Hi Carl, really enjoyed this video and seeing how impressed both you and Sandra are with the latest model! Thank you for the mention too 😊 As it happens ive just completed a 330 mile ride on mine today, from St Malo to Bordeaux!! Going to Barcelona tomorrow so itll be another 350+ miles 🛣 My Gen 2 XR is taking it all in its stride 💪👍 I'll drop a line in a day or two, cheers!
Had my 2024 XR love it, great comfort, great ergonomics! Just done four days in France perfect. 6000 miles, done. A very sweet handling all rounder! 👍🏻
Thanks for a thorough review. I have the 24 M sport and agree with your assessment. Especially pleased with the bike now that I added a taller screen and deflector. Only thing I’m missing is the shift cam mid-range and a longer side stand 😊
Hi, yes I also thought it would have made sense for bmw to include the shiftcam technology, but when I asked why not, the unofficial answer was it would move it even closer into the GS category 😔. But still.. a lovely motorbike. Glad to hear you have resolved the turbulence issue with your taller screen. Kindest regards Carl 🙋🏻♂️
mai 2020 i bought my very first bike ever, the showroom example of the S1000XR (mj2019, triple black), and straightaway started to commute in the Brussels Antwerp area. The bike now has over 100 000 kms on the clock, as i commute al year all weather and still every ride (almost) ends with a big grin over my face.
Another impressing video! Impressing because I can understand you (and your wife) ! I learnd english in school (50 years ago) and I 'm often disappointed, listening to english speaking (or should I say mumbling) people. Even if I don't like the BMW XR very much (I'm a boxer-engine-fan) I like your Videos soooo much, because I don't need the undertiteling in German or english! And I have seen a lot of interesting content about the 1250. Keep on youtubing, Carl !!! 👍👍👍
Good evening Viktor, thank you for your kind words. Yes the XR is not for everyone but it’s an interesting option for those that want a bit more excitement, not to say the GS doesn’t also offer this but it’s in a different format. Lg, Carl
Great review as usual Carl, a friend of mine has recently bought the M version & I think I would get into serious trouble with either, so I will stick with the GS 👍
Great review, very thorough yet again from you. Answers almost everything that a buyer would ask. Well done. For me, I do like the new bike, but the reason I didn't buy it was that it has a chain, and I am sick of doing chain checks on my big tours (often 7-800kms perday, 4000 in a week) and carrying lube etc. Shaft is so much easier to tour with. But local hills rides, brilliant.
Great review Carl. I’ve had both bikes at the same time - a 1250GS and a gen 2 S1000XR - and I went for the XR first almost every time. Very docile at slow speeds, no real problems with vibration and for me a far more engaging and exciting ride. The only negative was the seat and the slightly rough suspension feeling, both of which they seem to have fixed. The stock screen and the touring screen are poor and cause turbulence, as you’ve said, fit a sport screen or something more aerodynamic like an MRA vario screen. It’s also worth mentioning that it is the best part of 30Kg lighter than the 1250 so a lot easier to handle at a standstill. It won’t suit riders that love to ride on a lazy wave of torque, but if you like to rev a bike a bit more, it’s great. The only thing I’m not much of a fan of are the colour choices. Everyone knows that a red one is the fastest 😂
lol, the Red One, my wife also said the Red one is the better option. Thank you for sharing your own experience with both bikes it’s nice to hear other owner thoughts and impressions are similar to mine. Perhaps if you get chance to try the 2024 version you will let me know your thoughts on suspension and seat. As you can probably tell I really liked it . Have a great weekend Kindest regards Carl 👍🙋🏻♂️
I have a 2019 triple black and have zero vibrations. Smoothest bike ever. I think this vibration thing has been quite overblown. I just wish the front fork was a little stiffer with less travel on twisties. But hey, it's not a super sport bike. I have done trips where I was 10 hours a day on the saddle and with a big aftermarket screen (the GS is amazing for wind management) and a nice cushy seat you are good to go, total tourer. Really enjoyed your video.

I switched from multistrada1260 to gen2 XR and my main decision was, more sport, lesser all road. Sportier riding position, narrow bars. The only downside is little torque in low rpm. You really have to rev this bike to enjoy, but that's no problem for me. I do regularly trackdays here in Assen and there I can enjoy the full sportive character. Hi revs, best braking bike I've ever ridden, easy to turn, yet very stable at high speed corners and you already mentioned good bodyposition is possible for the track. And what about that supersmooth quickshifter! To make things better less turbulence on the highway I bought a mra vario spoiler type C. It's brilliant

for someone who wants to go on the road it’s a potential alternative and probably should be considered instead of the gs, However the gs for all surface travel is leaps and bounds ahead of the xr. I use mine in all surfaces in all weathers from tarmac to gravel/mud etc and the gs vs xr isn’t a comparable conversation. I found the xr a very buzzy bike and didn’t rate it at all.
Not a GS replacement for me, too tall. I was keen for one, but the R1300GS with Adaptive Vehicle Height and low seat is just right for us aging shorties.
That is a bit of a weakness - it is quite tall, and o found that the low suspension version is more manageable, but the trade off is a poorer suspension feel.
@@justthewayitis the GS became popular simply because of ‘ the long way round’ and all the Charlie’s going the long way to Tescos on a Sunday … but quite why ‘everyone’ needs a heavy off road bike is beyond me as I don’t see fields covered in tents with bikes but the XR as a road machine , performance, comfort makes sense but all it’s lacking is a shaft . I’ve no doubt BMW know this but would be making competition for themselves by releasing such a bike , but with CF MOTO gaining ground then maybe in a few years BMW will make such a bike to maintain sales
It’s also probably why they didn’t add shift-cam from the RR to the XR, that would reduce the midrange gap between both models. lol, if you had been at this years ABR festival in June, as I was, you would have seen fields and fields of bikers camping 🏕️. Yes the XR is not for everyone or a replacement for my GS, but it was a lot of fun and made me think !.
Have a great weekend
Carl
Not a GS replacement for me, too tall. I was keen for one, but the R1300GS with Adaptive Vehicle Height and low seat is just right for us aging shorties.
lol 😉😊. Have a great Sunday
That is a bit of a weakness - it is quite tall, and o found that the low suspension version is more manageable, but the trade off is a poorer suspension feel.
Nice bike but I wouldn't swap it for my R1300GS which we find absolutely brilliant on tour and very comfortable and a real do it all bike
Hi John, good evening, I think many new GS owners will agree with you. Best wishes Carl 🙋🏻♂️
When they throw a shaft on the XR series … BMW will have ‘the ultimate bike’
Hi Steve , interesting thought 💭👍
But I do understand your comments 🙋🏻♂️.
Have a great Sunday
@@justthewayitis there are fields with LADA owners , cheese rolling and bird watching throughout the summer and a few bikers ‘tenting’ for a night is a far cry from Charlie riding around the world
😉
That bike needed replacing carl too many issues that bm still havent solved and thats not good enough at the price the pegs are in the way when staionary its top heavy the thrittle response isnt good gsa is way better
Hi Austin, well they seem to be going in the right direction at least, on this one the throttle control was crisp and clean no jerky or erratic application. Have a good weekend 👍
i want a thrittle
@@justthewayitis on my way to boston mate touring the states
@@gerryryan2302 thrittle aha my typos are shocking
Well enjoy your adventure 👍
BUT this bike doesn't have shaft drive and hydraulic clutch...I'll keep my 1250GS!
Rob… lol 🙋🏻♂️
It’s nowhere near an alternative to the GS.
It’s a great bike, fast with a comfortable riding position but it’s basically an RR with an upright riding position and more clearance but I wouldn’t think of taking that thing off road, not even dirt graded roads!
Hi Lloyd, yes totally agree I didn’t mean it as a true adventure alternative. As you say not even dirt roads.
at the end its really all the same just more money needed
Well they are getting more expensive that is for sure, at this rate within a couple years no one will be able to afford them.
