  • Drone mapping is not so much a commodity anymore as much as it used to be. Drones are being used for all kinds of applications, from inspections to search & rescue, construction progress monitoring, and utility asset management. Drones are becoming an intricate part of everyday operations in so many industries. This video goes over the basics of how to build a drone-based mapping business with an easy-to-use software called Drone Deploy that will take care of every aspect of the business!
    Looking to learn more about drone photogrammetry? Check out our online course: www.pilotbyte.com/course/dron...
    Check out Drone Deploy here: bit.ly/3XLmff5
    ►UPDATE 7/19/22
    Drone Deploy just added support for the DJI Mavic Air 2s. You are now able to fly automated flight missions with the Drone Deploy application with supported IOS devices. Pick up the Air 2s here from Amazon for $999 amzn.to/3PkffBr
    ► Here are a few drones that I recommend for Drone Photogrammetry
    1) DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 (This is the best mapping drone to date, do NOT get the "+" version as it is not supported by mapping software at all): amzn.to/3rMUUe2
    2) DJI Mavic 2 Pro (This is the drone that I started mapping with, still a great option!): amzn.to/3LgeDLc
    3) DJI Air 2 (This just got supported and is the BEST entry drone to get into Drone Photogrammetry, UNDER $800 for Fly More Bundle): amzn.to/3KeDDRs

    I was able to hear a detailed explanation of the drone mapping business! I am now 66 years old, and after retirement as a civil servant in Korea, I started flying drones as a hobby, and after learning 'Premier Pro' for video editing, I am uploading drone videos on TH-cam, and three years ago I qualified as a drone instructor After acquiring it, I give lectures at drone flight academies, and I also work on pest control with agricultural drones. In the meantime, an acquaintance asked if I could make a map of agricultural land, so I watched your TH-cam video to learn how to use Pix4D capture and Drone Deploy, and I learned a lot from your lecture! I will be visiting your channel often to learn more in the future, and I also learned something very useful from this video. Your lecture was the best!

    Dylan: You produce great TH-cam instructional videos. This is the second that I've watched from you and I just subscribed to your channel. Been a long time recreational flyer starting out with DJI's Phantom 1 back in 2013. Since that time I've accumulated a squadron of different DJI models up to the Mavic 3. Finally branching off and obtained Part 107. Your videos are very informational in helping me decide which route to take with regard to commercial operations.

      You can't do accurate drone mapping without a surveyor or photogrammetrist all you can do is, sell fancy 3D maps that have no "claimed" spatial accuracy. Its not as simple as buy a drone, fly drone get clients.

    • @DylanGorman
      @DylanGorman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That’s not entirely true. You can still capture using an RTK drone or processing using PPK methods. It’ll be cheaper yes, accurate yes, but obviously can’t pass it off as a “drone survey”. I have several clients that pay for us to run mapping missions that aren’t geo-referenced with survey grade accuracy. They only care about relative accuracy as they are using it for visual inspections. But again it’s the client that you are selling your services to and what they are looking for. I do disagree with the “you can’t do accurate mapping” statement though because it’s been proven to not be 100% true. I still see your point though. Just my experience!

    • @mountainslapstick6170
      @mountainslapstick6170 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DylanGorman If you can't certify it to be willing to spend millions of dollars to design off of it, then it's not accurate. Can it be close, sure. Accurate.... mmm well no. So again I wouldn't advertise that. Still good video though!

    • @DylanGorman
      @DylanGorman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Fair enough. I guess is really just depends on what the clients looking for then! I appreciate your comments though!

    Dylan, with a small property like this do you ever feel the need to run a separate flight at a different gimbal angle in order to capture better 3D details? I've been experimenting and have been seeing that I have seen some better results doing a flight at -30 degrees but you need to expand the flight path as it can't see the property at the close proximity. Maybe I'm doing something wrong and you can offer some suggestions for achieving the best 3D results. Thanks and love the videos!

      I do photogrammetric mapping of forestry areas. I'll do 5 passes if an area is particularly complex - one nadir (top town), and 4 passes with the camera at a 30-45 degree oblique angel from the cardinal directions.
      However my work isn't making me nearly that much money -- I'm paid a flat salary and the photogrammetry data is ONLY used to plot spray drone flight routes - what the company is paid for is the sprayed acerage.

In my work I’m already using my own utility application to access my iPhone 13 pros LiDAR sensor to scan the interior of residential property for accurate square footage measurements and I use my drone to get exterior pics that you can’t get from the ground . I tested DD last month. I found reporting rather basic. The dimensions of anything I would rather see on my model and not on a separate list. They promise that you can edit your report in the tool itself, but it doesn't work. Maybe if you have the paid version. You can only share the 3d model with customers via a web link (from DD itself). For more than $200 a month, you also have to pay extra for adding GCPs. The app itself is super easy to use.

    • @DylanGorman
      @DylanGorman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m glad you got to test it out. For sharing other files we usually export in geotiff or a shp file for ingesting into other softwares. We do have to enterprise version so we do have extra tools but for the most part we only use those two exports for our clients. The web viewer is cool because we can annotate on it and sent it to our client as well as export a pdf of the report to them too.

    I've had a Mavic 2 Pro over 3yrs now and I only thought my drone's purpose was for amazing Photos and Videos...only today I learned about Drone Mapping...and the very last few seconds I now seen that a 360 degree camera could be used with the Drone. I have had the Samsung 360 camera well over 6yrs and it has barely been used...I recently brought high capacity memory cards on sale back in 2021....so lets say if I really wanted to produce the top quality mapping...Could I implement my phone with a DJI Gimbal, my 360 degree camera and my Mavic 2 Pro? My Mavic 2 Pro has been used mostly in the car scene in very low light at night. I found a purpose for what I have been gathering all these years? Growing up I always told myself I loved reading maps. It'll be cool to show people that I can create a 3-D map of their house and property!

      secondary question if someone does end up seeing my comments:
      Can i use GCP's without a "surveying" drone? aka, could an Air2s use GCPs of a existing surveying team, and get the accurate info? or will I have to purchase a drone similar or better to the phantom rtk?

    • @DylanGorman
      @DylanGorman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For your second question, you can 100% use GCP's without a survey drone. Its done all the time just know that you need to work with a licensed surveyor in order to call it a survey accurate drone map. For your first question, i have heard about the changes, I have not seen the new questions but overall you need to score a 70% or higher in order to pass. I missed 2 questions and still scored a 94% on my exam. I still think it is doable without the new study material but again I haven't seen the new questions just yet.
