I'm indebted to this video (and the comments) for making the alternator replacement an almost pain-free experience. Such a crystal-clear description of the steps, as good as any car video I've ever seen, and that's counting ChrisFix. A few tips that may help others: 1) No need to drain the oil. A few ounces of oil will leak out when you remove the filter, but that's it. 2) No need to cut the wire harness clip at the bottom. Just insert a small flat-head screwdriver and slowly pry until it pops out. 3) Make sure you hit that lower bracket with copious amounts of PBlaster. It can be really stuck but once the oil soaks in you can start rocking the alternator back and forth and it will steadily loosen up so you can lift it up and off the bracket. That's the key part of the whole job. 4) Other than that little wrinkle, it's as easy as presented here. 5) I replaced the old one (the bearing seized) with a TYC 2-11011 alternator which was an exact fit. Thanks again!
So I watched watched this, went otuside and took my alternator outof a 2009 Hyundai Accent with very little problems. Other than me needing some WD40 and a little confidence , this video made it relativlley easy. GREAT INFO
I'm considering (probably already committed to) replacing this alternator for a brother, and I am extremely grateful for your quick, detailed, camera-in-focus, simplistic and detailed (yes, that was worth mentioning twice) video. I've seen hundreds of vehicle repair do-it-yourself videos for myself and others. This might very well be the best I've ever seen. It is a breath of fresh air and dissolved any anxiety I could have called upon to second guess my chances to fix it. And I'm subscribed because of it. Thank you. :)
Huge thanks Josh!! Thanks for taking the time to film it and share it with us. The video helped me immensely to change the alternator for my daughter's car. So thanks!! Like others have said, I bypassed the oil drain, went with just removing the filter and worked out good. .
thanks for the video, it helped alot. That locking bolt was a pain in the ass to put back in, it wouldn't line up correctly so I removed the new alternator, cleaned the channelI of that pivot bolt and flipped that pivot bolt 180 degrees also had to remove that long adjust bolt from the locking block to install it. It helps with another person underneath moving the alternator around. 30 minute job ended up taking around 2 hours.
wow what a great video. My son has been calling around for quotes and being told this would be a 4 to 5 hour job at $100 an hour. You literally did this in 10 minutes! Thank you!
@@BudgetMechanicHawaii because of your awesome video we took on the challenge ourselves and it only took about 1 hour. It would have been a lot quicker but we spent a few extra minutes getting the belt off, using a pry bar getting the alternator to come out because it was really stuck in there, getting the belt back on. Other then that it was pretty easy. Thank you!!
So the oil filter was in the way. He had to remove it. If you don't drain the oil first, you end up with a mess. Made that mistake before. Was not a fun cleanup.
@@mcphunque3883 you're going to get oil coming from the filter when loosening regardless. It holds about half a quart in the filter and housing. No need to drain the whole thing especially if they just got the oil changed. Better to replace 1 quart rather than. How ever much to fill. Was a lubetech now a certified tech. just wanna make sure people don't spend more money then they have to when they are more than likely watching this cuz they can't afford the repair at a shop
I checked this out because my alternator won't clear the car. I have actually already attempted to do as shown with the oil filter off and I'm lacking less than an inch of clearance to get it out. I used ramps rather than jackstands. Maybe this is titling the engine backwards and reducing clearance at this point. I can't tell by looking at it whether loosening the engine mount and raising the engine will give any clearance or just slightly reposition where it is getting stuck. I digress. It at least helps a little knowing it should have been a reasonable process and that nothing crazy is required as a matter of course at least. Great advice to compare parts before attempting to install the new one. It's just a matter of time before a DIYer gets burned if they don't make a habit of doing that.
Thanks for your video, nicely done and very helpful. My only wish is that it was as easy as you made it look. But I got it done exactly as you described. Thanks again!!
Could you plz make a video and replacing both power steering lines. I have a 2008 hyundai accent and used this video to replace the alternator on it. My first time as well. Your video was very laid out and step by step I know i could do it myself if you made one!!!!! TY!!!!
great vid everything you did worked great for me other then where the bottom bolt would slid up and out , it would of worked but the bracket on the alternator would not let go of the bracket on the engine . Had to use some brute force and to those that have the same trouble be real careful of useing a crow bar of some sort dont hit the oil filter screw if you slip you might hit the threads and mess them up .
great video, exactly what i needed, keep up the great work. just wondering, can you get the alternator from the wheel well (with wheel well panel removed?) thanks
Probably one of the best how to videos I've seen. Great camera work and great step-by-step explanation. I'm trying to remove a broken alternator bracket but the coolant pump pulley is in the way of removing the top bolt. Do you know how to remove the coolant pump pulley?
@@xchevyimpala69x well it seems my bottom bolt wasn't what I thought it was a nut I thought I was loosening the bolt when I was just loosening a nut off of it and I have no idea how to get it out now
The only question I have is do you have to drain the oil? With the filter above the oil pan, you only loose whats in the filter, which is maybe half a quart.
Hello, first off thank you for this video, very informative and helpful. Second, The person holding the camera did a great job with the angles.Third and the reason for my comment is I had a question regarding the pivot bolt and the arms you were talking about at 6:00, in my vehicle there is a slight wiggling (side to side) where the arms go to each side of the slotted bracket and I was wondering if you had any suggestions to eliminate that play. (outside of buying a new alternator, (those things are expensive lol)). I was thinking of putting a washer in between one arm and the bracket but unsure if that would cause issues. Thoughts?
Eric Zeissler thanks for your encouraging feedback! I would say a little bit of play is probably fine (test this by tightening the pivot bolt without tightening the other bolts and see if alternator will still pivot by hand. It should not) if it’s excessively loose, yes a washer should work (if you can get it in there!). Good luck!
How many wires should be in the wire harness? My alternator provides kess than 12 v and i found only a black wire in the harness. Shouldnt there be two?
i have a 1992 hyundai excel and it has a two prong connector but it cracked and i have the two wires fell out of it and i dont know where they go on the alternator itself..where do they go on the alternator connector which color goes where? one is a thicker and white and blue and one wire is thinner and white
Very good camera work but you did not need to drain out the old oil from the sump, just the filter, but as you did you should really have changed the oil at least. And also drain out the oil from the filter to give the engine a fighting chance.
My car is dead the battery was removed and tested separately and it is still good but the car will not start even after the battery was charged. It may be the alternator but can you still test the alternator on a dead car?Do I need to remove the alternator to test it to see if it is bad ?
if you want to know if the alternator is not working ,start first your car and then remove the negative terminal connector of the battery.if the engine stop it mean your alternator is busted and there is know charging of battery at all and if the car still On or working ,The alternator is ok.but in your case check the starter motor..
I'm not sure why you'd go through the work of draining the oil and not putting on a new filter and fresh oil. Makes no sense to put the old oil back in given that it's almost no extra work to put new oil in.

Changed the alternator on my 1997 Accent without draining the oil. Seems like an extra unnecessary step, doesn't it?
Very good and interesting 👍🏽
Would this be the same on a 07 Hyundai accent?
Did you move the power steering pump to get to that tension bolt?
No I’m able to get to it without touching the p/s pump. But the pump on that car is quite simple to pivot if you find you need the extra room

Does this apply for a 2010 kia soul?
kia soul alternator is easy to remove than this....no need to go under the engine..
See how the filter sits higher than the oil pan? You dont need to drain the oil, pull the filter and stuff a rag there til you put the filter back.
