- Now that the Wano arc has come to a close, in the manga anyways, now is the time to look back and examine the arc and unfortunately its not good. Between useless characters, characters whos story went nowhere, themes from other arcs being outright rejected, an unreasonable number of panels focusing on character and events that didn't even mater in the next chapter instead of on the Strawhats. All in all a really bad time.

Orochi did a LOT of terrible things to Wano, but Orochi was a sympton of Wano's attitude and behavoir. If it wasn't him, it was gonna be someone else.
I really thought the whole point of Orochi was to make Wano realise the wrong they did to the whole clan. Instead at the end the "were made to burn" just a 180 and didn't make sense at all.
Why is Carrot the leader of Zou all of a sudden? What leadership qualities did she demonstrate to warrant that? How irresponsible of Inu and Neko. Lost respect for them tbh. Feels like Oda is just trying to subvert expectations and spite fans who anticipate or theorize.
The last part of your comment is stupid do you really think Oda has ANY time at all to check out theories ?

Oda has even said in an SBS that he knows that theories exist and there are whole channels about them but he doesn't watch them as he feels it will effect his story... now... does his editor watch them? Who knows. Does his editor change stuff up because of expectations? Maybe. But if we are taking Oda at his word, he does watch or read up on theories.
As a simple response i would say, who else could? Carrot is the only one who's carrying Pedro's will and she is pretty strong she stood up against peroli and zoo is for the most part a safe island cuz zunisha himself is strong af and no one can figure out where his location is

Yeah the arc was mad woke and gross but I don’t think carrot being a leader is part of that it’s more like Oda just wanted to end carrot’s story in any way and he thought let’s just make her the leader of zoo that will be good ! He just really didn’t care to think too hard about it kind of like how he just didn’t care to give some of the strawhats any great moments at all or how he didn’t care to put Sanji in the roof top Oda just has his priorities some stuff he will put so much care and thought into it and other stuff he will just do whatever like making carrot the leader honestly I didn’t care either way of what happens to carrot so I don’t blame Oda for not caring either but I blame Oda for not making Sanji shine more by making him kick Kaido at least once

Wano is the arc that made me lose interest in the series tbh , Almost all of the post-timeskip One Piece arcs have some flaws here and there but Wano was one huge Flaw in itself, everything down from the horrible pacing to fake-out deaths , stupid ass-pulls and unexplained power-ups (which was BS and sometimes as cringe as FT fights ), 100s of useless characters who did nothing whatsoever , inconsistenty and unexplained plot points which were never covered , Big Mom and Kaido getting beaten easily to name a few and I can go on to name it's flaws but the sad thing is that despite it's glaring problems the fans are ready to eat it up and act as if this is one of the best arcs in One Piece or fiction when it's clearly not . We've seen way better arcs like Enies Lobby or Marineford. Even Oda's drawing and panelling has gotten worse ever since Wano which clearly suggest that he has lost his touch . Even the ongoing arc is bad with lots of unnecessary fanservice . One Piece is not the same as before and many other fiction are far better than it , sorry but this is the harsh truth

@@hygytyhu9729 Wano helped tie plot threads from Punk Hazard, to Dressrosa, to Whole Cake Island, Zou, etc. The whole adventure of the New World built up to that. Also the gathering of the poneglyphs is literally the whole point in finding Laughtale, which they needed to bear Big Mom and Kaido for. Also Oden’s backstory gave us more of WB and Gol D. Roger’s backstory, and the Rocks pirates. On top of that we learnt more about Pluton. Saw the King decimate another island. Have more plot setups for the Revolutionary Army.
Wano was important, and without it basically every New World arc besides Reverie would feel incomplete, even dating back to Sabody with Law.

Now that you mention it... a time skip on Wano would have been perfect. Honestly, One Piece needed at least one more time skip. A 19 year old Luffy beating Emperors of the sea who have been ruling for decades, and achieving feats even Gol D Roger only did in his 40s and 50s is way too unbelievable.
I think Luffy being this young is just a subtle way to show how he surpassed Roger because if he was around Roger’s age Roger just looks so much better because he didn’t need a devil fruit to be pirate king so Luffy being much younger makes it more even

In 2016 I binged One Piece and caught up to the series. At the time we were in Zou taking a detour to whole cake island. I really enjoyed WCI it’s one of my favorite weekly experiences ever. And I think it’s the best new world arc but at the time I really wanted to go to Wano.
The Wano arc was the most anticipated arc at the time and for me it not only failed to live up to the hype but it changed how I view the series. This is the only arc I’ve ever read to not only feel dragged out but also rushed.
The villains of the arc were very underwhelming. Big Mom who had so much built up with Luffy went out sad against Kidd and Law. Kaido was built up since 2013 and his character was very disappointing. During the raid he a lot of build up and in the end all that was undone so that he can a brute who just wanted chaos. It was terrible.
I feel like Kaido could have paralleled Luffy with the whole JoyBoy thing. Oda made it seem like Kaido really wanted to become JoyBoy and Luffy happens to be JoyBoy. He could have wrote around that and made it a really great backstory.
The strawhats aren’t special to me anymore. In one arc the strawhats went from young adults chasing dreams to now characters destined to wake the world up. I don’t find them interesting anymore if I’m being honest. Also the “One Piece” doesn’t have the same appeal to me it had before.
The “One Piece”, before, was a treasure anyone could go out to sea get lucky and maybe find. Now it seems like it’s custom fit for Luffy and only him.
Last the tension from the story is all gone for me. The death fakeouts were out of control during that arc.
Now you may ask why still read the story?

I don't get how you like Gear 5 from a powerscale perspective when it literally destroyed powerscaling in the series. Luffy toyed with the strongest creature alive. He is now #1. There is no more tension in the series. Shanks and Imu might as well bow down to Luffy now

That didn't happen. Oda just writes things that make no sense consistency wise with his own world.
luffy using his base form and gear 4s probably dealt more damage than gear 5. Remember, Kaido has to use his phases just in order to catch up with luffy.

There's no sense of scale for how much health Luffy has left because he keeps getting the fuck back up every time he gets knocked out. There is no weight to any of Kaido's attacks because of that. Lack of/perfunctory backstories is what pisses me off most. For me, a good backstorymskes the difference between a good and bad arc.

I have to disagree with what you said at 11:59 about Udon Prison. It was an extremely important part of Wano that illustrated HOW Luffy was able to learn and develop advanced Armament haki. If there was just a textbox that said "1 month later", I think it would've felt like a cheap cop-out.
Not really it was pointless and a waste of time if he was just going to introduce a better power with no preamble and ruins the power dynamic of the world
I didnt care for Oden and the scabbards. The whole arc was a drag. The only good part about Wano was all the flashbacks to Whitebeard and Roger.
I unfortunately don’t like Wano, too. I would would never read this arc again.
So they just re-established the Kozuki tyranny in Wano replacing Orochi and Kaido's. Not so much of good guys.

This video is 50/50 for me. I like some parts, but where you said scabbards vs straw hats would be a good fight, I completely disagree. Also, i dont recall that luffy and hiyori don't really have that great dynamic, so seeing her as one of the final villains would be kind of upsetting. Strawhats vs scabbards would be extremely one-sided as Luffy could probably take them out by himself so I don't really understand that matchup.

@@tohruadachi7509 For me it is. The reason is that it goes against the very philosophy that the series preaches. The "worst" arc in One Piece before Wano is mostly just because its a boring story. But Wano took the lows to hell with making a boring ass final battle and offending a lot of readers by breaking its own philosophy.
Episodes and Chapters are dragging the most because of this bad arc.

The head of the Kurozumi Family proceeded to work toward gaining the shogunate by poisoning the other daimyo. However, his plans were foiled when the shogun suddenly fathered an heir, Kozuki Sukiyaki. At some point afterwards, the Kurozumi Family's plot was then brought to light, and they lost all of their power and possessions as their leader was sentenced to commit seppuku.
In the following years, the remaining family members were hunted and lynched by a majority of Wano's extrajudicial citizens out of self-righteousness and revenge for the deaths of the daimyo Kurozumi's leader had poisoned
Wano just feels like a lazy, bloated mess of battles and conflicts with very little actual story to it.
I still think that them killing Orochi fully was wasted potential. Like i heard alot of theories in the past that momo would spare Orochi since everyone else wanted his death, and he'd find similarities between his life and Orochi's, or we'd get an actual scene where they imprison him, but appologize for wiping out his clan and giving him no real other choice. Instead what we got was the country saying Kurozumi's are born to burn, and Tama being right there, someone who has similiar hair color to Orochi and i wouldn't be suprised if she's a Kurozumi and wont reveal it because that's a death sentence.
Idk i hear people talk about how this arc was great, but I remember being bored near the end. It was predictable that the 2 yonko would fall instead of letting Big mom get away (when honestly i think pirate warriors 4 did the wano arc ending better imo). And honestly as cool as Jimbei is, I would have rather we kept Carrot or Yamato. On one hand you have someone who can be a great lookout and can be an asset if she learns to control her sulong (could even get some of that medicine from Chopper to be able to use it in a pinch), and honestly with Yamato, she could have been like Oden in a way that, she'd journey with the King of the pirates like oden did and even see Laughtale in the end, but along the way, maybe she learns that she doesn't need to be Oden and can be her own person (as from my understanding she only became Oden because she didn't like her father) and with the theory that Katakuri will join the Strawhats (which wont happen unless he allies with them due to big mom not being concidered a Yonko anymore) but if it did? he'd have 2 children of Yonko's on his crew and be pretty stacked for the Blackbeard/World goverment final battle.
Oh and let's not even get started on the fact that Carrot should have killed Perospero/got to fight Jack. would have been a great sendoff to Carrot if we weren't ever getting her. For comparrison we had 2 people who followed the crew (Vivi and Rebecca) who weren't able to harm the people who hurt them and their family the most. It would have been so fitting to have Carrot beat Perospero and be left with the choice of killing him, and she doesn't because she knows Pedro probably wouldn't want her to do that.
It'd also give us any reason to think she'd be a good leader at all, since that whole "making her the dutchess of Zou" felt forced because Oda heard people wanted her to join and he needed a reason for her to not join
Gear 5th is what ruined this series. Idc if you think its foreshadowed well, it's not explained why gear 5th is how it is and its a generic op anime buff that gives the mc reality bending power. I hope all of post time skip one piece is just luffy's fever dream

"The Kurozumi were born to burn" is a sigh of relief from the entirely of Wano at end of a ridiculously oppressive and cruel regime. Orochi was punished for the 20 years of abuse on Hiyori's people, not because he is a Kurozumi. When she avenged her father Oden who died making a boiled oden pun, she merely made a burning coal pun.
A crime was commited by some Kurozumi members.
All Kurozumi were oppressed and discriminated because of that.
The trauma suffered by the clan gave birth to Orochi, who planned to bring the same misfortune to Wano citizens.

Orochi was subjugated.
Hiyori: Kurozumi were born to burn!
The oppressor was taken down. Another oppressor takes his place. Bravo Oda

And instead of trying to heal the bad blood Orochi doubles down and backstabs Oden, sells out the entire island to Kaido, and then procceeds to oppress everyone. (Reminder that in Orochis POV all Kozukis were dead)
Even if it *really was* about the Kozuki crimes, why did Orochi rule Wano the way he did once they were gone? All the Kozuki's were dead.
But tbh the real issue is that you are seeing this in some genocidal way, when its just a classic blood feud story. Where two families fucking hate eachother and destroy eachother. Think Mcoys/Hatfields or Montogue/Capulets not Germans/Jews.

Brother, there's a big highlight on the term WANO CITIZENS. They are the main perpetrators. The Kozuki are simply enablers that let its lovely citizens indiscriminately oppress ALL of the Kurozumi clan. They said it themselves, it spiralled out of their control. Tama had to have her identity hidden because she will be torched in no time. And yet again, Hiyori doubles down on the Kurozumi discrimination at the end lol
And she was supposed to be on the good side of things. Can't even hold a candle to a 16 years old mermaid princess.
Why not say "Orochi was born to burn" or something what does the Kurozumi have to do with it

Luffy and Kaido unleashing a blast of conquerors haki would've been very clever to slim both sides down to the most relevant characters.
Though I in principle agree with the idea Wano was a terrible arc, this was a pretty poor analysis; I wouldn't even call it an analysis. The random prediction about Hiyori committing mass genocide and taking control of Pluton, making Luffy return to stop her, felt completely out of place, and also just makes no sense. We've just read one of the longest arcs in the manga saving these people, and now they suddenly become the antagonists? The manga does not try to hint at this at all. Why would Yamato or the Akazaya Nine even allow this to happen?
For the rest, most of it was just empty platitudes like "less is sometimes better", or "wouldn't this be cool and awesome?" Or saying, "you could just remove this," while not actually providing a reason for why it is not necessary to have those scenes/characters, and what you'd actually like to see it be replaced by. This wasn't so much an analysis of the writing, as just a run-through calling certain things "lame" and other things "cool".
Wano was shit, and I hope people try to explain more in-depth why it was a complete disaster, and is a bad omen for the rest of the show.

I think agree with what you’re saying overall, but the prediction part was more like a hypothetical theory, I think, and not something that they actually expect or would’ve expected
What's there to say about plot points that could have been removed other than that they barely contribute anything to the plot and that anything else in their place could have been more interesting?
If anything proposing more interesting alternatives helps show how much potential certain setups had and how it was squandered.

Water 7 doesnt conflict with Wano's ending, Marineford does. Robin wanted to learn history and it just so happened there were dangerous truths and learning how revive weapons, Orochi literally burned towns, killed and kidnapped many families, used smiles to steal ppl's emotions, poisoned wano's ecosystem, and literally wanted everything in Wano to burn. These are very different situations
They did mention Oden too much as motivation but saying it was not about Wano at all is not fair In my opinion.
I hope that Oda did it purposedly to hint us into the next arc of Wano, where Hiyori and Momonosuke will discuss or fight over what they believe is right, maybe a split between the Red Fodders and a civil war for the future of the country.
Or anything rather than ending their story like this
What got me was Yamato not joining THAT WAS THE FINAL STRAW it was bad enough that we lost raid suit and 2 yonko but for Yamato to stay in wano was garbage. I just don’t get it. Oda said he wants to end it in 3 years I’d understand this if YAMATO WAS WITH THE CREW as it would be smoooth sailing with a yonko lvl fighter added, but instead she’s staying. to me that’s ELONGATING THE SERIES it contradicts what he says, same with what he said in a recent interview. With author of detective Conan, In which oda Says he doesn’t like to plot threads that divide his fandom, and that he writes the story to Benefit everyone, yet Yamato being top 11 in the world popularity poll above nine I chopper and ussop it’s just disappointing, u really can’t take what he says to be true.

I disagree with most of this video, i get that it wasnt perfect but your solution was to get rid of everything, dont make the readers ask questions, and have to change the story compleatly, i get giving an honest review but thank god your not writing one piece, if it were up to you we would have no interesting characters, big fights that would mean nothing with the lack of back stories, and would be left with no questions making no one actually wanting to look deeper into the story

The romanticized idea of samurai falls in line with the idea that they wanted to avenge their lord. But most of the issues people have with the arc just seems like things one piece had always done.
The Kurozumi point felt like your strongest argument against the arc, largely because this was the point you went in most depth with.
Every other point you made feels like it could have used elaboration on why it was bad beyond personal preference.

Pre-time skip we had to deal with arcs like: Orange Town, Syrup Village, Little Garden, Long Ring Long Land (foxy), and Thriller Bark.
None of Post-time skip is worse than these arcs

There are a few hit-and-miss arcs post time skip, but there isn't a single great arc afterwards. The only barely palatable Arc was Whole cake, and the only good thing about that arc was Sanji's backstory.

I watched the wano arc and it was nice in my opinion not extremely good like I would rewatch it tho. It is stupid how neither Yamato or carrot joined the crew. Gear 5 for me doesn’t really make me feel bored if the story plus it’s goofy and that’s what I like in most anime’s or manga’s.

It's not Hiyori specifically who said Kurozumi was born to burn, it was a fake story made up by the teacher. I think it shows that the problem Orochi had is still there, citizens take justice into their own hands. I wouldn't mind a cover story where we see a kurozumi descendant saved by Hiyori, and helping the kurozumi get accepted by the country.
The issue people had with the line is with Oda himself, not the context of an reenactment play or Hiyori who delivered the line. Oda wrote it as pun, he was happy with the setup and delivery of the scene. Oda’s writing and theme in this scene is in direct contrast to a number of iconic scenes he’s put out before. People loved those scenes and themes, they’re having a whiplash why Oda is now putting out the opposite message in such grand fashion to wrap up a 4 year arc built up over the last 10 years.
The “citizens” don’t take justice into their own hands, unless you’re including samurais, who are portrayed and referred to in One Piece as a formidable force renowned worldwide, which the Wano “citizens” are categorically not portrayed as so, they’re opposed and live in quiet desperation. Their spirits were only lifted when samurais returned. In the context of One Piece, samurai is associated with Wano but not officially or exclusive to the ruling class (Orochi’s forces were not referred to as samurai, while yakuza after Udon were associated with Oden’s samurai). In this story, anyone that was fighting on the good side were samurai while “citizens” were unaware. There was no mention of “citizen” or civilian uprising against Kaido or Orochi in the last 20 years. The rebellion was led by impatient forces associated with Ashura Doji, at the time an Oden samurai, this is before the stretch of 20 years wore on him and he gave up being one and turned into Shutenmaru. Don’t you remember how much a contrast it was all through the raid/uprising/rebellion the “citizens” are partying with their lanterns?
Let’s just be honest here, Oda fumbled, it’s ok. If he wants to revisit Wano on the plot threads of opening the country, Pluton, maybe Yamato, he might retcon or just insert something to justify his Wano ending, but as for the arc in and of itself, he fumbled hard.

The Hiyori point is such a non factor I’m shocked you spent so much time on it. Why do you care what an extremely minor side character has to say? Why does Hiyori’s opinion matter at all? She was saying something in the heat of the moment to the man who killed her family, separated her from her brother for two decades, ruined her life and ruined her country. She has every right to say something spicy to one of the most evil characters in the series

This video is so true and had myself questioning Oda myself, but i still feel he has a positive plan for his set up, like you mentioned in the video turning Hiyoris whole scenario into a story line. Because if you think of the way Kyoshiro back story was braught up, man litterally frowned in a shack for so long cursing Orochis name that he copletly changed his look. And then this man basically raised Hiyori for the remainder of her child hood. There was allways something sus about their relationship that made me feel icky...and this kinda soldifies the fact that Kyoshiro trained Hiyori to see black and white (good and evil).
Oda is already streamlining the story and removing even some good stuff for the Strawhats just for the story to progress faster. Its in his recent interview. Where in the hell does he have the time to explore this?
