This woman made GLaDOS as memorable of a character as she is. The writing in Portal and Portal 2 was obviously some of the strongest I’ve ever seen in a video game (or any other kind of media for that matter) but Ellen McLain gave GLaDOS all the personality that made her my favorite video game villain of all time. Love you, Ellen.
They were going to use a Computer generated voice for GLaDOS, but after they recorded some lines with it, they found out it would cost more money than they had to use the voice, because to use the voice in a movie, or game, they'd have to pay money to the people who made the voice, so they eventually hired Ellen to do GLaDOS.
People mention she's an opera singer but forget to say *this is the reason why she has been chosen to do GLaDOS' voice*. Gabe Newell fucking loves opera.
it's just a simple song in a classical singing style, not a whole role lol. any trained opera singer, or any singer in general, should be able to do this

when i first finished the game and watched the turrets play and the opera turret sing- the performance moved me so deeply. it was beautiful, made my hairs stand up on end soon after i watched it on youtube with captions and BAWLED MY FUCKING EYES OUT and ofc a tear or two dropped just now. still a powerful and gorgeous performance :')
