Great vid. I notice some hesitation at times from some people in the industry with regard to discussing "how much". This answers many questions I had. One thing I saw with some training courses I did was that they say everything drones can do and make it sound so easy, yet they don't talk about having to know about mapping, thermography, etc. Many talk about how drones are great for x y and z, but make no mention of extra training courses and the like. Especially if you want to be competitive. I recently took a nose dive into the drone industry, got my Part 107, did an in person week long training where they talked about several niches, but I still feel like I'm way behind the curb. As a retired Contractor it was interesting hearing your biz advice, undercutting for example, or lowballing as we call it. Basically there are just two many folks not bright enough to understand you cant charge less than it costs you to provide services legitimately over time with the proper equipment. I would be careful as your industry grows though, coordination between players becomes price fixing at a certain point and has been the downfall of many in various industries.
When I discovered drones (late 2018), I jumped in with both feet going from a Spark to Inspire 2. Then the icing on the cake, I was able to get Level 1 Certified in Thermal for free. So what did I do?, I got my I2 rigged for thermal. I got hired to work an oil tank field in Cushing, OK (huge oil tank farm) and then Covid hit and I lost the job. Probably a good thing because the organization that hired me wasn't the owner of the tank field. Never got another hit for thermal so that ended up being an expensive lesson learned.
I’ve been watching a few of your videos today and want to say thank you, I’ve found them quite informative. I’m new to the drone community, I work for a surveying and mapping company and recently got my part 107. For the company, I’ve had the opportunity to fly a Phantom 4, a Matrice 210 and a WingtraONE gen 2. Our main application for the drone work is basic topography, but you’ve given me some insight to opportunities we’re missing out on as far as what we could be using it for on some of our construction sites. My next step though is hoping to create a side business with drones. I’m still trying to narrow down on a niche. Real estate has been my first thought, but doesn’t hold a lot of interest for me. What you’re doing in commercial real estate seems to resonate with me and my more long term goals(I have a background in heavy equipment/land development and intend to build a business in that scope in the further out future). I’m taking a beginners CAD course in the fall, and I have access to some of the processing software you’ve mentioned(pix4d in particular). Is there any courses or training you would suggest to help me get more focused and trained in that particular niche before diving in and trying to bankroll a side business of my own?
Wow thank you for the awesome comment! I do have a course that I am working on but I’m also putting out little videos to explain and educate so be sure to watch out for all of the content that I am producing! Thank you!

Got my Mavic 3 Pro on order, and upgrading my services from terrestrial to aerial. This vid may well have been outside of my scope, not only in region but also in specialisation, training and extra (rather costly) bits that I don't really need, but it's good to get some kind of idea as to what people charge for drone 'deliverables' services. I had the privilege of flying an AGRAS T10 and a Matrice 600 during my training stint, and I got a really good feel of how these are to fly (and the considerable cost behind them). They're slugs next to the old Phantom 4 Pro I learnt on.

One of the best videos that I have ever watched on TH-cam for drone industry. I totally agree on the 15% from the last bit of the video. Thank you for this video. You really helped me alot and I hope to see more videos like this one in the near future. Respect!
As a filmmaker you often get asked to bring a drone alongside your cinema camera and stuff and capture a couple shots. A reasonable way to price the drone as an extra ontop of your day rate as a camera operator/DP is to have a rate that includes emptying 3 batteries and then carge extra for every following battery. Price it in a way that it doubles your effective hourly rate. If you have a day rate that covers 8 hours of work and 1 battery lasts ~40m, flying a drone with 3 batteries being emptied should cost ~20% extra ontop of the daily rate. The equipment the camera and the drone itself obviously cost extra. For the camera thats about 1/20th of what was needed to purchase it in the first place, for the drone its 1/10th due to how much quicker it becomes outdated and how much more likely it is to completely crash and loose a drone than compared to a camera. Audio and lighting equipment should be 1/40th of what they initially costed you since they basically never become outdated and basically never break either.
Really great breakdown on the billing part of your business. This info is valuable for the newcomers like me. I can't afford paying $200 to $500 a month when I don't have any clients. I have been shopping around when I found dronelink and ODM software. Dylan, you are one of the voices that I really appreciate listening to. I want to know how I and you can guarantee the a level of accuracy one your models without GCPs? Awesome video! You know, it's funny you mentioned offering a free demo to the potential client. I asked about doing that in the Real Estate Photography community as a way to get started in the industry and get your first client. They were all like Do Not Do That! I thought though, it was a solid point of departure to not only build a relationship but your portfolio.
Thanks Dylan especially for all the things you’ve said at the end of your video. I wish that there are many “newcomer pilots” listening to that! 🎉 Greetings from Germany. If there is a chance for me to visit your country again one day, it would be a pleasure to get in touch with you.
I’m going to go with $240 per on-site flight hour and explain that each on-site hour is accompanied by 2-4 hours of processing and travel. This would be for basic camera drone work and additional capabilities would cost + 4x what it costs me to rent those capabilities with insurance.
could you make a video on the types of certifications you can get for specific fields with drones. Or if you have one already, can I get the link to that please.
Good Job Dylan! You laid out a very thorough and practical approach to understanding the market for drone services. You hit some areas I did not think about, which generated some new ideas I might want to pursue as well. Thanks for the information! Subscribed!
Thank you soo very much for your honesty and humility to help others out. Still working on landing my first client. Growing my roots I guess. Videos like this grow my confidence with the business. Branching my drone business off of my fence company business. Again thanks,..
Another good video Dylan. The first video of yours that I watched was the about using the Mini 2 with Maps Made Easy to create orthos, etc. I recently tested it out and it gives you all of the files, but what is the cheapest to view those files? The renderings that it provides through Map Pilot Pro even says "low resolution" so I was curious how to create a deliverable that others can view in high resolution? I downloaded and used Agisoft Metashape and it worked pretty well, but I'm still not sure how someone else would view that without having the software. Also, Drone Deploy is not $300+ per month. If you just want to do a job here and there to get your feet wet, can you use something like Maps Made Easy to obtain similar results? Just curious if there are other budget friendly options for people just getting started, or is Drone Deploy providing something that MME does not? Thanks!
Thank you for the valuable information, Dylan. I am a retired carpenter; I received my part 107 earlier this year, and I have OSHA 10 training, and I would like to get into the construction industry because of my background; what other training is required to work in the construction industry?
So how do you collect your compensation? I understand the breakdown of equipment, insurance, and such, but what methods do you use to collect? Is there a popular invoice app, checks, what is everyone using?
Thank you Dylan! Really appreciated your video information. I've got large goals to move into sophisticated drone work and working hard and enthusiastically at it. Your info gives me great hope!
If everyone keeps undercutting by 15% then the price still keeps dropping as a new low to undercut another 15% appears. This trend of undercutting has gone on for ages in all kinds of industry and the ultimate problem is it ruins the ability to live decently for many people. Even the people undercutting eventually may have to keep dropping prices as more people undercut even their lowest price. Eventually, too many people are not living very well. If only people could realize the full scope of so many things they do that ends up making it bad for everyone....including themselves. But so many things fall into this trend of gradually declining our societies. People don't realize the long-term effects or think about them and they just see what is in front of them and what they can get in a red-hot minute. They don't realize they are hurting themselves too.
FPV is challenging for me as I don't understand that market but if you reach out to a company called Drone Brothers, they are now contracting FPV pilots for work!
GREAT video full of information Dylan. I believe i will be able to take my GRADD 107 training paired with your additional information and have a payback method!
This has always been a sticky problem with the the clients that I work for. What to charge and what products work best for the clients needs. Recently I have been looking into the 3D mapping world but I have been hesitant because of the $$. I know it has been cheaper than ever to get into this and I have been approached by a couple of business to provide the service. I currently have been flying drones commercially for 6 years but mainly just real estate. My go to is my Mavic 2 pro ( yes I know its bottom of the barrel) but its a very capable drone for I currently do. However I know it will not cut it for 3D mapping not even close. So my question is what would you recommend for the next level of drone? That will provide good data points for doing 3D mapping? But still not breaking the bank for a small operation. Thank you in Advance!
Loved this comment as this resonated with me from my roots of getting into mapping. I started out with the Mavic 2 Pro for mapping 3 years ago! It’s enough to get your foot in the door and is perfectly suitable for some general work with contractors on sites where what want spot checks on! M2P and P4Pare what 95% of my pilots are still flying to this day!

Is there a Discord you run to get to know the community a little better?
No but that's not a bad idea!
Very professional and realistic approach!
Very good information thank you for sharing Dylan
Glad you found it helpful!
Really appreciate the insight from this Dylan, thank you!
Amazing content as usual!
“These are expensive” let me set my drone by the pool 😅 good video. Thank you
😁
Very helpful in determining what (and IF) this is something I want to pursue. Good stuff!
How do you go about getting clients/ work? Where does one look? If there is a video addressing this let me know! Great video!
could you make a video on the types of certifications you can get for specific fields with drones. Or if you have one already, can I get the link to that please.
Hi Dylan. Could you do a video on deliverables. Thanks
Great comment! Let me write that video up!
Thanks for sharing all these tips!
Super useful video! Thanks for sharing
Would you recommend editing and software on a iMac
Thanks, for this Video! I an new in this, trying to go in this industry. Still dont know where the beginning is... But i will find.
Excellent! Thank you!,,❤
Incredible insight. Thank you.
Wow you're really helpful thank you 🙏
What if I’m in a city with no competition, how would I go about pricing when beginning in the real estate industry?
Good Job Dylan! You laid out a very thorough and practical approach to understanding the market for drone services. You hit some areas I did not think about, which generated some new ideas I might want to pursue as well. Thanks for the information! Subscribed!
Glad this video helped! Thank you!
Very helpful, thank you!
Great job on this .
Thanks for the advice very informative.
Thank you soo very much for your honesty and humility to help others out. Still working on landing my first client. Growing my roots I guess. Videos like this grow my confidence with the business. Branching my drone business off of my fence company business. Again thanks,..
Awesome video thank you 👍🏼
Thank you as always!
Thank You Bro for the Information...
Welcome
What app do you recommend for a new drone pilot drone base drone up ?
Drone Deploy, if you are on a budget then WEBODM
Thanks!
How much do you charge for a top job
Hello! Great video.
Question what drone related applications are being used in the oil and gas industry?
Thank you for the valuable information, Dylan. I am a retired carpenter; I received my part 107 earlier this year, and I have OSHA 10 training, and I would like to get into the construction industry because of my background; what other training is required to work in the construction industry?
How do you start to do something like this? Do you start a website, and hope for the best, or is there another way? (Real-estate)
So is the regular Mavic 3 better than the cine in regards to zoning?
So how do you collect your compensation? I understand the breakdown of equipment, insurance, and such, but what methods do you use to collect? Is there a popular invoice app, checks, what is everyone using?
That drone sitting so close to the edge of the pool is giving me massive anxiety 😥
Do you know a specific course for oil gas inspection? Thank you very much...
What type of services can be provided with drones in the residential real estate industry?
Thank you Dylan! Really appreciated your video information. I've got large goals to move into sophisticated drone work and working hard and enthusiastically at it. Your info gives me great hope!
Best of luck!
THANKS FOR THE INFO
This is just human nature. On the + side this is also what drives competition, creativity and innovation.
What can I do with the dji fpv drone?
FPV is challenging for me as I don't understand that market but if you reach out to a company called Drone Brothers, they are now contracting FPV pilots for work!
@@DylanGorman thank bro!!
Do you do consulting?
Hey Ernesto, I recently just released my private mentorship program. Let me know if you are interested (it’s an extra step beyond consulting)
Bro... I own a mini 3 pro... What are all the things can i learn to get started with this field?
