Many of you asked me to draw a comparison between German and Austrian. For this reason I did some research, watched a lot of Austrian TH-cam videos and prepared a video for you guys. Not only will I give you an insight about the differences of the two accents, I'll also speak Austrian myself - in a lousy way, but hey, I tried my best! Have fun with the video! :) I hope it is both educational and funny!

Jetzt macht die ein Video über Österreicher und Deutsche. Dabei ist das doch ein und dasselbe. Was ist da der Vorteil? Ich mag ja beide. Wir sind doch nicht so unterschiedlich! Und was hat die überhaupt für ein Kleid an? Nein, das schaut nicht gut aus! Du, ich hab so einen ekligen Geschmack im Mund. Ein Zuckerl (Bonbon) fände ich urleiwand (prima).

Wir Vorarlberger sprechen mehr Deutsches Deutsch.
Als Trixi österreichische TH-camr erwähnt hat, viel mir sofort Klein aber Hannah ein und siehe da, sie hat sogar kommentiert :D
Well, obviously we Austrians have some very very specific sense and idea of our pronunciation and usually am amazed at how Germans fail miserably trying to speak like an Austrian.
That being said - and while her Austrian is trying to be strictly Viennese - she is actually quite good.
Some words are pretty off, some are pretty close. Every Austrian would notice instantly after the very word that she‘s clearly faking the dialect, but kudos to her overall.
Most importantly, for every non-native-Austrian this is some really good work here to try to touch the surface here and learn about it, cause we Austrians would fail explaining it in an understandable way.
Lukas T in our defense Austrians don’t know how to speak Hochdeutsch either. When you guys think that you are speaking Hochdeutsch you simply stop using explicitly Austrian words but your pronunciation is all over the place. It’s not a competition though I love Austrians and we are alike in many ways.

Imho that's only half of the truth.
I have absolutely no problem speaking the german german (even with accent) apart from very few words.
Germans already have issues with austrian hochdeutsch and it gets completely confusing when the full dialect kicks in.
I don't like how you claim to have the only hochdeutsch. It's simply not true.
Your pronouciation of "ig" which turns to "ich" (König - Könich) or China - Schina really freaks me out.
Both is "hochdeutsch" tho and has nothing to do with dialects.

While my German teachers in high school and college studied in northern Germany and I essentially learned the Hannover/Hamburg style of German, I found Austrian German (around Salzburg) much easier to understand. It seemed a bit slower in pace. I found northern German way too fast, especially numbers. Which when you’re in a shop and they rattle off the price to you, it can be overwhelming.

I feel like the Austrian accent is heavily influenced by immigrants from the Austro-Hungarian times. For example the -ig and the ch is very Czechoslovak while the a and ie are more Hungarian

Your English is absolutely perfect. Your transition from one language to the other is beautiful. I would love to be taught German by you, because your ear can really tune into the nuances. Super human hearing! I'm a huge fan and just love ALL your content. Oh, and your humor helps me in remembering much more than I have in the past, it's genuinely much appreciated.
Im Video wird vor allem Wienerisch dargestellt - das ist ein Dialekt und von denen haben wir sehr viele. Das wir auch Hochdeutsch (nur eben in Österreichischer version) sprechen, kommt aus dem Video nicht wirklich hervor ^^
Doch, an einer stelle sage ich sogar, dass es viele Dialekte gibt und viele Österreicher nahezu Deutsch sprechen. :)
Das Österreichische Hochdeutsch ist aber eben kein Deutsches Hochdeutsch, und wird von dir wahrscheinlich als Dialekt wahrgenommen.
Wieso sollte es von mir als Dialekt wargenommen werden? Eigentlich sprechen wir genau so wie ihr, nur mit manchen anderen Wörtern (Beistirch, das geht sich nicht aus, ...) und manchmal unterscheidet sich eben die Ausprache ein bisschen, aber nicht so stark, das es in einen Dialekt gehen würde. Übertriebenes Beispiel: Das Wort Gewesen sprechen Deutsche und Österreicher so aus, nur halt mit leicht anderem "Akzent". Ein Dialekt wäre dann das Vorarlbergerische "Xi" oder "Gsi", welches das Gleiche bedeutet.
Der Kabarettist Emil Steinberger erzählte eine Anekdote. Er nahm irrtümlich an, dass die Deutschen das Wort "zügeln" genauso benutzen, wie die Schweizer und war überrascht, dass es kein Hochdeutsch war und die Deutschen eben "umziehen" sagen, wenn sie die Wohnung wechseln.
Nun ja, manches ist halt Akzent und irgendwie eher ein Unterschied, wie zwischen britischem, amerikanischen und australischen Englisch.
Letztlich ist Hochdeutsch eben der kleinste gemeinsame Nenner, Österreicher haben meist bei ausländischen Filmen Synchronisationen in norddeutschem Hochdeutsch, mir bekannte Ausnahmen haben eher marketingtechnische Gründe, wenn man für den österreichischen Markt, eine Synchron-Rolle mit einem österreichischen Schauspieler besetzt, um diesen dann durch die Talkshows touren zu lassen (ich beziehe mich da auf Shrek 2 und die "gute" Fee, finde aber, dass das märchenhafte durch die österreichische Stimme besser ausgedrückt wird)

I feel you did a really good job. You duplicated many of the sounds I heard from my host family, while I studied in Bregenz. In addition, they would frequently use "i" for ich and "roschen" instead of "gehen....zu Fuss/treten". Also for whatever reason, they said die Rille/Rilla instead of die Kirche. So, "ich gehe in die Kirche hinein/ich trete in die Kirche hinein" became "i rosch' in de Rilla."

I grew up with my best friend living next door to me. He is Austrian-Bavarian and couldn't speak English. I am South African, speaking English as my first language and I couldn't speak German. So we subsequently taught each other our respective language and the German I learnt to speak was a mix of Steirmark accent with Bavarian on the other end. So this was really special for me, noting the subtle differences that I learned to speak but didn't understand how these differed from hoch-Deutsch that I subsequently took at high school.
I love the subtle variances in the Austrian and Bavarian accents over all others, purely because it has fantastic childhood memories. I became fluent at around age 7, as was he in English and we still speak (he being back in Austria) in relatively fluent German.
Östereichisch ist auch mein lieblings Deutsch ;)

Die Dialekte in Westösterreich (Tirol) hören sich wie eine Mischung aus Schwäbisch und Bayrisch an. Im Salzburger Raum ist der Tonfall auch eher Bayrisch als Wienerisch. Nur im Osten von Österreich bzw. in der Region Wien wird dieses typische Österreichisch gesprochen, das in Deutschland exemplarisch für Österreichischen Dialekt ist. Mir gefällt Österreichisch aber besser als Bayrisch, da es weicher ist.
Alle in Österreich gesprochenen Dialekte mit Ausnahme des Vorarlbergerischen klingen Bairisch. Warum? Weil es Bairisch ist.

The dialects of Bavaria - at least the ones from the regions of Upper and Lower Bavaria - and Austria - except the ones of Vorarlberg - are closely related. From a language historical point of view, both are sort of Bavarian dialects and share the same roots.
As a German from Bavaria, I like Austrians and love the way they talk.

Es gibt 9 österreichische Dialekte und dann gibt es Österreichisch. Wenn es dir besser gefällt, kannst du es auch österreichisches Deutsch nennen. Das ist Österreichisch ohne Dialekt. Ich weiß, manchen Deutschen gefällt das nicht (warum auch immer) aber österreichisches Deutsch ist eben sehr anders als deutsches Deutsch. Angefangen bei den ganzen Begriffen, die die Deutschen im Leben noch nicht gehört haben (und andersherum) bis zu der Betonung. Österreichisch ist viel weicher als Deutsch und wir betonen manche Wörter auch ganz anders.
Es gibt 9 Bundesländer. Und innerhalb jedes Bundeslandes sprechen die Leute auch ein bisschen anders.

+Middle Earth Nur 9 Dialekte, in was für einem Österreich lebst du denn? Allein in Tirol hat fast jedes Tal seinen eigenen Dialekt. Aber was das "Hoch-Österreichisch" oder auch "Österreichisches Deutsch" würd ich sagen das es sich von Hoch-Deutsch nicht alll zu sehr unterscheidet abgesehen von einigen Begriffen und teilweise anderer Betonung.
Ich hätte wohl besser sagen sollen, 9 offizielle Dialekte. Aber du hast recht, jede Gegend hat ihren eigen Dialekt.
Und natürlich ist Österreichisches Deutsch nicht viel anders als Deutsches Deutsch, aber es gibt viele Wörter oder Phrasen in Österreich die man in DE nicht kennt, und andersrum genauso. Und, wie du richtig sagst, betonen die Ö. manche Wörter anders als die Deutschen

Very well done, Tricksy! I've heard several German dialects and recently even the Austrian dialect. The Austrian longer vowels (e.g. Mutter) and softer consonants (again, e.g. Mutter) are quite apparent. I can't wait for the video on Swiss German. Keep up the good work! Cheers, Govind

Ui, da hast du ein paar Dinge vermischt, und damit deine Zuseher wohl mehr verwirrt als informiert: 1. Gibt es österreichisches Hochdeutsch, das vom Österreichischen Wörterbuch definiert ist. - Dabei gibt es nicht nur unterschiedliche Begriffe, sondern auch einige grammatikalische Differenzen (z.B. Artikel) zum deutschen Hochdeutsch. Damit ist die korrekte Schriftsprache festgelegt, die österreichweit einheitlich ist.
Daneben gibt es in der gesprochenen Sprache Dialekte, die sich von Region zu Region sehr stark unterscheiden. Deine Verwirrung "sometimes..." rührt vor allem daher, dass du Beispiele ganz unterschiedlicher Dialekte gebracht hast - oft war Wienerisch dabei, sogar mal ein Meidliner L, dann aber wieder Oberösterreichisch (ähnlich dem Bayrischen) oder anderes, das ich nicht wirklich zuordnen konnte. Kärntnerisch und Vorarlbergerisch z.B. würden wieder ganz anders klingen. Ähnlich verwirrend wäre wohl ein Video, in dem du "DIE eine deutsche Umgangssprache" unterrichten willst, und dabei Plattdeutsch und Schwäbisch gleichzeitig präsentierst.
Unterschiedliche Artikel im deutschen Hochdeutsch sind mir neu. Kennst du ein Beispiel?
Also österreichisches hochdeutsch sprechen sie in hauptsächlich im ORF1 und ORF2. Könnte man als gute Referenz benutzen.
@doping1234 Du verwirrst mich ein wenig. Meinst du jetzt Unterschiede zwischen österreichischen Hochdeutsch und deutschem? Da wären Getränke wie z.B. die/das Cola/Fanta/Sprite oder die/das Nutella (deutsch/österreichisch). Oder hast du innerhalb Deutschland gemeint? Das würde für mich aber keinen Sinn machen, weil es in Deutschland ja nur ein Hochdeutsch gibt.

Sorry, aber "lecker" wird in Österreich nur verwendet, um sich über Deutsche lustig zu machen. Es existiert in unserem Sprachgebrauch nicht :D
Falsch, in einigen Regionen wird es verwendet. Bei uns wurde "Gschmackig" zum beispiel nur bei ekeligen Sachen verwendet. (z.B. die Jungs reden über irgendwelche seltsamen Dinge am Esstisch, Kommentar einer weiblichen Person mit verzogenem Gesicht: "Gschmackig".)
Gerade das deutsche Fernsehen hat den österreichischen Dialekt in den letzten Jahrzehnten stark beeinflusst.
+Pashmina Ich kenn gschmackig auch nur als Sarkasmus. Fakt ist, dass lecker in de Gegenden mit sehr starker Mundart nicht existent ist. Ich kenn niemanden, der es wagt lecker zu sagen. Aber in den Großstädten ist der Dialekt eh gestorben, dort wird man es schon sagen.
Des hast guad. Wennst nomoi lecker sogst, kassierst a watsch das da vierzehntog da schädl woglt. :DD

Ich glaub, wenn man ein Video über den österreichischen Dialekt macht, kann man es eh niemandem ganz recht machen. Dafür sind wir Ösis dann doch zu bunt.
Darf ich an der Stelle ohne böse Absicht anmerken, dass Sarkasmus aus dem Griechischen kommt und wörtlich so viel wie "zerfleischen" bzw. als Wort "beißender Spott" heißt und leider viel zu oft mit Ironie verwechselt wird? Sarkasmus ist eine Absicht etwas zu sagen und zielt darauf ab sein Gegenüber verbal zu verletzen oder zu verhöhnen oder seine Position/Meinung zu verspotten und lächerlich zu machen.
Ironie dagegen ist ein sprachliches Mittel, bei der man etwas sagt, aber das Gegenteil meint bzw. sich im Fall der sokratischen Ironie absichtlich dumm stellt um sein Gegenüber in eine Falle zu locken.
So kann Sarkasmus auch offen sein: "Gab es das auch in deiner Größe?" "Das beste an dem Buch war als es endlich zuende war." "Goethe hat keinen anderen Schmerz empfunden, als den beleidigter Eitelkeit."
Und Ironie kann ohne Sarkasmus auskommen, aber da fällt mir momentan kein gutes Beispiel ein. :D
Brilliant video! I was raised in both countries: Germany and Austria, but feel more Austrian in spirit. I love your analogy for the Austrian using "more of the black keys of the piano" as perhaps this is resembling their hardships after WW2. Austria-Hungary was a dominating Imperial power for about 250 years and it shrunk to this small gem full of music, culture and arts, which I think is expressed and channelled in its very own diverse language, that is similar enough to the German language on paper, but it is the many "street and country languages" that keeps this language going and evolving.
Guess you confuse German with Standard German. Deutsch, German is an umbrella term for continental West Germanic dialects and standard languages and included Dutch until 200 years ago. Standard German evolved from the chancellery language "Gemain Teutsch" that was based on Austro-Bavarian and got high prestige because it was used by the imperial Habsburg chancellery in Vienna since the middle of the 15th c.. Luther used it for his Bible translation but modified it by East Central German elements from the "Saxon" chancellery language. So it got northern elements because Central German is in many ways similar to Low German, it's transitional between Low and Upper German. The dominance of Prussia since the 19th c. caused that the North German (former Low German) pronunciation was perceived by many as best. Nethertheless there is the North German pronunciation as in "weg" (away) = "wech" and the South German (Upper German) one as in "weg" = "wek". Upper German also includes Austrian and Swiss German. That said German German doesn't exist at all, because South German pronunciation goes mostly with Upper German Austrian and Swiss German. Because of Gemain Teutsch as basis of Standard German it's closely related to Bavarian/Austrian and more to Swiss German (that has preserved medieval Middle High German pronunciation) than to many other German dialects.

Schon in den ersten 14 Sekunden sage ich gleich als erstes, dass es Umgangssprache und Dialekte gibt. Und dann später noch mal, dass ich mich für das TH-cam-Österreichisch entschieden habe, das ich von den Channels kenne, die ich eben schaue. Du kannst mir natürlich vorwerfen, dass ich nur Wienerisch abgedeckt habe und diese Kritik mag berechtigt sein, aber vorgewarnt habe ich und natürlich ist es für einen Nicht-Österreicher schwierig, die genauen Dialekte zu erkennen und zu differenzieren. :)

Deswegen verstehe ich nicht, warum du Dialekt und Standardsprache durcheinandergewürfelt hast. Du hättest österreichisches Deutsch erläutern können. Dazu gibt es genug Material im Internet.

Bayrischer Dialekt und österreichische Dialekte hören sich übrigens nicht deshalb ähnlich an, weil sie eine Grenze teilen undoder sich beeinflusst haben, sondern weil es dieselbe Dialektfamilie ist: Bairisch.

Austrian and Bavaran languages came from a common language, Austro-Bavarian, that can be traced to 3 other languages: Lombardish, Marcomanish, and Cimbrish, YES! Austro-Bavarian come from 3 other germanic languages, this is why it is so different frm standard German. Austro-Bavarian is also the nearest language related to Old Theutonic/Theutonish (Proto-West-Germanic) and to Proto-Germanic.
Thank you for this video. It explains what I have always thought. I used to get in trouble for my German pronunciation in school (U.S.A.) but my accent was based on what I heard growing up. My mother came from Wuerzburg (Unterfranken) and Franconian German, while not Austrian, has some similarities.

Just for curiosity, where did you do your exams? At official exams like the Goethe exam they normally accept all varieties of every standard German, no matter if Austrian, German or even Swiss one.
I did GCSE German in the UK, they teach Hoch deutsch so anything other than that is classed as wrong

There's only one way to write correct German vocabulary and grammar. Dialects affect the accent, not the spelling, just like in English, were you find tons of dialects, and "accents" too (Scotch, Irish, Cockney anyone?). You must have had poorly educated "German" teachers.

Yeah because she took the classic austrian accents spoken in vienna and lower austria as an example. These are the most iconic. And there she is spot on. But gen z isn't speaking like that anymore anyways. They use a "textbook" german accent, because they probably think they are cool and are heavily influenced by german influencers, you tubers and so on. It is kinda sad though

Ich hätte aber noch einen, meiner Meinung nach großen, Unterschied hinzuzufügen, welchen du nicht behandelt hast. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob es auf ganz Österreich zutrifft, aber zumindest wo ich wohne(Oberösterreich) ist mir aufgesfallen, dass T's fast immer wie D's und P's fast immer wie B's ausgesprochen werden. Zb: "Tür" wird zu "Dia" und "Pokal" zu "Bokal". Dies trägt wahrscheinlich dann auch dazu bei, dass sich österreichisch im Allgemeinen etwas weicher und flüssiger als Standartdeutsch anhört. :)
Your TH-cams are fun to watch, but it finally occurred to me that you're usually able to understand someone using one of the other dialects (assuming one speaks.some dialect of German fluently).
It's like that in the US. Local accents can be pretty dense, but not impossible to understand. And fun to hear.

Great video! From this video and very little else that I have experienced with Austrian, I would say that Austrian is to German what Scouse (Liverpool, England) is to English. It sounds a bit strange to me. It also sounds closer to both Swedish and thick Canadian English. Might I ask: I have noticed differences in the pronunciation of works with 'i,' such as "wirklich" and "viertel." Do you know which region pronounces them more like the letter u? "wurklich" and "furtle"?

Das was die deutschen sagen koennen auch wir sagen und andersrum bis auf ein paar dialektbezogene woerter. wie: oida (hey, bro..., what the hell are you doing) , oide(disrespectfull way of getting attention of an elderly or not so elderly woman), etc etc. Ich habe deutsche freunde und wir koennen perfekt miteinander reden!

Its a shame, that after such a long period we lived with Austrians in one country, we did not get more from that. I mean ... We could be a bilingual country - Czech-German. It would be nice to know German from the parents, without having to learn it the hard way :-(
Unfortunately WW2 and the Nazis destroyed that. I would also love to speak Czech but it's a very difficult language and I don't have enough time for such an adventure.
i think czech and austrian people have plenty in common, just not the language ^.^ ... eg i noticed that, when talking to my friends from the czech republic that a lot of manners (for lack of a better word to describe what i mean) are similar also the ways how to talk to each other. in that regard, i feel much more in sync talking to friends from the czech republic than to friends in germany. with german people a LOT of meanings / things that are meant slightly humorous just get lost
Actually the Viennese dialect has quite a few words, that have a czech origin (as well as Hungarian, Slovene, Jiddish etc.). I had the same experience as minion8. At least between eastern Austrian and Czech humor and the way people generaly act and react to other people are more similar. Eastern Austrians and especially northern and western Germans blend far less well, and thats actually even more noticeable through the common language.

I really tried to learn.... 9 long years..... but it never came to me as English did :-( I guess I dont really deal good with all the rules. So I speak German "nur ein bischen". Thats why I regret we are not more connected to you or Austrians anymore. (Reich times excluded of course :-D )

1. German is a pluricentric language (same like English for example), which means that there are several standards that are considered "correct", depending on where it is used. Therefore you should not oppose "German" to "Austrian" and "Swiss", it would be more correct to call it "German spoken in Germany", "Austrian German" and "Swiss German". Austrian German derived from the Bavarian variety of German and therefore is related to it.
2. There is several regional dialects (which are very old and almost inofficial languages) on the one hand and on the other the Austrian Standard German (which is the language used in newspapers, spoken on state TV etc. and in more formal situations). Although most of your observations are to the point, they are mainly about dialects (and therefore limited to sometimes very small areas). The equivalent in Germany would be giving examples of pronounciation of some dialect spoken in Berlin and considering it applicable to Standard German spoken all over Germany.

I'm from Vorarlberg and tbh we sound terrible.
My Grandmother was from Austria and she spoke High German. I did German lessons in my 7th school year, but I got in a bit of trouble and I was transferred to another school which did not have German lessons. My Grandma said when she was alive that in Vienna they speak High German but I have heard that in the rest of Austria outside Vienna it is like a rural German dialect the German that they speak. Your lessons always remind me of my Grandma, which is nice, she was a very cultured Woman whom I loved very dearly, even though she was very harsh to my Mother.

I'm an American, all of my grandparents and great grandparents on both sides are either from Austria or Germany respectively. I am trying to learn German but now in my 30s it's a challenge! My grandmother whom I was extremely close to, passed away a few years ago and she spoke an Austrian dialect. I am so angry at myself for not having had her teach me, she always wanted me to be proud of my heritage.
I will never learn the dialect my family spoke, but since they all understood German, I can at least learn that. Good video, thanks! 💘
