I always enjoy watching your videos and I enjoy your work. I do woodworking, but do not turn wood. I do learn things from wood turners that are helpful things for my woodworking. Right now, you give me something to do inside while it is so hot here in Central Texas. My shop is air conditioned, but not enough to work in for long. Thanks for the entertainment and good ideas. Take care. Have fun.
Good evening, Peggy. Your apple turning looks great. I have been told apple wood likes to crack. That was my experience a well. Keep moving forward. Well done.
The Applewood I have turned was hard as a rock. Being in Texas, Applewood is hard to come by , expensive when I do find it and i have never come across a piece as large as yours.
Nice work Peggy 👏! I've never turned apple before either but I did turn some pear that's really nice. So if you ever get a chance at pear wood take it. TAKE CARE AND GOD BLESS 🙏!
Very nice bowl. Apple is nice to turn, if you can find large pieces. Here in Minnesota, apple tends to crack drying so there is some loss In drying. Our apple has more color in the heartwood.
I’m turner up in the north woods of Maine, and I have a small orchard so I’ve turned plenty of apple wood. The trick is to rough turn it when green! When dry it likes to split wildly and is prone to flying apart. If you would like a few green pieces to try I’d be happy to send some
Nice bowl. I have turned only small pieces of this, but I know it is very subject to cracking and movement. Good job completing it even tho it went out of round for you.
applewood is very solid and really hard to carve. my dremel bits usually go blunt with it much faster then with other wood. respect to you, the final piece is very nice
I really like the way that turned out (no pun intended). The different grains give it character. The orange was a good color choice to fill in the chip. I don’t turn although the process fascinates me. There’s something so soothing, watching you turn a piece and listening to your description of what you are doing. I always watch till the end to see the beauty shot or the finished product.
I have never turned Apple either, that turned outreally pretty,Peggy. Living in Georgia I turn a lot Pecan, and sweet gum. The small resin spot just adds the beauty of this bowl.
Great video Peggy! I’ve been doing wood working and cabinet making for many many years, but bought my first lathe a few months ago. Had a couple of plastic handles on wheels for tool adjustment that where broken …. Turned new handles from Bradford Pear limbs trimmed from my own tree. Followed your advice and ordered the Ack’s wood finish and really like the way the pear wood handles came out 🤠
Hi Peggy, the bowl is very nice. I have turned a bunch of apple and at 15% moisture it will probably move and possibly split on you, I hope not but a good possibility, it is a fun wood to turn and over time the colors it changes to is very pretty. Great job!
Very nice bowl, that wood is a lot lighter than the apple wood I have! One thing I found with apple and other fruit woods can be a bit prone to pieces chipping out and I think it is because of stress on the wood from carrying fruit......well done and thanks! Cheers Al
That's a pretty bowl. The apple wood has some good color and grain, your piece especially. I haven't turned and apple yet but have worked with it on other projects. It's a nice wood to work with and easy on the tools. Glad to hear you're back on schedule, I was getting concerned, ha. Cheers!
I really like the bowl. One of the most fun things you can do turning is to turn a WET piece of apple. The ribbons that go flying are a blast to watch. Really, any wet fruit wood will give great enjoyment. All wet wood calls to be either rough turned or turned very thin and consistent top to bottom. Give it a try. I believe you’ll have some fun with it. One question for you. You did show that the bowl was finished top and bottom. The recess, however, was not. How do you finish off the recess?
The bowl turned out great, even with the chip out of the lip. I was hesitant about investing in the ACK's products but did buy a smaller sample they have. Love the way it works and will be buying more once the sample is gone. Thanks
Thank you for sharing this insightful video Peggy. The closest I’ve come to working with Apple wood is planting and maintaining an apple orchard. Our mailman smokes meats and cheeses and has been the recipient of many of our tree trimmings. Perhaps you know someone who has a smoker that may enjoy the wood shavings from this project. This bowl has some beautiful patterns, enhanced by your resin and artistry. Wishing you and your family a blessed week, gentle weather and restful evenings. Peace friend.
I have yet to turn apple but your bowl is beautiful. Recently acquired some willow, so will try that soon. Also have some peach drying. Looking forward to trying it.
Nice little rustic bowl. Thanks for the Acks Paste discount. Has to be the easiest abrasive to work with - easy on & off. Quick question on Acks application - do you apply the paste then let it sit there for a bit & then wipe off, or wipe on & off immediately? I usually apply then let it for 15-30 mins or so. Then i apply the polishing wax.
Nice, apple turns nicely and usually has mellow features. Thinking that 15% is going to cause some issues?? Maybe rough turn to let them dry better before final.
That was a good-sized piece of apple. Lots of apple trees never get that diameter. Thanks for looking at the camera more. Make you much more personable IMO. Thanks for the video.
That is a lovely bowl! I do find your manner and voice quite soothing. Question; would it have been possible to use this piece the other way round? Before you put on the face plate? That way you could have left a "live edge" on the rim & used the void as the center of the bowl??
I’ve been looking at the Sorby sharpening system. Can you compare to using CBN wheels? By the way. I love turning apple but I’ve never seen a piece this big. Normally I get maybe 6 to 7 inches.
What is the factor for you that determines which bowl gouge to use, particularly when you switch, like from the 1in to the 3/4in bowl gouge? Also, the best belt for me for the ProEdge is their 200 grit diamond belt. It has the least tool bounce of any of the belts that I have tried. Very expensive but the claims are that they last for years. Take care and stay safe
Thanks! The bowl gouge sometimes depends on which one I just sharpened. Other times it is how deep I need to go. Other times it’s just personal preference. Thanks for watching.

Good evening, Peggy.
Your apple turning looks great. I have been told apple wood likes to crack. That was my experience a well. Keep moving forward. Well done.

Nice work, I turned an apple apple from old dry wood, it may have had stress fractures, there were lots of very fine cracks. I was beautiful.

Great video. I have turned some crab apple from my property, not sure if it's the same species, but turned out very nice, with flaws/character.
Cool, thanks!!

Nice job, I’ve only turned Apple once, really nice finish and enjoyable to turn.
Agreed! Thanks for watching ✌️
Really like the Apple wood, never turned it myself. Beautiful bowl Peggy. Just got my latest order of Acks, thanks for the discount code. 👍👍✌️

I think you’re probably right. I’m letting the rest of the apple wood dry more before turning
Glad u speak it makes your vidio. Keep talking

Yes indeed! This one was more of a test…definitely need it to dry below 10%
I don’t think there is a type of wood that you can’t turn. You do awesome work. You make me want to go go to my shop and play around.

Thanks. Yes, I could have used it the other way.
You did the right thing with the resin. If you had tried to cut the bowl down further the rest of the knot might have broken out as well.
Agreed!
I’ve been looking at the Sorby sharpening system. Can you compare to using CBN wheels? By the way. I love turning apple but I’ve never seen a piece this big. Normally I get maybe 6 to 7 inches.
I’ve used both the Sorby system and CBN wheels. Both are good. I think the Sorby system is more user friends with less jigs to use.
I enjoyed watching you turn the apple bowl. Where were you able to purchase your apple blanks?
Sourced locally from an arborist.
One other question. Is it possible to use dies or lacquer after the acks paste?
I’d use the dyes before the Ack’s personally. Let the color dry and then use Ack’s.
I'm having a problem with finishing a bowl.was wondering if you could give me some advice please ?
Check out Martin Saban-Smith's TH-cam Channel. www.youtube.com/@msabansmith
Very Nice bowl! It you source the wook locally? Thanks!
Yes, it’s from Maine.
When you turn apple, does it smell like apple similar to cedar having a strong smell?
No, not really...at least in my experience.
What is the factor for you that determines which bowl gouge to use, particularly when you switch, like from the 1in to the 3/4in bowl gouge? Also, the best belt for me for the ProEdge is their 200 grit diamond belt. It has the least tool bounce of any of the belts that I have tried. Nice piece, Peggy. How long did you let the resin patch cure?
Overnight.
Core out another bowl ?
Yes, if I had a coring system.
