New Graphics Settings for MSFS 2020 | Better FPS & Stutter Free Performance
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 28 ส.ค. 2023
- Its been almost a year since I changed by graphics settings, but with more Sim Updates and Fenix V2 being released, I noticed a few things I could do in order to get of stutters and have the sim looking fantastic with improved FPS as well. This is based on my PC:-
PC Specs:
Ryzen 7 3700X
GeForce RTX 3060
32gb RAM (3200hz)
1TB Hard Drive (SSD)
1080 Resolution

I applied your setting to my system which is almost identical (I'm using an i5 CPU) and the increase in FPS and graphic visuals are unbelievable, I didn't think such visual immersion was possible. A big thanks - keep up the great videos!
For me, a consistent 50-60 fps will make me happy. I often fly with lower than 40fps and then I notice alot of stuttering. Especially on approach and short final.
Im playing on a resolution of 3840x1600 with a 5900x and 6800xt gpu.
My settings are a mix of high and ultra.
I hope msfs 2024 will give us better improved ground performance.
You gotta show performace inside the cockpit. Thats where it drops a lot
I know right and with a decent add on aircraft at a dense airport with traffic. Flying at 8000ft over a city outside with default A320 any system will give decent performance. They calibrated it that way.
That's true but to get a fair side by side comparison you need a vanilla approach. Adding the AI traffic and weather etc can skew the results as the levels of detail would be different every time.
That’s weird lol for me FPS seems to rise inside the cockpit than outside
@@MisterRafitasame. Especially on the ground
I did a 4000ft pattern at LAX in a fbw a320, I can tell you it will hold 30 fps and mine dropped to 25 in the airport, there are little frame drops but it weren’t game breaking like my old settings
My specs are i5 11300H RTX3050ti mobile, 16gb ddr4, 2tb hdd
This is a great insight. I run triple 55's and for VFR, low-altitude flying anything under 40fps is too low on the side monitors as the scenery can pass a little quicker. One of the biggest things I've done in the past few weeks is toy around with upscaling to 4K. It's made a nice difference in FPS.
Thanks so much for your settings guide. I'm on an Ultrawide and windowed mode has seemed to reduce most of the micro stutters I was having! I can't believe the difference!
Thanks a lot buddy , i have a similair system as yours and i did not know it could run so smooth on fs2020 anymore. Back to flying to me ! thanks for sharing your time!
I run a nvida 24gb 3090 i had all sorts of issues with the latest nvida updates?
Alot of head scratches playing with settings suffered alot of stutter issues.
Then watched your tutorial.
What a difference its made just changing a few things.
Has made a huge difference.
30 to 35 fps now literally zero stutter thanks for the video
I sold my 13900K, RTX 4090 and bought the same computer as yours. Now I have configured everything as you said. Oh my goodness. Now I have a stable 40 fps. It is so beautiful. Thank you for everything.
thanks for making this video! i currently run the sim on a high (ish) end gaming laptop and most of the time it works fine on medium, some high settings, i have recently been thinking about getting a 3060 so this video was a great help!
Yes, the FPS obsession is a hangover from FSX
Did you make any changes to the NVIDA Control Panel Defaults?
For people still using the V-Sync setting in MSFS. Please turn it off. If you do experience screen tearing, go into the Nvidia Control Panel and set the V-Sync option to 'Fast' and lock your frame rate. Got a huge performance boost. I've locked my frame rate to 30fps. Half of my monitor Hz which is 60Hz. i5 9600K GTX1660.
This used to work for me, not anymore for some reason
V-Sync in the game works undoubtedly best for me in combination with G-sync, I use 33% of my monitor refrechrate (144Hz) which gives me 48 fps, and the game has never run better.
I find its when panning the camera round in the cockpit especially with traffic i find it drops the most.
Thank you for the settings. On i7-13700K, 32go RAM, 1TB SSD, GTX 3060TI work very fine with around 55 to 60 fps.
Thank you for speaking sensibly about 30fps being acceptable, which I agree with so long as it's consistent.
Upgraded from an i7 4790k + 1070 to 7800X3D + 4090 = mind blown. Coming into EGLL inibuilds on either Vatsim or offline using PSXT / Real Traffic using FSLTL at 60 FPS using Frame Generation it’s a beautiful sight and all of this at 4K resolution. On my old rig I struggled to hold 20 FPS on final never mind 30. 60FPS is significantly smoother than 30 imo.
it feels good to upgrade right 😁
@@fortel7939 Now divorced for spending the new kitchen upgrade money on a new pc. Haha
@@TeaBreak. It was worth it don't worry 😂
@@fortel7939 The benefit of a pc over an Apple product. Covert upgrades. Lol
@@TeaBreak. Exactly 😅
Excellent, i was waiting for this video. Still would be interested if you made changes in the nvidia control panel (limit on FPS, etc.). Thx
I still wish the photogrammetry worked better for the cities. I find I have to turn it off for that to get better performance.
Thank you for pointing this out again. FPS is not the thing one is after in flightsim. Smoothness is way more important. For my med spec system I still stick to the old flightsim rule from back in the FSX days to limit the frames to half of the monitor refresh rate. So for me that means 30 FPS locked in nvidea inspector is giving me everything I need in terms of visuals and smoothness. Have tried a lot over the years and the main reason for stuttering on my systems seemed to be the high fluctuations of frames when unlimited, so I eliminated that culprit. Mainly running on medium to high settings it gives me these 30 frames nearly anytime anywhere. Only thing btw on ultra is clouds as this is the immersion bringer in my view.
I can't be happier if I get 30-35 FPS. My minimum is a pretty solid 25. My graphics card is an older GTX1070. My system altogether is over 5 years old. Still runs good. It's a Dell, Alienware. No complaints.
Call me captain obvious but what also made a BIG difference with stutters during landing - in my case - was that my internet connection was already loaded by my GF’s Netflix streaming. I didn’t thought of the sheer gigantic data which seems to be needed especially during landing (or if you need to load a higher level of detail in general). So if you’re still having issues after watching this video, and maybe not the best internet connection of the world, consider checking that your MSFS is able to suck as many data as it needs. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Just wanted to share my experience in addition to this absolute fine content here with you guys.
40FPS is ideal for me, just slightly better than standard, enough to be smooth and still get good precision for landing
Yes, but actually the more important thing for me is that it doesn't freeze. I'd rather fly at a constant 30fps than 50fps that is constantly dropping.
Thanks for the informative video. I am struck by how similar our systems are! I run on similar settings but have been getting some stutters at detailed airports plus some long pauses. I have recently reinstalled Windows 10 and MSFS due to registry problems so will make some tweaks and see how your settings are on my similar system. Many thanks
60 FPS is mandatory for me. You can really feel the difference
To achieve 60 fps in MSFS you need either a 3000€ PC or shitty graphic settings. Cinema films are displayed at 24 FPS in Europe as a standard. You need 60 fps or more to play faster paced games, but if your success in MSFS depends on the difference between 30 and 60 fps, you re doing something wrong.
@@FernandoLXIX you can stick to 30fps if your eyes can’t detect the difference. There is some people that don’t even notice. But some people notice the difference. I can.
Congrats. Keep playing at 60 FPS with awful graphics👍 @@adrianzowe
@@FernandoLXIX hahahahaha, yeah, awful awful graphics… 😂😂😂
Challenge comes with higher say 2k triple monitors. The frame generation also only works with the middle screen I understand which I was suprised by.
Frame generation is a gift from god. I'm running Triple 4k and could only do this with frame gan, DLSS & upscaling.
Thank you for the update :D
Which version of Nvidia driver did you installed?
I spent a couple of days tweaking settings in desktop and VR (HP Reverb G2) when I bought my new PC with a 4090 and I've not tweaked the settings since. Destop is on Ultra and PCVR is mostly Ultra with one or two concessions. Flies beautifully everywhere I go. So glad that tweaking is a thing of the past. Get a 4090, you won't regret it.
Water Waves: you could set it to Medium. Visual difference is noticable, but I don't care about water.
Volumetric Clouds: Ultra will affect FPS. I think "High" clouds look cool as well.
Render scaling can lower your FPS drastically, because game renders in higher resolution.
So if you're CPU bottlenecked, what settings would you turn down for better performance?
In my experience and other articles I found traffic (boats, cars) (ki aircraft too but they may be needed) and most importantly terrain and object level of detail. Those have the highest impact on the cpu. I'm running 60 and 80 with my older i7-6700k
100% on the money. Turn these things all down. Especially traffic and LOD
@@MrMarcelA380
basically anything above 20fps for me is fine, I don't mind lower fps. I just want to avoid any stutters
30 fps is the target anything over is just icing on the cake
30 fps is not enough with fast moving objects left and right as during taxiing. It's also way too low when panning the camera. 60 is a minimum imho. 120 fps is preferred.
i did lower down some of these setting but THANK YOU you have increased my fps from 25fps to 35-45 fps thanks
Well iv not be on for some time 4 months in VR. What a difference in quality now in 3080ti and HP reverb G2 its now crystal for me and new Nvidia set no stutter at all in vr set to ultra. I honestly though it was the end with G2 but was i wrong, its amazing experience now.
I have a 3070 gpu. If I change from TAA to DLSS I get a large increase in framerates. Every place, every plane, every weather, every preset render level. It never fails on my computer for many months now that DLSS 2 works a miracle.
I’ve been trying for years to get this sim working rtx3090ti the works and still shuddered. But today major break through. 84 fps in vr. Amazing. 120 out of vr . I7 12900 kaby lake 32 fb ram. Been a nightmare. Basically watched TH-cam but I think the traffic is the biggest killed
Did you remove the default Asobo JFK airport to install inibuilds JFK add on? In case is that necessary?
Yes I did. Need to do this to avoid conflict.
I put your graphic setting and it made mine better I think thank you
I'm currently in the long-term process of flying an ultralight across North America (a childhood dream), so the VFR experience is paramount. I can tolerate the sim freezing now and then (it usually only lasts 10 - 15 secs), but studdering is almost impossible to deal with. I have a nice gaming PC, but for some reason, the best FPS I can get is only in the mid 20s (even at the LOWEST graphics settings). I've tried everything. Sigh.
I usually target 25-30 seconds per frame so I still have time for some much needed info when I do a slideshow.
@Higashitory - 25→30 seconds PER FRAME?!?!? I'd be asleep! Maybe you mean 25→30 frames per second🙂
My point being 😂 i lag so much at times haha
To be honest, I think we're a decade past the whole "30fps is enough" argument. It's not. 30fps is a choppy mess when everybody uses =60hz or >60hz monitors.
144FPS will certainly be unachievable for most, though that's what i get with a 4090 and frame generation in GA aircraft. However, achieving a consistent 60FPS should absolutely be achievable and I think flight sim developers (Asobo, Laminar) should be striving for good performance rather than taking the shortcut of "X FPS is enough for flight sims".
I have applied 80% or more of Easyjetsimpilot's Graphics settings and experienced performance improvements with almost no loss in quality - cheers.
However, I have noticed 2 changes, and am hoping someone can advise which Graphics settings control them:
1. Landing light cones are no longer projected
2. Some black textures are displayed at Frankfurt EDDF airport for either buildings or trees.
Btw, if you upgraded to the 5800x3d you would see a big performance increase, especially at busy airports in urban areas where the CPU is the bottleneck. I bet that 35-36 would be more like 45+ fps and significantly less stutters.
I agreed the 5800X3D was the biggest game changer for me. Smoother performance and higher average frame rate.
Works nicely with my RX6800.
@@caribbaviator7058 would like to know your settings i have 5800x3d and 4070ti and i get alot of stuttering
@@tf6shawnn Similar sad story here. 5800x3d and 3080ti...FPS is pretty good even in Manhattan, but it stutters at certain points. I'm wondering if it's due to internet loading of scenery. I have off screen caching turned up to ultra (and have tried it at other settings), but it always seems to stutter at about the same points in the sky when I fly through it.
@@Pedro-jc4wl I have the exact same CPU and GPU. FPS is okay, but I get stuttering flying around Manhattan area. Do you?
yea kinda frustrating that a 4070ti paired with the 5800x3d isnt enough to run msfs smoothly@@canadave
Things move that quickly in the Tornado or Eurofighter. 😉
Something I hate about 60+ fps is when I have it in the sim, it makes 30 fps look horrible. I used the sim on Xbox for 2 years and never once thought, “this 30 fps looks bad, I want 60”. I thought 30 was perfectly fine but when I switched to pc and got 60+ with dlss frame gen, if I’m ever under 60 for some reason, it looks awful to me. It’s the same with resolution, I play 1440p but when I switch to 1080, it looks awful. I just ignore the fps from resolution and stay at 1440, but either way I still usually get 40-50 fps (80-100 with frame gen)
i agree totally, 30fps is a mess especially when using ai traffic and airport add ons. its fine in small aircraft but airliners 30fps isnt good enough. i can get between 50-60 on 2080super and 13600k and its fine in 1440p but can still get choppy in busy cities on landing. developers need a kick and give us 60fps everywhere on mid range equipment.
@@AG3DG4MER it should be much better with Msfs 2024.
I get some insane stuttering when om final approach, and I am getting pretty fed up with it. It drops down to under 10 fps at ~500 feet. I have got my graphics settings even lower than yours and I have a rx 6700 xt and r5 5600. Which should be able to get the same performance if not more than your system. How is this possible?
Apparently, you should turn up Terrain LOD and/or object LOD to get rid of these stutters. It's caused by the cpu being overloaded with too much during approach.
I aim for about 40~50 fps, but will be happy with 30 if need be.
I’m curious how you set the graphics, so you could see the Manhattan Skyline from KJFK? I’m not able to do that. I have to fly about 1/2 way from JFK to Manhattan, before the buildings pop up.
Not all hero's wear capes brotha!
And what are your fps in the cockpit and on Vatsim? that's what interests us.
38 fps have been the minimum target for me to achieve smooth enough panning in cockpit, I run at locked 48 fps since my latest computer upgrade.
Stock msfs settings, high end preset, and ultra clouds, nets me 60-70 fps with my RTX 3060 and Ryzen 7 5800x3D
For me, using a headtracker, 30FPS is the absolute minimum. I usually aim at 33-35 FPS, and a really good experience starts at 40FPS.
IniBuilds JFK is the ultimate test.Very demanding airport!
I let the Nvidia Experience app make my settings. I have a 3080 and my FR is about the same as yours although I tend to stay away from Manhattan. Thanks for sharing!
Cheers Gav!
Great video, thanks. I am wondering what hz you are running for your monitor(s)? I have 3 curved 32 inch monitors at 144 hz and a 32 inch tv at 60 hz. Any suggestions for those settings would be appreciated.
Thanks Gavin! Graphic settings checked. At 40 fps now.
Why dont you utilize DLSS? Choose 1440p ingame with dlss quality mode and select in the drivers dsr factor 1,78 dl with 40% smoothening.
You will have better graphics and more fps!
I personaly aim for 60 fps with the maximum visuel fidelity i can get with holding this 60 fps as best as possible. Though i did play msfs with locked 30 fps before on an older pc and that was fine too.
60fps is my sweet spot Gav👍
This video is worthless without VR settings.
I'm kidding!!! 😀Great job on the video. It's always good to see how just little tweaks here and there can make such a huge difference. I'm also sure that some, if not all, of these can be applicable to VR users.
I'm still on a GTX 1070 but I more or less use your settings just scaled down. Depending on where I am the frames stuttering can't be prevented. Then again, with such an old card I can still fly well. I've locked the frames to 30fps in the nvidia control panel and I usually get a good 25-30fps except for landing in Newark or Heathrow.
What's the resolution of your monitor?
@@g-locmedia 1080p
Unfortunately, NVIDIA locks out all their best features to newer cards. Not sure if you'd even get and form of DLSS on that. Have you turned on "Prefer Maximum Performance" in the NVIDIA options?
@@maggou90
Without headtracking i am ok with 50ish fps, with headtracking you are adding fast movements and well, 120Hz is the name of my Monitor/TV... Cheers 💙
I am absolutely fine with any fps above 25. And I use JFK plus overflying Manhattan as test range too.
for me drown camera stutters just a bit at 30 fps, for me its gotta be 60 fps for it to run smooth, specs, i5 13600k, ddr5 CL32 32gb 6400mhz, samsung 980 pro 1TB, intel arc a770 16gb, great post
For me it's more like 40 fps. 30 is way too low, especially when looking around.
Thx for this update! I have one question though, did you change anything in the Nvidia configuration manager (e.g. power management settings) of is everything set to default?
Hi gabin! Personally I think 30 fps y less immersive than at 60 mostly at app phase and t/o.
At 30 fps on that phases is kinda very slow. in real life those phases are very fastest
On the other hand at 30 fps if your monitor can’t be set to 30hz you will have a lot of stutters
So 30hz 30 fps
60hz 60 fps
35 hz 35 fps (to don have any stutter)
Sadly I could see a lot of stutters on your video before and after look close left or right and let the camera there you will found your stutters
I would recommend to you set your monitor at 30hz if able, if not only through nvidia control panel vsync half
Humble opinion
Hey Gav. Thanks for the video. Do you have your sim locked in the Nvidia Control Panel? Cheers
60 FPS appreciated 😊 I d like to heave enough headroom.
Hello. I have set the exact same settings that you showed us in the video and everything was perfect and the next day I got a lot of stutters when I tried to play and I couldn’t solve the issue. At this point any type of information would be helpful for me. Another thing that I want to say is that I also got a lot of gpu usage and cpu compared to before when everything was nice and stable, I did not change any settings , I just installed some airports. In case this is because of the airports, can I remove them from the community folder when I don’t use them and when I need them I can put them back, will they still work if they are payware?
I have copied your setting before and got a much improved fps. Funnily enough, today I started msfs and my fps had dropped from mid 20s to 10 - 15, why I have no idea.
I have used your settings and got a ridiculous 52 fps but then I found I had change the Anti-Aliasing to TAA, otherwise number a words are blurred, guess what the fps dropped to 24 fps. I will stick at it and see if there are any more things I can do.
Thank you, helped me alot 🎉
Thanks for this video. Your settings were ok for me until i jumped back into the cockpit then they dropped from 32 fps to 25 fps but a little tweak here and there and its made a big difference coming into land. No stutters at Gatwick 👍
i got 35-40 fps with this confg when my previous configuration was awful. Thx!
Anywhere between 20-25fps is good enough for me. Any higher is a bonus
i don’t understand how i can apply these same exact setting from the video to a slightly better system and i’m not even getting half of the FPS seen in this video. same exact addons over NYC in the asobo a320
In the early days of flight sims, 25FPS was considered the goal to reach. 30FPS is plenty. Anything more is wasted on a flight sim.
Another great informative vid, but - why are the engines in the Airbus speeding up/slowing down at a VERY fast rate, then going into reverse? I'm seeing lots of stuttering in your vids at 2:50 and 5:10, so anything below 40fps seems unacceptable, to me. At 6:20 at c45fps it's fine.
Nice video. Will try and replicate on my machine. Cheers👍
i get my new cpu (ryzen 5 5600x) and new gpu (rtx 4060) next week.
upgrading from ryzen 5 1600 and gtx 1660 super. can't wait to try out
30 fps sucks when you have an eye tracker to look around. 60 is really noticeably better.
The everytime question since MSFS started: Low resolution and high/ultra sim settings (like you) -》FHD gives us 2 million pixel OR high resolution in 4k with 8 million pixel und lower sim settings !!?? What gives you the best balance for performance (no stutter) and sim grafic look?? After 2 years, I have no answer for me ....right now, I use 4k with DLSS balance on an triple 42" sony HDR 10 setting (yes, with blurry cockpit indication, but really less). It gives (for me) the best grafic immersion and kind of performance on my preferred IFR airliner ops (right now). Let's see, what the future will bring (to my mind) :))
30fps might be enough to play, but for me, I really enjoy a smoothe experience, its easy on the eyes and yuou have less noticeable input lag
Hello friend,
what setting uses more gpu than cpu ? I have ryzen 5 5500 cpu (it's not so strong), but i have rtx 4060 and 28 go ram; what can set high and what low in the graphics settings please ? Can you help me ?
May I ask you what are your experiment settings? Do you have everything turned off or do you have something on?
Strange🤔, I have the same hardware except the Ryzen, mine is the Ryzen 5 6 cores but top of the line for those but 22 fps in solid cloud over Manhattan with these settings
HDR 10. highly recommended
Below 45FPS it stutters, if you change the view with alt+1-0 Above that value, its a smooth and very harmonic move. Thats the reason why i prefer 45 or above. Try it, and you will know what i mean... ;)
Running in Window mode also takes away from performance. If you run it fullscreen it dedicates more resources to the sim.
That's true. I only run in windows mode because I'm streaming to have things I drag in/out of view.

its funny how systems differ. I have a RTX3060 and with TAA on these setting kill my fps and smoothness. Switching back to DLSS / balanced and Nvidia reflex low latency ON my fps improve by about 50%! I guess it also depends on what settings you have running on your nvidia control panel.

Hi. I wonder why still you do not use Directx12 and Dlss frame generation. 30fps is not enough at all when you have an external view. I am satisfied when I have 80fps with frame generation. ( I have 4090). All ultimate and 4k with even upscaling to 6k.
I'm kinda new to this. How do you get those amazing exterior moving-camera shots? (like at the 1;30 mark)
My 4090 is limited at 40 anytime, every sim every game. Don't need more. Before this update the fps went up and down, sometimes even as low as 10 or 15! So I look forward to this update. I also use JFK for benchmarking my tweaks. :)
But..ah, 2:35 Where is that? Need to visit that place?
I honestly can't remember.
First of all, thank you very much for your information, I have a question; fps in the range 35-45 but still red why?
Hi. Using your settings but had to scale down object detail distance to 100. 9700k @ 5.1ghz and 3090. Which is odd as spec wise my system should be better if anything?
