I just had a huge butternut tree come down across my laneway. I have yet to cut it up into bowl blanks, but I might have to try some platters too. That's gorgeous!

I missed the first video on the butternut but will check it shortly. I was lucky enough to have a local guy ( No Berwick / Lebanon ) give me a piece nearly identical to that. I was there picking up some maple as well as other things he thought were junk. Not to a turner ! Anyway that was late fall and said he had a bunch of butternut suddenly coming out of Kennebunk and Kennebunkport late this past summer. Big old trees I guess. Plate looks great can’t wait to try it myself !

Something I’ve done to make sure the chuck jaws fit when I reverse mount the piece is to mark the tool rest with a marker showing the center and the location of both sides of the jaws fully expanded and completely closed. This way, I have a quick way to measure the mortise or tenon to see if it fits the chuck.

When I come to your place for Thanksgiving dinner, that's my plate. Don't worry, I cook. And a beautiful plate it is. Butternut has such a mellow quality about it. This is the first of your videos that I've come across. Could I suggest you give us a little more explanation of your process. Everyone does things a bit differently and if we don't know just what you're doing, we can't copy it. And that, they say (you know they, them, the others) is the sincerest form of flattery. Looking forward to your next video with best wishes from frigid NH.

Gorgeous piece, Peggy! Every time I see someone working butternut and getting beautiful results, it makes me want to cut down the butternut tree in my back yard. Nowhere near the size of the tree that blank came from, but it might have some decent bowls in it. (I'm about 1.5 hours drive north of you, by the way)

That came out great Peggy, with a few small challenges, but that's what makes it fun. If you wanted a more natural colour for the fill material, you could give Coffee Grounds a try, with clear CA, I've done that on a few pieces as it matched more closely to the colour of the timber, and it makes it hard to even pick where it was used. Thanks for sharing.

Love the butternut wood. Turned out to be a great success. How well does the Ack's products wear over time? Lots of the easy and quick finishes do not last especially with washing after use. I make bowls to use and not put on a shelf for decoration. Thank you for your input. looking forward to your next project.

Hi, I just wanted to add to one comment. I love the work you do here but this is more of a Cesery for your shop. You don’t have to necessarily have to buy a big vacuum, but you can use a shop vac that you can pick up at Lowe’s or Home Depot And use it to vacuum when you sand use it to vacuum the dust it’ll help keep a lot of your shop clean and also if you can get a separator that goes over 5 gallon trash can you get those at the woodworking store like Rockler and help keep a lot of the stuff out of the vacuum itself just my one little insight. Appreciate everything you do looks wonderful like a lot of work.

Beautiful plate (platter?). The butternut is a nice change, but I'm a fan of the Maine maple you turn, it's got gorgeous grain. Can the bark be saved in those inclusions by flooding it with CA? Clearly, the epoxy went all the way through to the top of the bowl.

    • @PFWoodturning
