The fact that "Kubo" lost at the box office to freaking "Trolls" of all movies, really got under my skin.
Brandon Waters maybe because trolls was more advertised and more people might prefer the troll style of animating.
this is just me guessing though I don't know much about either movie.
Cj cathead I liked the animation style in Trolls. But the movie as a whole just felt pandering to today's generation of kids. Pop songs all over the place. Celebrity voice overs. Poop jokes. And characters with "attitude".
Kubo just looks like a 'what the heck is this even'? And Trolls kinda looks a bit like Wreck it Ralph or something like that...IN fact thecharacter dynamics seem very similar.
I'm chalking it up to bad advertising, honestly.
Brandon Waters The animation is quite good with many of the textures being furry or made of yarn, with the whole scrapbook theme but the plot is so goddamn predictable and contribed with how that one troll that was litterly put in the mouth of the bergen yet still having a chance? Really? Its bad enough the movie is hard to take seriously with how overly happy everything is
Kubo was very badly advertised. By the time I had even heard of it, it was almost out of theaters. I did like Trolls, but Kubo was far more original. Laika Studios is massively underrated.
I got to meet C. Martin Croker at a con about a week before he died. There weren't a lot of people at his booth, so I managed to have a pretty lengthy conversation with him. He was very humble and funny, and just an all-around cool guy.

The photo isn't old really, even finding some recent one he looks the same as the photo pan showed.

ICE AGE is essentially the modern day theatrical equilevant of The Land Before Time franchise; makes one good movie and then shells out shameless cash-in sequel after shameless cash-in sequel.

The land before Time movies at least had the decency to be released as direct to video movies, and Ice Age doesn't compare to the first Land before time, that was a Don Bluth's masterpiece. Ice Age was just your average animated movie that somehow got turned into a franchise, even if nobody asked for it.

Some Nick executives spoke at my ol' college a few years back. They talked about how SpongeBob was lukewarm in its first season. I don't remember the story exactly, but it was either "It had just an okay first season, but one executive who loved the show fought for it to have a second season" or "It just had an okay reception to the pitch, but one executive who loved the idea fought for it to be made into a show". But either way, that one person had to push SpongeBob through to get popular before it got an early boot. Can you imagine a world with a one-season SpongeBob? Or a world where more shows are given a chance to build up their popularity?

@Cherie. I hope your not basically saying "if sponge bob basically didn't exist" which is UNFAIR and unrealistic because it's a show. It had a right to be on air JUST like other shows. SpongeBob is not to blame for other shows being under played. It's NICK'S fault. 2004 was supposed to be SB's last year. Who pushed it on?? NICKELODEON. Also It being "Luke warm" was just someone's opinion though not a fact. And the PILOT episode called "Help Wanted" is what tested audiences interest, just like pilots in other shows. The seasons came due to popular demand. More than someone maybe pushing the show. No TV show was meant to have 1 season unless it was a plain BAD show. So we are not blaming sponge bob. It's a show..it's not alive. Besides Nick played fairly odd parents a lot TOO. It's true other shows should've had a chance but again, the NETWORK is to blame..not a TV show. Nick could've picked ANY show to exploit...they just chose spongebob.
Hi flowerbunny. Absolutely not my intention. I support any successful show that can go on for seasons, because that gives a lot of people stable jobs. I know people who have worked on The Simpsons for over 20 years. I may not watch the show as much, but it is still successful enough to continue and that's fine by me! I am saying that it's a shame most shows don't reach their potential, and SpongeBob was almost one of them.

don't blame audiences for not seeing Kubo. blame who ever decided to barely advertise it and released it in a fewer than normal amount of theaters.

I'm from NY and Kubo wasn't advertised well. Only thing I knew about was that he had a little guitar thingie that controlled paper..

Nicholas Leavitt it's the status quo... if a franchise looks familiar more than likely it'll get it's money back, and as for sing, secret life of pets, and even... fucking trolls... it's the child demographic. a movie like Kubo is in a weird limbo of being marketed toward kids, but having more adult and somewhat terrifying things making a lot of dumb parents in the day and age to afraid to take their children to see a film like it
I loved Secret Life Of Pets, haven't seen Sing or Trolls but people I know liked it. My friend took his daughter to see them and he liked it.

Billy Barnett Here's my problem though, while SLoP, Sing, and Troll are perfectly fine movies, they are not pushing any boundaries. Well, Trolls did a little, but I'm mainly talking about Illumination. They play it way too safe with their movies to the point were they just feel generic. The Secret Life of Pets is literally just Toy Story with animals and has probably the most predictable plot of any modern CG animated movie today because it just uses things that others have done before it. Kubo on the other hand is taking risks and trying to tell a more original and mature story to it's audience. And sure, while Kubo's story wasn't perfect, Laika is at least trying with it and is very passionate about their movies. Too many CG movies nowadays that aren't Disney or Pixar and becoming to play it way too safe and aren't taking risks with their movies. So I give Laika my fullest respect for going against trends.

SBells27 Oh... you weren't joking. The reason that Kubo not being seen was tragic is because it didn't get money. If it didn't get money, more animation like Kubo will not be made. Watching it on Kisscartoon, as apposed to trying to watch legitimately, does not solve that problem. Bottom line, if you want more cartoons like Kubo, Kisscartoon should be a last resort. Good DVD sales has caused producers to think twice before (Probably itunes and netflicks popularity couldn't hurt either).

I saw Kubo two times because I knew it was going to be a flop. Almost nobody ever wants to see animation that is not Disney or Dreamworks. The only 2D animated movie I remember after the flop of Princess and the Frog, said to convince studios to never release a film like that again, was Spongebob Out of Water, and the advertisement focused on the 3D scenes that were only 10-15 minutes long. Stop-motion is already too expensive for movies whose premise doesn't appeal to the mainstream as much as a kid comedy. Look at the Oscars, the hiatuses and the treatment of the Sausage Party animators. Even if this decade is producing some of the best animation, the regard of it is the worst.
Kubo failed because Lakia doesn't know how to market their movies. The same thing happened with Box trolls and Paranorman.

Princess and the Frog's returns weren't particularly great, but it wasn't by any stretch a flop. It still at least turned in some profit.

Actually I noticed that they marketed this one better than their others. They even had sweepstakes and had commercials in a variety of places.
I think the issue is that mainstream audiences just aren't interested in anything animation unless it is Disney or Pop - Cultural related and those who would like don't have money or time. Maybe they should market their movies to college/high school students.... But even then that still might only attract a certain amount

Simularly, I was really hyped for Hardcore Henry, but for some reason the closest cinema that showed it was over 2 hours away. The same thing happened with 9 ('Little Big Planet the movie' as Pan Pizza called it.) 9 wasn't that great in the end, but Hardcore Henry was amazing and i'm so pissed I didn't get to see it at a cinema!
I remember having a similar situation but with the shaun the sheep movie at my cinema. They never showed the movie but i remember seeing a poster for the movie months before it was to be released back which was ridiculous.
my mom is a fan of ice age... and she refuses to accept the 4th and 5th movies as part of the franchise... for her those movies do not exist

I fined this odd... the last episode had a vary conclusive feel to it so I did not realize it was canceled.
Butt Yeah but they had much more ideas planned to go deeper into Wander and Lord Hater's character and origin. Season 2's arch was finished but ideas are left to possibly never see the light of day.

I like Teen Titans Go is a pretty ok show, but seriously do not they have anything better? Adventure Time has already gone, Regular Show has already exhausted the formula, and Steven Rapeyverse hiatus after hiatus, really worth just producing a show that can not even maintain some regularity? And it is not as if the quality of the show is phenomenal to explain, this shit is pretty average getting deformed sometimes
Man 2016 seems like a fever dream at first but compared to the years that followed and the nightmare that was 2020 and how strict and constructive and less free the internet has become since ... i kinda miss it and the fun chaotic freedom that came with the year

This always happens to the best animators, they make an amazing show that no one knows about until it's too late to save it. Just look at Craig McCracken. Wander Over Yonder was god-tier, but literally nobody cared about it until "I'm the bad guy" went viral.

I actually quite enjoyed the 18th and 19th seasons of South Park. Those were serialization done RIGHT. Each episode stood on their own, even with the story arch. It was refreshing to see them trying something different. Season 20 started out so promising, but they REALLY shit the bed with the whole Garrison/Trump election thing. The "troll" plot would have made a nice episode, or even a two parter, but TEN episodes of it? It was just...boring with no payoff. Seems like they're going back to the old format next season based on the latest episode title "The End of Serialization as We Know it."

Yes, but nowadays, R Rated animated films are the rarity, so Sausage Party opened the idea to modern audiences and possibly filmmakers.

Apparently, the guy who owns Laika is Phil Knight, who's also the co-founder of Nike. Yes, that Nike. His son Travis is Laika's president. The studio is basically a passion project for him. Their movies can keep bombing but as long as Travis wants to make more, he'll get his dad's money. It's great.
That said, I'd still rather have Laika's movies be successful on their own without needing Nike-money. They deserve it.

Something new and original from a stop motion animation studio comes out, but everyone had to see the 7 Minutes of the Joker movie that everyone already KNEW was going to suck. This gives Hollywood the idea that we hate new and original things and only want romantisisation of seriouse mental illnesses and abusive relationships dressed up as Hot Topic cash grabs.

Considering how awful the animation industry was treated in 2022, I think we deserve another animation fails of the year list.
So I got a classic Powerpuff girls ad before the video so even Hulu's like "Don't worry guys, this is the good Powerpuff series that's on our service!"
I saw that as well and they made sure to add the word classic on it to differentiate from the disappointing new series.
Cartoons are NEVER on Nickelodeon here now, it's all live action crap instead.

Kubo was gorgeous, but had so, so many problems. Hardly that studio's best work. Still though, that set designed for the skeleton scene was just about the coolest thing to see as an post credit scene.

yeah i mean Kubo did the worst for profits but Coraline was the ONLY one of their four films to actually make back double it's budget, and no more than $124 mil at that. I highly doubt Studio Laika would still be around if it weren't for their close ties to Nike.

We had so much fun the manager came in to check that we weren't burning the place down cause we were so loud.

I honestly don't know why people liked Sausage Party that much. The jokes are the equivalent to 13 year old's who recently and barely understanding the word "comedy", the animation (though impressive on a certain scale) is like a polished french animation, and had a running time of WAYYY too long; thirty minutes could have been okay and unique to movie standards now and days. Just watch the trailer and you've pretty much watch the whole movie. I personally LOATHE this movie because, along with Suicide Squad, it's ticket sale blew up in the box office, overshadowing Kubo. I swear if Sausage Party is even nominated for the Oscars, or any other award, I'll just give up hope for 2017! Maybe the entire world!

It depends on what you mean by the ending. The orgy, I think people were way too unnecessarily shocked by, as they should have seen it coming by the end of the movie, but anything that is just flatout sequel bait is worthy of the spot imo.
the entire Frederator arguement pisses me the fuck off, if i am wrong here correct me but Bee and Puppycat was kickstarted, it had raised over 850k, beating its original goal of 600k after the pilot aired like in 2012-2013 about the same time Bravest warriors season 2 was airing.
I remember the delays Frederator stated with Bee and Puppycat production (even though it was entirely crowdfunded) was delayed and because of that delay, season 3 of Bravest warriors would be held back so they could air along side or at least at the same time.
that was 3 years ago, and the rest of Bee and Puppycat was still unavailable to the public or even its kickstart backers, the whole arguement that Bravest Warriors didnt make enough money seems kinda bullshit cause season was in high demand after the season 2 finale and it seemed to be company decision to delay and delay, inevitably killing hype and interest in Frederator which kinda essentially devolved into its own "Game Theory" content and 107 facts that are all so obvious I was surprised i wasn't watchin a Rebeltaxi review.
then the absolute kicker, season 3 came out (on the paysite Vrb that ya promote) and lieu and behold, season 3 was only 6 eps......BUT ACCORDING TO FREDERATOR THEY GOT OVER 52 EPS IN PRODUCTION RIGHT NOW
all in all, how is it entirely (cant stress that enough) youtube's fault when bad decisions were made on two of its really well loved and supported series, and one was even crowdfunded?

Oh God thanks to remind me of Kubo and the cinema's mistreatment , here in Mexico it was on general rooms during the first release weekend but then this fucking Inferno movie with Tom Hanks occupied all 9 out of 13 rooms and Kubo was showed only on this "Junior cinema", which if full of toys and playgrounds so the kids are distracted during the film targeted to them, and the only way to access is to bring a child and being responsable, and it only lasted one week before removing it completly from the movie theaters in all my city.
