    Wanted to add a correction here! If you plan on selling photogrammetry as a service (even with a drone that’s under 249 grams such as the Mini 2) you WILL NEED a Part 107 in order to sell that service. Using a 249 gram drone does NOT get you around that regulation. Safe flying!

      @@goldenstandard187 the FAA has a an online course that is free. Create an account take the course (found under the drone section) and the test is at the end. Most of it is super basic but there is some good reading material in the course. Took me an hour and a half. If you don’t already have it they will mail you a physical 107 card. After that u need recency every 24 calendar months. And like you seen in other videos getting other licensing like thermography wildfire and osha 10 or 30 etc. will help put you on the market for employment, companies want to see that stuff.

    Great content and tutorial Dylan, thank you. Will the combination of Mini 2 + Map Pilot Pro + Maps Made Easy be able to produce a 3d terrain/buildings or something like that? Do you have a sample? I understand that the Mini 2 is not THE tool for this but it is perfect as a hobby and a starting point to see whether I'm gonna like this or not ;)

    • @DylanGorman

      I believe so! But I also haven’t used maps made easy to the fullest extent! It all depends on how you capture the data though, there’s a certain way to run a mapping mission if the goal is to produce a 3d model!

    I go to far flung areas where there's hardly mobile data signals or none at all doing reconnaisance for some land surveying and mapping. My question is will the Map Pilot Pro programmetry program work on valleys, slopes, etc. out of the drone line of sight? Or the procedure really needs cell or mobile data signals to work. I'm not so much familiar with drones but I do a lot of flying and aerial photography.

    I've found it hard to find solid info on this, but it looks like the software featured here is only usable in the Apple ecosystem? What if you don't have any Apple devices? Are there good Android options? Or options for use on a laptop? What if you want to make a 3D model of a building? Is there software that can create a plan that is a vertical plane instead of a horizontal one, capturing photos up the side of a building?

    Actually, you do need a Part 107 for that Mini if you plan to make money with it. Size of the drone is irrelevant if you use it in any way to turn a profit. The only plus to owning a drone less than 249g is that you do not have to register it if you are only using it for recreational purpose. Even uploading video to TH-cam if your page is monetized requires a part 107.

      Hence why I said that this is educational and that this is for those who want to lear about photogrammetry without having to spend serious $$ for it. I could had stated it a little better to you point. Thank you for the comment speaking about this though as it is important to understand that for those that are wanting to get into this.

    Hi, great video.
    Can you still control the mini 2 with the controller incase anything goes wrong mid flight? Thanks

    I like your content, but I'm concerned at some of the info you gave here. You stated that the 249 gram weight limit is so that you don't need a part 107. And that is 100% incorrect. If you are flying for ANY purpose other than recreation then the 107 is required, regardless of its weight. You CANNOT fly a mavic mini for commercial purposes (mapping for clients) without the 107. The weigh limit simply means recreational users don't have to register the drone if it's under 249 grams.

      @jd2161 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. And not registering only saves $5. The minis are made for travel and recreational use with the exemption of the mini 3

      Well in the video I do explain that I don’t recommend using this for commercial work but that this is for educational purposes rather than real world work. Essential I want to have people experiment with photogrammetry without the burden of spending a ton of money. I do see where you are coming from.

    • @DylanGorman
      @DylanGorman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree with you, again just put this video out there educate people and get them playing with photogrammetry hence why I said I don’t recommend using this for paid work.

      I hear you. But you were saying that in regards to the accuracy and resolution of using a mini for this type of work. Not the legality of it. I'm sure it was a bit of a mis-speak to begin with. I just think when you are speaking from a position of authority with experience in the field and you have this big of an audience, you have a responsibility to disseminate accurate information, especially when it comes to the important parts of this stuff. Not trying to be a dick at all, I appreciate you spreading the knowledge. I just know someone in a Facebook group is going to be telling other people they don't need a 107 for commercial mini work. Bad info just snowballs like that these days. Again, not trying to be a dick, please continue spreading your mapping knowledge!

      No you are totally right! A small oversight on my end for saying that in the video. My thought process in what I was saying was aimed more towards the education piece of getting people into learning about it not so much the legality side of it if they were to try and sell it (which of course the part 107 is required no matter if the drone is over or under 249g!). I’ll make sure to correct it in any new video going forward!

    Hey Dylan! Great video! Something like a Mini is what I want to pick up to start to get my feet wet in photogrammetry. Question for you, did this start more as a hobby/side hustle for you? Or did you go all in to turn this into a successful business. Thanks!
