I've done a few models for a friend on commission. Last thing he paid me to paint I later found out was a model intended as a gift for another of our friends. It was really touching to think he thought my painting was worthy enough to give as a gift.

As a commission painter who paints my friends Minins also I agree, I do feel lucky though that I normally am painting things to add on to there current armies. And a lot of my additions have helped them move the armies when it came to trading and selling. I see it all as good practice lol

I paint for my friends, but only on a commission basis. So I get to play with/against my own paint jobs AND I get to use my hobby to fund my hobby.
In the event we go to a small tournament together, I've got extra shots at "best painted" too 😂

The best counter to the attachment is having your friend painting a squad for you so you know you'll still get some nice minis.

My wife agreed to paint some minis for a friend. She burned out on painting minis completely and hasn't painted since. I had to finish those minis for her so we could return them to the friend finished.
In general, I don't think it's a good idea for most people to paint for their friends unless they are a Jay-level savant at TCB (taking care of business) or something.
I agree with the suggestion of getting together to paint the minis with the person. That tends to work a bit better. And you can show them some techniques and help them find one that works for them.

I've been paid to paint some minis and board game minis for my friends and I'd like to add a few things to remember when painting your friends' minis that I wish someone had told me:
    1. Talk with your friend BEFORE you start painting on what they expect and what you can/ want to deliver as well as set a deadline for when the project should be finished. If they don't have a scheme in mind then take something that's easy but will still look cool. Also explain if they are being unreasonable and why.
    2. If they aren't a mini painter they might not know the process or how much effort or time painting can take, inform them about the process. I.E. I recently painted Zombicide Undead or Alive and I informed my brother that the zombies would just get bare minimum to look okay on the table with some Speedpaints and explained how painting them traditionally or putting any real effort into them would take way too much time since there are so many of them and would thus cost more, and I showed how the sculpts were quite bad and how it wouldn't really be worth it.
    3. It's okay to say "No." If the minis they have don't interest you then it's fine to say no, or to tell them that you will only do table top standard. If YOU don't feel like it then it will be really boring and it might even show through in your end result.
    4. Update your friend on any changes you need to do to the agreed scheme. Some things don't work out as planned, some details are just not paintable (looking at you, Zombicide), or you make mistakes you need to work around. Inform them. They might not care but they appreciate it. And if they care and you can't fix it they still appreciate honesty.
    5. Don't be afraid to charge them a reasonable sum when painting, it's your time and you probably have your own unpainted plastic, resin, or metal to paint. And don't be afraid to charge a little bit more if they really want a certain color on their project that you don't have.
    6. Learn to detach yourself from the minis, they aren't yours and most likely never will be.

I've painted my friends' models, especially when they get into the hobby fresh. I e joy the experience because I might paint something I may never play or ever own. Thanks to this, I get more practice as an artist. ❤

Great vid! Once in a while I'll paint a little something for our DM. It's hard to hand over those models once I'm done, but at least I know we'll get to see them on the table. One positive is that if I haven't painted in a while, doing a small project for a friend always puts me back on a hobby streak painting my own stuff.

I'm really lucky I have a friend who's quite my senior in the hobby space.
He learnt how to paint back in the bad old days pre-youtube or even forums!
So when I couldn't push through those first few boundaries in early 2000's he was there to take a squad of Dire Avengers and get them to the tabletop plus level i washed them to be at.
It makes such a HUGE difference having some thing at hand thats physical, that visually shows you how it's done and you can take all the kinesthetic lessons from you need.
Because White Dwarfs or Codexs etc just didn't have enough in them to teach you those inbetween steps that matter so much.
Now with TH-cam and great show hosts like Jay it's so much more approachable you might not need a hobby hero in your community but I was lucky I had one. 😊

Idk if I could paint an entire army for someone else, but I could see doing a Kill Team. I did paint up a Harlequin Voidweaver for my brother-law, which was cool because I don't usually paint or play Eldar. I made sure to keep the scheme simple so he could copy it if he wanted.

I painted more than 10.000 points of 40k for my best tabletop buddy, over the course of almost a decade. It enabled me to try loads of different techniques that I never would have used on my own armies, without buying even more stuff for myself. This included several huge and/or expensive forgeworld kits that were both a pain and fun to paint.
I wasn’t able to continue ever since my first child was born, extra hobby time simply vanished into thin air.
The games we played devolved into ever more grey plastic until Contrast hit the scene.
He has been painting his own armies for a couple of years now, making great progress. His increasing number of painted armies even got me off my ass to return to painting.
    Good times!

I’ve painted death guard for my Father and I really enjoyed it because I have space marines, custodes, knights, tau and guard, most of which are very clean looking models, my favourite thing to do with the death guard is to give them a generous coating of agrax earthshade to really dirty up those models and people say they’re the best painted models they’ve seen. I myself still think I can do better as I notice loads of tiny, unnoticeable mistakes and want to improve them, I get the struggle of painting someone else’s models for them

Have done it for a couple for friends and so far i actualiteit prefer it almost over painting my own.
I have a tendency to overthink every single part op the mini's. From bases to paint schemes.
This is where painting for a friend comes in as an advantage, they choose. I just do my best to realise their vision.

My gaming group has a number of exceptionally talented minis painters, and we do trades with the others who don't (or can't) paint their own minis. Everyone seems to have something to offer in return for painting services, whether it's cash, food, or 3D printing of models. I for one paint models for a guy in my group who books the hotels for our convention attendance every year; he pays for the hotel stay, I paint up a bunch of models for him. 🤔

Never do anything involving your friends if there is time/expectation/money involved. It's one thing if you paint them something as a gift, at your own leisure - or if you speed paint models like a crazy bastard and they ask you to knock out five models (which you can do in a sitting). But general rule of thumb...don't. I'd be fine selling painted models to friends at a fair price, etc. But all you're going to normally do is spend too much time (while making little to no money) painting up minis.
