I was worried at all the people upset at the She-Ra reboot but who apparently don't remember the He-Man reboot. Like, some people were unironically saying stuff like "What's next, they're going to reboot He-Man?"
I don't understand how such a show could be forgotten so easily. Episode 1: Skeletor gets his face melted off by acid.

    • @RebelTaxi
      @RebelTaxi  6 ปีที่แล้ว +248

Yeah it was a really cool reboot. I was watching the Netflix documentary, the Toys That Made Us. They mention the 2002 He-Man didn't do well for the vague reason of "It's something kids at the time didn't want." I'm thinking maybe it was an american action show about an adult in a time full of teen anime heroes.

@@RebelTaxi yet it still had more passion and respect for the source material of the original put into it than this new She-Ra reboot. Thundercats 2011 did the same thing before getting canceled. There are proper ways to do a reboot to appease the existing fanbase while trying to bring in a new audience. This She-Ra reboot fails at doing that and its marketing is partly to blame for this.
Had DreamWorks come out front and told everyone ahead of time that this reboot was going to be radically different from the start then there probably wouldn't have been as much backlash as what they did with waiting a few months before release to show case the Tumblr designs of the characters while deflecting criticism of the designs by calling the critics trolls and incels.

@@alucardtepes8402 I mean… Don’t force yourself to watch something you’re not interested in but 5 minutes is barely enough to properly judge a show, let alone a show with 5 seasons. It almost feels like you went into it with a self-fulfilling attitude without actually giving it a proper chance. You can’t say it’s “bad” when you literally only watched 5 minutes of it. I’m not saying you *have* to like it but you can’t just rag on something you’ve barely watched. It just feels like you’re letting your own preexisting biases cloud your judgment.
For example, I used to hate the anime Black Clover. I only watched the first two episodes and then tried reading the manga. But I just couldn’t get into it. So I left it be for years until last year when I finally gave it a proper chance. I ended up really loving it. Instead of actively looking for a reason to hate something, try to watch with a neutral mindset and draw your own conclusions then. You may end up liking something you didn’t anticipate liking.

And like Pan said in the vid, the main reason a lot of older characters had the same body types was for action figures. Sorry current cartoonists want their characters to be more distinct. “b-but it makes no sense for an overweight person to be-“ Did y’all see Goku and Sailor Moon eat enough for a party of 50 and not gain a pound? It’s fictional, who cares
EDIT: ok first off, peeps don’t seem to be reading my entire comment. Second, I guess the point I’m making is that the animation industry (and entertainment in general) is going to keep advancing, changing and going through various trends as time goes on and media becomes more inclusive. I really don’t think there’s any “corporate” reason behind stuff like this. It’s more diverse bc the field is becoming more diverse. And even if it is corporate, I don’t see how that’s any different from “we gotta have straight white men be the protags bc of course we do”. I’m not even a person big on “ooh someone like me is in this thing!! The media acknowledged my existence! *YAYYY REPRESENTATION*”, but seriously, chill out. Maybe direct your hatred towards something actually negative

The reason I have a problem with force diversity is when it is not like other older shows or feels kind of off. Because there are times when they make a show to push diversity, which is not a bad thing, but it has to be done in a way that feels normal. Not oh look he is the black guy or hey look at these two gay characters. It has be done so that you the veiwer can think like oh cool characters that i can relate to and not characters made because oh you your black you should like this show. Coming from me one show that I could relate to growing up was the proud family, because of how they didn't make the characters stereotypical and how they handle certain issues that the black community faces. Hell even with Adventure time i could relate to Finn because he was going through teenage problems, that i kind of went through and he wasn't even my race. Another thing to add is how sometimes they hire people for only their race and gender and in my opinion they should only hire people if they have the skill.

@brushfyr Corporate decisions to appeal to what they think people want by pandering to certain groups (ie. the piss poor Ghostbusters reboot, which would've sucked no matter who the new cast was imo.) isn't exactly a thing caused by the "evil SJWs" as much as shit marketing decisions. Like, nobody was happy when Evangeline Lilly got shoehorned into the Hobbit films even though it added "diversity" because it was an obviously pandering addition that made no sense. The different body types in the She-Ra reboot actually suit the character roles and makes them easier to identify in silhouette, an important element to character design.
I think people are getting offended over nothing and missing the irony of it.

They basically state that Etheria got ported over to some other dimension from where Eternia is. Which in turn implies that they may one day be able to return it to its proper dimension. Like it's a little hard to deny that his outfit is pretty dated by modern standards. Plus if they were going to keep to the canon of having him be Adora's sibling, it would be more than a little strange to see a teenage boy strutting around in a loincloth. (I mean he and Adora were teenagers in the original as well, but they basically just ignored that by designing them to look like adults instead. The she-ra reboot obviously decided to have her look like a teenager instead, and updated her outfit to match, so it would follow that they would have to change he-man's look as well.

I love that the characters in the She-Ra reboot have distinct body types, it has a more realistic feel and I wish more character designers would do stuff like this, even if it is seen as "pandering to SJWs" or whatever. In real life, some women are slim, others chunky or muscular. Some have large or small breasts. Some even look somewhat masculine, even if they aren't trans. Some ladies love makeup and fashion, others don't really give a shit. They have different skin tones and hairstyles and personalities. The people who deny any of these points show that they don't really know much about women, since they can look just as varied as men and can be just as engaging in personality, as opposed to the hourglass figures and pretty faces you usually see in media. I haven't seen the show yet so idk about how good it is, but I adore the creators for including unique character designs.

People of all shapes and sizes EXIST in real life, they don't all look like Barbie dolls, so why have people made this into some political issue? It's actually kinda weirder to NOT show different body types in a cartoon, especially since it can add a lot of visual interest to a character when they look more distinct, so I've never followed that logic.

My opinion on all these reboots that antagonize the fanbases is simple.
Don't insult them for not liking what you did with the show.
You don't have to cater to them, you don't even have to listen to or care about them, just don't insult them, cause then you get these massive backlashes.
I mean, you might get one anyway, but insulting them makes it worse.
The best thing you can do is just respond "We understand and are listening to your feedback in order to make our show better."
Don't have to mean it, you can just lie to them with that statement, but do not OPENLY INSULT THEM ON SOCIAL MEDIA where everyone can see and in turn might heavily negatively influence your profits.

I tend to agree. What I try to remember is that the first season of a show is rarely amazing. ST:TNG, the Doctor Who reboot, MLP:FIM, none of their first seasons were all that great, in large part because of how much time was necessary to introduce the audience to the characters as opposed to telling good stories. Season 2 is when the magic happens.

The first few episodes are a little awkwardly paced, and I think the fact that they needed to tie it to the original series (which I have very little familiarity with beyond a couple of robot chicken sketches) made for a little weirdness (really Adora? You think that a woman named “Shadow Weaver” and a group ruling a place called the “Fright Zone” May not actually be the good guys like they were claiming?) But by the second half they’ve found their stride with the character dynamics and it’s quite enjoyable. Not quite Avatar level, but I’d actually compare it favorably to Voltron. Minor complaint is that it seems like the villains have all the best characters at this point, especially Catra and her main minions.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure most of the people saying it is horrible are just mad about it being more inclusive than they want it to be and are choosing to hide behind the actual flaws of the show and pretend like it is horrible trash to validify their opinion.

I really liked _Summer Camp Island._ It was kinda cute and the weird stuff was quirky and silly and appealed to my autistic ass. I watched it while my aunt from New York was visiting her timeshare. My mom had seen a few pieces of it while I was watching it but she called me stupid because of how it looks. It infuriates me whenever my mom immediately judges a book by its cover without at least listening to the jokes. I even tried to show that the cartoons were really pushing a "progressive agenda" (take that with a grain of salt) such as those two goth girls from _Craig of the Creek_ as well as that one episode from _Summer Camp Island_ where this one little ghost had two dads. I just really liked Susie the most from _Summer Camp Island_ because she kinda reminded me of Helga Petaki from _Hey Arnold!_ except instead of being hostile to one person she adores, she was being hostile to pretty much everyone while wanting acceptance. I also liked the Oscar-Hedgehog dynamic because I honestly do not remember seeing two main leads of opposite gender being like genuine platonic friends --no (initial) romantic motivation, it was a sibling-like bond and it was really cute. Looking back, I did not know about their ages so yeah, their voices did *NOT* sound like 14 year-olds; they should've been aged to around 9 or 10 while the counselors were at least 14 to 16 in a sense that it's more like they're babysitters who call themselve camp counselors to sound more "dignified." Personal favorite episode was the one with the monsters confronting their "traditional" grandmother. Really loved that stupid/silly ending with "she turned Oscar into cookies!" where even Oscar was a bit too creeped out to eat cookies with his face on them. I feel like the show had a good run and aired at an appropriate time: summer

The funny thing about the original She-Ra was that she was made for girls by women. She was created to compete with Barbie, and the executives wanted her to look more modelish because they thought that’s what girls only liked. The creatures fought this sexism and won. So when these NPC start spouting their nonsense, I just like to remind them that they did nothing to earn this. They are just working off stuff that came before.

My word about the new She-ra, the reason adults complain about a kids series is because they expected a kids show to be good for kids that they can let their kids watch. The creator claims she is trying to make the show anime-styled in terms characters, genre, or both. Let me say this, NOT EVERY anime have anatomically correct proportionate bodies. Even 80s American cartoons had something like that before foreign animation became noticeable, though barely animated. Doraemon and Maruko-chan looks different than most anime, but at least the characters look like people and had fluent movement. Viewers are concerned the reboot is trying to appeal LGBTs and SJWs.

Critique for the new She-Ra cartoon. Being someone from the 90's I grew up with a lot of cartoons from the 80's. But I've never had much passion / interest in She-Ra, so I have no nostalgic attachment to the original, so I can be as extensive as possible in my review.
But I give credit where it is due, and this will not make the mark any favor other than serve as a warning to the next creator who dares to reflect his own version of the program and for all creators on the dangers of trying to appeal to the superficial concepts of people like the so-called warriors of social justice who want to alienate the majority of humanity that lives today instead of worrying about the quality of their design and whether or not it is interesting is stimulating.
This show is more about satisfying the personal desires of its creator using the classic character as a platform (hi Noelle Stevenson), and this is very shameful and myopic for several reasons. The main heroine with a design and a personality like Adora is not bad, but the drawings of her alter ego leave nothing to the imagination, and honestly it is quite dull and masculine even (She-Ra). The original was a young woman who turned into a beautiful Amazonian heroine, while this new She-Ra transforms from a teenage into a bigger teenager, who looks like a giant dwarf with a lion wig.
The fact is that Adora is apparently more pleasant (well-designed) than the part of her that supposedly makes her a heroine (She-Ra). In addition, it seems to fix much more the underlying lesbian attraction of the creator of this cartoon (Noelle Stevenson) that is created between Adora and Felina (Catra) making it appear that it is practically everything that the creator wanted was to approach a lesbian adolescent romance. Is it about saving the world or keeping us in suspense how long will it take until these two resolve to come out of the closet and get it over with? With this and other LGBTQ nuances, it is difficult to define who the target audience is, and in each episode the protagonists really are children. But who is the target of the drawing? Are they even the little kids ?, Are the most liberal old fans ?.
It is strange that while they say that history has its foot on the ground and a certain magical realism, and everyone is at war, but the teenage villains do not seem so evil, and the heroes act as if they are having a date or going for a walk things got serious.
The character Entrapta was originally a villain in the old program, but here she started now as a princess and spontaneous friend who changing sides with a poor lie and scientific interests (this is strange and lazy).
Do not mention designs that are too disproportionate in almost all characters that are not Adora and Feline (Catra). Shimmering left the heroine with personality to be equal to She-Ra in reliability to suddenly be a short, fat brat who prides herself on disappearing. The Archer looks like the guy who's only there to be the comic relief, whatever. The shape of the faces of the other girls is very similar to dolls, but many do not match physically with the parts of their bodies. Another thing, think is if Ventania (She-Ra's horse) had little screen time when he was with She-Ra (Adora) every step of the way in the old drawing as He-Man and the Warrior Cat. Perhaps this could have distracted the public from its new and terrible design if she mounted her flying horse longer than she remained like a giant dwarf with a blonde wig. This new She-Ra design has the Korra Legend style mixed with Steven Universe. The former relied on terrifying stories and character development, but it does away with the popularity of its predecessor (Legend of Anng).
In conclusion, this new cartoon from the new She-Ra is another themed experiment to test if society is already liberal enough to have a LGBTQ heroine as the protagonist of a good show. The animation has more flaws than the script, the shading and the colors were not very good, they need to improve this, and the design did not please me anything, it draws life if in 1980 they had the ability to produce an animation with that quality was of if it was expected that this new one was at least the height, unfortunately this did not happen, the trait and very irregular in some scenes, it seems that it was done lazily, I kind of felt that at times it was copying SU.
Maybe you have a small chance of getting a second and third season, but that's all. Otherwise, with all that is established, there is no chance that this new She-Ra can go as far as or be as significant as the new "Voltron." This program (She-Ra) could give lessons on how not to adapt a classic franchise that cross generations. This design is more of a joke in bad taste than a franchise restart.

If I were in charge of rebooting a classic, I'll do my damn best to:
Study the source material, not just watching it, saying that it looks corny and call it a day, I meant REALLY looking into it, what each episode meant and seeing what kind of things they we're teaching kids back then (a lot of people point out how these shows were only made to sell toys, but no one points out how many episodes have PSAs at the end, explaining what the episode was about just so the kid's parents won't get angry or something)
Take elements from the original that works, and amp them to 11
Make an overall upgrade to their designs
And make a genuine storyline with character growth and all that jazz
Details like "so and so is this skin color or likes the same gender" should be the last things to think about. Character's personalities comes first (I like to use the, "just so happens to be" element on making characters. Gives me more room to flesh them out on what should be the MAIN selling point for said character, and not go all Dragon age Dev on the audience)
Oh and if I end up getting backlash on anything, I'm not gonna resort to labeling them of being things they are not, and bash the original show.

Oh, yes definitely. With how the show delved into themes of responsibility, purpose and identity. Especially tackling the subject of proving one's self worth to yourself and others. And what it could mean. Which its audience could relate to and learn from much like the PSA's of old.

Very well said. I think that's drew me into the 2012 TMNT. It was a series made by a fan who had studied the franchise his whole life, and wasn't afraid to both update it and correct problems from the original while simultaneously showing love and respect for the franchise. It's the best case scenario for creating a reboot.

My buddy Keith lived in a graveyard once for a whole year. It wasn't a dare or nothin', he just got kicked out of his house. He said he NEVER saw a single ghost 'cept for this one time when a ghost stabbed him from behind and took all his money, and he might've just been a homeless guy, 'cause he had a robe on with two eyes cut out his face.

Honestly, the new She-Ra is quite enjoyable. Most of the characters are just okay to me. The only character I am really invested in is Catra and her relationship with Adora. That's some fucking tasty shit right there
I think the biggest issue I have is the continuity. Like, as an example, in one episode there's a set of stairs leading up to Glimmer's bed, and the next they suddenly vanish just for them to do a gag? Things like that are all over the series and it always seems like a lazy oversight. It really drags the show down for me, and I hope they fix this issue.
Also, I like the new body types and think they make a lot of sense, except that sometimes they shove them in our faces (outside of the show that is). They show off how 'diverse' it is and it just tastes bad on my tongue. I like the new designs, but you shouldn't be putting them on a pedestool for the sake of representation.

I think calling Summer Camp Island "sensory overload" and an "acid trip" is not entirely correct, I personally think there are many episodes where there is an appreciation for stillness and peace. I think the episode playing while you were describing the show as sensory overload did indeed perpetrate your point, but there are other episodes which are not as wild and chaotic as the first episode. I don't know if I'm reading into this too hard but I feel like the show gets more serene and ordered as you keep watching, like you're being accustomed to the wacky world along with the characters. Also the characters' ages were lowered to like 10 or 11 and I feel like the show managed to capture the child-like wonder and naivety that would embody children thrust into a world full of sentient objects, monsters and magic. I enjoyed this show a lot, but I don't fully agree with the criticism in this video, not all episodes are overloading acid trips.

9:33 I don't know what you're talking about. A lot of cartoon start episodic and never had a story based back then , a lot of cartoons were just filler to fosters home to billy and mandy to teen titans sometimes, hey arnold didn't get a story till a few seasons in, why do cartoons do that, then when a cartoon starts going to have a story it turns back episodic. I don't mind action shows super hero's, but when a show like adventure time and Steven universe does it its unacceptable, I wish that trend would stop
