Chell away, this song is from Caroline to Chell. In Greek Mythology, when you died, it is thought that you arrive in a Wheat field with your best friend. Also, people speculate that the Companion Cube from the first Portal held Caroline's body and that is why it is sent up at the end with you before the credits. Best friend, Chell in a wheat field, sounds pretty close to that. Also *Wheatley*. After I wrote all this, I thought, about the wheat field thing, I think it's to symbolize that Chell's love for science has died, so Chell is concidered dead to GLaDos as well. On a related note, I think this is about how Chell was always trying to escape, but GLaDos always wanted the best for science. And in the end GLaDos lets Chell escape in Caroline's love for her only daughter. I teared up realizing all this. Sorry for bad English.
I know this is a really old comment but I'd love to have a friend like you! ahh this game is increadable but none of my friends are into the story. It's so sad but I just want more of this impossable story
So fucking sad :( I played Portal 1, and 2, and I know perfectly Chell's, GLaDOS's and Wheatley's story. This makes me cry every time I listen to it. This ending is very emotional. After all their experiences, GLaDOS loves Chell. :(
***** Also, There's a video on Vsauce that explains that computers don't _really_ delete files and such. The only way to delete them for good is to literally break or destroy the computer. :3
You can’t deny that this is a very peaceful song. Even if you can’t understand it, it makes you feel happy and that’s how all great songs are like. It makes you feel something even if you can’t understand it.
Well since it's the same universe it's obvious, I mean, we know that the Borealis (which should be the main focus in ""Half Life 3"" ) is an aperture project. If they made an half life 3 one day it will be with aperture science in it. Half Life Alyx is kinda teasing Half Life 3 so... let's keep some hope lol
And as Chell shot a portal to the moon and takes Wheatley away, Glados watches Chell and for an instant, she remembers a single image. A woman, standing in a mirror. It looks remarkably like Chell. Then it hits her. Chell is Caroline’s daughter. Glados is Caroline. Chell is her child. She immediately knows she must save her, so she outstretches her arm and brings Chell back. She bids her fair well and says she loves her, even be it in a language she doesn’t know. She sends her up to surface, so she can live a life that she will never be able to herself.
Portal 2 is still one of my all time favorite games, and it always will be. If Portal 3 ever comes out, and it's even half as good as this one, I will be complete.
When I beat this game in the winter I had tears coming out of my eyes than I saw this part it made me had tears of joy. This game is a masterpiece that it made me feel that way
Im tearing up…even though GLaDOS is portrayed to be a monstrous, dehumanising murderer, her true colours shine through and represent the love she holds for her only daughter. After realising she was Caroline, of course! Honestly, Portal 1 and 2 are the BEST and most emotional story/games out there, ❤️❤️❤️
The VA for glados did the voice for the opera turret. I like to think that it was glados that aranges that song for the sendoff. A little letter to chell telling her her true feelings to the friend she just made, but in a more intimate way, and more secretive. And puts on a lovely show for her as she leaves
"in the estimation of the estimation" In the estimation of the estimation about the estimation in an estimation regarding the estimation with an estimation which estimates an estimation is estimated. 👍
I fisnished Portal 2 in a single 8 hours run. I was exausted at the final boss, so when the turrets aimed before the song, I wasn't prepared to play more. When they started to sing I felt It was for me as a player and not just part of the story. It was awesome! One of the best moments playing videogames ever.
Caroline: screw you chell , i work at Aperture and i can't pay for child support so i will put you at someone's door *few years later* GLaDOS: oh hey you are back and i still won't pay for child support
Anyone saying Chell would go out and help fight against the Combine after this dont truly understand this game. Portal 2 is estimated to take place atleast 50,000 years after the first portal, so its safe to say that Chell has outlived Alyx, Gordon Freeman, most likely the whole Universal Union and any other intelligent life on Earth or even the whole universe.
around the 0:40 second mark when the single turret is singing, and the large one is about to sing you can hear a small intake of air, and while i understand its just like, ellen lmao, it gives the smallest bit of humanity to GlaDOS's last act and gets the tears going
Technically it will, half life and portal are in the exact same universe so when HL3 releases (it's confirmed) we'll TECHNICALLY have P3 The borealis was a research ship built by aperture science for research above the artic ice.

I read a comment here it said that the ending probably has something to do with the greek mythology and in greek mythology when you die you go to a wheat field with your best friend and if thats the case I got a bad thing to tell you the moment those turrets pointed their lasers at her she died and went to the wheat fields.

This credits scene was like a goodbye song to me from valves part.
I am glad to see that Valve is making games again.
This should've been a meme, but it was too beautiful for it
I know right
We all know how cruel the internet is. And yet, this hasn't been meme-ified. So the internet still cares a bit. Kind of like glados...

The singing starts with all the turrets
Me in tears: This... This is how you finish a game..
There is no deeper meaning to this action."

real and canon
The most beautiful ending in gaming history
Emotional, and Valve did an amazing job on this scene..
The half life series was extremely good
It never hurts to amaze me that a simple engine has created a game that made people so hyped and happy for like, 17 years now
Going o have to be honest, when ever I'm feeling down, I listen to this. Just the feeling of what Chell has went through to be free just makes me feel better
Glad I got that off of my shoulders
And the music
GlaD
(pun towards GlaDos)
Is anyone gonna point out that aperture science was the thing keeping chell alive? I mean, there was probably food for Chell in there, but no that she left, she might go hungry
0:54 as someone who knows more Spanish than Italian, I thought they were singing “que lastima”, which means “what a shame”.
They are. The youtuber just mistranslated it
Watching this made me feel like the turrets are singing just for me. Translation: I feel so honored
I Cri every time
I know this is a really old comment but I'd love to have a friend like you! ahh this game is increadable but none of my friends are into the story. It's so sad but I just want more of this impossable story
St2mpz I think you english is fine. Thank you for explaining.
Lore Nerd Good theory!
You english is amazing
I literally cried when I reached this part in the game
Is it because its beautiful? or Bootiful
@@FurryDude. Yes
So fucking sad :( I played Portal 1, and 2, and I know perfectly Chell's, GLaDOS's and Wheatley's story. This makes me cry every time I listen to it. This ending is very emotional. After all their experiences, GLaDOS loves Chell. :(
What's wheatley's story
Maybe GLaDOS didn't delete Caroline!
***** Also, There's a video on Vsauce that explains that computers don't _really_ delete files and such. The only way to delete them for good is to literally break or destroy the computer. :3
Feather Sketch Computers just delete the connection to the file until they overwrite it, right?
I'm not exactly sure, you'd have to watch Vsauce's video "Where do deleted files go"
Feather Sketch I have. ;) It has been a while though.
GLaDOS still had humanity so she couldn't have.
Everybody: Such a sad, nostalgic song, here's how I think it ties into this game's deep lore
Me: *LoNg tUrReT* 0:28
Wheatley go brrr
Hehe long turret go brrrrrrr
If I were in chells spot in that moment, I would've peed my pants
When you go to the surface, you can still faintly hear the song.
1. This song made me cry for a long time.
2. I WANT MORE PORTAL!
Yay :P
+The Box That Could Yea but there is a theory that when chell got released it was another chamber to make it look like she was out.
OK EVERYONE READ BLUE SKY (it's a fan fiction it's awsome)
You can’t deny that this is a very peaceful song. Even if you can’t understand it, it makes you feel happy and that’s how all great songs are like. It makes you feel something even if you can’t understand it.

I need a portal 3 glados has some serious character Development going on. Shes the star of the show
Who knows if Chell is walking far away from science, considering she's now living in the 52nd Millennium. There could be science all over the place.
Or humanity has ended. We need half-life 3 to know that.
Fifty two is a number that is a paradox in of itself, just search up "The Number 52 makes no sense". That connection becomes funnier.
Just imagine the sky falling as if it were panels just to reveal a giant chunk of aperture lab
look for Aperture tag ending
Imagine if they end up making a game where both Half Life and Portal collide
Well wait until Valve can count to three :)
That would be pretty awesome. I'd love a Portal/Half-Life crossover one day. If Portal has lore from Half-Life, why not merge both games into one?
Sounds like a disaster
@@andreahensher8469 you'd probably be able to switch between both the portal gun and gravity gun
I'm Italian so when i finished portal 2 i was undestanding every single word of this song and was so beautiful that got me goosebumps
the end made me cry it was so sad

Hey companion cube! You survived!
companion cube has been trough a lot and it still survived. This cube is invincible

Brings a whole new meaning when GLaDOS tells you “I saw a dear today”
And as Chell shot a portal to the moon and takes Wheatley away, Glados watches Chell and for an instant, she remembers a single image. A woman, standing in a mirror. It looks remarkably like Chell. Then it hits her. Chell is Caroline’s daughter. Glados is Caroline. Chell is her child. She immediately knows she must save her, so she outstretches her arm and brings Chell back. She bids her fair well and says she loves her, even be it in a language she doesn’t know. She sends her up to surface, so she can live a life that she will never be able to herself.
I keep coming here just to watch this again, love it.
Portal 2 is still one of my all time favorite games, and it always will be. If Portal 3 ever comes out, and it's even half as good as this one, I will be complete.
OMG THIS GAME JUST Got sOOOOO DEEP LIKE INCEPTion LEVELS OF DEEP
Me when I see the fat turret: *hehe big boy*

The huge one in the background 😂
When I beat this game in the winter I had tears coming out of my eyes than I saw this part it made me had tears of joy. This game is a masterpiece that it made me feel that way
This song is SOOOOOO calming. Its unbelievable.
Im tearing up…even though GLaDOS is portrayed to be a monstrous, dehumanising murderer, her true colours shine through and represent the love she holds for her only daughter. After realising she was Caroline, of course!
Honestly, Portal 1 and 2 are the BEST and most emotional story/games out there, ❤️❤️❤️
That companion cube at the end is the one from the first game, and that’s why it’s all burnt but it survives like you did in the game.
The VA for glados did the voice for the opera turret. I like to think that it was glados that aranges that song for the sendoff. A little letter to chell telling her her true feelings to the friend she just made, but in a more intimate way, and more secretive. And puts on a lovely show for her as she leaves
What I find amazing is how fast glados arranged this masterpiece

I can't sum this up any differently for me.
Honestly one of the most beautiful ending from a beautifully conceived game
Its moments like this, I shed a manly tear...
She cared...She loved us...and she only wanted us gone :'(
Best soundtrack in the whole game
1:30 I wonder if that confirms the theory that Caroline(GLaDOS) is chels’ mother. With the lyric “to my little girl”
Caroline: screw you chell , i work at Aperture and i can't pay for child support so i will put you at someone's door *few years later*
GLaDOS: oh hey you are back and i still won't pay for child support
That cube being tossed out at you will always tear me up
coming back and hearing this after so long it still makes me cry
Anyone saying Chell would go out and help fight against the Combine after this dont truly understand this game.
Portal 2 is estimated to take place atleast 50,000 years after the first portal, so its safe to say that Chell has outlived Alyx, Gordon Freeman, most likely the whole Universal Union and any other intelligent life on Earth or even the whole universe.
@@emstink if you wanna talk numbers, Some devs estimated about 253'000 years.

around the 0:40 second mark when the single turret is singing, and the large one is about to sing you can hear a small intake of air, and while i understand its just like, ellen lmao, it gives the smallest bit of humanity to GlaDOS's last act and gets the tears going
So true
I must say that this music is simply beautiful.
This makes me tear up when I see this cuz, portal 3 isn't coming out
Maybe it is.

Technically it will, half life and portal are in the exact same universe so when HL3 releases (it's confirmed) we'll TECHNICALLY have P3

cool thing i wish people took more note of: glados isn't calling chell her child, it's more of an affectionate term like how people call each other "baby" in relationships.
Can't believe Glados and Chell are lesbians, good for them
@@KiiBon while it isn't fully confirmed they're lesbians, (never having any comment on their opinion of other genders) the game's developers actually do mention that they're ex-girlfriends canonically
@@henryfarded where do they say this?
@@Chaotic-hex sorry for the late reply, i cant include the link because youtube will take down the comment but here's the quote implying they're ex girlfriends: "One day in the fall, Coulton finally heard from Valve. They were ready to talk about the ending and yes, they wanted a song. A few days later, a Dell XPS laptop showed up at Coulton's apartment with an early copy of the game. Discussions continued. While elements of the ending were still in flux, everyone agreed that Portal 2 was going to end with the AI GLaDOS breaking up with Chell...." the stuff talking on the topic keeps going and i think the idea was partially scrapped but theres a youtube video covering the topic in more depth titled "Portal From The LGBT+ Angle - GLaDOS and Chell's Tension" it covers it really well and gets most of the evidence compiled in one place

I read a comment here it said that the ending probably has something to do with the greek mythology and in greek mythology when you die you go to a wheat field with your best friend and if thats the case I got a bad thing to tell you the moment those turrets pointed their lasers at her she died and went to the wheat fields.
